There is, today, a dimension of design that places
more value on processes than results. And it is
precisely there that we must aspire to a lightness
of touch because the ongoing emergencies,
constraints and fears have ruled this quality out of
the creative process.
How? By giving ourselves time, looking for that
stream of consciousness, exactly that creative act
in which a sense of autonomy and competence,
awareness and focus, makes us mild and
indifferent to the passage of time ...
Esiste, oggi, una dimensione del design che
dà più valore ai processi che ai risultati. Ed è
proprio lì che si deve aspirare alla leggerezza
perché le continue emergenze, i vincoli e
le paure hanno escluso questa qualità dal
percorso creativo. Come? Dandosi tempo,
cercando quel flusso di coscienza, proprio
dell’atto creativo, nel quale un sentimento di
autonomia e competenza, di consapevolezza e
focalizzazione, ci rende lievi e indifferenti al
passare del tempo…

A sense of lightness, in contrast to the

fear and loneliness.
Instead, lightness requires depth, preparation
and accuracy, as Fabiola Giannotti (the
top woman manager at Cern) recently
demonstrated, by explaining the Higgs Boson
in simple terms to many viewers of the small
screen. An attitude of humble people,
who continue in their work with great passion
every day.
Leggerezza, in contrasto con il bombardamento
di cattive notizie che provocano rancore, paura
e solitudine. La leggerezza richiede invece
profondità, preparazione e precisione. Come
ha recentemente dimostrato Fabiola Giannotti
prima donna alla direzione al Cern, spiegando
in poche battute il Bosone di Higgs a molti
spettatori del piccolo schermo.
Un’attitudine di persone umili, che perseverano
ogni giorno nel proprio operato con profonda
passione.
SATURNINO CELANI
Light weights, light glasses, light music, I made
a mistake I took this thing too lightly, you’re
too lightly dressed, you’ll get cold, this bass is
beautiful but is it light? “Can I help you?” No
it’s light thanks, I can do it, I swear she means
nothing to me, it was just light-hearted. I grew
up with these phrases heard and repeated
ad infinitum without having ever given the
right weight to this marvellous adjective
then one day I met Gianluigi Merletti the
founder of Merletti AEREOSPACE, an example
of pure Italian excellence that the world
envies us. While he was telling me about his
unconditional passion for his work, he said:
“Saturnino, every single part that goes to
make up a flying machine must have two
fundamental characteristics: maximum
resistance and maximum lightness”.
That meeting was a revelation for me.
Pesi leggeri, occhiali leggeri, Musica leggera,
ho sbagliato ho preso questa cosa troppo alla
leggera, ti sei vestito troppo leggero prendi
freddo, questo basso è molto bello, ma è leggero?
“Ti aiuto?” No è leggero grazie ce la faccio,
ti giuro che lei per me non significa niente è
stata una leggerezza. Sono cresciuto con queste
frasi ascoltate e ripetute all’infinito senza aver
mai dato il giusto peso a questo meraviglioso
aggettivo poi, un giorno, ho incontrato
Gianluigi Merletti fondatore della Merletti
AEREOSPACE eccellenza tutta italiana che il
mondo ci invidia. Mentre mi raccontava l’amore
incondizionato per il suo lavoro mi ha detto:
“Saturnino ogni singolo pezzo che compone
una macchina volante deve avere due
caratteristiche fondamentali: massima
Resistenza, massima Leggerezza”.
Quell’incontro è stato per me una rivelazione.

We have learned from the best Japanese
companies that quality goes through a
discipline of subtraction. The agile business
(lean) is improved by eliminating anything that
diverts attention from the end result. If Calvino
tried to remove weight from the structure of
the story and language, the agile organization
seeks to eliminate bureaucracy and warehouses
that take away from the perfect product. In
writing as well as in manufacturing everything
requires awareness, determination and, above
all, patience.
Abbiamo imparato dalle migliori imprese
giapponesi che la qualità passa attraverso
una disciplina della sottrazione. L’impresa
agile (lean) si migliora eliminando tutto ciò
che distoglie l’attenzione rispetto al risultato
finale. Se Calvino ha cercato di togliere peso
alla struttura del racconto e al linguaggio,
l’organizzazione agile cerca di eliminare
magazzini e burocrazia che allontanano dal
prodotto perfetto. Nella scrittura così come nella
manifattura tutto ciò richiede consapevolezza,
determinazione e, soprattutto, pazienza.
