through discipline, teamwork, competition, and ministry. It is a primary goal that all our young men and
women display that character and attitude toward opponents, spectators, officials and the community.
Student-athletes at Corban can expect to be challenged, instructed, encouraged and mentored in the process
of growing and living life in the image of Jesus Christ.
As a member of the Cascade Collegiate Conference, Corban is affiliated with the National Association of
Dave Johnson
Director of Athletics
Dave Johnson, Olympic bronze
medalist at the 1992 Barcelona
Summer Games, begins his
second year as Director of
Athletics at Corban University.
Johnson, a graduate of
Crescent Valley High School in
Corvallis, earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology
from Azusa Pacific University in 1986 before
returning to his alma mater to receive his Master’s
Degree in Special Education in 2003.
For more than a decade, Johnson tutored
under former Olympic head coach Terry Franson
and was ranked among the top international
decathletes of his day. Johnson competed in four
straight Olympic Trials (1984, ’88, ’92, & ’96),
qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team twice (1988 &
‘92), and won four U.S. titles (1986, ‘89, ‘90, and
‘92). In the process of capturing the 1992 Olympic
bronze medal, Johnson became the first American
medalist in the decathlon since Bruce Jenner’s gold
medal effort at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
Leading up to the ’92 Summer Games, Johnson
was involved in an eight-month, world-wide
Reebok campaign known as Dan and Dave featuring
Johnson with fellow Olympic-hopeful Dan O’Brien
in a series of popular TV commercials. Johnson’s
inspiring Olympic experience, Christian faith, and
career accomplishments are highlighted in his 1994
autobiography Aim High, published by Zondervan.
“Corban Athletics stands in a pivotal place in
today’s amplified sports culture,” said Johnson. “Our
students strive to reflect Gods design for athletics.”
In his first year as Director of Athletics at
Assistant Athletic Director /
Game & Event Coordinator
Tim Seiber
503-589-8107
tseiber@corban.edu
Corban, Johnson spearheaded the introduction of
the 12 Hours at Corban cross country road race that
happens annually in May to help accommodate
teams preparing for the annual Hood-to-Coast run
and raise money for Warrior Athletics. Johnson
also helped introduce a monthly Fellowship of
Christian Athletes’ (FCA) leadership breakfast for
local high school and college coaches that meets
on Corban’s campus, while also working side-byside
with Corban’s Assistant Director of Athletics
and head coaches in implementing the start of
a Captain’s Counsel that helps prepare Warrior
team captains to lead their fellow teammates
both on and off the field. Johnson also worked in
conjunction with the Warrior Athletic Association
Executive Council in launching the first-ever Warrior
Hall of Fame Induction ceremony in January of
2010 that recognized 15 former athletes, one
former coach, and the architect and builder of the
C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. Along with his work
overseeing all 13 Warrior athletic programs, Johnson
is in the beginning phases of raising money for
the all-new Warrior SportsPlex that will feature a
full-size, eight-lane track & field stadium as well
as a championship-style FieldTurf soccer field.
Included in the all-new Warrior SportsPlex, Johnson
is planning in Phase #2 to relocate the current
Warrior Softball Field and complete the building
of the all-new Warrior Cross Country course that
encompasses a portion of Corban’s newly-acquired
41 acres that surrounds the northeast side of the
campus. The third and final phase of the Warrior
SportsPlex project will feature the building of an
all-new Field House that will include brand-new
athletic offices, an Olympic-style weight room, an
arena for the Warriors’ basketball and volleyball
teams, and indoor practice areas for Corban’s soccer,
softball, baseball, and golf teams. In September,
Johnson worked hand-in-hand with the Cascade
Collegiate Conference commissioner, Corban’s head
golf coach, Creekside management, and Salem-area
representatives that helped bring the 2012 & 2013
NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships to the
Northwest for the first time ever in mid-May.
“Corban holds an environment for success and
the students work hard for what they have, said
Johnson. “The improved facilities will provide more
opportunity for students to serve the Lord.”
For two years prior to coming to Corban,
Johnson worked as Athletics Director at nearby
South Salem High School. During his tenure,
Johnson helped spearhead a $1.3 million facility
renovation campaign that included a new 70,000
square-foot synthetic FieldTurf surface and
the christening of the new Guido Caldarazzo
Stadium used for all major Saxon football and
soccer events. Johnson was also instrumental in a
project updating scoreboards at South Salem High
School athletic venues. At South, Johnson was
responsible for the administration and leadership
of 17 sports programs, which included oversight
of athletics schedules, staff, eligibility standards
and event management. “The diverse population
of students at South Salem High took pride in the
improvements and was called to take ownership
of its care.” Johnson said. “The environment was
energized after the renovations!”
Johnson currently resides in Salem with his
wife, Sheri, and four children (Alexandra, Makenzie,
Gabriel, and Eliason), while also working as an
Olympic & motivational speaker for clients such as
Reebok, IBM, VISA, and Billy Graham. Johnson and
his family attend Morning Star Community Church
in South Salem.
Head Coach
Head coach Terry Williams prepares for his twelfth season
at the helm of Corban College’s women’s basketball
program.
After a five-year hiatus away from the bench, Terry
returned three seasons ago and is hoping to add to a
coaching resume that includes two straight National Christian College Athletic
Association (NCCAA) national titles in 1995 & 1996.
Williams has accumulated an overall record of 183-173 in eleven seasons
as the leader of the Warriors. During the 2000-01 season, Terry coached
then-Western Baptist to a school-record 11-game winning streak from
January 7th-February 2nd, as well as leading the program to its first-ever
Cascade Collegiate Conference championship and a trip to the NAIA national
tournament.
“Playing for a team of all Christian athletes dedicated to a common
goal of competing at the highest level possible is one of the most dynamic
experiences a person can have,” Terry said. “Our hope is to develop the total
person and Corban is the perfect place to accomplish that.”
A graduate of Western Baptist College in 1974, Terry played both
basketball and baseball for the Warriors. Terry was also a successful AAU
coach in the Salem-Keizer area for many years before accepting his first
collegiate position in 1994.
Terry worked as the Director of Residence Life for nine years (1997-2006)
at Corban before retiring from that position due to health reasons.
Terry and his wife, Debbie, currently reside in Salem. The couple has
three children (Matt, Joel, & Allison), who all attended Corban, and eight
grandchildren (Josiah, Jonah, Julia, Jaden, Katelyn, Parker, Talen, & Delaney).
Terry’s son, Matt, was an assistant coach for the Warriors for three seasons,
while his other son, Joel, competed for the Warriors in both soccer (1995) and
baseball (1996-98) before moving to the Sacramento area where he currently
works as a teacher and coach. Terry’s lone daughter, Allison, played four years
of basketball at then-Western Baptist from 1998-2002 and is now a teacher
and varsity girls’ basketball coach at nearby Sprague High School. Terry’s
daughter-in-law, Erica, played four years of basketball (1996-2001) for the
Warriors before serving as an assistant coach for two seasons (2001-02 &
2007-08).
rosey ball
Assistant Coach
Rosey Ball will begin her third season as an assistant
coach for the Warriors after playing four years (1994-99) for
current head coach Terry Williams.
During her time as a Warrior, Rosey was part of backto-back
NCCAA national champions in 1995 & 1996. On the
all-time career list in Warrior history, Rosey is the all-time leader in free throws
made, free throws attempted, and blocked shots. Rosey also ranks 2nd in
rebounding average, 3rd in total rebounds, 4th in scoring, 5th in field goals
made, 5th in field goals attempted, and 6th in scoring average.
“I had a life-changing experience at Corban as a student-athlete and I’m
excited to be a part of the program again as a coach,” said Ball. “It is amazing
to be part of a team that shares the same faith and the same goal.”
Married to former Warrior men’s basketball player, Steve Ball, the couple
currently resides in Salem with their two sons, Damian & Dominic. The couple
currently attends Salem First Church of the Nazarene.
keith wery
Assistant Coach
Keith Wery will begin his second season full-time as an
assistant coach for the Warriors after working part-time
two seasons ago under head coach Terry Williams.
A graduate of nearby Canby High School, Keith
played three years of tennis for the Cougars. While
attending Corban, Keith helped manage Corban’s intramural program for two
years, including one year as the Associated Student Body (ASB) intramural
coordinator. Keith also assisted in the managing of the Warriors’ flag football
team for two seasons.
“Corban basketball provides a unique opportunity to model Christ
and grow spiritually while playing in the competitive Cascade Collegiate
Conference,” said Wery. “Our goal is to develop well-rounded players who
emulate Christ both on and off the court.”
In addition to his coaching duties, Wery also works in Sports Information
at Corban as a Volunteer Assistant.
Wery, who is currently single and living in Canby, graduated in 2008 from
Corban with degrees in business management and accounting/finance.
derek imig
Assistant Coach
Derek Imig begins his first season as assistant coach under
head coach Terry Williams.
Derek joins the Warriors following four seasons
as assistant coach for girl’s basketball at nearby Salem
Academy. Derek served as head coach for the Crusaders’
2009-10 Season Summary
Eleventh-year head coach Terry Williams went into the 2009-10 season
with hopes of returning to the post-season and improving on the previous
year’s record.
Once again, Corban opened its season with an exhibition contest against
Division I member Washington in Seattle. This time, the Warriors fell to the
Pacific 10 Conference member, 106-34. Despite a tough loss to the Huskies,
sophomore Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) shined for the second year in a
row scoring a team-high 16 points.
Coming off the exhibition contest with Washington, Corban went winless
until the 1 st annual Bruce Henderson Memorial Capital City Classic when the
Warriors took home the trophy with a pair of wins over California Pacific
Conference members Bethany and William Jessup. Freshman Tess Bennett
(Sutherlin, Ore.) was named tournament MVP, while Steigleman and junior
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) were named as part of the all-tournament team.
The month of December would be a good 30-day period for Corban, as
the Warriors went 4-4 with victories over Simpson, Willamette, Evergreen, and
Southern Oregon.
As the calendar turned to the New Year, so did the Warriors’ fortunes.
Corban won its first game in 2010 thanks to an 88-59 defeat over Simpson.
The Warriors would pick up two more wins during the month with conference
victories over Concordia and Southern Oregon.
Corban’s month of February turned out to be the best showing all
season, as the Warriors went 5-2 during that stretch with wins over Concordia,
Warner Pacific, The College of Idaho, Northwest Christian, and Northwest.
Corban’s victory of Northwest would come in the quarterfinals of the Cascade
Collegiate Conference tournament, as the No. 6-seed.
In the semifinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament,
Corban ran into a tough Eastern Oregon team that ended the Warriors’ season,
78-64.
