MASTERPLAN - Raphael Viñoli’s masterplan develops around the
Battersea Power Station and includes three pedestrian walkways
that lead to the entrance of this iconic art deco building. The
spectacular Prospect boulevard will house restaurants and
shops on one floor but also an installation and a playground by
Gehry & Partners while the Electric boulevard is on two
levels and will connect a new station on the Underground’s
Northern line to the Power Station entrance. A third boulevard
with luxury hotels and offices will take cars to the monument.
THE DESIGNS - Gehry & Partners designed five buildings
intended for the East side of Electric Boulevard. With
its dynamic volumes seeming almost about to blossom,
the Flower building will house shops and showrooms
but also residential units and a community hub.
Foster+Partners will create a sleek building that will flank
Electric boulevard with hanging gardens devised by the
creators of the HighLine in New York, while James Corner
Field Operations intend to offer a spectacular view over the
Power Station’s white chimneys. The building will be home
to private apartments, retail spaces and a medical centre.
COMMENT – To mark the launching of the district in Milan,
Joanne Skilton, the Battersea Power Station Development
Company Ltd head of leasing and main representative
at the Milan Fiera, said: “The Power Station is unique
because its brand profile is already very strong. We believe
that its combination with the most famous corporate and
retail brands in the world will create a truly world-class
destination and an important addition to London’s fabric”.
