PEOPLE

Juliet
A stunning beauty to behold,
ballerina Juliet Doherty
shares with EVERYONE a
look inside her dreamy world
of dance. She embodies the
elegance of ballet and the
intelligence of the youthful of
Juliet Capulet herself.

How many hours a week do you dance?
When I’m training I will dance up to 8-10 hours a day. It doesn’t always work out, but I try to take one day off a week for rest and rejuvenation.
What advice could you give aspiring dancers on health?
Respect your body and listen to what it needs. As a human your body is your home, and as an athlete your body is your instrument. I have found it so beneficial
making the distinction between food and performance. When I properly fuel myself with high quality nutrition, I feel and dance my best.
What pointe shoes do you wear usually?
My first pair of pointe shoes were Grishko 2007. Since then I have tried others but I always come back to the same Grishkos. They are my favorite.

What turning tips do you apply daily?
The basic mechanics always stay the same: strong, supported arms, high
passé, tailbone down and in line with a turned out supporting leg, core
muscles engaged, consistent spot. However, each pirouette will feel different.
It’s important to train yourself to be adaptable in the moment, especially
when you’re on stage.
What is one stretch you make sure to do everyday?
JD: I have a whole list of stretches I make sure to do each day, but if I had to
pick one it would be lunges!
What is your dream role and why?
JD: Juliet in Romeo & Juliet. I have always loved the story and the
orchestration of the ballet. The great ballerina, Julie Kent, is known for this
role and has been an influence in my life since I was very young.
Who is your dance inspiration and why?
JD: Inspiration comes from many different places for me. There are plenty of
dancers who I look up to and admire. I get inspired by things I see outside of
ballet, something I have read or heard, even a conversation I have had.
For what company do you dream to work and why?
JD: In January I’ll be moving to NYC to join the Studio Company of
American Ballet Theater (ABT). It is a dream come true to be taking this step
towards my professional career in such a world renowned company.
What keeps you going when dance gets hard or frustrating?
My family! When I start getting in my own head or get frustrated I make sure
to reach out to the people who are always there to support me and give me
guidance.
Save
Family
Photos
Rachel LaCour Niesen—photographer and owner of Save Family Photos
—believes, “Stories are the currency of our past, present and future.
Without them, we are bankrupt. Since family photos trigger those
stories, we should save and share them.”
EM: How did Save Family Photos
start?
Rachel: My grandparents were the
inspiration for Save Family Photos.
I’m lucky to have had grandparents
who loved telling stories. They have
breathed life into my project – their
legacies live through the photographs
they’ve entrusted to me. My
Mississippi grandmother had a large,
wood-paneled wall of family photos.
As a child, I used to walk along that
wall and stare at my family’s faces. I
saw my grandparents as children; my
father graduating from high school,
my uncle as a student in New York
City, my aunt at a swim meet. I saw
faces full of hopes and dreams –
before I ever existed.
! In those moments, I
realized something powerful: my
story started before ME. (And your
story started before you.)
! When my grandfather died
over a year ago, I wanted to celebrate
his life. So I started scanning old
photos of him – from his childhood to
military service to marrying my
grandmother and raising my mother.
Then, I posted a photo and story

about him on Instagram and invited
family and friends to do the same for
their loved ones. In turn, they
encouraged people in their networks
to share. Now I
receive
thousands of
family photos
and stories
from around
the world!
! An
experiment
that began as a
cathartic way
for me to
honor my
grandfather
turned into
something
much bigger.
Save Family
Photos is a
virtual
campfire; it’s a
place where
people can
gather and
share their
stories, one
photo at a
time.
EM: In your
opinion, why
do old photos
inspire and
move people
so deeply?
Rachel: Vintage photos, especially
ones of family, remind us that our
story started before us. That's why our
Save Family Photos' community
tagline is "Your story started before
you." I strongly believe that photos
are links to our past. In fact, photos
are history made visible; each image
is a clue to discovering our story.
! What's even more
remarkable is how many people have
taken a sincere interest in other
people's photos. When I started Save
Family Photos, I didn't realize how
deeply connected the community
would become. We all rally together
to celebrate family stories, one photo
at a time. It's really special!
After all, I think nostalgia is a
powerful force – it propels us to take
a deeper look into our own lives and
ask ourselves what legacy we're
leaving behind
for future
generations.
Humans are
visual
creatures;
images trigger
our memories.
In fact, 83
percent of all
learning is
processed
through vision.
That’s why I
believe photos
can catalyze
each of us to
preserve our
family history.
Our family
photos serve as
memory
triggers to help
us recall life
events and
shared
experiences.
When we take
time to talk
about our
photos, we
give them
deeper
meaning and
context that can be passed along in
the form of stories.

EM: What is the most rewarding part
of this project for you?
Rachel: Without a doubt, the most
rewarding part of this project is
hearing from followers who have
spent time asking their family
members about old photos. One
woman wrote to me and said she took
time to visit her grandma and ask
about vintage photos. She said she
had the most meaningful conversation
she'd ever had with her grandma!
Plus, she discovered that her grandma
was an adventurous young woman
once. Learning about our loved ones
is just one benefit of saving family
photos.
! As a photographer and
former journalist, I also believe
stories are the currency of our past,
present and future. Without them, we
are bankrupt. When we tell our
stories, we ensure that pieces of us
remain in the world, even when we
are long gone. In the twenty-first
century, humans are creating content
at warp-speed using digital devices.
We"re drowning in digital content.
That"s why one-of-a-kind analog
media (like Polaroids and
Kodachrome slides) are priceless
artifacts of our existence. Our old
family photos trigger those stories.
They proclaim to future generations,
“We were here! Remember us!” We
all have them, hundreds of
disorganized, deteriorating analog
photos in our homes that hold
valuable family memories.
EM: Where do you hope to see Save
Family Photos go?
Rachel: Wow, this is a great question!
There are so many possibilities on the
horizon for Save Family Photos.
Some of them are public; some are
top secret. :) Most of all, I want to
continue growing the community so
more individuals and families will
feel encouraged to save their analog
photos, before it's too late. I believe
our family photos are in danger.
! Most families have
hundreds of disorganized analog
photos deteriorating in their homes.
These photos hold valuable family
memories and are highly susceptible
to damage and loss. To historians,
family photos exist on the margins of
global history — they aren’t
considered “newsworthy” enough to
be catalogued in the National
Archives. Yet for families, photos are
visible accounts of personal history.
Within each collection, there are
icons of ancestry in the form of
“We!re drowning in
digital content.
That!s why one-ofa-kind
analog
media (like
Polaroids and
Kodachrome slides)
are priceless
artifacts of our
existence.”
birthdays, weddings and
anniversaries.
EM: What is the most moving story
you've featured?
Rachel: It's tough to choose just one!
There are so many that are poignant
and memorable. From the simple
photo of a first bike ride to holiday
celebrations and photos from war
zones, every image tells a story. In
fact, I think the total collection of
images is even more powerful than
any single image. Does that make
sense? When I look through all of the
photos, from thousands of families
around the world, I am humbled. I see
faces and eyes that reveal stories of
bravery, passion, commitment, love,
faith and hope. Each of them is
unique, but together, they tell a
universal story about the importance
of family.
! Seeing all of the photos
together, in a collection on Instagram
or on the Save Family Photos blog, is
what moves me most. Together, we
have created something special – a
safe space for sharing stories about
those whom we love most.
EM: If you could find one rare
historical photo to share, who would
be in it and why?
Rachel: That's easy! Stephen
Colbert's family photos interest me.
Recently, he appeared on a PBS series
called "Faces of America," where he
shared stories about how his family
came to the United States. He was
really engaging and passionate about
his history. I am fascinated by public
figures who are genuinely interested
in their family history. Sharing some
of Stephen Colbert's vintage family
photos on the @savefamilyphotos
project would be awesome!

teens. We met in high
school and lost touch for
some time after then.
When we reconnected we
just knew that this was
one form of expression we
wanted to pursue
professionally.
already have the style and the
attitude we just want to give
them that extra nudge to
embrace it. We want our clients
to feel comfortable and
empowering in our clothing and
sexy all at the same time.
Mark and Estel made fashion
and music history as the first fashion
designers ever to perform their own
songs live on the runway in
September 2013, during their RTW
debut at Mercedes- Benz Fashion
Week, New York. Their fashion
collections are created to be
wearable versions of their music, and
they create and perform all of the
music for their runway shows. The
duo launched their fashion brand
“Mark and Estel” in Los Angeles in
2005. Made in the USA, the Mark
and Estel fashion line boasts
signature fashion tees, flowing
dresses and iconic cutout leggings
alongside ready to wear jackets and
separates. The duo’s rocker style
and love of music signaled the
simultaneous launch of their band
“Mark and Estel,” and their fashion/
music hybrid quickly became their
brand signature.

M&E: There was never just one
moment...We were both always
passionate about expressing
ourselves through different art
forms [be that music, art, or
fashion]. Sketching here and
there as a child, and going
through the fashion fads as

M&E: Our
designs are
strongly
inspired by
our music. A lot of
our edge and rock
vibes come from
the music. As we
combine the two
together, we like to
embody that same
rock n roll mood
that we portray in
our music into our
designs.

M&E: We want our
clients to feel like
the rockstars they
already are. They

Unleashing their inner rockstar
will achieve all of that.

M&E: It is always a great honor to
see stars in our designs. In the
beginning, we started out
sewing t shirts from a studio
apartment in Hollywood, and
now seeing some of our favorite
rockstars stepping out in Mark
and Estel is very humbling, it
really shows how far we have
come along.

M&E: Mark and Estel strongly
emphasizes staying true to one
self inside and out, as both a
brand and individuals. We
couldn't express a better way of
staying true to our own style
than by combining our two
passions of music and
fashion. Music has always been
a natural influence to our style.
And as we do through our
designs, we like to portray the
rock n roll mood of music
through fashion.

M&E: As designers we are
constantly evolving prepping for
the seasons ahead...Do we see
Mark and Estel evolving in the
next 5 years? Of course. We
expect to continue our merging
of music and fashion as one and
expand it across all aspects. We
already have quite a few exciting
ventures planned for the brand
ahead. But you will have to stay
tuned.

M&E: Unleash your inner
rockstar. The Mark and Estel
brand has always celebrated
women. Our is goal to
accentuate a womens natural
beauty, and always make them
feel comfortable and still feel
sexy at all times.
