Dr Michael Makdissi<br />

Michael is a sports physician<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g at Olympic Park <strong>Sports</strong><br />

Medic<strong>in</strong>e Centre. His current team<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tments <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> Hawthorn<br />

Footb<strong>all</strong> Club and <strong>the</strong> AIS-AFL<br />

academy. In 2006 Michael<br />

completed a PhD on concussion <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Australia</strong>n Rules Footb<strong>all</strong> and his<br />

current research position is with<br />

NHMRC tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g fellowship at <strong>the</strong><br />

Melbourne Bra<strong>in</strong> Centre (University<br />

of Melbourne).<br />

Kylie consults to <strong>the</strong> Victorian Institute<br />

club. She is also <strong>the</strong> consultant sports<br />

dietitian to <strong>the</strong> state gymnastics<br />

program and keeps herself busy<br />

Wendy Braybon<br />

Wendy is a specialist sports<br />

physio<strong>the</strong>rapist, specialis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

particularly <strong>in</strong> throw<strong>in</strong>g athletes<br />

shoulder problems. She is also<br />

an APA titled musculoskeletal<br />

physio<strong>the</strong>rapist. Wendy travelled<br />

for many years with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

Softb<strong>all</strong> team and is now <strong>the</strong><br />

physio<strong>the</strong>rapist with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

gymnastics team. She has been an<br />

<strong>Australia</strong>n team physio<strong>the</strong>rapist at<br />

four Olympic Games and was<br />

recently named <strong>the</strong> head<br />

physio<strong>the</strong>rapist to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />

Olympic team for London.<br />

Wendy was head physio<strong>the</strong>rapist for<br />

<strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g teams at <strong>the</strong><br />

Commonwealth Games <strong>in</strong> Melbourne<br />

and travelled to Delhi with <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Australia</strong>n team last year. Wendy<br />

lectures on <strong>the</strong> Masters Physio<strong>the</strong>rapy<br />

course at Melbourne University and is<br />

<strong>the</strong> head physio<strong>the</strong>rapist at <strong>the</strong><br />

Victorian Institute of Sport. She also<br />

works <strong>in</strong> private practice at Melbourne<br />

Physio<strong>the</strong>rapy Group.<br />

Dr Adam Bryant<br />

Adam is a biomechanist and full-time<br />

Senior Lecturer work<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Department of Physio<strong>the</strong>rapy and <strong>the</strong><br />

Centre for Health Exercise & <strong>Sports</strong><br />

Medic<strong>in</strong>e (CHESM) at The University<br />

of Melbourne (<strong>Australia</strong>). A focus of<br />

his research has been <strong>the</strong><br />

biomechanical and neuromuscular<br />

adaptations that occur follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)<br />

rupture and reconstruction.<br />

Dr David Connell<br />

David is a musculoskeletal radiologist<br />

at <strong>the</strong> new diagnostic and treatment<br />

facility located <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Olympic Park<br />

prec<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>in</strong> Melbourne. He has a<br />

special <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> muscle and tendon<br />

<strong>in</strong>juries and is <strong>the</strong> author of 81<br />

publications and book chapters.<br />

He is married to his beautiful wife<br />

Karen and <strong>the</strong>y have three<br />

troublesome children.<br />

Professor Rob<strong>in</strong> Daly<br />

Rob<strong>in</strong> holds <strong>the</strong> position of Chair <strong>in</strong><br />

Exercise and Age<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre<br />

for Physical Activity and Nutrition<br />

Research at Deak<strong>in</strong> University.<br />

His ma<strong>in</strong> research <strong>in</strong>terests are on<br />

<strong>the</strong> role of exercise and nutrition,<br />

particularly calcium, vitam<strong>in</strong> D and<br />

prote<strong>in</strong>, for optimis<strong>in</strong>g musculoskeletal<br />

health and function dur<strong>in</strong>g both<br />

growth and age<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Mr Greg Hoy<br />

Greg graduated from Monash<br />

Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 1981 and orthopaedic<br />

surgery <strong>in</strong> 1990. Greg is one of only<br />

two dual qualified practitioners <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se two fields <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. He spent<br />

2 ½ years <strong>in</strong> Germany, UK, USA and<br />

Adelaide tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g as a sub-specialist,<br />

return<strong>in</strong>g to Melbourne Orthopaedic<br />

Group as a Hand and Upper Limb<br />

Surgeon <strong>in</strong> 1993. Greg is passionate<br />

about sports medic<strong>in</strong>e and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

He lecturers at Monash Dept of<br />

Surgery and teaches on <strong>the</strong> post-grad<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs on Orthopaedics<br />

and sports medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Greg has volunteered for two<br />

<strong>in</strong>terplast missions and several o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

volunteer surgical missions to Sri<br />

Lanka follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2005 tsunami.<br />

Currently Greg has associations with<br />

every major sport<strong>in</strong>g code <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>,<br />

which <strong>in</strong>clude Melbourne Rebels<br />

Super 15 Rugby, Melbourne Storm<br />

and last year, players from 9 of <strong>the</strong><br />

16 AFL teams. He manages cricket<br />

players from <strong>Australia</strong>, Sri Lanka, India<br />

and Bangladesh. He consults to AIS,<br />

VIS, athletes, gymnasts and even<br />

circus arts academies.<br />

James Karageorgiou<br />

James is <strong>the</strong> current senior Strength<br />

and Condition<strong>in</strong>g Coach for <strong>the</strong><br />

Victorian Institute of Sport programs<br />

of Gymnastics, Athletics and Hockey.<br />

From 2005-2009 James was <strong>the</strong><br />

senior Strength and Condition<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Coach at <strong>the</strong> English Institute of<br />

<strong>Sports</strong> with Athletics. James also has<br />

a competitive background <strong>in</strong> Olympic<br />

Weightlift<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Daniela Manche<br />

Daniela consults to <strong>the</strong> Victorian<br />

Institute of Sport, St Kilda Footb<strong>all</strong><br />

Club, <strong>Sports</strong> Dietitians <strong>Australia</strong> and<br />

runs a Melbourne-based private<br />

practice. She enjoys work<strong>in</strong>g with<br />

different athletes and different ages<br />

and has a specialist <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />

hydration and supplements <strong>in</strong> sport.<br />

Deborah Pascoe<br />

Deborah is a Lecturer <strong>in</strong> Cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

Exercise Physiology at <strong>the</strong> University<br />

of B<strong>all</strong>arat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> areas of exercise<br />

prescription, musculoskeletal<br />

rehabilitation and f<strong>all</strong>s prevention.<br />

She has conducted research on<br />

f<strong>all</strong>s prevention programs and has<br />

developed and presented<br />

undergraduate and cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g<br />

professional education courses on<br />

Mr Sam Patten<br />

Sam specialises <strong>in</strong> hips and knees<br />

from <strong>in</strong>jury and arthritis. Sam currently<br />

works at <strong>the</strong> Mercy Private and<br />

Epworth Hospitals. His practice<br />

specific<strong>all</strong>y focuses on hip arthritis<br />

and imp<strong>in</strong>gement surgery with<br />

Professor Rod Snow<br />

Rod is Deputy <strong>Head</strong> of <strong>the</strong> School<br />

of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at<br />

Deak<strong>in</strong> University. He is an Exercise<br />

Physiologist with expertise <strong>in</strong> human<br />

skeletal muscle metabolism and<br />

performance.<br />

Fiona Su<strong>the</strong>rland<br />

Fiona is a specialist <strong>in</strong> weightrestricted<br />

and aes<strong>the</strong>tic sports as<br />

well as eat<strong>in</strong>g behaviour and eat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

disorders. Fiona currently consults to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n B<strong>all</strong>et School, Victorian<br />

Institute of Sport Gymnastics<br />

program, Rac<strong>in</strong>g Victoria Jockey<br />

Apprenticeship program and runs a<br />

<strong>the</strong>rapy group for women with bulimia<br />

Dr Krys Szatsznajder<br />

Krys is a General Practitioner with<br />

special <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> sports medic<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

He has been work<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong><br />

National Row<strong>in</strong>g team s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005<br />

travell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>over</strong>seas regularly as a team<br />

doctor. He is also <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> row<strong>in</strong>g<br />

at club and school level. His special<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest is <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury prevention <strong>in</strong> sport<br />

through multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary approach.<br />

Sport<strong>in</strong>g background <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

athletics as a pole-vaulter.<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ton Wa<strong>in</strong><br />

After complet<strong>in</strong>g a BA <strong>in</strong> Human<br />

Movement and Post Graduate studies<br />

<strong>in</strong> Exercise Physiology, Cl<strong>in</strong>ton entered<br />

<strong>the</strong> field of elite sport and cl<strong>in</strong>ical base<br />

neuro rehabilitation. Now work<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

an Exercise Physiologist and Mental<br />

Health Cl<strong>in</strong>ician for <strong>the</strong> past 6 years,<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ton took part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> film<strong>in</strong>g of a<br />

national documentary titled ‘Addiction’<br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> positive effects of<br />

exercise for those suffer<strong>in</strong>g mental<br />

illness/addiction. Cl<strong>in</strong>ton is currently<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g full time <strong>in</strong> a private practice<br />

while he completes his masters<br />

degree which seeks to fur<strong>the</strong>r explore<br />

<strong>the</strong> role of sports medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

treatment of mental illness/addiction.<br />

Henry Wajswelner<br />

Henry is a specialist sports<br />

physio<strong>the</strong>rapist who learnt his trade at<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n Institute of Sport and<br />

Olympic Park <strong>Sports</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>e Centre.<br />

A former Olympic Row<strong>in</strong>g Team<br />

Physio<strong>the</strong>rapist he now manages<br />

DMA Cl<strong>in</strong>ical Pilates <strong>in</strong> South Yarra<br />

and consults privately, specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

chronic back and hip problems.<br />

Dr Susan White<br />

Lisa Szatsznajder<br />

Lisa represented <strong>Australia</strong> three<br />

times as a heavyweight rower,<br />

w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g a bronze and a silver medal<br />

at <strong>the</strong> 2007 and 2008 U/23 World<br />

Championships. Lisa was <strong>the</strong><br />

sm<strong>all</strong>est heavyweight <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />

After spend<strong>in</strong>g a year at <strong>the</strong> AIS <strong>in</strong><br />

Canberra on a row<strong>in</strong>g scholarship,<br />

Lisa was strongly recommended to<br />

do lightweight. She lost 10kgs and<br />

had a sk<strong>in</strong> fold of 33. Lisa broke <strong>the</strong><br />

national lightweight records and<br />

prospects for London were look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

great. In a couple of months, Lisa<br />

unfortunately became very sick -<br />

ment<strong>all</strong>y and physic<strong>all</strong>y and has<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce retired from row<strong>in</strong>g and is still<br />

deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> aftermath of a mild<br />

eat<strong>in</strong>g disorder.<br />
