2012 USF Fighting Saints Volleyball 1

Head Coach Cara Currier
Cara Currier embarks
on her 11th season as
head volleyball coach
at University of St.
Francis joining fellow
Saint head coaches
Paul Downey (men’s
golf) and Rebecca
Boyter (Spiritline) in
their second decade
of serving the USF department
of athletics.
Currier, who has
had only one team
(2006) finish under
.500 in her first 10
seasons, is hoping to
get back to where she
was in her first year
as head coach of the Saints – the NAIA National Championship
Tournament.
After spending the 2000 and 2001 seasons as USF’s
assistant volleyball coach, Currier took over the Saints’
program in 2002 and found immediate success. Her initial
team not only posted a 35-9 mark, but also advanced
to the NAIA national tourney, where it tied for 11th place.
In addition, Currier and her contingent added a Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title
and an NAIA Region VII tournament championship to
their list of accomplishments in her inaugural campaign.
In her sixth season in 2007, Currier added two more
firsts to her coaching credentials at St. Francis – a CCAC
regular-season championship and a CCAC Coach of the
Year award. She directed the Saints to a share of the
league title with rival Saint Xavier, and the team claimed
the No. 1 seed in the CCAC postseason tournament thanks
to a three-set sweep of the Cougars in the regular-season
meeting.
The Saints narrowly missed adding the CCAC tournament
title to their 2007 accomplishments, losing a hardfought
four-set match at home to defending champion
Olivet Nazarene.
Currier, who posted her 200th career collegiate
coaching victory in 2009, stands 255-166 in her 10 years
at the USF helm.
In addition to her responsibilities as head volleyball
coach, Currier also serves as an assistant director of athletics
at USF.
Prior to arriving at St. Francis, Currier spent five years
as a math teacher and coach at Plainfield Central High
School. In her four years as the girls’ varsity volleyball
coach, the Wildcats went 46-68-6. She also served as the
head softball coach on the sophomore level all five years.
Currier received bachelor of arts degrees in both
mathematics and secondary education from Augustana
(Ill.) College in 1990 and a master of science degree in
sports management from Western Illinois University in
1998.
While attending Augustana, Currier posted a 3.31
grade point average and earned a total of 11 letters in
volleyball, swimming and softball. Her collegiate honors
included being named a softball Academic All-American,
earning selection to the Dean’s List and serving as a team
captain. She also was an all-conference performer in both
softball and swimming, and was the recipient of the Outstanding
Participant Award at the College Conference of
Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Swimming Championships.
During her prep career at Hononegah High School in
Rockton, Currier was a three-sport athlete, competing in
volleyball, basketball and softball.
Currier is the mother of twin daughters, Ashley and
Haley, who were born in 2003. The family resides in Minooka.
Assistant Coaches
Jeana Pekol
Former University of St. Francis volleyball player Jeana (Carrico) Pekol enters her 10th
season as Cara Currier’s right hand and chief consultant on the Saints’ coaching staff.
Pekol played her senior season at USF in 1998 and was named to the All-Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference team that year. She also was recognized twice as the league’s
player of the week.
Before transferring to USF, Pekol competed at NCAA Division II University of Missouri-
St. Louis her freshman year and Division I Northeastern Illinois University the following
two seasons. While at UMSL, she was voted as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics
Association Freshman of the Year. She gained honors at Northeastern Illinois as well, making
the All-Mid-Continent Conference Team.
Pekol, a member of the Kappa Delta Phi International Honor Society, also was the vicepresident
of the Student-Athlete Advisory Board while at Northeastern Illinois. Her previous
coaching background includes working at St. Francis’ All-American Camp and both the Peru
Park District and La Salle-Peru High School summer camps. She also coached the Illinois
Valley Volley Power club team.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from USF in 1999, Pekol went on to get her master’s in
educational leadership from Aurora University in 2004.
In addition to coaching at USF, Pekol serves as principal at Minooka Intermediate School. She and her husband, Scott, a
former USF basketball player, live in Joliet with their twin sons, Zach and Luke.
Kelly Van Duyne
An All-American and four-year volleyball letter winner at St. Francis from 1998-2001,
Kelly (Orszulak) Van Duyne begins her second year with the USF coaching staff this fall.
Van Duyne capped her playing career in 2001 with selection to the NAIA All-America
Team as an honorable mention pick. That same year she also garnered NAIA All-Region VII
and All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference recognition.
During her four-year career, Van Duyne helped the Saints compile an overall record of
99-49, good for a .668 winning percentage.
Van Duyne earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Francis in 2002.
After graduation, she spent time as a teacher, assistant director of a day care center, and youth
and family director at a local YMCA.
Van Duyne lives in Wilmington with her husband, Sam, and the couple’s three children,
Logan, Travis, and Eli.
Sarah Ahline
Three-time All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference outside hitter Sarah Ahline
joins the coaching staff at her alma mater this season.
A four-year letter winner for the Saints, Ahline capped her stellar career in 2011 with her
third straight selection to the All-CCAC Team after ranking second on the team in total kills
(360) and kills per set (2.59).
Ahline emerged as a significant contributor as a freshman in 2008 as she ranked fourth on
the club with 1.71 kills per set and led all USF first-years with 42 blocks. She earned All-CCAC
honorable mention accolades in 2009 following a season in which she registered 326 kills and
a team-best .240 attack percentage. Then in 2010 she garnered All-CCAC Second Team honors
on the strength of her 293 kills.
A volleyball and track & field athlete at Lemont (Ill.) High School, Ahline studied radiation
therapy as an undergraduate at St. Francis. She is single and resides in Joliet.
2012 Season Outlook
University of St. Francis Head Coach
Cara Currier will have at her disposal in
2012 one of the most experienced teams
of her 11-year tenure at the helm of the
USF volleyball program.
Of the nine players who saw action
in at least 80 sets for last year’s 25-16
squad, eight return this fall. Six of those
eight returnees played in at least 100
sets.
Richards Returns at Setter
At the setter position, senior Ashley
Richards is back after starting all or part
of the last three seasons. After being
thrust into the role as a freshman in
2009 because of an injury to veteran
starter Kelsey Polte, Richards shared the
starting spot the following year before
taking over as the everyday setter in
2011.
In 145 sets over 41 matches last fall,
Richards recorded 1,396 assists (9.63
per set) with a .390 percentage while
collecting 40 or more assists on 15 occasions.
She also shared the team lead with
41 service aces.
In her three years at USF, Richards
has totaled 3,801 assists to go along with
100 aces.
Backing up Richards will be junior
Hannah Hunnicutt, who saw limited
action a year ago after redshirting
in 2010, as well as freshmen Megan
Mowery and Brittany Showalter.
On the Outside
USF’s most decorated player during
the past three years, senior Jazzmyne
Robbins is set to conclude her stellar
career this season. A three-time
All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic
Conference First Team outside hitter,
Robbins has clubbed 1,525 kills since her
arrival at St. Francis in 2009.
In 2011, Robbins led the Saints in
kills (537) for the third time in as many
years. She turned in 30 double-digit kill
performances in 41 matches, including
five matches where she hit 20 or more.
Her .299 attack percentage also stood as
the best mark on the team.
Robbins hit 433 kills as a sophomore
after being cited as the CCAC Freshman
of the Year in 2009, a season in which
she led the league with 555 kills.
St. Francis will also look to senior
Ashley Thompson to provide a complement
to Robbins on the outside.
Competing in 31 of the Saints’ 41 contests
a year ago, she hit a career-best 130
kills.
Junior college transfer Laura Wills
and freshman Hayley Wacker should
also figure in the mix at the outside hitter
position, while Mowery looks to contribute
on the right side.
In the Middle
St. Francis returns its top two blocking
leaders from a year ago in junior Kate
McIlvanie and sophomore Caleigh Hill.
Last season, McIlvanie led the club
with 22 block solos, 62 block assists
and 84 total blocks, while Hill was next
in each of those categories (17, 50, 67).
Both players also contributed as hitters
as Hill (.263) and McIlvanie (.261)
posted the Saints’ second- and third-best
attack percentages.
Joining McIlvanie and Hill is sophomore
Paige Reinert, who turned in a
solid debut season in 2011 with 48 total
blocks and a .255 attack percentage.
Kate McIlvanie was the Saints’ leading blocker in 2011.
Three-time All-CCAC 1st Team OH Jazzmyne Robbins
Deep Defensive Unit
Senior Dana Wettergren leads a deep
unit of defensive specialists. Playing in
147 of a possible 148 sets last season,
she topped the Saints in digs (720), digs
per set (4.90) and reception percentage
(.956) in addition to sharing the club
lead in service aces (41).
Wettergren posted double-digit
digs in 39 of 41 matches, including 29
straight to end the 2011 campaign. She
notched 20 or more digs on 18 occasions
with a season-high 27 against CCAC rival
Robert Morris University. She enters her
senior year with 1,392 career digs.
Senior Laura Shain and junior
Breanne Shaw also look to make major
contributions in the backcourt along
with incoming junior transfer Mallory
Frankovich.
Last fall, Shain (421) and Shaw
(462) combined for approximately one
third of the Saints’ total receptions while
collecting nearly 500 digs between them
(Shaw 288, Shain 200). In 2010 Shaw led
the Saints with 592 digs.
Senior Breanna Rivera, who had
106 digs a year ago, bolsters the Saints’
defensive corps.
20 2012 USF Fighting Saints Volleyball

Patrick J. Sullivan Center
PATRICK J. SULLIVAN CENTER/PAT QUIGLEY COURT
The centerpiece of St. Francis Athletics – the Patrick J. Sullivan Center – opened in 1986 and serves as the
home venue for the Saints’ men’s and women’s basketball teams and volleyball team. The facility also
houses the athletic department offices, the athletic training room, the USF Fitness Center, two racquetball
courts, a golf hitting studio and numerous locker rooms.
The Recreation Center was renamed the Patrick J. Sullivan Center in the fall of 2010. Sullivan was the longtime
men’s basketball coach (1976-2010), director of athletics (1986-2000) and athletics chairman (2000-
10) for the Saints prior to his retirement following the 2009-10 basketball season.
The playing court in the Sullivan Center was named after the late Pat Quigley back in 1994. Quigley, a
member of the USF Hall of Fame who completed his basketball playing career in 1981, lost his battle
with cancer in 1994. Several of his USF teammates, led by his close friends Mike Brennan and Ron Kenny,
spearheaded a drive to donate scholarship funds in honor of their classmate and have the court dedicated
in his memory.
The Sullivan Center has taken on a new look in the past two years. New scoreboards and a courtside
scorer’s table and message center were added prior to the 2010-11 seasons. A large banner with the
Fighting Saints’ new logo was displayed on the west wall. The playing court was refinished and repainted
in the summer of 2011 and new wall padding and a new sound system were added this past summer.
