“A New Spirit:
‘Lifelong Formation”
4 September 2015
Dear Iona Community,
This weekend will see the celebration of Fathers’ Day across our community. We sincerely pray for all
dads and the relationship that they have with their sons. We also know that for a number of reasons some
sons and dads are unable to celebrate this day fully, either through distance, death, separation or
relationship difficulty and these situations are firmly also in our thoughts and prayers on this day.
The College has been overwhelmingly surprised at the level of interest in our Lads’ and Dads’ Breakfast.
Over 470 people will attend this function with a further number asking to be on a waiting list. We know that
it is not possible for all Dads to be there for this breakfast, but we are extremely appreciative that so many
have found a way. All Dads and Sons will be remembered in our prayers.
COLLEGE UNIFORM – A WORK IN PROGRESS BUT WORTH THE EFFORT
There has been considerable communication surrounding the inclusion of the College name on the
uniform as a sign of connection and ownership of the values of the College. I have been particularly
pleased to see IONA restored to the uniform and I am now seeing the name appear on various students
with white shirts.
This focus on the uniform has seen some communication with the College from some families, staff,
students and members of the public that see room for improvement in the correct wearing of the correct
uniform.
I would like to be very clear that I value highly our College uniform and the vast majority do the right thing
and wear it with pride and distinction. Even though I am certain that I was asked to tuck my shirt in or pull
up my socks, I also know that I valued the uniform and the culture that it represents.
While the majority wear the uniform well, it is obvious that a section of the student body do not and I am
using this newsletter piece to flag a renewed focus on the issues surrounding the full compliance of our
uniform.
Essentially the compliance of the uniform policy falls under three distinct yet related communities within
the wider community. It is vital that any approach focusses on all three of these communities.
1. The first community is the community of students who make a variety of choices each and every day.
For most students, their decision making ability is made in the right direction, however a real focus will
need to be with students choosing to wear the uniform correctly because of the inherent value in
belonging to a community that has a standard which it seeks to uphold. I have a great belief in the
ability of our boys to achieve these standards.
2. The second community is the parent community who are working so carefully on the raising and
formation of the boys. The school needs and requires parents to be vigilant about how their son leaves
home each day. We are needing and requiring families to make sure that each boy has the correct
school uniform (hats, jumpers, blazers etc.). I have a great belief in the parent body of the College
wishing the best for the boys and College.
3. The third community is the staff community who have both a professional and cultural responsibility to
be vigilant in the correction of students who have not complied with the agreed upon uniform policies
of the College. The job of staff is to re-enforce to parents that it is worth the effort and that we are
working together on the formation of the young men in our care. I have a great belief that the Staff will
realise the link between uniform compliance and the culture of the College that they help form.
One of the issues that I have discovered since coming back has been trying to ensure that we all have the
same information at the same time. It is clear that when there is not clarity of information, the natural
inclination is to take a short-cut with standards. I am including here in this newsletter, the uniform policy
as it currently stands so that we can all begin to work towards a better compliance. I sincerely hope that
the message of this newsletter is that it is a work in progress and is worth the effort.
ART EXHIBITION
Last weekend was a wonderful exhibition of talent and creativity and I was so very happy to see that so
many people attended it. Over 2,500 works of art were shared with the community and everyone is to be
commended on their outstanding contributions. There is certainly a great variety of ways to express
yourself within this community.
Take Care and God Bless.
FAITH AND MISSION
MIGRANT AND REFUGEE AWARENESS:
A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE
Notwithstanding the broad range of political, cultural, economic and
human rights issues related to migration and refugee safety, there are
certain fundamental religious imperatives which we need to
acknowledge regarding this complex issue.
The following is from Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen’s thoughts
during Migrant and Refugee Week, August 2015.
The Holy Father, Pope Francis, in his message for the 101 st World Day
of Migrants and Refugees 2015, has chosen the theme “Church without
frontiers, Mother to all”. It is part of our Christian mandate from Jesus
Christ to care for others and in particular, the most vulnerable. The
Holy Father chose this as an appropriate theme as he urges us to go
beyond ourselves, to live an authentic Christian life, to show
compassion and solidarity to those at the fringes of society. In
particular, Pope Francis has identified migrants and refugees to be in
need of our special attention and care, as they are our brothers and
sisters “who are trying to escape difficult living conditions and dangers
of every kind.”
The Holy Father believes that, “from the beginning, the Church has
been a mother with a heart open to the whole world, without borders.”
LEARNING AND TEACHING
YEAR 12
Congratulations to our Year 12 students who sat the Queensland
Core Skills (QCS) Test on Tuesday and Wednesday. The boys were
nothing short of outstanding in their approach.
Once again, the breakfast of bacon and egg burgers, fresh fruit and
juice proved popular and this year we offered it on both days of the
testing. Let’s hope the protein boost helped their concentration
levels and they are well rewarded at the end of the year.
They have been cooperative and hard working all year and they
thoroughly deserve good OP outcomes.
We need to remind ourselves of the on-going conflict in the Middle East
and the issues closer to home faced by asylum seekers, as well as the
often unseen difficulties faced by migrants in our communities.
It is again time to show the same kind of generosity that was shown to
the Vietnamese refugees forty years ago, and to our Middle Eastern
brethren, as well as those in our Asia-Pacific region seeking asylum
from separate, but no less important conflicts.
2015 also marks the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the
Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office (ACMRO), in its
present form.
“The Church sees this entire world of suffering and violence through the
eyes of Jesus, who was moved with pity at the sight of the crowds
wandering as sheep without a shepherd (Mt 9:36). Hope, courage,
love and creativity in charity must inspire the necessary human and
Christian efforts made to help these brothers and sisters in their
suffering” (Pope Benedict, 2005). Today’s phenomenon of migration
and refugee safety is a providential opportunity for offering more
opportunities to broaden our understanding and vision of the world, as
well as moving forward together in solidarity towards a more
compassionate society and a more just world.
Next term during the QCS/Get Set for Work lessons, all Year 12s will
participate in various talks to prepare them for a range of future
experiences. These include information sessions to prepare them for
career pathways as well as presentations from groups such as
Rosies, the Queensland Police Service, Red Frogs and the Iona Old
Boys Association.
A reminder that exam block commences for Year 12 on Wednesday,
9 September and for Year 11 on Thursday, 10 September. Whilst
students are only required to attend school to complete exams and
assessment items, any student who comes onto the campus is
expected to wear full and correct school uniform, even if their
attendance is brief. The parent of any student who misses an
examination needs to organise a medical certificate and then contact
me to discuss alternative arrangements.
YEAR 8
It would be appreciated if any outstanding subject selection forms
could be returned as a matter of priority. We will be determining
timetabling lines as of next week so students who return forms after
this time could be limited depending on timetable constraints.
AEROSPACE STUDIES
A MAGNIFICENT DAY AT RAAF AMBERLEY
Our Year 12 Aerospace Studies class recently visited the
Royal Australian Air Force base at Amberley, as guests of
Wing Commander Adam Spinks (Iona Old Boy ’93).
The students had the chance to see the C17-A Globemaster
and the FA-18 Superhornet aircraft, as well as trying their
skills on the superb FA-18 flight simulator. In addition, the
students saw very impressive demonstrations by Air Force
Fire Safety and Security personnel and enjoyed an excellent
and informative presentation by Wing Commander Spinks
on the roles of the Royal Australian Air force as well as
career pathways in the Air Force. An impressive display of
the FA-18 Superhornet aircraft, undertaking their various
training missions, kept the skies a much-watched place
throughout the day.
The opportunity to have a first-hand experience such as this
is indeed rare, and we extend our very sincere thanks to
Wing Commander Adam Spinks and the Royal Australian
Air Force for this wonderful opportunity.
HOW DO I LEARN BEST?
Have you ever wondered why you do better in some subjects than
others? It may have something to do with your individual learning
style. Your learning style influences the way you understand
information and solve problems. According to many educational
researchers, there are three primary learning styles:
Visual
Aural
Kinesthetic.
Many people use a combination of learning styles, whereas others
learn best by using just one. Want to know your learning style? Do the
VAK Learning Styles Self-Assessment Questionnaire on the Swinburne
University of Technology website by clicking here. This provides a
questionnaire, a learning style profile, an explanation of the three
learning styles and strategies for each style.
FORGETTING
Forgetting takes place most rapidly shortly after you stop studying a
subject. The greatest loss is within a few hours. The speed with which
you forget gradually slows down as time goes on. This is why it is more
effective to do your revision over a number of weeks, rather than the
night before the exam. Plan your review of material to start the first day
after it is acquired, a second time about a week after that, and finally a
few weeks later.
SPORTS INFORMATION
After the disappointments of the Ashgrove round, the College
rebounded to win sixteen of the twenty-eight basketball games and ten
of the seventeen tennis matches against Padua.
Both the 1 st V and 1 st IV gained wins due to persistence at training and
in tight games. It was a significant improvement that needs to build
again this weekend against St Peters.
