Shackles 

A shackle is used for interconnecting components in lifting, 

tensioning and staying systems. A shackle consists of a body, a 

removable pin and any applicable locking device. 

Types of Shackles 

Screw Pin Shackles mainly used for non-permanent 

applications. 

Bolt with Safety Pin Shackles preferable for long term or 

permanent applications or where the load may slide on the pin 

causing rotation to the pin. Also used on equipment that may 

vibrate to ensure pin does not become dislodged. 

Dee Shackles only used for single leg applications - never multi 

leg as the body and pin may distort. 

Bow Shackles can be used on either single or multi-leg 

applications. 

Grade M Shackles generally comply with AS2741. In 

accordance with AS2741 shackles should be marked with 

WLL, manufacturers identifi cation, grade of material and batch 

number. 

Grade S Shackles generally comply with Australian Standard 

2741 with approximately twice the working load limit of Grade 

M Shackles. In accordance with AS2741 shackles should 

be marked with WLL, manufacturers identification, grade of 

material and batch number. 

Commercial Grade Shackles are not to be used for lifting 

purposes. 

Stainless Steel Shackles are not to be used for lifting 

purposes. 

Care & Use 

• Ensure that all markings are clearly legible. 

• Ensure pin is the correct type. Never replace the pin of 

a shackle with a bolt. 

• The threads of the pin and body are undamaged and the 

pin screws freely into position. 

• The body and pin is not unduly worn and free from 

distortion, nicks, gouges, cracks and excessive wear 

and corrosion. 

• The pin is screwed tightly with the collar and the pin is 

bedded evenly on the surface of the shackle eye. 

• The correct type of pin is used for the application. 

• A bolt type shackle has a split cotter (safety pin) 

attached correctly. 

• Shackles should not be heat treated as this may affect 

their working load limit. 

• Never modify, repair or reshape a shackle by welding, 

heating or bending as this will affect the working load limit.

Eyebolts 

Eyebolts of 12mm or smaller should not be used in general 

lifting, staying or tensioning purposes, because high torsional 

stresses are easily induced in smaller sizes by being screwed 

up too tightly. 

When installing an eyebolt it should be screwed fully down to 

the face of the lifted load. 

Types of Eyebolts 

Forged Collared Eyebolts generally complies with AS2317. 

In accordance with AS2317 eyebolts should be marked with 

manufacturers identifi cation, thread type, nominal size and 

WLL. 

DIN Standard 580/582 Eyebolts these eyebolts can be used 

for lifting but do not conform to AS2317. Normally supplied with 

metric coarse thread. 

Commercial Grade Eyebolts are not to be used for lifting 

purposes and should not be used for supporting loads. 

Stainless Steel Eyebolts are not to be used for lifting purposes. 

Generally supplied in 316 Grade. These fittings are load rated 

and can be used for tensioning.

Care & Use 

• WLL markings are clear and suit the application. 

• Conduct a visual inspection for deformation and cracking. 

• Conduct a visual inspection of the inside eye for wear. 

• Conduct a visual inspection and check for damaged threads. 

• Ensure the thread centre is aligned with centre of eye. 

• Ensure the eyebolt’s thread form and the thread form in the 

corresponding hole or nut is the same. 

• Avoid excessive tightening of eyebolts. 

• Metric and imperial eyebolts that conform to the; 

Australian Standard have a safety factor of 6:1, DIN 

Standard have a safety factor of 5:1 and Grade 100 have 

a safety factor of 4:1. 

• When using eyebolts in pairs, it is essential that care be 

taken to properly align them. Eyebolts must not be forced 

into alignment as overstress will cause a reduction in the 

WLL. 

• A continuous sling should not be used with pairs of 

eyebolts. When lifting with pairs of eyebolts supported by 

slings, always use slings with individual lengths. 

Eyebolts should be inspected periodically by a competent 

person as per AS2317.

Rigging Screws & Turnbuckles 

Types of Turnbuckles and Rigging Screws 

Grade L Rigging Screws & Turnbuckles must comply with AS2319. In accordance with AS2319 turnbuckles and rigging screws 

should be marked with manufacturers identifi cation, nominal size, where the quality of the grade is other than L, the quality of 

grade shall be marked on the end fi tting., WLL in tonnes, identifi cation marking to correlate the rigging screw or turnbuckle to the 

test certifi cate. 

Commercial Grade Turnbuckles are not to be used for lifting purposes. Commercial Grade Turnbuckles are not made to any 

standard. Usually used for tensioning or supporting light loads. 

Care & Use 

• Ensure the WLL suits the application. 

• Markings can be clearly read. 

• The body and fitting of the rigging screw or turnbuckle is not distorted. 

• Conduct a visual inspection for nicks, gouges, cracks and corrosion. 

• Conduct a visual inspection for damaged screw threads. 

• Care should be taken to ensure that rigging screws and turnbuckles are not excessively tightened. 

Turnbuckles and rigging screws should be inspected periodically by a competent person as per AS2319 

Rigging Screws 

Rigging Screws are used to provide a means for length adjustment and for tensioning. They are also used with guys for masts, 

towers and other structures and engineering applications. 

Rigging Screws generally have elongated eyes or clevis end fittings for connection to shackles, wire rope assemblies, pad eyes 

and the like. 

An observation hole is provided at the inner end of the thread, at each end of the body, which permits visual observation of the 

maximum permitted extended position of the end fi tting. 

Additionally, rigging screws have the innate facility for continuing lubrication as the enclosed section of the body provides a 

suitable reservoir for grease or other lubrication. Hence, they have an advantage in relative corrosive applications such as ship’s 

rigging and permanent outdoor guys. 

Rigging screws are not designed for continuous adjustment under rated load conditions. 

Turnbuckles 

Turnbuckles have the same applications as rigging screws, but generally have smaller size range and shorter adjustment. 

The main benefi t of a turnbuckle is that it may have a greater ability to be tightened under load. Also, there may be a wider scope 

for providing means for locking while in service. 

Turnbuckles are not designed for continuous adjustment under rated load.

Wire Rope Terminations 

Wedge Sockets 

Wedge - type sockets are used in lifting, pulling, tensioning and staying systems as a simple mechanical connection to steel wire 

ropes, especially where steel wire ropes may require shortening. One end of the wedge type socket is able to clamp a rope with a 

wedging action and the other end is able to connect to another fitting or anchorage. 

The wedge - type socket is designed for use on wire ropes up to and including 1770 grade wire with a wire rope core, however 

higher grade wire rope may be used, provided it meets the intent of this Standard. 

Metal or Spelter Sockets - Open and Closed 

The load is transferred between the rope and the socket forging or casting by means of adhesion between the rope wires and 

the metal or resin used in the socket bowl and subsequent wedging action provided by the bond between the rope’s wires and 

the metal or resin in the socket. Care should be taken to follow the correct socketing procedure. Properly applied poured socket 

attachments will withstand the actual breaking force of the wire rope.

Crosby S-421T Terminator Wedge Sockets: 


PWB Forged Open Swage Socket, with Round Pin: 


• Wedge socket terminations have an effi ciency rating of 

80% based on the catalogue strength of XXIP wire rope. 

• Crosby products meet or exceed all requirements of 

ASME B30.26 including identification, ductility, design 

factor, proof load and temperature requirements. 

Importantly, Crosby products meet other critical 

performance requirements including fatigue life, impact 

properties and material traceability, not addressed by 

ASME B30.26. 

• Type Approval and certifi cation in accordance with 

ABS 2006 Steel Vessel Rules 1-1-17.7, and ABS Guide 

for Certification of Cranes.

Thimbles 

Thimbles are used at the ends of wire rope to reinforce the 

eye and obviate damage and wear to the wire rope from any 

connected lifting tackle or other connection. 

Types of Thimbles 

Wire Rope Thimbles are made from mild steel and are hot 

dipped galvanised with blue paint on the tips in accordance 

with AS1138. 

Commercial Grade Thimbles are not manufactured to any 

standard and are made from light gauge material. Normally 

used in light applications and supplied in electro galvanised 

finish. 

Stainless Steel Thimbles are not manufactured to any 

standard and are usually used with stainless steel wire 

rope when corrosion could be a cause for concern. 

Solid Thimbles are used for loads that are secured by a bolt or 

pin and can be drilled (bored) out to match that pin or bolt, refer 

to AS1138.

NCG Cable Stockings 

Cable stockings are available in a variety of designs to suit 

different applications including cable hauling, load restraint, 

cable splicing (joining), re-roping cranes and airline or hydraulic 

hose restraint. 

Our cable stockings are serial numbered, stamped with 

identifi cation and any protruding wire ends are covered with 

plastic adhesive to reduce manual handling risks. 

Fitting Precautions 

1. Always ensure the entire plaited length of the stocking is in 

contact with the cable to be hauled. 

2. Ease out any ‘bubbles’ or slack in the stocking to ensure 

maximum contact of grip to cable. 

3. Always fasten the mouth end of the stocking to the cable by 

means of tie wire or similar. This will guard against accidental 

release, especially in the case of a reverse haul. 

4. Always tape over the fastening at the mouth end to ensure a 

smooth transition from stocking to cable.

• Recessed sideplate design reduces the gap between the 

sheave rim and the sideplate, allowing the sheave assembly 

to be captured in the block if loss of center pin occurs. 

• Sealed tapered roller bearings extend the life of the center 

pin and bearings, and allows for faster line speeds than 

recommended with standard snatch blocks. 

• Shackle fitting swivels for easy positioning. 

• Suitable for hoisting personnel, contingent upon all 

employees, including the winch operator, being trained to 

follow any applicable Federal, local and industry standards. 

• Tugger/Derrick applications: API RP54 

• Tower applications: OSHA directive CPL 2-1.36 

• Holes through side plates are available for secondary block 

securement device. 

• Manufactured by an API Q1 Certified facility 

• Type Approval and certification in accordance with 

ABS 2006 Steel Vessel Rules 1-1-17.7, and ABS Guide
