PHYSICIAN VILLAGE OPEN HOUSE
Dr. Bruce Muma, Chief Medical Officer at Henry Ford West
Bloomfield Hospital, took a few minutes at the Physician
Village Grand Opening to reflect on the three years of
dreaming, planning and building from which the Physician
Village was born.
“There were many meetings, a lot of long nights and there were
times when we thought that this might not happen at all”, says
Dr. Muma, “But we have delivered on our vision today.”
Some of the amenities and services provided at the
Physician Village:
• IT training and support
• Lockers / on-call rooms
• Dictation Stations
• White coat laundry service
• Kitchen with coffee, fruit, muffins, etc
• Newspapers, magazines, with a quiet reading area
• Concierge and staff services
Gerard van Grinsven, President and CEO of Henry Ford
West Bloomfield Hospital, says that the Physician Village
is a natural expression of the hospital’s mission. “We have
consistently delivered on the unexpressed wishes of our
patients”, says van Grinsven, “Now we are making sure that
that level of satisfaction is evident in our physicians. This is
not just about this facility - it’s about emotionally engaging
our physicians and thereby pushing health and healing
beyond the boundaries of imagination.”
Dr. Muma is proud of the impact that the Physician Village
will have on the health care community. “We provide a
higher level of care to our patients when we as physicians
feel supported – and that’s exactly what the Physician Village
does. It supports us in our efforts to care for our community.”
From a proud patient:
“I have never had a more pleasant visit in an Emergency Room. Thank you so
much for producing such a wonderful Emergency Department at West Bloomfield
and having such happy employees to make even an Emergency Room experience
pleasant. Please relay my thanks to the whole Emergency Department – quality
care like that deserves recognition!
From a grateful patient:
“I am unable to recognize merely one member because every nurse, midwife, and
doctor I have come into contact with has treated me with such care, professionalism,
and have truly been outstanding. I can’t imagine going anywhere else with any
health issues. This is a sincere thank you from an extremely satisfied patient.”

ISOLATION MADE EASY
“Physicians often find themselves being
asked to remember protocols for isolation
patients, or find that staff members have
proactively initiated isolation precautions
on a patient”, says Laura Johnson, M.D.,
Associate Director of Infection Control,
Henry Ford Begins New Breast Cancer Screening Clinical Research Study
A clinical research study is underway at Henry Ford West
Bloomfield Hospital to determine if 3D Automated Breast
Ultrasound technology coupled with routine screening
mammograms can more accurately detect breast cancer in
women with dense breast tissue than a mammogram alone.
Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital is the only clinical center
in Michigan to participate in SOMO•INSIGHT, a national,
multi-center clinical research study.
“While mammography remains the gold standard,
visualization of cancers in dense breast tissue with
mammography can be limited in some women,” says Henry
Ford radiologist Biren A. Shah, M.D., who is leading the study.
Unlike mammography, the ABUS imaging technology is less
affected by a woman’s breast density because it uses sound
waves to create 3D pictures of breast tissue. The ultrasound
device is U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared for use
by doctors in combination with mammography for diagnostic
use only.
Women who have more fibrous connective and glandular
tissue than fatty tissue have more breast density. Regardless
of size or shape, dense breasts have a 4-6 times higher
increased risk of breast cancer than women whose breasts
are classified as fatty. Complicating matters, dense breast
tissue often makes it difficult to detect tumors using standard
screening tools such as mammography.
This two-year study is part of the SOMO•INSIGHT study,
a national multi-center clinical research study evaluating
the use of somo•v ABUS as a screening tool for women
with dense breast tissue in combination with digital
mammography. The study is sponsored by U-Systems, Inc.,
developer of the somo•v ABUS.
Henry Ford is looking to recruit patients to participate in
this study. You may be eligible to participate if you meet the
following criteria. All eligibility will receive final assessment by
the study coordinator or study doctor.
• Female, age 25 or older
• Asymptomatic for breast cancer
• Not currently pregnant or breast feeding
• Not planning on becoming pregnant in the following 18 months
• No breast surgeries or interventional procedures in the past year
• No history of a cancer diagnosis and/or treatment in the
past year
• > 50 percent breast density on your next digital
mammogram at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital
• Willing to return to Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital
for follow up evaluations if needed and for a routine
screening mammogram in 12 months
Patients who are at high risk due to family history or proven
genetic mutation are not precluded from participation in
this study. Cancer survivors, women with breast implants
and those who have known benign abnormalities such as
cysts or fibroadenoma, may also participate if they meet the
inclusion criteria.
Eligible participants who are enrolled in this clinical research
study will receive a 3D ABUS exam at no cost to them or
their insurance. Patients who agree to volunteer and meet
the eligibility requirements will need to complete a patient
questionnaire and sign a consent form.
In addition to Dr. Shah, sub-investigators at Henry Ford are:
Riffat Ahmed, M.D.; Sami Fakir, M.D.; Diane Holland, M.D.; Ewa
Lacka, M.D.; and Sabala Mandava, M.D.
HFWBH DOCTOR SELECTED
CARING PHYSICIAN OF THE YEAR
Please join in congratulating the
winner of the 2009 Joseph L. Ponka,
M.D. Caring Physician of the Year
Award - Dr. Doree Ann Espiritu.
The Ponka Award has been awarded
annually since 1990 by a committee
of peers to the Northwest Region
physician who best personifies
the humanistic qualities of Dr. Joseph Ponka – consistently
going above and beyond usual expectations by fostering
communication and team spirit, and expending extraordinary
effort in the service of patients. These qualities are criteria
upon which the Ponka Award is conferred.
Dr. Espiritu, a psychiatrist, did her residency training at Henry
Ford Hospital and then went on to pursue a fellowship in
Geriatric Psychiatry at Wayne State University. Dr. Espiritu
serves as a supervisor for the Geriatric Psychiatry rotation.
She is widely recognized as a caring and compassionate
doctor who is committed to the care of her patients. She has
served as the first Service Chief of Psychiatry at Henry Ford
West Bloomfield Hospital. Dr. Espiritu is an effective leader
who promotes the mission of the Henry Ford Medical Group
of excellent patient care and education. Above all, though,
Dr. Espiritu personifies the humanistic, caring characteristics
of a physician. She has excellent relations with her
colleagues, her staff, and most importantly, her patients. Dr.
Espiritu is a true advocate of the “Henry Ford Experience”,
and she places each patient first on a daily basis as part of
how she deals with people. She truly exemplifies what a
Henry Ford physician should be. For this, all of us - staff and
patients - owe her a debt of gratitude.
From a proud HFWBH Physician:
“While I was rounding I came upon a group of team
members with a very tasty-looking cake, about 50 balloons
and 2 bottles of non-alcoholic champagne. Much to my
surprise, it was not a birthday party for one of the staff - it
was for a young patient on the floor who was sadly spending
her 21st birthday in the hospital. One of the nurses (Kathleen
Hartwell-King) had decided that this milestone birthday
should not go unnoticed or uncelebrated. Kathleen went out
the day before and purchased all the supplies and made the
plan with her colleagues.
We all entered the room with the balloons, the nonalcoholic
champagne and the cake and sang happy birthday in our
best Broadway voices! The young lady’s eyes lit up like she
had won the lottery and she showed us a huge smile to
match. Her mother was with her, and after an initial smile
she began to cry. It was a touching moment - one that I
will never forget as a physician. I know that this was a truly
memorable moment for our patient and her mother. This
really captured the pledge of HFWBH - to take health and
healing beyond the boundaries of imagination.
I know these moments happen every day at HFWBH, but this
one was very special and I was fortunate to be part of it. The
staff involved in the party and the planning were Kathleen
Hartwell-King, Mindy Marks, Tammy Niemiec, Amy Bellamy,
Zoby Orozco, Heather Lividini, Erica Lucaciu, Jessica Roszka,
Amy Robbins and Dr. Ahkras.
We have an amazing team of nurses and staff at HFWBH!”
— Dr. Bruce Muma
From a grateful patient:
“We have had an amazing experience here. Thanks to everyone who took the time
and care to make sure our family had everything we needed. Everyone was very
professional and caring and made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable!”
