Feeding show horses
(by Monika Wertheim, Ovator PegaPlus)
***** Show horses must be conditioned very carefully
for their training and showing in order to get maximum
performance. They’ve got very different needs
from horses kept on pasture only or those which are
ridden two or three times a week only. Show horses
need a special diet with lots of protein, energy, minerals
and supplements plus the whole pallet of vitamins.
Classic oat rations will not meet these demands,
How to feed adequately
If the horse works something like four to five hours
daily, it needs twice as much energy as when it’s on
pasture only. If the horse is ridden like that it needs
between 90 and 120 Megajoule per day. More than an
amount of 600 g of digestible raw protein should not
be given. For that demand of energy, you would have
Get more performance by feeding correctly
You can actually improve your horse’s performance by
optimizing its food. If you feed your horse according to
its performance you’ll notice after a few weeks training
that its hindquarter muscles become stronger and
more clearly defined. If you add lecithin via supple-
management
as many horses show undesirable reactions to excessive
amounts of oats like getting hot. Also, the amount
of proteins and other ingredients in oats differ considerably
- between 82 g and 127 g per kg. You can only
use best, controlled quality for that. If you use oat, the
additional demands have to be met by an adequate
supplement offering all the necessary vitamins and
minerals.
to feed seven to nine kg oats per day, which is very
much. It is better to feed a basic ration of oats then
add a supplement containing energy plus all the necessary
vitamins etc. Ask your local dealer for that or better
even an expert of horse feeding about which supplement
is best for your individual horse.
ments you’ll improve muscle metabolism which leads
to faster deduction of lactates. High concentrations of
lactates in the muscles are the result of hard work.
Feeding adequately results in shorter recovery times
and better conditioning.
