Tom Kelley writes: Hello Regis! After almost 6 and a half years in the Navy, I have decided to submit my request for release form active duty! Until I find out when I’m finished, I”ll be stationed in Bangor, Washington at Trident Training Facility. I finished my 3 year tour aboard USS NEVADA (SSBN 733B) in late 2003, and for the past year and a half I’ve been teaching other Submarine Officers. First I was teaching nuclear reactor design and operation, and more recently strategic weapons policy and procedure. If all goes well I will be getting out of the Navy in December and traveling to Southeast Asia with my girlfriend for a month. Upon my return stateside I’ll be getting a job doing something... but who knows what. Anyone in Seattle want to give me a job? In the mean time I’m keeping busy living aboard my boat (check out bigbadboatblog.blogspot.com to track the craziness) and enjoying the outdoorsy life up here in the Pacific Nothwest. Come on out and visit! And sadly, I was unable to attend our 10 year reunion as I was climbing Mt. Hood on June 11th and 12th to raise money for breast cancer research (check out tipk99.pledgepage.org for more info). I must say I was really looking forward to seeing all of you again then... I suppose it’ll have to wait until the 15 year! Frank Cowan writes: First, I would like to say that I am happily married now. My wife Kaoru and I had our ceremony on 23 April in Yokohama Japan at her church. It was our third try at having a wedding ceremony (the last two fell through due to my deployments). I am in my third tour out here in Japan aboard the 7th Fleet Flagship USS BLUE RIDGE. I will not be coming back to the states until 2007 at the earliest. Tony Chow has started his third year medical school rotations; he’s learning the nuances of surgery in Philadelphia. Russell Capone graduated from Harvard; he’s spending his summer studying for the bar exam. Luis Barrera will be attending Michigan Law School in the fall. The class of 1998 hoisted high the Alumni Basketball League Championship trophy. The team consisted of Luke Amentas, Kenny Cunningham, Brian Foley, Geoff Clyne, Ari MacKinnon, Dan Ennis, Gerard Carita, Paul Challan, Thomas Lennon, Chris Walsh, and John Cagney. Mike Zanetti has completed a one year tour in Iraq with the Field Artillery and is currently stationed in Germany. He sends along the following news: After I graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, I went off to Fort Sill, Oklahoma for further training as a Field Artillery Officer. My first assignment landed me in Bamberg, Germany in July 2003. While it was my third time living in Europe (I studied for a bit at L’Ecole Polytechnique outside Paris and at St. Anne’s College in Oxford) traveling never gets boring. However, my fun was cut short with a year-long deployment to Iraq with 1/33 Field Artillery, part of the 1st Infantry Division. I was based just north of Tikrit, in a key oil-production city of Bayji. During my year there I commanded over 300 combat patrols, was involved in countless actions with insurgents ranging from small arms firefights to being blown up by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and suicide car bombers. My men and I were credited with saving the lives of numerous American soldiers who were wounded under fire and we directly engaged and eliminated a sizeable number of Anti-Iraqi Forces (AIF). I have been awarded the Bronze Star for my actions and will be receiving the Combat Action Badge (CAB) later this summer when the design is finalized. I returned to Germany in February of this year, will be stationed here until at least July 2006 pending further deployments. If anyone is in Europe in the near future, feel free to contact me. After starring in the short play “Variations on the Death of Trotsky,” Rick traded in his Leon Trotsky wig for the politician’s gavel, and ran for Class Senator of the Fairfield University Student Association. When he is not making life difficult for the administration from the well of the Senate, he can be found studying furiously for the upcoming LSAT examination. 2003 Bennet Chan, bcc2101@columbia.edu John Latella is a sophomore U.S. History major at UChicago. He spent last summer in Washington, D.C. at the Cato Institute working for the Project on Social Security Choice as a Research Intern. This summer, he will work as an intern for the Michigan Land Use Institute in Beulah, Michigan as a writer/reporter and researcher focusing on urban development and environmental policy issues.
