Principal’s Message
Dear Alumni and Friends of Elyria Catholic,
Someone once remarked: “We may not be able to control the
wind; but we can always adjust the sails.” This statement certainly
provides a strong applicability to the challenges and
conditions facing all of us in these times of economic uncertainty
and challenge.
Those of you familiar with the current costs of Catholic Education,
both at the elementary and high school levels, know quite
well of the sacrifices required to provide your children the life
long gift of a Catholic secondary education and the impact it
has during their critical formative years of early adulthood. You
are the best examples of the inherent values instilled through the “living breath” of EC’s mission by the
very nature of the people you are today.
Our school theme this year captures it all, “BELIEVE IT, AND YOU WILL SEE IT!” It will take all of us,
past and present, who have been in any way associated with EC, to “adjust our sails” and to hopefully
embrace the responsibility we all share to ensure that Elyria Catholic’s mission and influence continues
to shape the lives of the younger generations at a time when the “winds may not be as favorable as they
once were.” You must believe in this!
Simply put, the future of Elyria Catholic High School’s viability will increasingly be placed in the hands
of her alumni and friends whose gifts and support help offset the ever-increasing costs to make it all
possible.
Thanks to all of you who have faithfully supported the EC tenet, “Loyalty that never Dies, Hail Elyria
Catholic High!” May the Divine presence of the Christ Child touch you with love, enfold you in peace,
and fill you and your loved ones with hope throughout the New Year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Andrew G. Krakowiak, President/Principal
Reunion News / Upcoming Events
The ECHS Class of 1958 (pictured above) held their 50 th Class
Reunion with 52 classmates returning to reminisce at Len
Deluca’s Rose Café, at the “new Lakeview Park;” total 89 in attendance.
A good turnout at the Homecoming game was enjoyed
by all. The reunion consisted of a lot of fun, appetizers, dinner
and conversation about old times and how all were blessed to
have been taught by all Notre Dame nuns. Sister St. Michael, aka
Sister Margaret McGovern, one of the many nuns who gave such
a great education, was in attendance. The Class of ‘58’s own
Sister Lucia, aka Lucy Haas, gave the invocation before dinner.
John Guenin received an Avian Award Certificate signed by Sister
Margaret McGovern. Richard Henke (King of Laughter) received
recognition for all of the laughter and humor provided for 50 years.
The door prize, a month’s supply of “Depends Diapers,” was
won by an anonymous class member.
The reunion team consisted of Brenda Bruck (Mettler), Ann Marie
Hartman (Schiska), Tom Zeck and Paul Pustay. The Class of ’58
designed EC Alumni Mugs as dinner “favors.” They donated 100
mugs to the Alumni Office to use as fundraiser items, through the
bookstore. Why not use these EC Alumni Mugs for your class
reunion? Call the Development Alumni Office for more information.
After 50 years, it was suggested that the class should try to
meet every year, maybe less formally.
The ECHS Class of 1968 celebrated their 40th reunion with an
Informal get together on Friday, August 1, 2008 at the KC
Columbian Club. Dinner with entertainment and a cash bar was
held on Saturday August 2, 2008 at the Knights of Columbus
Hall. A great time was had by all.
The ECHS Class of 1983 (pictured above) celebrated their 25
year reunion on homecoming weekend, September 26-27, 2008.
Members in attendance tailgated at the Homecoming football
game on Friday. Interested classmates golfed in the EC Golf
Classic at Forest Hills on Saturday morning followed by the reunion
party on Saturday evening at Red Tail Country Club.
The ECHS Class of 1998 celebrated their 10 year reunion September
19 - 20, 2008. A casual mixer was held on Friday at Around
the Corner Saloon and Café. The golfers of the group teed off on
Saturday morning at Avondale; a Reunion Party was held on Saturday
evening at Dave and Busters!
The ECHS Class of 2003 celebrated their 5 year reunion in August,
2008 at Quaker Steak and Lube. There was a good turnout
and fun was had by all. Money was raised to make a donation to
the Scott Holland Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Christmas on Campus
Sixty-five first graders from various Elyria City Schools participated in Elyria Catholic’s traditional Christmas
on Campus in December. The morning began with a warm breakfast and hot chocolate followed by a
Christmas play performed by a team of EC students. The children also had the opportunity to decorate their
own Christmas cookies. The highlight of course was a visit from Santa himself and a pile of presents each
child received from their EC buddies. Thanks to a couple of anonymous gifts to the program, we were able to
provide the children a fantastic, fun-filled day with memories that will last a lifetime.
As tradition has it, on August 22nd,
122 freshmen were greeted by faculty
and staff as they entered the building
to begin their first day of classes.
The Elyria Catholic Drama Department
presented “Don’t Drink the Water” this
past fall.
