Technical Report #1
Ability–Achievement Discrepancy: WAIS-IV / WIAT-II
May 2010
This report is designed for users of both the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth
Edition – Australian and New Zealand Language Adaptation (WAIS-IV) and the Wechsler
Individual Achievement Test – Second Edition – Australian Standardised Edition (WIAT-II). It
contains information to allow users to assess ability-achievement discrepancies using
WAIS-IV and WIAT-II scores.
There are two methods for comparing intellectual ability and academic achievement: the
predicted-difference method and the simple-difference method and both methods are
presented here. For more information about these methods, please refer to Chapter 7 of
the WIAT-II Australian Examiners Manual or Chapter 6 in the WAIS-IV Technical Manual. It is
recommended that the clinician should determine the IQ or Index score that provides the
best estimate of an individual’s intellectual ability. Clinician’s should note however, that the
predicted-difference tables are only recommended for use with individuals whose ability is
within the broad average range or above, and may not be appropriate for use with
individuals whose cognitive skills are in the borderline range or lower.
The data presented in the following pages is based on U.S. normative data and can be used
with examinees aged 17 years to 54 years who have been tested using the WAIS-IV
Australian and New Zealand Language Adaptation and where WIAT-II scores have been
calculated using the normative data for adults found in the WIAT-II Supplement for College
Students and Adults, which is part of the WIAT-II Kit.
If your needs fall outside these parameters, please feel free to contact Pearson Clinical and
Talent Assessment, www.pearsonpsychcorp.com.au.
