Care & Use 

General 

1. Keep a register of all slings in use. 

2. Ensure that the chain sling is precisely as ordered and all 

components and chain is clearly marked. 

3. Ensure that the manufacture and test certifi cate are in order. 

4. Ensure that the identification and Working Load Limit on the 

sling identification tag corresponds with the test information 

on the certificate. 

Care 

1. Lightly oil chain and fi ttings before prolonged storage. 

2. Never heat treat alloy chain or fittings. 

3. Store in a clean and dry place. 

Use 

1. Always visually inspect chain and fittings and ensure that 

they are free from damage or wear before use. 

2. Ensure that chain is free from twists and is protected from 

any sharp corners on loads. 

3. Chain, components and links should articulate freely to the 

adjacent links. 

4. Latches on hooks, where present should operate freely and 

seat properly without evidence of permanent distortion. 

Inspection 

1. Every chain link should be individually checked for 

evidence of wear, twisting, cracks, breaks, gauges, 

stretch, bend, weld splatter, discolouration from excessive 

temperature and the opening of hooks, any worn link should 

be measured to determine the degree of wear, which should 

not exceed that allowed for by the manufacturer. 

2. Oblong links and hooks should be inspected for any signs 

of wear and for any signs of distortion, such as widening of 

the hook throat opening. 

3. Coupler should be inspected for any signs of wear at their 

load bearing points, for excessive play of the load pin within 

the body halves and for impaired rotation of the body halves 

around the load pin. (Note – when reassembling a Coupler it 

is recommended that a new pin and stud assembly be used). 

4. Chain links or fittings found to have defects should be 

clearly marked to indicate rejection and withdrawn from 

service until properly repaired and proof tested. The results 

of each inspection and repair should be entered on the chain 

inspection record. 

Working Load Limit 

Do not use a chain in a manner that will exceed the WLL of the 

chain for the particular conditions of use. 

Hydrogen Embrittlement 

Hydrogen embrittlement is a dangerous condition that should be 

prevented. 

In certain environments, such as where acid pickling or 

cathodic cleaning is carried out, hydrogen embrittlement can 

occur in steels that are quenched and tempered, because of the 

absorption of atomic hydrogen generated at steel surfaces. 

Effects of Hot Environments 

The strength of all grades of chain is adversely affected by 

excessively elevated temperatures. Where the temperatures 

are likely to exceed 200°C, contact the manufacturer for the 

required reduction in working load limit. 

Low Temperature 

The user should seek advice from the manufacturer where 

chain is to be used at temperature colder than -10°C. 

Heat Treatment 

Chain in its fi nished condition should never be heat-treated. 

Corrosive Environment 

Grade T chain should never be used in acid or other corrosive 

environments. Other grades may be suitable for some corrosive 

environments, but the manufacturer or supplier should be 

contacted to determine the best grade of chain for the particular 

application. 

Galvanising 

Chains should never be hot-dip galvanised or electroplated, 

except by the manufacturer. Hot-dip galvanising can reduce the 

breaking load and WLL by 20 percent on some grades of chain. 

Extending the Useful Life 

The useful life of chains is considerable and may be easily 

maximised by observing the following precautions: 

(a) Care: 

• Never heat or heat-treat chain. 

• Lightly oil chain prior to prolonged storage. 

• Store chain in clean dry places. 

(b) Use: 

• Ensure that chain is free of any significant damage or wear. 

• Ensure that chain is evenly loaded in use. 

• Ensure that chain is free of twists and knots and is protected 

from any sharp corners when used. 

• Avoid crushing chain. 

Gunnebo Lifting – GrabiQ 

The all-inclusive chain sling system for coupling, shortening and 

lifting in Grade V(100). 

Our GrabiQ sling system is designed to improve and make your 

lifting as quick and easy as possible. 

GrabiQ means for example; 

• 25 % additional strength in the new Grade V(100) material. 

• All top assemblies consist of no more than three 

components. 

• Shortening function of chain legs is integral with no extra 

components. 

One of the main advantages of the GrabiQ system is that the 

work involved in connecting, adjusting and checking the lift 

takes less time and can be carried out more easily. 

The integral shortening function, for example, means that a 

four-part sling which previously required up to thirteen different 

top components now needs only three in the GrabiQ system. 

The German Berufsgenossenschaften (BG) launched in 

the beginning of 2004 a new specifi cation for Grade V(100) 

components, Gunnebo has passed this new specifi cation and 

was one of the fi rst companies in the world to do so. 

Design With A Purpose 

The Midgrab allows instant mounting, positioning and 

shortening on any part of the chain. 

Built in shortening function in the connector. 

The option of shortening is always there. 


With C-lok as terminal fi tting the sling can be altered between 

choke hitch, basket hitch and leg extension with flattened links. 

With the fl exibility of the GrabiQ system a number of different 

lifting situations can be solved using the same GrabiQ sling.

With GrabiQ design the outgoing chains from the shortening 

pocket are allowed on either side for loading, thereby 

eliminating misuse. 


Every chain leg can instantly be altered from straight lift to a 

loop sling by using the shortening pocket. 

Oversized or squared shaped master links are ideal for use with 

large crane hooks (e.g. DIN15401). 

The C-parts are designed to allow for correct size of wire rope 

thimble to be fitted into the eye. This opens the way for new 

ideal combinations of chain and wire rope slings. 

The GrabiQ system has been designed with special care so that 

it should be easy to use correctly. 

All clevis type connections are snugly matched to the correct 

size of chain and pin dimension, thereby eliminating any 

incorrect assembly. 

The round sling hooks are colour coded in order to match the 

corresponding size of the round sling. 

Red=5t / Yellow=3t / Green=2t / Violet=1t. 

By using two extra chain links, CL and CLD will have the same 

effective length as CG and CGD. 

Economical 

The cost calculation of lifting equipment is not only limited to 

the cost of the original purchase, the total cost during the entire 

lifecycle should also be taken into consideration. 

With the radically engineered GrabiQ system the number 

of unique components has been reduced, which means: 

• Less components required. 

• Less components to assemble, requires less time. 

• Less wear points means less wear points to inspect. 

• Lower inventory required. 

• Multifunctional slings reduces the number of slings 

required to a minimum. 

• Increased lifting capacity. 

• Lower lifecycle cost.

top end into a common shackle or crane hook.

1. Some shortening devices, such as grab hooks, derate the WLL for the sling by 25%. Other shortening devices such as 

shortening hooks and grab hooks with cradle configuration, may not derate the WLL for the sling. Advice regarding the 

appropriate deration should be sought by the manufacturer. 

2. The determination of the angle of the multi-leg sling is the largest included angle at the apex of the confi guration. 

3. Reeved slings and basket slings, in a two leg configuration have a maximum angle for use of 60°. 

4. To ensure that an appropriately rated master link is used for the 2 leg basket sling, the master link to be used shall be a 

master link of an appropriate WLL and with intermediate links. This ensures that the factor of 2.25 can be accommodated 

and that there is no overcrowding with back hooking.

1. Some shortening devices, such as grab hooks, derate the WLL for the sling by 25%. Other shortening devices such as 

shortening hooks and grab hooks with cradle confi guration, may not derate the WLL for the sling. Advice regarding the 

appropriate deration should be sought by the manufacturer. 

2. The determination of the angle of the multi-leg sling is the largest included angle at the apex of the confi guration. 

3. Reeved slings and basket slings, in a two leg confi guration have a maximum angle for use of 60°.

The evolution in chain steel and in the production process enables the 

quantum leap to a new “class of its own”. Serial and batch number are stamped 

every running metre and every link is stamped with ICE. Up to 60% higher 

WLL than Grade 8. Extremely temperature resistant -60°C up to +300°C. 

The reduction in weight of more than 30 % is a considerable factor in work 

ergonomics. 

ICE Overheating Indication 

Special ICE-pink powder coating permanently changes colour at increased 

temperatures. Black signifi es an application of more than 300°C and further use 

is then prohibited.

most innovative chain sling system available. Full range of components available

• Every chain link is stamped with VIP 

• Serial and batch numbers are stamped every running metre 

• A highly visible colour which discolours under high temperatures and 

a dual process surface coating for increased corrosion resistance

VIP chains are more resistant to external mechanical wear friction and
