2009 Softball Media Guide
History
Corban has its roots in Phoenix, Arizona
where, in 1935, it began as a Bible institute.
Relocating to California in 1946, the college
changed its name to Western Baptist Bible
College and operated there until moving to
Oregon in 1969.
In 1955, the College received degreegranting
status from the State of California
Department of Education. In 1959, it
received national accreditation as a Bible
college by the American Association of
Bible Colleges. In 1968, it was regionally
accredited and after moving to Oregon was
accredited by the Northwest Commission
on Colleges and Universities. Over the years,
the College has transitioned from a Bible
college to a comprehensive college offering
programs in biblical studies, the liberal arts,
and professional studies.
Library
In addition to 110,000 titles and 575
current periodical subscriptions on location,
Corban’s membership in the Oregon Private
Academic Library Link (OPALL) provides
access to an additional 450,000 titles and
600,000 volumes. The library and its users
also have access to over 11,000 full-text
journals in electronic format. The library
houses the Prewitt/Allen Archaeological
Museum, a collection of Middle East
artifacts, unique on the West Coast.
In 2005 the name of the college was
changed to Corban in order to enhance
our ability to reach out to all evangelical
churches and at the same time to present
our Baptist heritage in a positive manner.
The name, a biblical word meaning “a gift
dedicated to God,” and motto, “Dedicating
Heart and Mind to God,” reflect the mission
of the college.
2009 Softball Media Guide
2009 Softball Outlook
Corban anticipates being a bona fide contender with talent and experience
In just his first year at the helm, Corban softball
coach Nathan Ohta led his Warriors to a 15-win
season, including 11 in the Cascade Collegiate
Conference. That effort more than doubled the
number of wins in conference play for Corban
compared to the previous year.
Now, with eight veterans returning, including two
NAIA All-Region players and a 1 st Team All-CCC
pitcher, the Warriors are poised for establishing
the program’s best season in its five-year history.
Ranked fourth in the conference in preseason polls,
Ohta thinks his returning core and new recruits can
easily thrust Corban into a formidable position in
the post-season race.
“We can play with anybody in the conference,”
says Ohta. “I don’t think there’s anybody head and
shoulders above us. Right now we come in viewed
by others as being in the middle of the pack. But
this year I think we can really compete with the top
teams in the conference.”
Those expectations grow as a result of the likes
of players such as seniors Erin Sailors (SR, 5-
8, Anchorage, Alaska), Karlee Sisler (SR, 5-7,
Corvallis, Ore.), and Megan Gaylord (SR, 5-3,
Portland, Ore.), plus sophomore sensations
Jennifer Kollaer (SO, 5-8, Albany, Ore.) and Jessie
Jones (SO, 5-4, Gladstone, Ore.). Sailors, Corban’s
all-time strikeout and shutout leader, earned allconference
honors with a 10-win, 148-strikeout
season a year ago. She also notched the first-ever
no-hitter for a Warrior hurler.
Third-year veterans Jessica Pierce (JR, 5-3,
Kennewick, Wash.) and Kacie Emerick (JR, 5-2,
Bellingham, Wash.) have been regulars in the
starting lineup, and will give Corban defensive
depth and experience at the plate. Junior college
transfers Rebecca Franke (JR, 5-4, Pendleton, Ore.)
and Jessica Schell (JR, 5-8, Portland, Ore.) are
expected to be impact players for Corban in their
first year.
Ohta has also brought in freshman pitcher Brittany
Wagner (FR, 5-5, Gladstone, Ore.), who is
expected to get plenty of innings in her rookie
campaign, while newcomers Ashley Strom (FR,
5-8, Salem, Ore.) and Rebecca Anni (FR, 5-7,
Independence, Ore.) will vie for playing time at first
base for the Warriors. Freshman Twyla Baggarley
(FR, 5-7, Hillsboro, Ore.) is set for a utility role to
round out the playing roster, while fellow freshman
Brittany Millermon (FR, 5-1, Silverdale, Wash.) will
red shirt for Corban.
Ohta likes the potential and attitude of this year’s
Corban squad. “I think our pitching is deeper this
year, and we have a lot of kids who can swing the
bats,” says Ohta. “A difference between this year
and last year is this team expects to win when they
step on the field. There’s more of a confidence and
focus that comes from being successful. There’s
definitely a different air about them this year.”
“(Sailors) is one of the top pitchers in the
conference,” says Ohta, “and she has the ability to
dominate games.”
Sisler gives the Warriors run-producing potential,
ranking 5 th in home runs in the conference in 2008
with seven, in addition to collecting 21 RBI. Gaylord,
a four-year starter, brings great defensive versatility
with speed and bat control on the offensive end. As
a freshman, Kollaer, led the conference in batting
average (.466) and on-base percentage (.500),
while Jones was second among all CCC players in
stolen bases (16), and Corban’s leader in hits (42),
runs (28) and fielding percentage (.974).
Ohta and Corban are also excited about the return
of junior shortstop Rachel Steigleman (JR, 5-6,
Eugene, Ore.), who is back after sitting out 2008
due to an injury. Steigleman strengthens the
Warriors in the field and at the plate, and according
to Ohta, has all-conference capability in her
all-around play.
Junior Rachel Steigleman returns from an injury last season
to solidify the Warriors’ middle infield along with
sophomore Jessie Jones.
Nathan Ohta
Head Coach
After coaching then-Western
Baptist’s club softball team
for two seasons, Nathan
Ohta begins his second
season as the head of the
Warrior softball program
this season at Corban College after serving one
season in 2007 as assistant coach.
Last season, Nathan turned around a program
that had combined for 13 wins over the past
two seasons. In just one year at the helm,
Nathan helped lead the Warriors to a 15-22
win-loss record that included an 11-13 record
in conference play. Corban’s conference record
was good enough for a tie for fourth place
overall, which was only two games out of a
berth in the NAIA Region I tournament.
Nathan, a 2002 Corban graduate, takes the
helm, stepping in to replace former head coach
Michelle Hext, who resigned in July after leading
the Warriors in 2006. Nathan joined Hext as her
top assistant in the spring, and the two helped reinvigorate
the softball program. Corban improved
its overall and conference records in 2007, while
beating NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene and
every NAIA conference opponent except one.
Nathan returns to the head of the sport
he helped launch back in 2001 when he
oversaw Corban’s first club softball team. For
two years (2001-2003), Nathan handled all
administrative, recruiting, and coaching duties
during the program’s club phase, helping the
college advance Warrior softball to an official
intercollegiate sport in 2004.
“Corban has always been a special place to me,
and I’m excited to be able to coach a sport I
love at a school I love,” said Nathan.
Nathan resides in Salem and will also continue
as a teacher at Albany Christian School.
Rob Bovey
Assistant Coach
Rob Bovey moves from the
baseball diamond where he
was a player for the Warriors
from 2003-05 to the softball
dugout where he begins his first season as
assistant coach at Corban.
Rob played for the Warriors from 2003-05,
where he made a combined 109 appearances
and registered 81 hits in 328 at-bats. Rob
also recorded a combined 13 doubles to go
along with 39 runs batted in. Rob also made
a combined 23 appearances on the mound for
Corban, as he tossed 58.2 innings and allowed
68 runs (60 earned) for a career Earned Run
Average (ERA) of 9.28.
Prior to his three seasons at Corban, Rob
played one season at Everett Community
College in Washington.
“I count it a tremendous blessing from God to
be an assistant coach at Corban,” said Rob.
“My passion as an assistant coach is to help
cultivate an environment of winning. Simply
having a ‘W’ placed in the win column at the
end of each game, however, is not the goal our
team is striving for. The goal is to win with a
level of respect, integrity, and honor that will
be looked favorably upon by all. This means
not only exhibiting a high level of character on
the field, but off the field as well. As a result,
those who play at Corban are developing much
more then their skills as an athlete; they are
developing their overall quality of life to be the
awesome person God created them to be!”
A 2005 graduate of then-Western Baptist
College with a degree in Intercultural Studies,
Rob is single and currently resides in Salem.
Beyond his coaching duties, Rob also works as
a Corrections Deputy for the Marion County
Sheriff’s Department.
brother (Joshua) … Mom, Wendy, played softball at Cerritos College in California … Enjoys music, reading, writing,
“It is a God-centered college, mature in its teachings, beautiful with its surrounding, welcoming by its staff,
and teachers and I felt God pointing me here.”
2008 Season Summary
Under the guidance of first-year head coach Nathan
Ohta, Corban’s softball season put together a season
that topped its previous two seasons combined.
After opening the season with a one-run victory (2-
1) over then No 14-ranked and fellow conference
member The College of Idaho, the Warriors went into
a slum winning just three of their next 17 games.
Following a disappointing opening portion of the
season, Corban went into conference play and
won eight-out-of-10 games that included a threeand
four-game winning streak. On April 12th,
junior Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) performed
something that had never happened previously in
Warrior softball history when she no-hit the visiting
Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon in a 2-1 victory.
During the Warriors’ winning stretch, Sailors went
perfect thanks to win-loss record of 6-0 that
included a pair of saves.
After a tough road trip to Southern Oregon and
Oregon Tech, the Warriors returned home and split
the final home double header of the season against
NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark before
earning a road sweep over Northwest Christian. The
final twin bill of the season did not go the way of the
Warriors, as conference rival Concordia kept Corban
out of the regional tournament by a mere two games.
Senior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.), Sailors, and
freshman Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) each
earned all-conference honors, while Jones and
junior Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) were
named as part of the first-ever conference Gold
Glove Team.
Jones and fellow freshman Jennifer Kollaer
(Albany, Ore.) were named as part of the NAIA
All-Region I Team, as Kollaer led the Warriors in six
offensive categories – batting average (.466 – single
season record), doubles (8), runs batted in (27),
total bases (60), slugging percentage (.682), and
on-base percentage (.500).
Ohta conclude his first campaign at the helm of
the Warriors with an overall record of 15-21 that
included an 11-15 mark in Cascade Collegiate
Conference play.
Senior Lindsay Batey concluded her career as a Warrior by collecting four game-winning hits within a span of 11 days en route
to earning her second straight all-conference honor.
Supporting Corban Athletics
Warrior student-athletes work hard for their accomplishments both in
the classroom and playing arena. They deserve as much support as possible.
A great way to support them is through membership in a sport booster club
of the Warrior Athletic Association (WAA).
Helping student-athletes accomplish the mission of Corban and the
Department of Athletics is our objective. Corban athletes and teams are
successful and accomplished today because of the unselfish contributions and
efforts of WAA members. WAA clubs support all of Corban’s 200+ studentathletes
in 13 different programs.
The WAA serves as the umbrella organization for individual team
booster clubs. Membership funds and contributions assist in providing
monies for sports promotion, recruiting, Christian ministry projects,
equipment, travel, facility development and the general operational support
of Corban’s collegiate programs.
