Regis Athletics:
A Year In Review
by Brad Serton, Athletic Director
The 2004-2005 school year was certainly a banner
one for Regis athletics. Some teams enjoyed
unprecedented success, while many studentathletes
collected individual achievements. While
we are quite proud of our state championships
and post-season honors, we are even more proud
to continue our tradition of producing studentathletes
who are successful both on and off the
field. As we look back on all we have accomplished
over the past year, let us remember that our success
is not judged by wins and losses but by the effort
we put forth on the playing field.
A number of teams brought home championships
this season. In the fall, the Varsity Cross Country
team won meets on consecutive weekends; The
Mayor’s Cup All-City Cross Country Championships
and the Sacred Heart 5K Invitational. The team
finished in the top 5 in the highly competitive New
York section of the CHSAA (Catholic High School
Athletic Association) and in the top 10 in the ultracompetitive
CHSAA Intersectional Championships,
which includes schools from all five boroughs and
Long Island. The Junior Varsity Soccer team won
the CHSAA New York Archdiocesan championship
in route to the semi-finals of the intersectional
tournament.
This winter the basketball program had tremendous
success on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity levels.
The Junior Varsity finished the regular season as
CHSAA Division “B” champions. Unfortunately,
the Raiders lost the City Championship game to
Blessed Sacrament, a team they had beaten twice
during the regular season. These sophomores
certainly seem ready for a move up to the varsity
after enjoying so much success on the JV level.
The Varsity Basketball team had a season to
remember. Not only did they successfully defend
their 2004 CHSAA City Championship, after
being crowned regular season Division “B”
champions, but they captured the CHSAA State
Championship and the New York State Federation
Championship as well. This was the schools first
Federation Championship since 1993. With a 20-9
record and the most post-season hardware of any
Catholic school in New York City, the basketball
program has established itself as one of the
premier programs in any division in the CHSAA.
Both coaches and players were honored with
post-season awards. They included but were not
limited to; Head Coach Kevin Cullen, New York
Newsday Manhattan Coach of the Year, Daily
News Manhattan Coach of the Year; Rob Quinn
’05, CHSAA All Division; Noel Mangan ’05, New
York Newsday All Manhattan Second Team, New
York Daily News All Manhattan First Team; Andrew
Calcagno ’05, New York Daily Star (Oneonta, NY)
All State Fourth Team, New York Daily News All
Manhattan Honorable Mention; Joe McBride ’06,
New York State Federation Tournament MVP, New
York Daily Star (Oneonta, NY) All State First Team.
During the spring the Junior Varsity Baseball team
finished its regular season at 12-5 and took home
the Bronx/Manhattan Division Championship.
While the Varsity did not enjoy the same level of
on the field success as the JV, it was honored by
the North Shore Baseball Umpire’s Assignors with
its Sportsmanship Award for the third consecutive
season.
Some of the more impressive individual
achievements this season included; Brendan
Hannon ’07, Matt Talbot ’05, and Rory Donnelly
’05 all qualified for the New York State Cross
Country Championships, Kevin Cullinan ’05 was
named to Newsday’s All City Soccer Second Team,
Brian Li-a-Ping ’06 set indoor track records for
the 400m and 600m, Rob Ranieri ’06 set indoor
track records for 55m and 100m high hurdles,
Mike Manfred ’05 qualified for CHSAA state golf
championships for the fourth consecutive year.
At the athletic dinner in May senior Mike Gorynski
was awarded the Sean Mannion award for
outstanding student-athlete. Mike was a three
year varsity letter winner for baseball and soccer.
He also played point guard for this year’s state
champion basketball team, was named All Division
in soccer, and was awarded the MVP of the
baseball team. His individual accomplishments are
more impressive in that Mike’s teams were always
competitive and more often that not contended
for championships. He is one of the best athletes
Regis has seen in recent years and his talents will
be missed.
The athletic program at Regis has never been
stronger. Our student-athletes are talented and
hardworking and our coaching staff is the most
dedicated in the CHSAA. While we will miss the
class of 2005 and their talents that brought about
so much of the success we had this year, a group
of eager underclassmen is ready to take their
place. These talented student-athletes will help
insure success in the Regis Athletic Department for
years to come.
