WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
@JaysonBraddock (8/28/15): This Blake Bortles is not the same
guy I evaluated pre-draft last year. His growth in 1 year is really
unbelievable.
@SI_PeterKing (8/28/15): You don’t want to overrate the preseason.
But Bortles sees field better w/better touch than last
year. And he loves Hurns.
Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell (8/4/15): “From where he’s at now
compared to where he came in last year as a rookie, I think it’s
night and day. From the day he stepped on the practice field
last year to the first day of training camp this year his ease of
throwing motion, the tightness of his ball, the compactness of his
motion, the quicker release, the footwork, the balance -- all those
things I think are better. And just his overall presence. He’s comfotable
now. I’ve got to give him a lot of credit. He took the bull
by the horns and was proactive with it and has done a nice job.”
Jaguars HC Gus Bradley (8/2/15): “His mechanics, his poise,
his big thing is he wants to own the offense so he can play at a
higher level without thinking a lot and that’s what he’s doing. You
can tell he put in time over the summer with the knowledge of
the offense. They have to have no doubt and in order to have no
doubt, you’ve got to put the time in, so to me you’re seeing him
play with no dobut and no fear and that’s a good sign.”
Jaguars OC Greg Olson (6/2/15): “He’s a real hard-worker,
self-starter, a very self-motivated player, and he’s got good talent,
so I’m working with a guy that’s a younger player, that wants
to get better and he’s been in early every day and he stays late.
He’s one of the first guys here in the morning and he’s one of the
last guys to leave.”
OPPONENTS ON BORTLES
Texans DE J.J. Watt (12/4/14): “[Bortles] is a strong kid and he
can run — I think that’s one thing that is sometimes overlooked
so you have to make sure you’re aware of your pass-rush lanes and
keep him contained.”
Browns Head Coach Mike Pettine (10/15/14): “We had a lot of
respect for (Blake) Bortles coming out; didn’t know a lot about
him until we had a chance to go and work him out and visit with
him and came away very impressed. It’s not a surprise to us that
he’s having the success that he’s having. He can make all the
throws. He can extend plays with his feet. He’s not afraid to tuck
it and run if he has to. Just looking at his completion percentage
is impressive.”
Titans DT Jurrell Casey (10/12/14): “(Blake) did a great job
today. I can’t knock him, he did a heck of a job getting out of the
way of pressure, getting them back into the game at the end, he
did a great job. He’s got a lot of work to do, but I think he’s going
to be a top quarterback one of these days.”
Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (10/2/14): “I liked him coming
out. I thought he was the most ready and a guy that I thought
could be the best, just because I think the things he does: He can
extend plays, he can stay in, he can throw the ball, he can throw
on the run. He is an impressive-type young player. He makes some
rookie mistakes but he also makes some plays that you don’t expect
rookies to make in a good way.”
Chargers CB Brandon Flowers (9/28/14): “Bortles is a very
poised quarterback. He made some key throws early. It didn’t take
me by surprise. I used to watch him in college. I always thought
he was a great quarterback. He was the top quarterback taken for
a reason. He definitely has all the tools and the sky is the limit
for him.”
