Italian Derby

Dear reader, 

the whitsuntide week-end saw a number of fine 

competitions. There were the Bavarian Championship 

at Vaterstetten. Löhne and Hill Country III as well as 

the Celadna Ride in the Czech Republic. We tell you 

about these shows in this issue. 

In three weeks there will be the 2005 World Reining 

Trophy offering $ 100 000,-- . The show attracts 

the finest reiners of Europe and the U.S. QUARTER 

HORSE TODAY will be present and report about what 

happens.

Kelly Zweifel win the Italian Derby 

***** The Italian Derby is one of the most 

renowned European Reining events. Scoring 

223 points, Kelly Zweifel (USA) and 

Master Snapper (owner Cuoghi Quarter 

Horses) won the Open Derby Champion 

title 2005 in Manerbio. Dario Carmignani 

(ITA) astride Heidi Sailor (owner Angelucci 

/ Arcese QH), Martin Larcombe (AUS) 

astride Tarisnap (owner Marino Pilotto) 

and Christian Perez (ITA) astride Smart 

Buenonic (owner Mauro Rigamonti) tied 

for second place scoring 219 points each. 

The Intermediate Open was won by Daniel 

Schlömer (GER) and Genuine Dry Peppy 

(owner Franz Grosshauser) with the great 

score of 221 points. Raffaele Colacicco 

(ITA) and Simply One Pep placed second, 

Chris Feichter and Spaceship Commander 

third. Schlömer also won the Limited Open 

astride Genuine Dry Peppy a placed 

second here astride Piccino Hollywood. 

Eric Laporte and Jac Whiz Pine placed 

third.

Reserve Champion: Nicola Brivio 

Matteo Arcese (ITA) and Saturdaynight Custom 

became Non Pro Derby Champion scoring a marvelous 

221.5. Nicola Brivio and Red Moon Snap placed second 

and Claudio Risso astride RS Great Jac Feona third. 

Nicola also won the Non Pro Limited and the Intermediate 

Non Pro Derby with Red Moon Snap. In Limited 

Non Pro, Dennis Michl and Olenas Peppy Jac placed 

second while Richard Hagl (GER) astride Melena Chic 

and Guido Gandelli (ITA) astride GH Redbull Oak tied 

for third place. In the Intermediate Non Pro Mirjam 

Giraudini and Snapper Peppy placed second, Giuditta 

Foti and Instant Starlight third.

Associations unite in one common Bavarian Championship

***** For the first time four German Associations united 

in one common Bavarian Championship: The German 

Quarter Horse Association, Association of Westernriders 

in Bavaria (VWB), the Paint Horse Club 

Germany and the Bavarian Westernriders Association 

(BWA). Besides the 4 AQHA/DQHA Shows there were 

Open shows and an NRHA Lawson Bronze Trophy. 

Vaterstetten also was the first qualifier for the 

Golden Pleasure and the Golden Trail Series. The Golden 

Pleasure was won by Doc Tomahawk and Margot 

Engels-Rouff with Instant Impulse and Felix Schnabel 

placing second and Shesa KC Leaguer and Annemarie 

Brieger placing third. The winner in Golden Trail was 

Lucky Luke under Chaudia Huber. Trimmed in Silk and 

Milena Kalat placed second, Shes Dun Zipped and 

Raphaela Ramler placed third. 

Altogether, the Pleasure and Trail classes were 

quite remarkable – even the Novice Shows. In Junior 

Western Pleasure Open, the shows were won by SMH 

Make Me Hot and Brigitte Müller resp. No Chip Sherlock 

and Björn Kurzrock, in Senior Western Pleasure 

by Instant Impulse and Felix 

Schnabel. 

After his success in Kreuth 

two weeks ago, Austrian Gerold 

Dautzenberg was again successful 

in various disciplines. Astride 

A Passing Melody he won both 

the Western Riding All Ages and 

the Trail All Ages and then the 

Working Cowhorse (Show 3 and 

4) astride Jays Story Show. Show 

1 and 2 in this class went to Bad 

Ole Boy and Peter Meinel. Slidin 

On Diamonds and Philipp-Martin 

Haug placed second in the Cowhorses 

classes and won the 

Junior Reining in all shows. 

In the NRHA Lawson Bronze Trophy Open JK 

Charleys Firstkid and Rudi Kronsteiner and Keens 

Muckel Too and Uli Kofler tied for first place. Glis Dry

Special and Martin Steck placed. The Non Pro Trophy 

went to Bobs Manolla under Christine Berndorfer.

Lawson Trophy Open 

Hill Country Circle III finishes 2005 Hill Country Circuit 

***** The Hill Country III show completed the 2005 Hill 

Country Circuit last week-end. At the deadline for this 

magazine, the Hill Country Circuit Champions were 

not published yet, but we hope to announce them in 

our next issue.2005. The Hill Country Circuit in Nümbrecht 

is one of the most popular shows in Germany. 

Among the AQHA Shows there was also a Working 

Cowhorse, the winner being Oliver Gräb astride Sweety 

Cal Bar with Martina Bollen astride Solanos First 

Dash placing second and Katja Janssen astride ERJ 

Solanos Shadow placing third. In Reining, the winner 

was Emanuel Ernst astride Chicky Whiz Olena. Ernst 

also placed second astride Refried Dreams. 

In general, Western Pleasure, Hunter under Saddle 

and Trail were very strong disciplines in Nümbrecht. 

The Open Western Pleasure was won by Peer Kraak 

astride Lope Like A Leaguer, Heavens Dream Girl and 

Sylvia Jäckle placing second and Claudia Bingel astride 

Marlana Star Glow placing third. The latter won the 

Trail among 11 competitors. Beate Kehrhann and 

Checkmate Hobby placed second, Nadja Krieg and 

Chasemore MR Goodbar placed third. 

Open Allaround Champion was Hints Emely Music 

and Karen van Bekkum. The mare by Undeniably Hint 

was e.g. Halter Champion Aged Mares. In Amateur, the 

Allaround Champion title went to Made In Germany 

and Annette Bauer, who had won e.g. the Amateur 

Trail. Bayotot Peppy Son and Eva Ude became Allaround 

Champion Novice Amateur - they won e.g. the 

Novice Horsemanship. The Allaround Champion Youth 

title went to anothger Undeniably Hint progeny: Hints 

Marie Elaine under Yvonne Nix-Vetten. Both had won 

the Trail and Horsemanship Youth.

Top Show at Löhne (by Simone Jacob) 

***** About 3000 visitors had come to Löhne (near Bielefeld) 

to watch 420 horse-rider-combinations last 

week-end. Nominations had increased by 30 per cent 

this year – altogether, there were more than 1000 

starts. Four associations had united for this show: EWU, 

NRHA, AQHA and APHA offering Open, Amateur, Youth 

ans Novice shows. There were top competitors like Nico 

Hörmann (Schwanewede), who had won the silver 

medal (team) in Manerbio just recently. Also, there 

were Volker Schmitt (Coesfeld), Oliver Stein (Rhede), 

Alexander Ripper (Fahrenbach) and Christoph Dorsemagen, 

German Champion Youth 2004. 

Most sucessful: Daniel Klein 

Several times before had Daniel Klein been very close 

to winning the renowned NRHA Bronze Trophy but had 

failed in the end. Now it was his big performance and 

Löhne: Astride Lil Peppy Dunit Right (oener: Wolf Dieter 

Luft) he showed a remarkable ride resulting in a 

score of 145 points and his first Bronze Trophy. "I could 

really get used to holding a trophy in my hands," Daniel 

laughed afterwards. Lil Peppy Dunit Right was imported 

from the U.S. as a two-year-old and trained first by 

Chris Feichter and later by Australian Martin Larcombe. 

Since November, the stallion by Hollywood Dun It is 

trained by Daniel Klein. "He is great in everything he 

does," Klein says. "He’s got tremendous power in his 

stops and he is very willing to cooperate. I’m really looking 

forward to training him each day." 

The Bronze Trophy was not the only success of Daniel 

Klein. He also tied for first place in AQHA Junior Reining 

with Nico Hörmann and won the Coming 6 Reining 

Open DOKR-FN - both astride Heavens Little Jewel 

(owner Klaus Kiefer).

Silvia Heinen wins Bronze Trophy Non Pro 

16-year-old Silvia Heinen went in into the Non Pro 

Bronze Trophy ‚just for fun’, she says. And then she 

won this trophy astride BR Kings Caramba scoring a 

142. The horse was bred by herself and is trained by 

Oliver Stein.

Alexandra Jagfeld, one of the most renowned European 

Pleasure riders, started in reining in Löhne – and 

won her first show in this discipline astride Chics Got 

A Gun. The Jagfelds had just bought this horse in the 

States. He is now 

trained by Nico Hörmann.

World Reining Trophy 2005: First Infos before the show

***** There are still three weeks until the second edition 

of the World Reining Trophy in Mooslargue, France 

(June 9-12, 2005), but a look at the nominations for 

that event is already impressing. Besides US-competitors 

like Futurity Champion Todd Sommers, there are 

nominations of Sternberg Quarter Horses (GBR), Kay 

Wienrich (GER) or Rudi Kronsteiner (AUT). Kronsteiner 

will bring to great horses to Mooslargue: two-times 

NRHA Derby Champion Seventh Iron and Chex Enterprise. 

The 15-year-old stallion owned by Heisi Wallner, 

was CRIO Champion and second best European horse 

of the 2002 WEG: 

In Non Pro, Jeannette Krähenbühl (SUI) will compete 

with two horses. She won the Non Pro World Reining 

Trophy 2004 astride ARC Golden Boy – the palomino, 

with which she was second in NRHA Non Pro ranking 

last year and won the FEI World Reining Masters in 

Oklahoma City in Limited resp. placed third in Open. 

She will also bring her EC team horse Taristorm. 

The World Reining Trophy starts on Thursday with the 

Go rounds for the Non Pro and Open Lawson Bronze 

Trophy. On Friday, the Intermediate classes follow. The

A Day at Ralf Hesselschwerdt’s new facility

***** On Sunday, Nicola and Ralf Hesselschwerdt 

invited the public to their new 

facility Argental Arena in Tettnang-Laimnau. 

Argental Arena offers large pastures and big 

box stalls with paddocks as well as a 50 x 22 

m indoor arena with reining footing, roundpen 

and horse walker. For the riders and 

visitors, there are a restaurant, camping 

ground and apartments. Nicola and Ralf Hesselschwerdt 

offer training for horses and riders, coaching 

of non pros and clinics and workshops. 

The Hesselschwerdts are well know in the reining 

market. Nicola Hesselschwerdt rides very successfully 

in AQHA and NRHA competition and won two NRHA 

Bronze Trophies. She just came back from a training

Feeding show horses

***** Show horses must be conditioned very carefully 

for their training and showing in order to get maximum 

performance. They’ve got very different needs 

from horses kept on pasture only or those which are 

ridden two or three times a week only. Show horses 

need a special diet with lots of protein, energy, minerals 

and supplements plus the whole pallet of vitamins. 

Classic oat rations will not meet these demands, 

How to feed adequately 

If the horse works something like four to five hours 

daily, it needs twice as much energy as when it’s on 

pasture only. If the horse is ridden like that it needs 

between 90 and 120 Megajoule per day. More than an 

amount of 600 g of digestible raw protein should not 

be given. For that demand of energy, you would have

optimizing its food. If you feed your horse according to 

its performance you’ll notice after a few weeks training

Smart Chic Olena Reaches A New Milestone (by NRHA) 

***** The National Reining Horse Association is pleased 

to announce that NRHA Hall of Famer Smart Chic 

Olena has become an NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire. 

Owned by Jim Babcock, Valley View, Texas, he joins 

Hollywood Dun It and Topsail Whiz as the third sire to 

achieve this distinction. 

In NRHA competition, Smart Chic Olena's 376 moneyearning 

offspring have reached an earnings total of 

$3,033,204.60, with average earnings of $4,513.70. Not 

surprising, his highest money-earning offspring to 

date is Smart Spook. The 2004 NRHA Open Futurity 

Champion, owned by Rosanne Sternberg and ridden by 

Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida, has over $190,000 

in NRHA Lifetime Earnings. Other NRHA standouts 

include Smartest Chic Olena ($112,771.50), Chic Please 

($108,085.01), Chocolate Chic Olena ($78,868.25), Commandalena 

($74,836.95), Rowdy Yankee ($72,319.95), 

Smokin Chic Olena ($62,229.57), Peppy Chic Olena 

($58,584.83), and Paid By Chic ($50,469.70). 

The 1985 son of Smart Little Lena and out of Gay 

Sugar Chic by Gay Bar King, enjoyed a successful 

career as a show horse in NRHA competition. With 

Craig Johnson in the saddle he became the 1993 Open 

4th CZQHA Show 

***** Czech Quarter Horse Association invites all 

riders, breeders and visitors to the fourth CZQHA Show 

("AQHA approved show"), which will take place in the 

riding facility "Nova Amerika", Zalonov u Jaromere, on 

June 11th, 2005 (start: 8,00 o´clock). AQHA judge for 

this year is Carl McCuistion, Wilson, Oklahoma. 

CZQHA Shows have been growing each year on 

quality and number of entries (last year more about 

130 entries). Apart from halter classes the participants 

can choose from: reining, showmanship at halter, 

western horsemanship, western riding, trail, western 

Reserve World Champion while owned by The Smart 

Ones. Before entering the NRHA show pen, he was a 

winner in National Cutting Horse Association competition 

as well, accumulating more than $110,000.00 in 

earnings. 

In AQHA competition, Smart Chic Olena get have 

earned almost 15,000 points, 10 world championships, 

and 18 reserve world championships. AQHA records 

also note that Smart Chic Olena was the 2003 Open 

AQHA Leading NRCHA Sire, 1990 Sr. Cutting World 

Champion, High

Superior for Nite Chip 

***** During the Southwest Cup at Kreuth, Nite Chip 

completed his Superior in Western Pleasure Open. The 

5-year-old chestnut stallion is owned by Jens Erik 

Udsen (DEN) and shown by Alexandra Jagfeld. 

Nite Chip is by Leading Sire Zips Chocolate Chip 

out of Coosas Nite Lite, an own daughter of Coosa Lad, 

who has numerous successful get of in Pleasure, Trail 

and Allaround. Nite Chip has got his ROM and won 

USD 6143,-- so far. The stallion became Tom Powers 

Futurity Champion and Southern Bell Futurity Champion, 

two of the most renowned futurities in the U.S.A.. 

With Carol Metcalf be was eleventh at the 2004 AQHA 

World Show in Junior Pleasure. There the Udsen family 

bought him. Nite Chip has been trained by Alexandra 

Jagfeld since March. In Kreuth, he placed second 

horse of the week 

twice in Junior Pleasure Open and also placed third 

and fourth in Junior Trail. "He is very talented and 

easy to train, " Hubertus Jagfeld says. "and he’s got a 

wonderful disposition!"
