President of India presents National Awards
to teachers on the occasion of Teacher's Day

in Exercise ‘Konkan 2015’
The Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Navy (RN) have an unparalleled history
of interactions due to our shared heritage. Recent operational interactions between
the IN and the RN started in 2004 with the institutionalisation of Exercise
KONKAN, named after the Western coastal region of India. Since then,
the two navies have been meeting regularly at sea and the exercise has grown
in complexity, scale and intensity after more than a decade of exercising together.
These exercises, hosted in rotation by both the Navies, also provide
opportunities for professional and cultural interaction between personnel. The
bonds developed through such events further strengthen the established mechanisms
of maritime cooperation between the two navies, while pursuing common
goals of keeping the seas around us safe and secure. Both the Navies
share many common concerns such as protection of Exclusive Economic
Zones (EEZ), threats to maritime trade and commerce from piracy, illegal immigration
and maritime terrorism. Maritime interactions under the aegis of
KONKAN series of exercises have promoted synergy and inter-operability
between the two Navies. The exercise also provides valuable opportunity to
practice a wide range of maritime operations in realistic conditions.
KONKAN aims to promote mutual understanding and provide exposure to
each others’ operating procedures, communication procedures and best practices.
This allows the Navies to develop greater confidence to operate together,
if required, during complex maritime missions. Periodic conduct of this exercise
has helped to build on past experiences and further advance professional
as well as operational engagements between the two navies. Such engagements
between the two navies symbolize the growing friendship of two major powers
in the world, with an aim to maintain peace and stability especially in the Indian
Ocean Region. This year, the IN will be represented in the exercise
by a guided missile frigate, INS Trikand with integral helicopter and a team
of marine commandos. The RN would be represented by HMS Iron Duke, an
auxiliary vessel, a nuclear submarine and other shore based assets. KONKAN
2015, the 10th edition in KONKAN series, will be conducted from 05 - 11
Sep 15, in two phases. The harbour phase at Devonport will involve professional
exchanges, exercise planning conferences, sporting fixtures and sociocultural
events. The elaborate sea phase to be held off the South Coast of UK,
will involve surface, sub-surface and air exercises of varying complexities.
Explosive Ordinance Teams of both navies will also participate in the exercise.
The benefits of our operational interaction are clearly visible as both the
Navies today have an improved and steadfast understanding. KONKAN 15
will further enhance our capability to work together at sea in complex situations
and also contribute towards maritime security in the global commons.
New Delhi, Tomar highlighted the growing
closeness in Indo-Australian relations.
He emphasized the need for strengthening
business relations in the mineral sector for
mutual benefit, the geology being similar
in two countries.
He further explained
the mineral
sector
reforms undertaken
by the Government
of India
in the recent past
to facilitate
growth by introducing
full transparency
in the
grant of mineral
c o n c e s s i o n s
through auctions,
which is complemented
by provisions
for the ease
of doing business.
This is an
opportune time
for Australia to
make investments
in Indian mining sector, he remarked.
He apprised the Western
Australia government about the progress
of upcoming auctions and invited Australian
companies to take part in the auctions.
The reforms also aim at boosting
mineral exploration in the country and development
of the mining affected areas.
Shri Tomar sought collaboration with
Australian companies in the exploration
sector and his proposal was well received
by them. Hon’ble Premier of WA expressed
keen interest in the Indian mining
sector and assured to take necessary steps
for mutual benefit of the two nations. He
highlighted the key importance of WA in
mining sector, which contributes 70% of
total mining sector in Australia and 50%
of total Australian exports. He added that
30% of world iron ore production comes
from WA and the production of bauxite,
nickel, gold and LNG is also very significant.
He further said that WA presents
one of the most attractive investment opportunities
due to its abundant resources
and facilitative mineral regime.
Earlier in the day, the Indian delegation

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that on the
occasion of Teacher's Day we recognise the dedicated

were actively engaged in building and strengthening the
intellectual and ethical foundations of children. The President
congratulated teachers who received national
awards today. He also greeted all teachers of the country
and expressed gratitude for their service and commitment.
The President said he believed that more than ever,
today we need inspired teachers to instill in our children
the civilizational values of sacrifice, tolerance, plurality,
understanding and compassion. He said that he would define
an inspired teacher as a value-oriented, mission-driven,
self-motivated and result-oriented individual. He
said that our teachers need to get themselves a new orientation
and evolve new methodologies to create relevant
and effective approaches to teaching and learning. He
also said that we must work for the long term goal of creating
institutional facilities for innovative training and
professional development of teachers.
Union Minister of Steel and Mines meets
Western Australian Premier in Perth, Australia

mines, the world's second largest bauxite
mine with production of 25 million tones.
Delegation learnt about the state of the
art technology and automation being
used. The delegation
visited
the fully automated
operational
centre of
RIO TINTO,
where from the
company operates
its 15 mines
at Pilbara, 1500
kilometre away
from Perth. Total
production from
these 15 mines is
330 million
tones. Officials
from the company
explained
how automation
is being used to
manage operations
of mines,
rails and ports.
This has helped them improve efficiency
and reduce cost of production. The Minister
also visited the office of Legacy Iron
ore limited, a subsidiary company of
NMDC based in Australia. Minister reviewed
the progress made by company in
acquiring the assets in Australia. On a
busy day, full of other official commitments,
the Minister made it a point that
these visits and meetings were carried out
successfully before leaving for India.
