This simplifies placement of the rubber dam. In addition, tearing along the margins of the punched holes is markedly reduced. As a result, the dam is automatically adapted to the sulcus. Isolation in the gingival region is thus improved. One or two wedges can be used to separate the teeth, which simplifies passing of the rubber dam through the proximal contact. If the distal wedge is used as a retention element, no rubber dam clamp is required.
