HOLY ROSARY PARISH COUNCIL
October, 2009 Minutes
Special Guest: Joan Genoino, Sports Coordinator
Opening prayer was offered by Father Aufieri.
Minutes from the September, 2009 meeting was reviewed. Diane Murphy brought to the attention
of the council that the school does have a music program and a band program, just not for the
upper grades. Alyce clarified that her comments were in response to John Colangelo discussion
about the expansion of the choir. She asked if the expansion could include the school.
Constitution committee meeting some time this month to review the current constitution and make
changes, if any. If anyone wants to be on a committee, they should inform Ron Capriotti or John
Moran.
Copies of the constitution and of the agenda were available for review at the meeting.
Old Business: October 3rd was the farewell for Sister Linda after the 5 o’clock mass. Quite a
number of people were there, including Msgr. Richard and Father Joy.
On October 13th parish council members visited Archbishop Dolan for a prayer service at St.
Peter’s Church. A number of members had an opportunity to meet the Archbishop at a reception
that followed.
Last Saturday, we had a thank you social after the 5 o’clock mass in the parish center. This year
it took place on a Saturday night as opposed to a Sunday. Next year, the plan is to meet for the
rosary at 4:30 before 5:00 o’clock mass and then attend the social.
Diane Murphy said “thank you” for the get-well gift, and all the prayers and cards.
-The after-school academy began October 26th, had 117 children in attendance. 12 week
program consisting of: Computer science, art club, speech and drama, journalism, peer tutoring,
Math 9 and Math Club for 4, 5 and 6th grades. Bi-Weekly information will be posted in the
bulletin to keep the parents informed.
-Grandparents’ day on November 20th. 8:30 am or 9:00 am liturgy followed with entertainment
and refreshments.
-October 17th Casey Fosum and Jason Fosum were awarded the Shining Star Award by CYO.
They were very gracious in accepting the honor, congratulations to them.
New Business: Parish Council Christmas Party. There is no meeting during the month of
December but the Christmas tree lighting is December 19th a Saturday after the 5:00pm mass.
Would the council be interested in meeting after the tree lighting, not a meeting, a social
gathering?
Eileen Bobe would like to continue her service to the Church with regards to the advent tree. She
will contact Laurel Fulcher in order to have the children of the School of Religion prepare the
paper angels that are to be hung on the tree.

Father Aufieri would like to add to Diane’s report. The alumni association of Holy Rosary School
has made a donation to the school. 10 of our classrooms currently have blinds. The plan is to do
the rest of the blinds before Christmas and throw in something for the school office.
There was a Calendar review. Father Aufieri shared his feelings with the council that he feels we
need time in the parish to step back a little and set aside some days. For example, on National
holidays we are not going to meet. That’s approximately six or seven times a year we are able to
give the rectory staff some much deserved time off.
John Moran had brought to the council a comprehensive proposal regarding solar panels. Mike
Miranda to speak to Ed Piszko with regards to this proposal.
Restorative maintenance is being done around the parish. Roofs were replaced; cushions in the
church cleaned; stucco on the rectory and Sand Lane property being repaired. These are little
things that needed addressing.
There will be a Parish mission on Sunday, December 6th, presented by a Franciscan Friar,
Father Joe Hertel, @ the 10:00, 11:30, and 12:45 masses. He will be inviting everyone to come
back that night for a penance service.
Also, Holy Rosary will be celebrating mass for the first time in Spanish Our Lady of Guadalupe
December 11th, celebrated by Father Walter.
Father Aufieri reported that the Teen Club and parenting got off to a slow start but that this is
something he wants to keep going.
We should look to members of the parish for resources. There is a Mass on Sand Lane for the
Polish community. We should reach out to that group.
There was a desire to try and coordinate parish function with those taking place in public
schools. The intention is to try and not have conflicts with scheduled events.
Joan Genoino came to speak to the parish council with regards to the sports program of Holy
Rosary.
She reported that Holy Rosary has a large basketball program. Summer intramural with 90 kids.
One night of practice and game during the week. Ten people that volunteer. In the Fall there are
15 teams, 170 kids, with 30 volunteers, coaches, etc. The basketball size has stayed the same.
Still getting a nice turn out for the parish program. The idea will be to get some flyers out earlier,
maybe to the school of religion and polish community.
There will be a sports mass this Sunday at 11:30; all teams and coaches will be at the mass.
Season starts November 1st. The parish rents out the gym to a few programs. We do rent out to
Simba, a Philippino group, AAU teams also, but we are selective who we rent out to, but do rent
out to make a few dollars for the church. The accounting program has been set up.
It was discussed how difficult it is to get girls to play sports. Cheerleading and dance may be a
suggestion for girls; we already tried soccer.
Questions were posed as to why it fizzled out. Maybe we can try again. Get more parents
involved. SI parents’ magazine is a great resource for parents. Maybe publicize in the magazine.
Open Forum: Father Steve announced that there is a major renovation project taking place at
Sand Lane thanks to Project Hospitality. New showers, bathroom, and plumbing performed by
general contractors. Eagle Scouts will also be on hand to provide painting services. We are

hoping Project Hospitality will pay for all of it. The water splashed against the doors and causing
water damage. The clothes closet has been closed since September due to water damage from
the shower above it. There will be two stand up stalls, two toilets and a sink out in the hallway.
The next meeting will be held on November 16 at 7:30 pm at the Parish Center.
Respectfully submitted,
