little cryptic, I’m talking about English football). It is not the
scales that determine lightness: it is the vital impulse. The
essentials, in all their richness. And here you can include
everything that inspires lightness: I would point out that only
those who are light will probably melt when faced with the
crucible of great decisions, but throughout human history
those who have caused the greatest problems have always
been those who have not known how to be light. Why should
ideologies, categorical imperatives, moral courts, the same
rules for the ox and the lion, wrinkled foreheads, systems
that are wary of exceptions, all these need to demonstrate
that they are serious and harmful in order to hide their
inherent weakness. Do not ever mistake lightness for futility
or inability to cope with the great questions of our existence:
in the end, the true, quintessential lightness is the best way to
demonstrate a greater strength.

nulla che trasformi il piacere del gusto in punizione digestiva.
Aggirare la pesantezza dei dogmi con gli eleganti dribbling di
una mente che spazia a tutto campo.
Le canzoni fatue e raffinate (Bacharach, tanti Beatles, Astrud Gilberto che canta Fly Me to the Moon). Le impertinenze, le
scanzonatezze, le imprudenti feste dei sensi: perché sono le migliori compagne del più intrattabile senso di responsabilità.

la leggerezza: è la spinta vitale. L’essenziale, in tutta la sua ricchezza. E qui metteteci tutto quello che a voi suscita leggerezza:
a me preme evidenziare che chi è soltanto leggero probabilmente si squaglierà quando la palla delle grandi scelte scotta fra le
mani, ma nell’intera storia umana a produrre i guai più grossi è sempre stato chi non sa essere leggero. Perché le ideologie, gli
imperativi categorici, i tribunali morali, le regole uguali per il bue e per il leone, le fronti aggrottate, i sistemi che diffidano
delle eccezioni, tutto questo deve mostrarsi serio e gravoso per nascondere la sua intrinseca debolezza. Non scambiate mai la
leggerezza per futilità o per incapacità di fronteggiare le grandi questioni della nostra esistenza: alla fine, la vera, quintessenziale
leggerezza è il miglior modo di manifestarsi della forza più forte.
