6.B.9. VHF. VHF will provide short range communications in the<br />

shore-to-ship, ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore direction.<br />

Distress alerts and safety calls (including general calling)<br />

by DSC will be on channel 70 (156.525 MHz). Distress and<br />

safety traffic by radiotelephony, including SAR coordinating<br />

functions and on scene communications will be on channel<br />

16 (156.8 MHz).<br />

10. Maritime Safety Information. Broadcasts of Maritime Safety<br />

Information will be made using NBDP techniques on NAVTEX<br />

(518 kHz), INMARSAT SafetyNET (enhanced group calling), and an<br />

internationally dedicated complement of HF NBDP channels.<br />

<strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> Maritime safety information broadcasts on HF NBDP<br />

(SITOR) will be made on these channels. See also, paragraph<br />

G and N below.<br />

11. Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB's). The<br />

GMDSS includes use of Category I 406 MHz satellite EPIRB's<br />

operating through the COSPAS-SARSAT search and rescue<br />

satellite system (see slso Chapter 2).
