P resident’s R eport Dear Regians, Vulnerable, helpless, dependent, insignificant, marginalized! Uh oh! (you may think) – he’s about to jump into a guilt inflicting reflection on poverty in our world, and the need for social justice and responsibility. Apart from the “guilt” – certainly not a bad topic to reflect upon, but that is not where I was headed. God’s life in us, “Emmanuel” began in that very way. God chose to enter not with power and might, but with great simplicity and vulnerability. God chose not to be independent, but dependent. Trusting, not controlling. A baby in a manger. That is the only way God’s life begins. He took (and continues to take) a risk by being vulnerable in our hands. Christmas is the time when we celebrate this way of God’s Incarnation. Yet, its simplicity often gets lost in the grandeur of the Feast, because this small beginning has indeed grown in its magnificence and power through the years. What has not changed is the way God does begin in each of our lives: in small gestures, hesitating and vulnerable steps. The greatest celebration of Christmas comes in the personalization that we do: sending a card to a person, gifting a loved one, visiting friends and family. We do not let our feelings or love be vague or unarticulated. We honor those who are dear to us now, but whose beginnings in our life were often not grand or memorable. God chose to enter not with power and might, but with great simplicity and vulnerability. So, what is our Christmas reflection to be? Certainly to acknowledge how God is in our life today. But also to reflect on how God has worked – and accept the invitation to do the same. Our beginnings are not over. We can continue to encounter Christ in interactions with others that seem to be fragile, helpless, or insignificant, if we only persevere in that relationship, or reverence the goodness that is there. I often wonder how Father Hearn and the school’s Foundress first met. Was it after Mass one day at St. Ignatius? They could have simply nodded to one another in passing and left it at that. But at some point one must have engaged the other in conversation, and that conversation led to more significant topics and dreams, that ultimately led her on Christmas Eve 1913 to give him the money to purchase the land for the all-scholarship school they had talked about. Insignificant beginnings led to a powerful institution educating many to make a difference for others. Merry Christmas to each of you! Let us this season renew in ourselves God’s life, God’s way, by opening ourselves in the new year ahead to the small and yet powerful ways God will put himself in our lives: vulnerable, helpless, dependent, insignificant, marginalized – but still our Savior.
