Saxons Take Third Straight;
Down Favored Larries 22-16
That Friday evening, Alfred's
ballplayers sweated it out in the
sweltering rooms of an Ogdensburg
Hotel, but the next afternoon
it was the Saxons who generiated
most of the heat in winning
ft well-played ball game, 22-16.
At two o'clock on a perfect football
afternoon, Joe Renwick took
the St. Lawrence kickoff and nan it
back to the Alfred 26. On the ten
succeeding plays, the Purple and
Gold moved the ball 54 yards down
to the St. Lawrence 21. As usual,
all the yardage was on the ground
and almost all of it was made inside
tackles.
On second down and six yards
to go, Renwick rolled out around
right end and fought his way
down to the St. Lawrence one. On
the next play, he sneaked over for
the touchdown. The two-point conversion
was good on a Renwick
to Baker pass.
As is the Saxon habit, Alfred
couldn't move the ball at all for
the rest of the half while St.
Lawrence piled up thirteen first
downs in a succession of unsuccessful
attempts to tie up the ball
Same. The Saxon defense appeared
to be incapable of stopping the
Larries' power sweeps around end
and outside tackle, yet Mssrs. Herold,
Orsley, Hilt. Wirtz, Quinn,
Place and Kessler managed to hold
St. Lafrence had out-rushed Alline
until midway through the second
period.
