130 TILE TALES Ceramics are no longer used exclusively as coatings for flat surfaces. Thanks to the introduction of thin layers, new hi-tech substrates and new cutting and installation techniques, they have become a material suitable for using to cover three-dimensional objects and furnishings. Often this type of material was used in coatings for outdoor furniture due to its long lasting characteristics over time. Now, however there are numerous experimental applications in the interior home environment. In the bathroom, ceramics represent the best choice for wall cladding because of their excellent resistance and ease of cleaning; for the same reasons they can also now become the main material for creating table tops, furniture and accessories. Unique solutions for new decorative dimensions in any domestic space allow the ultra-thin porcelain stoneware with a thickness of only 3 mm to be easily used in the construction of items of furniture while the white paste itself is also suitable for more daring coatings. The world of ceramics is able to combine the most modern industrial production techniques with the legacy of the Italian craftsman’s culture, and in doing so creates completely personalized solutions while satisfying innovative and creative design choices.
