Introduction
The international studbook for Hartmann’s mountain zebra, Equus zebra hartmannae, 2007 gives a full
overview of the living population, births, deaths and transfers over the last year, and also a full historical
listing (a printed version of this list is only available on request).
PLEASE, WOULD ALL REGISTRARS (HOLDERS AND OWNERS) ENTER THE PERMANENT STUDBOOK NUMBERS IN
THEIR RECORDS TO MAKE FUTURE COMMUNICATION ABOUT INDIVIDUAL ANIMALS EASIER. THANK YOU!
CNYN COLO:
Many of you will know that Canyon Colorado Equid Sanctuary in New Mexico, probably the largest holder
of equids in captivity, has begun to move all their animals to new owners. Unfortunately, it is not possible for
them to identify all animals individually (which studbook number) and to inform the studbooks which equid
is going where, and thus how these animals are related. I have therefore decided to give all Hartmann’s
mountain zebra which are transferred out of CNYN COLO a temporary studbook number until the North
American Equid TAG has decided how to deal with this situation. By issuing temporary numbers the
studbook can keep track of all Hartmann’s with CNYN COLO origin and their offspring as well. This allows
coordinators to analyse the relationship of future generations descending from these animals.
For this year I will keep all animals recorded for CNYN COLO in the published studbook, but please bear in
mind that some of them have by now been transferred to other institutions and therefore appear twice in this
studbook (once with a permanent number at CCES, once with a temporary number at the new institution). I
have also removed all inbreeding coefficients for these animals, since this information appears to be
incorrect.
Captive Population:
The total number of Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra in captivity as reported to the studbook keeper by
31 st December 2007 was 126.164.0 (290) in 37 institutions. In Europe 25.56.0 (81) Hartmann’s mountain
zebra were reported in 18 institutions to be held in the EEP.
An annual breakdown of births and deaths during the period of 01.01.2007 – 31.12.2007 is as follows:
2007 globally: 2007 in Europe:
Total births reported: 10.4.1 (15) Total births reported: 4.3.1 (8)
Total deaths reported: 6.5.1 (12) Total deaths reported: 3.5.1 (9)
The EEP suffered several losses of adult breeding stallions and is still very short of established breeding
groups. It is hoped that some of the new groups, which were set up last year, will have settled down enough
now to begin breeding and produce some foals for next year. On this note, the EEP is in need of another
institution to hold a small bachelor group. If your institution is interested in this species, please contact the
EEP coordinator on TanyaL@marwell.org.uk
Husbandry Guidelines:
EEP African Equids Husbandry Guidelines, edited by Ulrike Rademacher and Achim Winkler, were
published by Wilhelma Zoo, Stuttgart 2000.
Wild Population:
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species 2004 lists Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra, Equus zebra hartmannae,
as ENDANGERED (EN A1a, last assessed in 1996). For more information please have a look at
www.redlist.org .
I would like to thank all institutions, curators and registrars for their ongoing cooperation.
