1.I. Frequency Band Designators. The Institute of Electrical and<br />

Electronic Engineers (IEEE) letter designators are often used, as a<br />

matter of convenience, to define certain bands of frequencies. These<br />

letter designators are repeated below for reference purposes.<br />

J. Radio Frequency Emission Designators.<br />

1. Type of Signal. Radio frequency emissions are designated by<br />

the necessary bandwidth and classification symbols that<br />

describe the type of signal transmitted.<br />

2. Bandwidth. Necessary bandwidth is calculated using formulas<br />

recommended by the CCIR for a frequency band just sufficient<br />

to transmit information at the rate and with the quality<br />

required under specified conditions.<br />

3. Classification Symbols. Emission classification symbols are<br />

determined by the basic characteristics of an emission as<br />

follows:<br />

(a) First Symbol - Indicates the type of modulation of<br />

the main carrier.<br />

(b) Second Symbol - Indicates the nature of signals(s)<br />

modulating the main carrier.<br />

(c) Third Symbol - Indicates the type of information to<br />

be transmitted.<br />

(d) Fourth Symbol - Indicates the details of the signal<br />

(Optional, recommend use when applicable).<br />

(e) Fifth Symbol - Indicates the nature of multiplexing<br />

(Optional, recommend use when applicable).<br />
