I am conv<strong>in</strong>ced that from <strong>2030</strong> onwards humans will not<br />

only be controll<strong>in</strong>g computers directly from their bra<strong>in</strong><br />

output but we will also be implant<strong>in</strong>g software assistants<br />

<strong>in</strong>to our bodies and beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to communicate with them<br />

via neural <strong>in</strong>terfaces.<br />

Wealth<br />

We, <strong>in</strong> the developed world, are all go<strong>in</strong>g to be substantially<br />

better off <strong>in</strong> <strong>2030</strong> as <strong>in</strong>formation technology cont<strong>in</strong>ues to<br />

suck uncerta<strong>in</strong>ty and ‘friction’ out of bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes,<br />

commercial transactions and daily life. ‘Friction’ <strong>in</strong> this<br />

context is a lack of knowledge about where the best price for<br />

a product or service can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed, a lack of knowledge<br />

about the real-time structural <strong>in</strong>tegrity of a bridge or the<br />

precise whereabouts of a particular item of cargo. Friction<br />

is when a supermarket shopp<strong>in</strong>g cart doesn’t know what it<br />

conta<strong>in</strong>s, nor what the prices of those goods are. Friction<br />

is when you can’t read your emails on a subway tra<strong>in</strong> or<br />

<strong>in</strong> an airl<strong>in</strong>er. Friction is when you glance at a restaurant<br />

<strong>in</strong> a town strange to you and you don’t automatically see<br />

the establishment’s menu, prices and a number of reviews<br />

swimm<strong>in</strong>g before your eyes. Friction is when a bus<strong>in</strong>ess has<br />

no way of captur<strong>in</strong>g and stor<strong>in</strong>g its bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes for<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial valuation. Friction is when we have to stop our<br />

work or leisure activity to do someth<strong>in</strong>g that produces no<br />

product or economic output (like clean<strong>in</strong>g a house – see
