National Zoo Conservation & Research Centre
A few years ago the Conservation & Research Centre at the National Zoo in Washington made a
commitment to establish a research program which focuses on rare and endangered equids. While the
programm is already looking at Przewalski’s horses, Persian onagers and now Grevy’s zebra, the Centre is
planning a focus on Hartmann’s mountain zebra. Research will include non-invasive hormone monitoring,
assessment of uterine health (ultrasound and biopsies), longitudinal monitoring of ovarian activity
(ultrasonography), semen collection by electroejaculation and sperm cryopreservation, control of ovulation
and artificial insemination. A major limitation has so far been a lack of animals. While the National Zoo is in
the process of setting up their own Hartmann breeding group, there is potential for collaborative projects not
only with other US zoos, but also EEP institutions.
