Dear reader, dear American Quarter Horse friend, 

Last week-end saw this season’s second highlight, the 

International Western Riding Show at Kampmann 

Pferdesport Festival in Bremen. For 18 years now, 

organizer Escon Marketing relies on western riding as 

a great attraction for visitors. And he was right again 

as proved the number of spectators in the AWD Dome. 

In this issue you read, who was there and who won. 

One thing you should not miss this week is the Equitana 

fair, which opened last Saturday in Essen. The fair 

is known to be the world’s greatest hippological fair 

and exhibition. There is always one special day focussing 

on western riding – this time, it’s Thursday, March

Juergen Pieper and Who is My Daddy wins Coming 6 

After tying with 144.5 points, Who is My Daddy and 

Juergen Pieper won the second Coming 6. Pieper, who 

had shown the stallion very carefully at Leipzig, presented 

him in a great way here with fine stops and 

spins. Daniel Klein and Heavens Little Jewel placed 

second, Volker Schmitt and XP Absolut Rooster placing 

third. Altogether there were 16 horses in this class.

That was Bremen - Great Show: 

18th Int. Western Riding Show in Bremen 

***** Almost 200 horse-rider-combinations from 3 countries competited in the 18th International 

Western Riding Show in Bremen. The show attracted a lot of interest both from the visitors and the 

media. Horse magazines from Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands were present as well as the 

local media and even three TV stations: XXP, NDR, Radio Bremen TV. NRHA President Joerg Schoenfeld 

said: "Really great show. Great promotion for reining and great media attraction." 

Camesawconquered wins Trail 

and Sr. Western Pleasure 

Camesawconquered and Nina Hillebrand won both the 

Senior Western Pleasure and the XXL-Trail with both 

judges. In Western Pleasure, Pulsion Precision and 

Carl-Peter Fidler placed third, Lisa Superstar Bar and 

Tizia Kleine placing third with Betsy Tuckey and Magic 

Power Special and Sylvia Van-der-Wal-Starreveld 

(NED) with John Tuckey.

In Trail MS Joes Tiger Sam and Henning Daude placed 

second with judge Betsy Tuckey, Twins Pepper Prince 

and Nina Weber with John Tuckey. Call Me Special 

Sand and Angela Struwe placed third with both judges.

Great show for Austria: 

Tina Kuenstner-Mantl wins CRI 

With 39 starters nominated, this CRI was the largest 

one so far Finally Tina Kuenstner-Mantl (AUT) with 

Lady Lena Twist and Oliver Stein (GER) with Kickin 

Freckles tied for first place scoring 146. Both riders 

decided against riding again to spare their horses. So 

a coin had to be tossed, and luck was in favour of 

Austria. Tina Kuenstner-Mantl (one of the best reiners 

of Austria) was CRI Champion with Oliver Stein placing 

second. Rudi Kronsteiner (AUT) and Seventh Iron 

placed third, Frank Perret (FRA) and Smarty Pep Whiskey 

placed fourth. 

The latest FEI ranking will be published shortly. 

Junior Western Pleasure with two stars 

The Junior Wester Pleasure had been expected with a 

lot of enthusiasm, especially because of the meeting of 

two stallions: Imagimotion and Nite Chip. John Tuckey 




saw Nite Chip and Alexandra Jagfeld as the winner, 

Betsy Tuckey Imagimotion and Hubertus Jagfeld. 

Material Asset and Mirjam Giraudini (ITA) placed third 

with both judges. 

Dream Team: Rudi Kronsteiner and Seventh 

Iron win Bronze Trophy 

The $ 5000,-- (added) Bronze Trophy (AQHA and NRHA 

USA + Germany approved) was won by Seventh Iron 

and Rudi Kronsteiner (148 points). The dun stallion by 

Taris Colonel (owner Nadine Schroeder) was NRHA 

Derby Champion in Open and Non Pro and NRHA European 

Affiliate Champion 2004. Seventh Iron already 

placed third in the CRI with great stops and spins. Grischa 

Ludwig and a very promising Smart Recall placed 

second scoring 147 points. Frank Perret (FRA) and 

Smarty Pep Whiskey (146 points) placed third. Rieky 

Young (NED) and Burnt Starlight and Daniel Klein and 

Heavens Little Jewel placed fourth scoring 145 points.

As Smart As Charley honoured by NRHA of USA 

One last time, As Smart As Charley was presented to 

the public in Bremen. The stallion (owned by Juergen 

Kalischinski, GER) was officially honoured by NRHA as 

NRHA World Reserve Champion 2004. As Smart As 

Charley began his legendary way of success 2004 with 

Bremen, continuing as Bronze Trophy Champion in 

Dortmund. His presentations at the World Reining Trophy 

and the Challenge are unforgotten. The stallion 

was officially retired from the show ring during the 

Americana 2004 and finished 2004 by being second in 

NRHA world ranking. The stallion was honoured by the 

new NRHA president of Germany Joerg Schoenfeld. 


Cutting Cup: Smartlite wins for the second time – 

this time with Ute Holm 

21 starters had nominated for the Cutting Bronze Trophy 

in Bremen. In the end last year’s Champion Smartlite 

won the Cup – this time under German Ute Holm. 

Ute and Smartlite demonstrated great work at the cattle 

earning 73 and 74 points winning NCHA as well as in 

AQHA ranking – with both judges. Cattin Cal Boy and 

American John Nicoles placed second in NCHA and 

AQHA with John Tuckey with San Tari Peppy and Hans 

Kuhn jr. placing third. With Betsy Tuckey, Mighty Docs 

Playboy and Roel Breeur (BEL) placed second, Cattin 

Cal Boy and John Nicoles placing third.

Equitana 2005 in Essen 

***** Last Saturday, the equestrian world fair Equitana 

started at Essen, Germany. On Thursday, there will be 

the western riding day. The Pullman Reining Cup 

starts at 12.30 p.m. offering EUR 10 000.--. Eleven top 

competitors were invited to Essen. From Germany, there 

are Volker Schmitt, Steffen Breug, Oliver Stein, Jürgen 

Pieper, Alexander Ripper and Nico Hörmann – a 

fine collection! Alexander Ripper e.g. is European Reoing 

Champion both in individual and team ranking. 

Volker Schmitt and Steffen Breug were FEI World Reining 

Masters Finalists 2004. 

From Austria there is Denis Schulz, from Belgium 

Ann Poels, from Italy Markus Schöpfer and from the 

Netherlands Rieky Young. She also was World Reining 

Masters Finalist 2004. Besides this, there is Canadian 

Vern Sapergia, who trains at a faility close to Vienna,

Uli Kofler back 

from U.S.A. 

***** Uli Kofler is back to Europe! 32-year-old Uli, who 

is from South Tyrol, came back after a one year’s stay 

at Todd Crawford’s place. Starting today, he works close 

to Dachau near Munich. Kofler was several times 

NRHA Futurity Finalist, Bronze Trophy Champion and 

Ltd. Open Year End Champion NRHA 2000.

New board NRHA 

of Germany 

During the NRHA Convention 2005 in Gersfeld, Fulda, 

the NRHA members elected a new board. The new President 

is Jörg Schönfeld with longterm president Paul 

Kratschmer now being Vice-President. Martin Seelos 

is Treasurer, Rolf Diekwisch Chairman of the sports 

department. The former president Helmut Schmaus- 

Gerstenberg is now responsible of NRHA Marketing. 

Joachim Zangerle is responsible of Youth affairs, Enja 

Libor for the regional groups.

the centre of the long side. Shortly before you reach 

the long side, push the shoulder to the outside to raise

understand what I want them to do.

pushing in the hindquarters and start the lope again. 

Riding is not like fighting. So keep calm and relaxed. 

You need patience and endurance to achieve positive 

results and lots of sensitivity.

Sometimes I only cross the arena and then go back 

to the side I was before. A horse should never connect 

crossing the arena with the flying lead change. The 

horse must learn to wait for my aids. For this, we have 

to be very patient and calm and must continue repeating 

until it functions. 

Tip: 

Ride as much counter canter as you can without changing 

in order to establish obedience and the quality of 

the lope.

Jan Boogaerts now FEI Judge 

during WEG 2006 

***** Jan Boogaerts was officially proclaimed FEI judge 

for the World Equestrian Games 2006. The Belgian 

who lives in Westerlo is an export sales manager for a 

manufacturer of expanded polysturene foam. He has 

been training and riding a maximum of three reiners 

at a time for 15 years now, mostly starting 2 year olds 

and trying to turn them into show horses. Jan is married 

and father of three daughters.

He started riding western horses in 1982. When he 

couldn’t ride for 9 months due to back surgery in 1987, 

he started announcing horse shows and got interested 

in judging. In 1993, Jan got his first judges card for 

BAWR. Four years later, he received the NRHA continental 

judging privileges and in 2000 the AQHA European 

judging privileges . In 2001, Jan Boogaerts got the 

full worldwide NRHA and FEI judging privileges. He 

also won the KBRSF (belgian FN) Belgian 

Reining championship and became Belgian 

Reserve high point open horse and rider in 

2002. In 2003, he got the AQHA worldwide 

restricted reining and AQHA Ranch Horse 

Versatility judging priviliges. 

His major judging assignments include 

Championship shows in Israel, Netherlands, 

France, Italian reining derby, German reining 

futurity (3 times) , German derby (this 

year), French reining futurity (2times), 

DQHA futurity, NordDeutsche futurity, the 

Challenge, JOMM ranch circuit, first ever 

CRIO in Italy, first ever FEI European championships, 

WEG 2002 Spain and many other 

CRI’s, NRHA, AQHA and open shows in 

Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, 

Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Belgium. 


Hollywood Reckless now in 

the Netherlands 

***** Hollywood Reckless was recently sold to Double 

Dutch Reining Horses in the Netherlands. The stallion 

was tremendously successful under Rudi Kronsteiner, 

winning e.g. the 2002 Euro Cheval Reining Cup. Altogether, 

he won more than EUR 25.000,-- . Hollywood

announces CRI 

***** Sweden’s first CRI will be during the Tumbleweed 

Challenge on May 26-29. This is at Greva Gården 

in Skövde, Sweden. It´s a tripple show and international 

riders already announced their coming. There 

might also be a second CRI at a show in Linköping, 

Sweden in September.

Switzerland: SQHA Former 

President Alfons Zindel 

***** What a surprise at the 2005 convention of the 

Swiss Quarter Horse Association: Instead of Alfred 

Zindel, Peter Fankhauser opened the assembly as the 

day’s president telling the visitors that Alfons Zindel 

dismissed due to financial uncertainties in SQHA. The 

agenda of the convention like election, financial report 

and futurity regulation changes had to be postponed 

for an extraordinary meeting which is scheduled for 

sometime at the end of April. In order to find one or 

several new board members, an election committee 

was founded including H.P. Reiss, Heini Meier, Markus 

Müller, Urs Wernli and Liliane Conti. The association’s 

daily business is meanwhile done by Vicepresident 

Karin Huber. 




FF Play my CD dismissed 

from Arena 

***** FF Play My CD was officially dismissed from the 

arena during the stallion presentation of LQH. The 

stallion will, however, be shown in one last show, says 

owner Matthias Borrack, in order to complete his 

Superior title. 

FF Play My Cd is by NCHA Futurity Champion CD 

Olena, whose progeny meanwhile gained almost 800 

AQHA points. His mother Tonnettes Playboy is an own 

daughter of Freckles Playboy. FF Play My CD is known 

to be the best European Cowhorse of all time. The stallion 

was twice ERCHA Champion, Americana Champion 

in Working Cowhorse All Ages, DQHA Int. German 

Champion and DQHA High Point Horse 2003 in Junior 

Working Cowhorse, European Champion Junior Wor- 

horses of the week 

king Cowhorse and Südwest Cup Champion. He also 

qualified for the 2003 World Show in this discipline. 

But he was great in Reining as well. CD was fourth 

in 2004 AQHA Reining ranking and the Weltrangliste 

and the most successful reining horse outside the 

U.S.A. He became AQHA International High Point Horse 

Junior Reining, AQHA International High Point Horse 

Open Reining, DQHA High Point Horse Junior Reining, 

DQHA High Point Horse Open Reining, AQHA 

World Show Qualifier Junior Reining. FF Play My CD 

has got his AQHA Register of Merit (ROM) and gained

just arrived in Italy 

from the States, 

and is presently 

standing at Cascina 

Mirabello, near 

Como, for the current breeding season. The stallion 

was born in Oregon in 1992, at Lesley Day’s Ranch. 

The gorgeous horse was sold when he was just a young 

foal to the Japanese Tetsuro Kawashima, who is still 

the owner of ‘Lucky’. The father of Lucky, Doc O Lena, 

is actually a real celebrity in the breeding industry of 

Quarter Horses, while his mother, Docs Alice, is not 

only an excellent broodmare, but also a clever show 

horse, with lifetime earnings of over $ 20.000, and 

gaining several titles such as AQHA World Champion 

Amateur Cutting, PCCHA Non Pro Challenge Reserve 

Champion, Oregon Futurity Open Co-Champion, Tropicana 

Ncha Non Pro Championship and PCCHA Derby 

All Age Amateur Championship. 

Todaysmyluckyday was trained at Bob Avila’s 

Ranch, and was then shown at the 1995 NRHA Futurity 

by the young assistant of Bobby, Todd Bergen, who 

was only 22 years old at that time. That Futurity was 

definitely a ‘lucky day’, both for the horse and the 

rider, and it really changed the life of Todd and Lucky, 

whose names will be remembered for a long, long 

time. The stallion scored an incredible 228 in the first 

go round, performing perfect circles with loose reins, 

fast and precise spins, deep and powerful stops. He 

then gained a good 222 in the second go, getting to the 

final with the top composite score; and in the end he 

just made the arena burst with enthusiasm with an 

excellent performance, scoring 231! That victory 

remained in the heart of Bergen, who has just achieved 

the title of Million Dollar Rider, at the age of 35, 

and who still remember the ‘Lucky’ stallion as an 

incredible horse! 

During the following years, the beautiful bay stallion 

remained at Bob Avila’s facility, and gained other 

important titles, such as AQHA World Champion 

Jr.Reining Horse on 1996, NRHA Open Derby Finalist 

in 1996, and AQHA World Champion Jr.Working Cow 

Horse in 1997. In fact, due to his agility and speed, the 

horse was trained on the cattle, and turned out to be a 

champion in the working cowhore as well as in the reining 

discipline. In fact, while he was being trained for 

the working cow, he kept being trained and shown in 

Reining events, and successfully won the Nrha Derby 

Final in 1996. 

Todaysmyluckyday was withdrawn from the arenas 

to start his career as a breeding stallion in Oregon. 

After he moved to Texas, where he stood at Cedar Ridge 

Stallion Station for several years, until last breeding 

season. In fact, his owner, decided to move the horse 

to Europe, in order to gain a new market for his beautiful 

stallion. Therefore, with the advice and assistance 

of Sergio Elia, Italian breeder who moved in the States, 

Kawashima contacted the Reining Trainer, Paolo 

Orlandini and his wife, Alice Marinoni, young but 

experienced Non Pro Cutter, who will take care of 

‘Lucky’ for the breeding season 2005.
