Back on May 25 th , the Class of 2008 celebrated their commencement
as a new beginning of another chapter in their lives. Their presence
alone accompanied by all of their accomplishments over the past four
years, in both curricular and extra-curricular areas, gave solid testimony
to the legacy they left which will forever be ingrained into the
fabric sewn over the past 59 years of EC history.
Their senior gift spoke volumes of lessons learned from living the five Pillars of Excellence, Compassion, Faith,
Tradition, and Community upon which the EC mission has been built. This year’s class constructed a beautiful
grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Grace in the courtyard created between the school and the former convent. It is
truly a place of beauty and serenity to be enjoyed by all members of the school community past, present, and
hopefully, by students for many years to come.
The upcoming school year projects our enrollment to be around 550 students. As we peer into the future, however,
the “clouds” of a strained economy have certainly cast a shadow on the dreams of many residents in Lorain County
who envision their children receiving a Catholic secondary education experienced by so many of us. Although EC’s
tuition will again remain one of the lowest of the 22 Catholic high schools serving northeast Ohio at $6,300, the
challenge posed for many of our families is becoming greater. Currently, one in three of our students receive some
sort of financial assistance.
As you read through the “Prowlings” in this edition of the Panther Prowl, it is our hope that you can recall some
of the lessons and memories that have influenced and shaped you into becoming the person you are today.
If you are one of the 7,600 alumni who cherish the memories and “culture” of the Elyria Catholic community,
please consider being among those who have faithfully “enrolled in the mission” through their continued support
of the values and the power of the spiritually transforming nature of all that is Elyria Catholic. It is my unwavering
belief that the future of EC lies predominately in the hands and the hearts of those who have experienced her
“charism.”
“If you want to be remembered, do something memorable.”
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Andrew G. Krakowiak, President/Principal
Alumni Highlight
“The Gift You Have Received; Give As a Gift” Matt. 10:8
Elyria Catholic High School has come a long way since opening
its doors in 1948.
The doors have indeed had many people pass through them. Some
have simply come and gone. Others, however, have left impacting
legacies that have sculpted the fulfillment of EC’s destiny, a destiny
that exists for the sole purpose of living the mission upon
which the school was founded. Many graduates and friends have
taken literally the mandate of Matthew’s Gospel seen above.
One alum who has recently been sharing his gifts of time, energy,
sacrifice, and professional expertise who has been instrumental
in taking EC to an elite status in the field of computer science and
technology is 1998 graduate Ryan Gorney.
Over the past five years, Ryan’s guidance in establishing technological
upgrades and overseeing their performance has undoubtedly
impacted Elyria Catholic’s quest for excellence in curricular
as well as extra-curricular programs.
Ryan is currently employed by Accenture and is living in Avon with
his wife Kara whom he met at the University of Dayton. Ryan has
been a true “gift” to Elyria Catholic as one who has consistently
remained true to the elite mandate of all who understand the meaning
of the words “Loyalty that never dies.”
Elyria Sports Hall of Fame Inducts EC Grads
The Elyria Sports Hall of Fame honored its 37th Class at a
reception that was held on May 3, 2008 at the Spitzer Center
at Lorain County Community College. Among the honorees
was long time EC teacher, Mrs. Suzanne Camp.
Suzanne, a 1970 EC graduate, returned to her alma mater to
help organize and build the successful women’s sports programs
for the Panthers in 1974. She was EC’s first women’s
coach in basketball, tennis, track, and volleyball. As a volleyball
coach, Suzanne won over 300 games and directed the
Panthers to the 1993 state tournament. She won a number
of conference coach-of-the-year awards and has been the
Women’s Athletic Director at EC for many years.
Brad House became Elyria Catholic’s first track state champion
by winning the 880 run in 1978 with a school record 1:56.0. House was also a member of three of the Panthers’ four state
championship teams of the 1970’s decade. In track, House ran both the 440 and 880 for the Panthers and earned a scholarship
to the University of Toledo.
Joining their predecessors from 1973 and 1974 as members of the Elyria Sports Hall were the 1977 and 1978 Elyria Catholic
State Champion Cross Country Teams. Under the direction of Steve Currier, EC won the 1977 state championship. Two runners
- Bill Kukucka and Brad House - finished in the top 15 as the Panthers won with a score of 106. The following year, Hall of Fame
coach Dick Elsasser returned to lead the Panthers to an incredible score of 43 which remains the lowest in cross country state
meet history. All five Panther runners finished in the top 15 at the meet. Ron Rick finished 4th, Mike Wirscham 6th, Adam Rick
7th, John Murphy 12th, and Bill Kukucka 14th.

Class of 1981
Noelle Perkowski Bothe recently moved back to Ohio and is very glad to be back and is looking forward to the Class of 1981’s
30 year reunion.
Class of 1984
Brian Wolbers has been hired as Director of Food and Beverage at Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. He is living in Los
Angeles while his wife (Elizabeth) is preparing to join him. The job offer was rather sudden and unexpected, but somehow his
resume reached the GM in Los Angeles and he got the job! They have never lived outside of Ohio before, but the adjustment to
the California lifestyle has been great!
Class of 1985
Rev. Christopher Wade, his wife Renee Dean Wade and their six children: Kelsey, 16; Jeremy, 14; Isaac, 12; Micah, 10;
Simon, 8; and Noah, 7 returned to the US in June after serving their first missionary term in Croatia. They will be stateside for
a one year furlough. They were the first AG Missionaries on the field in Croatia since the war ended. The Wade’s resided in Osijek
on the far East side of the country by the Serbian and Hungarian borders. They succeeded in building relationships with the
National Church and were able to encourage the pastors, give leadership training as well as marriage counseling and taught the
Croatian kids how to play American baseball during the summer and American football in the winter. They helped to build a
multi-purpose Youth Club to help get the teenagers off the streets and provide a safe environment to hang out but also to be fed
the love of Jesus Christ. It was a very difficult three years in a new culture, with a new language, and in a place full of war-torn
depression and resentment towards strangers. However, the family stayed strong by the grace of God. Only fruit can come
from the seeds that have been planted.
Class of 1986
Paul Jagielski was voted “Best Chef of the West” and his restaurant “Henry’s at the Barn” was also nominated for Best Martini,
Best Steak, Best Patio and Best Overall Restaurant by West Shore Magazine.
Nicole (Niki) Boyson Rukstalis, received her Bachelor’s degree from Kent State in accounting and her MBA from Case
Western Reserve. She worked in private industry for eight years, and then Niki received her Ph.D. in Finance from Ohio State
University and taught at Purdue University for 1-½ years. She is now living in Milton, MA and is an Assistant Professor of Finance
at Northeastern University in Boston, teaching Finance. Her husband, Dr. Michael Rukstalis, is involved in research of juvenile
diabetes at Mass General Hospital in Boston. Niki and Mike have a daughter, Alexandra Marie, who just turned one in June and
are expecting their second child in January 2009.
Class of 1994
honeymooned in Italy and reside in Chicago where Kate works as a registered nurse and Mike is a vice-president at JPMorgan
Chase.

Corps-side breeze session to get construction of Iraqi police stations moving and preparation of presentations for the C7
Director. ENS Watson and his wife are expecting their first child in the beginning of August.
Class of 1999
Jason Ginter was recently named the principal timpanist for the San Diego Symphony. He had to beat out scores of other
drummers and impress conductor Jahja Ling. Ling said he looks forward to working with Jason. The timpani is
very important. It’s like the backbone of an orchestra. Jason and his wife Dawn both have the same love for music. She is a
violinist for the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra. Jason graduated in 2003 from the Cincinnati Conservatory with a bachelor’s degree
in percussion and is working on a master’s degree at Carnegie Mellon School of Music.
community for more than 40 years. She was involved in the Elyria
Catholic Endowment Fund and was one of the founders of EC Bingo,
lending her support for over 20 years. Ellen has been a key to
fundraisers at EC, particularly in her work with the James Kolopus
Memorial Scholarship Fund benefiting Elyria Catholic students.
Ellen and her husband, Judge David Basinski, raised five sons, all of
from NASA in 2000 following a very rewarding career spanning 34 years. He served as the NASA Chief Engineer and was responsible for
giving the NASA engineering approval for launch of several of the unmanned spacecrafts at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Under
his technical leadership, NASA achieved a 100% success rate during his tenure as Chief Engineer.
American Club where he serves on the Board of Trustees and has served as the Chairperson at the Ohio Irish Cultural festivals for the past
Senior Class Gift/Graduation
The Class of 2008 Constructs A Peaceful Retreat As Their Parting Gift To EC
The Class of 2008 wanted to leave a lasting gift to Elyria Catholic, something that could be enjoyed and cherished for many
years to come. After much thought, decision, and hard work, the Class of 2008 decided to create a community prayer garden at
EC.
The garden is located between the breezeway connecting the main school building and the Guidance/Administrative Offices
adjacent to Gulf Road. The prayer garden consists of a slate patio, landscaping, lighting, benches and a statue of Mary, the
school’s patroness, in a stone enclosure.
This project would not have been possible without many family members and friends of the Class of 2008 who donated not only
their time, but their talents, to ensure that this prayer garden would in fact become a reality. The 2008 Class officers were: David
Hoover, President; Keri Rider, Vice President; Ashley Novak, Secretary; and Elizabeth Vittori, Treasurer. It is the hope that this
prayer garden will be a special place of reflection for the students, faculty, staff and alumni of Elyria Catholic. Everyone is invited
to stop by and visit the new prayer garden.
Class of 2008 Graduation
promising futures and looking forward to their next phase in life. The graduating class was offered over $4,887,000 in scholarships
and 99% are currently enrolled in college. Valedictorian, Eliana Arredondo will attend Stanford University and Salutatorian,
confidence to succeed. Congratulations Class of 2008!

Pot ‘O Gold Wrap up / Field House News
POT O’GOLD WRAP UP
A “Pot O’ Gold” was certainly at the end of the rainbow as our spring fundraiser
was again a huge success raising $31,000 for the school! The $5,000
jackpot came down to a four-way split between Jerry Boron, Terry Butler,
Lorne Elbert, and Barb Salata. The evening provided a wonderful opportunity to bring parents,
alumni, friends, faculty, and staff all together for the good of raising funds to improve
the school’s campus.
A very special THANK YOU goes out to our corporate sponsors: Allstate Financial Services,
Elbert Excavating, National City Bank, Nick Abraham Auto Mall, and North
Ohio Heart Center. We would also like to thank the Lapos Family/Lapos Construction
for the generous donation of their timeshare at Williamsburg Plantation in Williamsburg,
Virginia, and to Nielsen Jewelers for the beautiful sapphire and diamond necklace. A
thank you also goes out to Mari and Michaela Foisy for providing lovely music during
cocktail hour.
This event could not be possible without the tremendous support of our committee members,
numerous volunteers, business leaders, those who donated items to the silent auction
or raffles, took out ads in the program, made monetary donations, and especially to
those who purchased tickets and attended this event. We thank you for your loyalty and
support. We couldn’t have done it without you. Hope to see you again next year!
MATT WILHELM RETURNS TO EC TO CHECK OUT NEW FIELD HOUSE
The Panther football players were given the rare opportunity to work out and run some drills on July 2nd with former EC
football star, Matt Wilhelm ’99 who currently plays for the San Diego Chargers. Matt (pictured below) stopped at EC to
check out the new addition to the athletic complex and to workout with the upcoming Panther football team. The
concrete work and landscaping around the field house addition are scheduled to take place this summer. The new
addition will also allow us to add another locker room and an equipment room.
