After 60 years the Compasso d’Oro, the Award for the best in Italian design,
goes international with the first edition dedicated to the theme of Food Design.
The Award, created in Milan in 1954 at the behest of La Rinascente and under
the aegis of Giò Ponti, has always promoted the best in design conceived or
produced in Italy. Of the designer and/or manufacturer, at least one of the two
had to be Italian. This premise has contributed to making the special features
of Italian design recognised worldwide, and over time has strengthened
perception of the Award as one of the most selective and authoritative in
existence. With the opportunity for international visibility offered by Expo it
was considered appropriate to inaugurate the First Edition of the International
Compasso d’Oro by allowing everyone to participate in the competition and
design being part of a large process of cultural growth.
The theme of Expo “Feeding the planet - Energy for Life” offers the opportunity
of investigating how design can interact with production and distribution
systems, providing new products, processes and services for the community.
Then there are two new features: participation is open at an international level
and secondly, there is a specific theme, that of food design.
Naturally there are different categories in which it is possible to participate:
from the creation of innovative products in the various sectors to that of
packaging or communication, from catering processes to territorial and
community development through food culture. Food design does not mean
only the shape of food, it includes all the work applied throughout the creative
and development process wherever there is an innovative and formal
design component. Finally, for young designers from design schools, there is
an important cash prize of 30,000 euros in order to stimulate entry into the
professional world. (Further information and rules can be found on the www.
adi.design.org site).
Closing date for participation is planned for the 30th of April, the day before
the Expo opening with the award ceremony during the exhibition in Milan in
October at the new ADI headquarters. One section of the headquarters, which
is currently undergoing refurbishment, will be used as a temporary exhibition
headquarters and during the Expo will host a calendar of events ADI and other
exhibitions looking at design.
