efficiency improvements therefore, a third of aviation<br />

fuel must come from low-carbon, technologically<br />

compatible sources such as bio-diesel and biokerosene<br />

to ensure that the <strong>in</strong>dustry meets its carbon<br />

obligations. 261<br />

British transport mogul (and self-<strong>in</strong>terested airl<strong>in</strong>e boss) Sir<br />

Richard Branson also th<strong>in</strong>ks there is a future for cleaner<br />

biofuels <strong>in</strong> jet aviation. Writ<strong>in</strong>g about Virg<strong>in</strong> Atlantic, the<br />

airl<strong>in</strong>e Sir Richard heads, <strong>The</strong> Independent newspaper<br />

reported <strong>in</strong> April 2007:<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong> Atlantic will also announce today that it is<br />

to become the first carrier <strong>in</strong> the world to use green<br />

aviation fuel. Virg<strong>in</strong> Atlantic is plann<strong>in</strong>g to launch<br />

trials next year with Boe<strong>in</strong>g and the US eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

manufacturer General Electric, fly<strong>in</strong>g a 747 aircraft<br />

us<strong>in</strong>g a mixture of bio-fuel and conventional aviation<br />

fuel. 262<br />

Virg<strong>in</strong> Atlantic is also upgrad<strong>in</strong>g its fleet of aircraft to <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

15 Boe<strong>in</strong>g 787 Dreaml<strong>in</strong>ers, 263 which are claimed to burn 27<br />

per cent less fuel than other comparably sized tw<strong>in</strong>-eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

jets. Boe<strong>in</strong>g claims that the 787 uses less fuel, largely because<br />

it is made with composite plastics and metals and weighs<br />

less than standard alum<strong>in</strong>ium-frame airplanes, another<br />

role <strong>in</strong> which plastics is mak<strong>in</strong>g a positive contribution<br />

towards reduc<strong>in</strong>g carbon emissions. (And as well as play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an important role <strong>in</strong> the construction of new, more fuel<br />

efficient aircraft, plastics also has a role to play <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g fleets more efficient. Retrofitt<strong>in</strong>g plastic ‘w<strong>in</strong>glets’ –
