64 CIRCLE MINDS The sound of each step guides our attention towards our pace in space. It is a fact whose awareness requires a highly complex perceptual deviation, unknown and mysterious, rooted in the direction of gravity, down towards the center of the Earth. Swift steps marked by the striking of heels on a wooden corridor in the twilight; the stamping of bootshod feet in the crush of a summer game; the heavy steps of collective marching in yet another North Korean parade; creeping domestic shuffling interspersed with the silence of the meeting of a step with the carpet in the living room; the synchronous alternation of breath and running through a crowded urban marathon. These few examples hint at the complexity of the interaction between the cultural indication of a primary form of physical behaviour (the walking gait), the sensorial amplitude involved with its emotional and psychological connections (there are some steps that sounds scary) and the relentless attempt to harness the cognitive beast in order to give meaning and significance to the action of a dynamic biological system that walks both in space and between bodies. The analytical effort required regarding this complex dynamic system is immense and probably unnecessary from a reductionist point of view, in search of a heavy control mechanism that reaches as far as the measurement of molecules and their electrical charges. The emergence of music from each step rises lightly from the centre of the earth, levitates for the slightest moment in the existence of a tiny glimmer of consciousness in action and then disperses in the roar of the collective use of space. This sound becomes an oppressive, constant and weighty component in the design of space; it becomes indispensable in a practice that is sensitive to the welcoming of heterogeneous public orchestras. It captures the essence of participating, sweeping away the draining legacy of the dichotomous excuses that dampen any form of listening (mind-body, hardware-software, form-matter, function-structure, and so on). The challenge of complexity necessitates a choice.
