Elbow Implant Simulator 

My time at BU has been brilliant. Design Engineering has reinforced my natural 

flair for the design of functional items, with the academic knowledge that will 

support me in my future career. 

The Elbow Implant Simulator is a test rig used to load and test, in an anatomic 

way, joint replacement implants for the elbow. It was inspired by my work 

placement at OsteoTec Ltd, Christchurch, where, after graduating, I will work 

as a biomedical engineer. 

Personal Snorkel Device 

The knowledge and technical skills I have gained whilst studying at BU and 

during the year in industry spent with Pall Europe in Portsmouth has greatly 

amplified my desire to work in the engineering industry. 

The Personal Snorkel Device aids and enhances the enjoyment of snorkelling 

for all users. The onboard interface allows the user to manoeuvre through the 

water at a given speed whilst enjoying a view beneath the surface.

Smart Shopping Trolley 

Vacuum Priming System 

I have really enjoyed my time at BU; it has given me key skills I will need 

within a working environment. 

The Smart Shopping Trolley is an innovative way to aid physically challenged 

customers within supermarkets to purchase goods with ease. It is designed 

to move without the need of any physical force, but through a Bluetooth 

connection. 

Studying Aeronautical Engineering prior to my degree has given me the 

passion and drive required to create innovative technology - utilising 

alternative techniques to create new solutions.Throughout my time at BU 

and during my industry placement I have developed and refined the skills of 

a Design Engineer. This has fuelled my ambition and given me, I believe, the 

competitive edge required in this challenging industry. 

Working with a sponsor company – SPP Pumps - on my final project has 

enabled me to further develop my engineering skills in designing a product 

that is fit for their expanding market.

E-Gen Bike 

During my time at Bournemouth University I have discovered a dormant 

childhood curiosity for advanced technologies, and skills which I believe have 

prepared me for a future career in Design and Engineering. 

The E-Gen Bike was heavily influenced by an interest sparked during my 

placement year. It is a conversion kit for any ordinary pedal bike which enables 

the rider to benefit from electric propulsion during times that require extra 

effort, such as the uphill climb! 

FOOT-BOT 

I have enjoyed the time spent at BU. It is where I received a thorough 

engineering background as well as valuable experience through my two 

placement companies, as an AutoCAD Designer/Draughtsperson in England, 

and a Catia v5 Reverse Engineering Designer in China. 

The FOOT-BOT is an EOD robot that is able to relocate and neutralise bombs 

and other life-threatening explosives. The robot is a weapon that will fight 

against terrorism, assuming the role of an inspection/reconnaissance machine 

in various terrain conditions.

X-net Spike Insertion Tool 

I’m a part time student at Bournemouth University with six years experience 

working for a local engineering company. 

The X-net spike insertion tool is a device designed to aid the manufacture of 

one of our products and has been a good vehicle for me to develop the skills 

and knowledge required to become a design engineer. 

HydroScoot 

Having a career for over 15 years as a Design Draughtsman prior to studying 

for my degree, the Design Engineering course at Bournemouth University has 

consolidated and expanded upon my current engineering knowledge. 

The HydroScoot is intended to be a small, light and affordable personal 

watercraft designed to stand apart from the usual ‘jet ski’ styled craft by 

featuring an unusual and desirable element not currently found on 

personal watercraft.

Body Surface Temperature Regulation Garment 

Since I was young I’ve had a personal interest in science fiction and the 

endless possibilities there seemed to be for technological advancement. This 

has developed into an interest in current technological advances. The Body 

Surface Temperature Regulation Garment is focused on the thermal regulation 

of the human body and how this can be supplemented with various modern 

technologies. The garment uses current advances in materials research and 

electronic thermal regulation to try and maintain the surface temperature of 

the user. 

Personal Marine Safety Identification Device 

A Design Engineer at a British Naval Base, a Diver, Diver Medic & 

Decompression Chamber Operator with significant engineering & diving 

industry experience, I returned to University to undertake a degree in Design 

Engineering for personal gratification and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. 

The PMSID is a small, rechargeable, sustainable, automatic, pressure activated, 

torch-like device, which alerts surface recovery personnel of the location of 

divers at the surface awaiting rescue.

Cordless Hammer 

I have enjoyed BU and the challenges my course has presented. It has been a 

great experience! 

The Cordless Hammer is an automated hammer for use in confined spaces. 

Currently, less able people may have trouble using a conventional hammer. The 

design offers a more consistent action, with less movement of the user’s arms. 

It is aimed to expand the customer base via multi use, with no finger injury, 

and can be used by people with limited strength. 

Air Muscle Control & Manipulation System (ACMS) 

My placement at Shadow Robot Company and the course at the BU have 

helped me in acquiring the skills and knowledge to become a young 

confident designer. 

ACMS is an innovative approach to work with Pneumatic Air Muscle Actuators. 

This device used in conjunction with the Pneumatic Air Muscles offers a large 

output force for actuation mechanisms. This cost effective & lightweight 

system offers an alternative to traditional actuation technologies used in 

Robotic applications.

The Concrete Pile Cutter 

The course, along with my placement year at Sunseeker has given me the 

opportunity to learn about and experience production design and engineering, 

which I hope to pursue in my career. 

The Concrete Pile Cutter is designed to break down excess piles on a 

construction site and reduce them to their required height, while separating 

the materials for re-use or recycling. Whilst working on this project and 

throughout my time at BU I have developed my understanding of mechanical, 

material and electrical engineering principles. 

Hybrid Water Generator 

During my time at Bournemouth University I have learnt some valuable skills 

that will serve me well in my chosen career path. 

My final design project idea is basically to harness both the tidal energy and 

wave motion. I thought it would be an innovative way to overcome the loss of 

generation at slack tide.

Ecological Nightlight 

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bournemouth University. By utilising the 

knowledge and skills I have gained from the course, plus having the advantage 

of an excellent work placement, I believe I have the essential skills required for 

a rewarding and successful career in engineering. 

My interest in engineering, especially in environmental and sustainable 

energy issues, has led me to design a child’s night light that uses a wind-up 

mechanism to create the power to light a room when the child is sleeping. 

Automated Tractor Loader System 

I have enjoyed my time at, BU gaining a key understanding in 

Design Engineering. 

The Automated Tractor Loader System is used to assist farmers in coupling and 

uncoupling a tractor loader when it is not required for other farming operations. 

The design automates all of the manual operations that currently have to be 

performed by the operator leaving the tractor. The result is a safer system that 

will help prevent accidents on the farm.

Column Ascending Platform 

The Design Engineering group has formed a great team, providing mutual 

support and sharing of ideas. 

The main driving factor in the design of the Column Ascending Platform was 

that it should attach to a large range of column sizes. For larger columns, the 

arms open out requiring a greater clamping force; this is matched by the spring 

rate. This project combined knowledge gained over the first two years with the 

skills developed over my placement year. 

LSRC Reference Rig 

The project I have undertaken is related to the work I do at BAE Systems. 

The LSRC is a research centre at the Royal School of Signals used to test 

and configure various components related to communication systems. The 

reference rig I have designed is a representative FALCON system. The 

FALCON system is a communication/management system that will be in 

service by the end of 2010. This rig will aid in future upgrades and testing.

Design develop a broad range of skills and 

expertise during their 4 year sandwich 

degree as evidenced by the quality of work 

on display at this year’s design show. 

By employing advanced computer tools to design and 

simulate entire products within a virtual environment 

the students are able to establish design solutions much 

earlier in the product development cycle, solutions that 

are optimised and ready for manufacture while providing 

commercial benefits such as reduced development costs 

and reduced time-to-market.

Illuminated Push-button Switch 

My time at BU and placement at an aerospace design consultancy have helped 

me to develop the skills required to manage the full design process for 

my project. 

Switches in aircraft, boats and tanks are often subject to harsh environments. 

Current switch manufacturers believe that they can supply them at exorbitant 

prices and with long lead times. The product I have developed utilises lean 

manufacturing and assembly techniques to provide a switch superior in 

reliability, size, price and a shorter lead time. 

Flood Resistant Residential Door 

My years at BU have really helped me develop as both a designer and a person. 

The University and its staff have provided me with invaluable sources of 

information and advice to help plan my future career in the industry. 

The Flood Resistant Residential Door was inspired by the summer flooding 

that hit the UK in 2007 and 2008. The damage, cost and distress caused to 

homeowners were forefront in my mind throughout the project development.

Mobile Lifting Truck 

The Mobile Lifting Truck is a versatile amalgamation of a standard sack truck, 

pallet jack, and forklift truck – combining lifting support and manoeuvrability in 

a compact and durable design. It is perfectly suited for the cluttered stockroom 

of an indoor or outdoor warehouse with its sturdy wheelbase and stainless 

steel frame, and can safely lift up to 150kg on the front ramp by the ingenuity 

of a turning screw, which is operated by the vertically mounted electric motor. 

Hi-Jak 

During my time at BU, I have broadened my design skills through the use of 

several software packages and logical research and design disciplines. I have 

also been able to gain valuable work experience in the commercial venue 

refurbishment industry. 

Hi-Jak is a portable, high-lift, hydraulic vehicle jack aimed at mobile mechanics 

and race crew/pit-teams. The main challenge was optimising components 

for minimum mass in order to make the product as portable as possible while 

maintaining appropriate strength and lifting capability.

Assisted Bicycle Carrier 

My placement year was spent at Kesslers International, designing and 

developing Point-of-Sale stands from proposal to fruition, in addition to 

handling the project management and graphical aspects. The experiences 

gained during this year and my time at BU have matured me, both as a 

designer and an individual, and prepared me for the industrial environment. 

The ABC offers car-mounted lifting assistance when securing bicycles to the 

roof of a vehicle. The product aims to reduce the level of exertion required to 

lift bicycles. 

The Descender 

I found my placement year to be my most beneficial at BU, a rewarding work 

experience that let me hone my current skills and learn new ones. 

The Descender is a re-designed sack truck, designed to go up and down stairs 

with the aid of tracks. The new design allows for heavy objects to be carried 

up and down stairs without the user having to bend, injure themselves or be at 

risk of dropping the goods they are carrying.

Easy Access Vehicle Loader 

My time at BU and my year working in the aerospace industry have taught me a 

great deal. I now look forward to starting my career in design and engineering. 

The Easy Access Vehicle Loader is a device specifically targeted at electrical 

stores for the loading and unloading of household items such as fridges and 

dishwashers into cars and vans. The device allows users to transport, raise and 

lower such items quickly and easily. 

RowTrainer 3 

I have found that my time at BU and on my work placement has been 

challenging yet rewarding. The course has given me the chance to develop my 

knowledge and skills which will be invaluable in my professional career ahead. 

The RowTrainer 3 is a rowing tank solution for boat clubs who can’t afford such 

training facilities. The design is unique and provides the rower and trainer a 

solution for perfecting rowing technique on land.

Loft Lift 

After working in the Hydro Industry I returned to university and was able to 

incorporate my work experience into my project with the use of Engineering 

Drawings and Photomontages. 

The Loft Lift is designed to reduce the number of accidents in the household 

that occur on an everyday ladder. By removing the ladder the user can safely 

travel up to the attic without the hassle of having to hold anything 

while climbing. 

Indor 

The inspiration for Indor came from my Placement Year, when I worked for 

fire safety company Fireco. Indor is designed to hold fire doors open and allow 

them to close in the event of a fire. The integration of the product allows the 

door to be supplied with a hold-open device to the end-user removing any need 

for installation. This project has allowed me to further my design skills and 

develop a product I have a passion for.

NOU 

NOU is a frustration-free approach to modern flat pack furniture assembly 

and construction. With the removal of the normal array of fixtures and fixings 

a new method of assembly was required; something simple, cheap, effective 

and suitable for people without the pre-existing knowledge of these tools. The 

materials and construction selected enables smaller local manufacturers to 

produce clean, sustainable products which reduce transport and distribution 

costs. Using these ideals, the first product designed was the NOU table. 

Deep Surface – Space Saving Bed 

My time at BU and on placement with Gaiasphere has given me an 

appreciation for quality design and the skills I need to produce exciting, 

thought provoking products throughout my future career in the 

design industry. 

The Deep Surface Space Saving Bed is intended to encourage people to look at 

how we make use of the spaces around us that we would normally ignore, and 

how we can better use them to improve our standard of living.

Bicycle Anti Lock Brake System 

Studying at BU has given me an invaluable experience and knowledge of 

the design process. During my placement at ITW Delfast, an automotive 

plastics manufacturer, I enhanced my design knowledge of plastics and 

injection moulding. 

The Anti lock Disk brake system for bicycles is aimed at providing a safer 

braking option for inexperienced cyclists. I am looking forward to applying the 

skills I have learnt during placement and university to a career in design. 

Third World Water Decontamination System 

My placement was spent at PPE Ltd, a point of sale display company working 

in their design and visualisation team. In addition to the technical skills learnt, 

my interpersonal and problem-solving skills were developed. 

This product aims to supply drinkable water to the 884 million people across 

the world, whose water is infected by bacteria & viruses. During the design 

process the end user, aid agencies, and benefactor were considered to create 

the final design.

Soda Shot-Gun 

During my work placement, I fulfilled the role of sole CAD Designer with full 

responsibility of the design process in an automotive packaging context. I have 

evolved greatly during my degree, both on the course and socially, and it has 

been an invaluable experience which has filled me with confidence for 

the future. 

The Soda Shot-Gun improves the existing functions of soda guns and adds the 

ability to deliver quick, accurate liquor measures/shots at the touch of a button 

through a single handset. 

Modular Assembly Staircase Unit 

Throughout my time at BU, I have developed a valuable range of skills that 

will aid me in the future industrial environment. Working on placement at SGB 

has also enhanced my technical abilities and given me a great insight into the 

engineering industry. 

The Modular Assembly Staircase Unit is designed for locations needing 

temporary public access with a constant flow of users, such as theatres, 

concert halls and stadiums. The product is easily erectable and individual 

components are of a manageable size. 



Recruiting a Placement Student 

A placement can provide not only the opportunity for an 

undergraduate to put theory into practice, but can also bring the 

company a new perspective and a fresh approach to the business. 

Design students are required to complete a minimum of 40 weeks in a relevant 

placement for their Sandwich degree; however this can be made up of multiple 

shorter placements if necessary. We therefore welcome any opportunities of 

relevant experience for our students, whether short or long placements.

The project work displayed here is the culmination of four

Cleaning Aid 

The three years I have spent at BU studying Product Design have widened my 

knowledge and understanding of the design process, the way products work 

and the interaction of users with their products. This, along with my placement 

year at Illuma, has enabled me to produce usable products. My final year 

product is designed to help people who have problems with movement to clean 

bathrooms and kitchens with ease. 

Zunk – Handheld Toothpaste dispenser 

Zunk is an exciting gadget which puts an element of fun into the daily process 

of brushing your teeth. It is easy to use and efficiently dispenses toothpaste 

directly onto your toothbrush without creating any mess. It is specifically aimed 

at the gifts market. Innovative design is challenging and demanding. The 

past four years studying at BU have given me the skills and appetite to push 

forward into the design industry and become a successful young designer.

Wind-Up – A line winding system for traction kites 

The task of packing away and storing kite lines can be a tedious one; Wind- 

Up is designed to be a tough and durable tool that can be used to improve the 

efficiency of packing away the kite at the end of use. Specifically designed 

for field or beach use, Wind-Up features an innovative method of dispensing, 

packing and storing four, 30-metre kite lines and minimises the occurrence of 

knots and tangles that can hinder the users kiting experience. 

UV Dosimeter 

Skin cancer caused by UV radiation from over-exposure to the sun is becoming

Guitar Training Aid 

The Guitar Training Aid is designed for guitar learners to practise moving 

from one chord to another, following a lighting system on the fretboard. This 

portable product helps the user memorise chords and also builds up finger 

strength. I have enjoyed my time at BU, along with my industrial placement 

with playground company Eibe Play Ltd, where I have developed skills and 

experience, and faced challenges that I feel have prepared me well for my 

future design career. 

Easy Water “Watering with Ease” 

My time at BU and my placement year as a Student Design Engineer at Southco 

have given me a wide range of useful and practical skills. Both have supported 

me with the completion of this final year design project Easy Water. Easy Water 

is an automated greenhouse watering product, which helps the user carry out 

the task of watering their greenhouse unaided. Completing this product has 

enhanced my skills in designing for a different manufacturing technique, which 

shows my ability to adapt.

Re-Flex 

My interest in problem solving and creating realistic solutions has led me to 

follow the path of Product Design. From this, I have been able to apply myself 

effectively during my time at BU. 

My final year project addressed the need to measure the amount of knee flexion 

achieved following a knee replacement operation. The rewarding and enjoyable 

time I spent on placement at Hi-Tech Design Ltd. enabled me to gain a broader 

understanding of design from concept to manufacture. 

HandyCam Board Mount 

The Handy Cam Board Mount is the solution to an industrial brief set by an 

up-and-coming Poole based company, Predator Technology Ltd. The product 

is aimed to allow adaptable mounting of their existing waterproof mini camera 

to any deck surface, whilst tidying excess cable and doubling as a handy cam 

when not in surface mount mode. This project has proved challenging, but 

I feel the brief has been successfully met, and hopefully may provide water 

sports enthusiasts with a new and exciting product.

Terror Lock 

Coming to BU to study design as an unsure individual, I am leaving confident 

in my continually expanding abilities and I look forward to coming challenges 

having completed the Terror Lock. My product is a bicycle seat post that 

contains a method of securing a bicycle to its surroundings; it has been 

designed to reduce theft while also preventing opportunists from stealing the 

bicycle’s saddle. Losing the minimum in height adjustment, the product acts 

like any other seat post. 

Portable Baby Bottle Warmer 

My product is a portable heating unit for the active parent of the 21st century, 

making it possible to warm their child’s feeding bottle wherever they may 

be. The product utilises a combination of low voltage heating elements and 

thermos insulation technology. 

Design has always been a passion of mine, drawing inspiration from the 

environment around me. My time at BU has homed and developed my skills 

and appreciation for this discipline supplying me with a good foundation for

Predator Bicycle Camera Mounts 

The adjustable mounts, developed from a brief set by Predator Technology 

for their existing camera and recording units, are designed to withstand 

demanding terrain, whist maintaining stable, dynamic and exciting footage 

from a multitude of positions and angles. 

My interest in problem solving, combined with experience gained throughout 

my time at BU and a year in industry, has provided the foundations for me to 

apply logical methodologies to create realistic products and design solutions in

ShedGuard 

The ShedGuard is an all-in-one shed lock and alarm system which allows single 

handed operation. It combines a powerful anti-tamper system with a strong

dynamic company was very hands-on and this has helped me to develop a 

well-rounded and practical approach to tackling the design problems I faced

Makeup Artists’ Brush Cleaner 

The Makeup Brush cleaner for professional makeup artists is a portable, messfree 

product that effectively removes unwanted makeup and dirt, without the 

need of a sink, from professional brushes whilst allowing the user flexibility 

and control. My time at BU has provided me with a broad range of practical

Liquid Motion - Portable Shower 

Realising my creative ambition has been an enjoyable experience. 

Two overseas work placements have given me the opportunity to expand my 

design skills and appreciate design on a global scale. I believe the key to good 

product design is innovation; consequently this is a prominent characteristic of 

my work. I now feel prepared and excited about what the future may hold, and 

I hope to continue my career with the same drive, determination and

Paint Pack 

The Paint Pack is a product designed to increase efficiency, accuracy, flexibility 

and comfort when painting Interior and Exterior surfaces. The device is fully 

portable and paint flow can be controlled wirelessly by the user. Mess free and 

self cleaning, overall it improves the painting experience.

Post-Stroke Walking Aid 

The walking aid has been designed for use post-stroke, providing easy onehanded 

operation, folding and braking; utilising a market gap. The design 

evolved from providing a modern spin on Rollator design whilst maintaining 

the structural properties of the framework. I learned a lot from my third 

year placement. Working for an injection moulding company I learned about 

material properties and selection, design for moulding and tool design. I then 

further developed my knowledge of the design and prototyping process 

at WaterRower.

Through a combination of creative thinking, logical methodology and a positive 

placement in the aerospace engineering environment, I have acquired a

Wheelchair Shopping Aid 

The Wheelchair Shopping Aid is a product for use in supermarkets by 

wheelchair-bound customers. The product allows wheelchair users to shop 

independently and with ease. During my time at BU I have faced technical and 

humanistic challenges, allowing me to develop a wide range of skills. The year 

long industrial placement at Craftwood Interiors Ltd gave me an opportunity 

to gain a better understanding of the industry and has re-affirmed my desire to 

work in the design sector. 

iRESPONSE Escape Hood Delivery System 

During my placement year working for Avon Protection Systems, I was directly 

involved in the design and development of the world’s most compact Chemical, 

Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Emergency Escape Hood for the 

United States Government. iRESPONSE is an automated Escape Hood storage 

and delivery system to be used in ‘high-risk’ buildings to secure, hold and 

deliver a supply of Escape Hoods for personnel in the event of a CBRN incident 

or terrorist attack.

Tug-Bug 

Tug-Bug is a bike shopping trailer aimed at the student market. 

The trailer’s quick-release hitch fits most bike types and has no permanent 

fixing on the bike, allowing easy sharing between friends. 

To minimise costs, all shell segments and base halves are identical. 

When not in use, the trailer folds neatly and easily for storage. 

During my work placement at Microlights I redesigned light fittings for retail 

environments. I completed six cost-saving projects which saved the company 

£653,000 a year. 

LiFELiGHT – An Emergency Lifejacket Light 

In a man overboard situation during poor visibility conditions, this emergency 

light aids a victim to attract rescue attention. The LiFELiGHT is an 

automatically activating, flashing light that incorporates an innovative self 

erecting aerial giving superior visibility to that of competing products. 

A built-in battery life indicator offers a cost saving and eco friendly alternative 

to the unnecessary waste current products create. Designed specifically to fit 

150N inflatable lifejackets, the product is also designed to meet SOLAS and 

MED certification.

PlantFlow - Houseplant Watering System 

My time at BU combined with a valuable placement at Celestion has developed 

my skills and understanding of what it takes to be a product designer. 

PlantFlow is a vacation watering solution. Correct frequency of irrigation is not 

a constant feature for houseplants so the modular design of the system and 

range of settings gives more choice to the user. A built-in soil moisture sensor 

ensures correct irrigation to the plants when it is actually needed. 

Kettle for Visually Impaired Users 

I realised the importance of human-centred product design whilst studying at 

NABA, Milan’s academy of fine arts, this summer. Through the use of focus 

groups, I have designed an electric kettle which specifically helps visually 

impaired or blind users when aiming and pouring hot water. I am a fun and

Ash Buster 

The Ash Buster is a hand held vacuum for cleaning in and around a domestic 

fireplace. The product was designed as an accessory for a range of high 

quality wood burning stoves. What makes my product unique is the lack of 

any electrical input – the user powers the vacuum by hand. The Ash Buster is 

designed to simplify the cleaning process, and encourage more home owners to 

use wood burners as a greener method of heating the home. 

Restival - Festival Chair 

Restival is designed to be a cost effective, lightweight, portable chair primarily 

for outdoor festivals. It offer offers comfort and a dry place to sit. A cleverly 

sprung pivoting mechanism allows the user to open and close the shelter to the 

desired angle. Placements at both The Sofa & Chair and Therefore have given 

me a good mix of creativity and technical understanding in industry to support 

my years at BU.

RECYCLEit - The Home Recycling Centre for Your 

Fitted Kitchen 

RECYCLEit aims to aid the user in increasing their recycling whilst saving 

space in their household bin. With a built-in aluminium can crusher and three 

separate areas to sort your rubbish it does this with ease. There are four 

removable bins which can be emptied once full. Designed purely for fitted 

kitchens, the user can apply their own kitchen door to the front, meaning that 

recycle-it will not look out of place in any kitchen. 

SubSee: Underwater Yacht Surveillance 

The SubSee is an underwater pan and tilt camera designed specifically for the 

luxury superyacht market. This product can be used for surveillance, security, 

to assess the need for maintenance without the use of divers, or simply to 

view sea life. The experience I have gained during my time at BU and on my 

placement at Vector Developments, a specialist in thermal imaging technology 

for the superyacht sector, have been an aid in developing my final year product, 

the SubSee.

The choice of project was a result of me being keen to find a solution to a well 

known, yet largely unresolved problem. I have enjoyed the problem-solving 

aspects of the course the most. My placement year has been a real eye-opener 

and has made my experience of the design world so much more real. 

Bag to the Future 

Bag to the Future is an exciting shoulder bag that expands out to become a 

striking shopping trolley. The thinking behind the design is that people are 

sympathetic to the idea of travelling light. With the technical skills I developed 

at Alvan Blanch, mixed with the design of prototypes at K6 Design, I have 

become an adaptable and innovative product designer. The possibilities of 

design are immense and with my creativity and expanding skills I will continue 

to enjoy pushing the boundaries of design and optimising human performance.

Ladder Safety Device 

I was inspired to design a device to aid in setting up and using a ladder 

properly after finding Health and Safety reports targeting the large number 

of accidents caused by ladders. Aimed at the DIY market, this device ensures 

the ladder is not set up at an unsafe angle and allows the user to step down 

in safety. My years at BU have been thoroughly enjoyable, a fantastic place to 

make many friends whilst studying. 

B1 – One Cup Water Boiler 

Design affects every part of our lives, from the layout of the text that we type to 

our interaction with products. It is completely limitless. During my three years 

at BU and a year on placement, I have been able to develop skills and a design 

style that act as a prelude to a career in design. 

B1 is a ‘green’ compact urban living product, capable of boiling and dispensing 

250ml of water in under a minute.

The easyAid 

The easyAid is a device that assists over 65s in washing up all dirty kitchen 

items, such as pots and chopping boards. It does this with the use of 

interchangeable scrubbing heads that oscillate to wash away dried on dirt. I 

feel that my time at BU and placement at Sampson Associates have taught me 

many valuable skills which have helped me to design a product which not only 

undertakes humanistic challenges but incorporates the technological side of 

design as well. 

Eco House – Educational Toy 

This toy teaches children aged 3 – 6 how electrical energy can be produced 

from renewable sources and provides all the energy to power items in the Eco 

House. Solar panels on the roof and a wind-up generator on the side provide 

the power. Furniture plugs in and lights up, rooms are lit by magnetic ‘people’ 

switches and floor panels change colour. The Eco House demonstrates the 

concept of renewable energy in a fun way.

CoolMan is a laptop case designed for young professionals and students which 

provides an angle selectable ergonomic workstation and reduces the risk to 

male infertility. The course, combined with my industrial experience at Eurotek 

Office Furniture, has developed my skills and desire to pursue a successful 

career in design. This intense, but rewarding technical and holistic learning 

approach has developed my confidence as an all-round designer, providing me

KeyPad – Key Security 

The most common way to steal modern cars is to first steal the keys. The 

KeyPad prevents this by providing a secure and unobtrusive location for keys 

in the home. Its soft-open mechanism makes for an efficient, pleasurable user 

interface. The KeyPad exemplifies all aspects of design that excite me. 

A placement year in Hong Kong coupled with a perpetual interest in innovation

The Club Lounger 

Aimed at the high end nightclub market and 5-star hotels, the club lounger 

strikes a balance between sculpture and furniture. It provides a comfortable 

place to sit, ambient low level lighting and a soft warming heat so the user can 

relax and unwind away from all the hustle and bustle and enjoy the night air. 

FishEye – Magnetic Fish Feeder With Webcam 

Automatic fish feeders have a tendency to be unreliable. The FishEye Magnetic 

Feeder provides a complete monitoring system for the user that enables them 

to set an automated feeding pattern, with the added bonus of streaming video 

to monitor feeding, signs of stress or simply just to enjoy their tank whilst away 

from home. 

Incorporating an innovative joining method using high strength magnets, the

Unplugged 

Unplugged is a new product aimed at eliminating the waste of electricity 

through leaving your mobile phone on charge for excessive durations of time. 

The responsibility to balance functionality and style to create believable, 

appealing and manufacturable products to match live briefs was given for 

the duration of my year’s placement at Innovate Design. The variations in 

briefs have enabled me to significantly further my skills using Solidworks, 

Photoworks and Photoshop.

My passion for design really excelled during my placement year at Bluebird 

Engineering where I produced countless drawings for design, manufacture and 

build. From the very start of my time at Bluebird, I needed to be able to transfer

Sharp Vac - The Piano and Keyboard Cleaner 

The Sharp-Vac is a cleaning device designed for the care and upkeep of 

pianos, keyboards and organs. I have used the knowledge I have gained 

during my time at BU and on placement at Airflow to develop an effective and 

aesthetically pleasing design. The course has helped fuel my enthusiasm for 

design and has also rewarded me invaluable experience and skills that I look 

forward to applying and developing more in a future career. 

Aqua Pure RFS - Reverse Osmosis Water Bottle 

My time spent studying at BU has developed my confidence and passion to 

approach problem-solving in a holistic and creative way. The Aqua Pure RFS 

water bottle is a filtration device aimed at travellers on expeditions in rural 

countries where water sources are unreliable. The three stage filter within 

the bottle removes any harmful bacteria and chemicals producing clear safe 

drinking water. The system is advantageous over existing methods as it 

produces clear water with no chemical tastes or odours.

Inspired by my grandfather, my design is similar to a conventional 

wheelbarrow that reduces the physical demands associated with the use of 

the existing product. Gardening is a popular pastime for the elderly and the 

physical changes involved in aging must be addressed by modifications to 

gardening tools. 

The 3wheeler incorporates a balanced structure, multi-directional rear wheels, 

suspension system, lever handbrake and rotational bucket; all of which result 

in a definitive user-friendly, cost-effective and sustainable product. 

National Grid Toolbox 

The years I have spent at BU have been extremely useful in developing the 

skills vital to my future career, and the challenges presented by the design 

course have honed my ability to work under pressure. This toolbox is designed 

for the modern utility industry, and features a folding step, which allows the 

user to reach elevated boilers without the need for additional equipment. This

AutoSense: Automated Toilet Paper Dispenser 

Autosense is designed to reduce unnecessary paper waste and improve 

hygiene in public toilets, using an automated paper feed system. Designed to 

ergonomically dispense approximately three sheets of paper, it is simple to 

operate and refill. I have found my time at BU very challenging yet rewarding, 

learning such a broad range of design skills and gaining valuable industry 

experience on my work placement. I look forward to a future career in

Swift Drop - Adjustable Bike Seatpost 

The Swift Drop mountain bike seatpost provides a lower cost option for riders 

looking to adjust the height of their saddle whilst on the move. Utilising simple 

yet effective technology, the Swift Drop allows the seat to be raised or lowered 

by a push of the handlebar-mounted lever. Riders can now tackle the steepest 

descents and toughest climbs without missing a beat, or breaking the bank!

Desktop One Cup - Water Boiler 

The Desktop One Cup is a compact, stylish product designed for the office 

based professional. It provides the user with a method of storing one cup of 

water, then boiling and dispensing in less than 60 seconds with the push of a 

button, whilst at their desk. 

My time as a maintenance engineer combined with my study at BU has 

provided me with invaluable skills and knowledge to succeed as a 

product designer. 

The EPT, A3 Electric Paper Trimmer 

I have always enjoyed taking things apart to understand how they work so 

design seemed to be a natural career choice for me. The EPT allows the user to 

trim any thickness of A3 paper effortlessly and with great accuracy. 

The EPT incorporates a rugged structure with a sleek contemporary design 

and movements. Studying Product Design at BU has not only allowed me to 

design my product on paper but has allowed me to test and build an actual 

working model. 



Recruiting a Placement Student 

A placement can provide not only the opportunity for an undergraduate to 

put theory into practice, but can also bring the company a new perspective 

and a fresh approach to the business. 

Design students are required to complete a minimum of 40 weeks in a 

relevant placement for their Sandwich degree; however this can be made

Ease 

Ease is a new insulin pen, designed with the aim of reducing the stigma, or 

perceived stigma, attached to injecting in public. In order to achieve this, the 

width, length and height of the device have been reduced (when compared 

to products on the market today), and the overall shape has been altered by 

tapering the device from rear to tip. In addition, the insulin cartridge has been 

hidden within the device in order to reduce the frequency of breakage. 

Beach Pod Design 

Designed to suit surfers and existing users of beach huts, the beach pod is 

a flamboyant design using languid curves and smooth colouring. The living 

space is both held back and flung out to sea by its calm interior and defining 

horizon sights. 

With astutely designed storage underneath the pod, this makes surfboards and 

deckchairs easy to secrete away after use, thus making the pod clean, slick 

and organised.

the application of ergonomic principles and design philosophies, a new era

customer satisfaction.The Modern Ski Gondola is efficient, practical and safe. 

Chameleon is a multi-functional solution to the problems of modest living, 

designed to effectively utilise and compliment the space available within an 

apartment living room. Marketed at young professionals living in minimal 

apartments, the unit saves space without losing aesthetic appeal. 

The seamless form houses a dining table and chairs, as well as a further 

seating bench.

Intercity Transportation System 

In the space of just twenty years, Dubai has turned fantasy into reality by 

transforming from an isolated desert town into a jaw dropping oasis of 

opportunity and success. 

Situated in Dubai’s modern business and residential sector, this transport 

system offers an efficient service to the community and breathtaking 

panoramic views to the cities tourists. Travelling over a gleaming archway 

spanning three kilometres, this system forms a luxury transport solution and 

creates a new icon for an enchanting city. 

BUGI- Utility Buggy 

All parents will know the scenario. A busy day, burdened with the hindrance 

of a buggy in a crowded environment. My concept aims to eliminate all the 

problems that could be encountered on a day-to-day basis, by improving the 

user experience with a utilitarian design. 

The design intends to give parents more flexibility while using a pushchair 

at an affordable price. This buggy aims to draw all the strengths from current 

products while eradicating their weaknesses.

Heathrow Central Bus Station 

Countless complaints regarding the Heathrow Central Bus Station have 

generated the need for a new station. The current CBS needs to excel 

especially in passenger interaction/experience. This final project is all about 

creating new thrilling interior atmospheres for passengers. The design 

considers detailed bus station interior necessities including ticketing office, 

seats, entertainment, and wheelchair access according to bus station 

standards. The conceptual exterior will help characterize the new CBS. This 

design was influenced by the talented Santiago Calatrava and inspired by the 

phases of Cubism. 

Female Sterilisation Medical Instrument 

A key driver for this project was to satisfy the needs of a surgeon and how they 

would interact with a medical device. The surgeon’s performance is improved 

through the consideration and application of ergonomics to the product 

interface. In addition to enhancing the experience of the surgeon, my other 

intention was to create a feeling of positivity for the patient. Colour, shape and 

form have been influenced by the emotional aspects experienced by the 

female patient.

2012 Sailing Observation Centre 

Situated in the middle of the courses for the London 2012 Olympic sailing 

events, the Sailing Observation Centre takes away the need for binoculars 

and brings the spectator up close to the action in a way never seen before. 

Designed with the user in mind, it provides a comfortable and relaxing 

environment without distancing the spectator from any of the exhilaration 

and excitement of the Olympic sailing events. Presenting the future for the 

sailing spectator. 

Crisis Shelter 

At present there are an estimated 640 million people living without adequate 

shelter arising from poverty, war and natural disasters. 

Crisis shelters to date require too much time to set up, leaving those needing 

shelter vulnerable. As such, I strived to design a suitable product with a mind 

to accommodate all the user’s needs for day to day living, whilst trying to 

minimize the time needed to set up a shelter for those affected.

Aggressive PC Games Control System 

Silla 

This product targets serious users of aggressive character PC games. Its 

desktop nature draws the user into a further depth, heightening the perception 

of character reality. Clustering the cognitive and offensive inputs with 

movement and aim respectively, enables each control to embody interaction 

methods that are appropriate and contrasting. Incorporating aggressive 

semiotic features into the aesthetic creates an emotional trigger relating it 

directly to the targeted consumer. This was imperative in the conceptualisation 

and development of this iconic PC gaming product. 

This is an innovative portable media player made to adapt and entertain with 

its dual screen feature consisting with one unique global touch screen. 

High performance wide screen and camera to capture. 

A new portable method to enjoy multiple media feature such as clips, movies, 

camera, video recording, games, music and various much needed portable 

utilities, all with enhancing aesthetic features to make it and worthy successor.

Interactive Bus Shelter for Bournemouth 

The Interactive Bus Shelter has been designed and developed in response to 

the local area. With the concept I have attempted to create a form that captures 

the drama of the sea and questions our perception and logic. The concept is 

also sensitive to seasonal sun paths and variations of colours we see through 

the seasons giving the shelter a life of its own, it will change over time and 

become a catalyst to provide further funding into public transport. 

All Terrain First Response Vehicle 

This project is an idea I have wanted to develop for a while. 

The All Terrain First Response Vehicle is a vehicle that can be used to respond 

to disaster zones as quickly as possible. It is all-too-familiar hearing about 

natural and man-made disaster zones that are cut off from much needed aid 

because vehicles cannot get through. My design will be a means to reach and 

help these people, taking what is needed to where it’s needed fast.

Does the bowler hat conjure up an image of Britishness? There are countless 

selections of icons that spring to mind whenever one hears the word “British”. 

Our proud icons and symbols of yesteryear such as the bulldog have become 

landmarks of our character identity for generations. 

HGV Cabin Design Concept 

Today, we celebrate the birth of a whole new concept of transcontinental HGV 

cabin design, aimed at reducing stress in drivers and optimising the driving 

experience by giving them the most comfortable sitting and resting position; 

a place they can call home while they are on the road. 

The aim is to create a modern, iconic and symbolic object that emulates Britain 

through the form of a suitable furniture item, specifically a chair with the 

intention to capture the public’s imagination and provoking debate. 

The interior is inspired by an aquarium, a surrounding that many will identify 

with as being relaxing and soothing. From the Drive By Wire system and 

24 hours environmental monitoring to the dimmable windscreen, interior 

illumination and HUD dash display, the driver is at the centre of the 

whole design.

Airport Relaxation Zone 

Air travel is regarded as one the most stressful modes of transports used today. 

The fast-paced and busy airport environment can place significant amounts of 

stress both physically and mentally on the human body leading to user fatigue, 

decreased efficiency and potential illness. The aim of this product is to combat 

this by offering travellers a personal escape where they are able to immerse 

themselves, detach from the outside world and enjoy an experience which 

results in them feeling relaxed and revitalized. 

Modular Interactive Greenhouse 

In many of today’s commercially used designs, be it a hand held product or a 

larger project, disability aspects are often overlooked or an afterthought. Many 

products designed for the disabled are often garish and unattractive. 

This modular interactive greenhouse addresses both the functionality and 

aesthetics within design. The modular kit of parts also allows creativity and 

customisation of the interior, resulting in a unique and user defined product.

Underground Station: London 2012 Olympics

Single Seat Car Interior 

My final design project is a car interior for a Subaru Impreza. I have redesigned 

the interior to enhance the driving experience. I feel the current design is 

more focused around practicality and so does not cater well enough for the 

driver. I have chosen a Subaru Impreza as this is a very high performance rally 

car that has been transformed into a road car. My aim is to bring the rally car 

appearance from the outside to the interior.

Tourist Information Centre 

The Olympic Games comes to London in 2012 and tourism in the capital is 

expected to increase considerably. I have designed a tourist information centre 

for the 21st century that combines new technology and interactive activities 

with the traditional elements of a tourist information centre. My time at BU and 

the experience from my work placement at John Cullen Lighting has given me 

a valuable insight in the design industry which I look forward being a part of. 

The Queens Stand 

The Queens stand is famous for horse riding events, including the Derby. My 

design would accentuate the original use as well as adding new purpose and 

widening the audience to add variety. This would provide for a community 

which includes royalty and gypsies alike, by creating a space that can be used 

all year round, including specialist facilities for a disabled riding school. It’s 

been challenging to provide for all audiences but the project has been exciting 

and rewarding.

The Water Tower Spa 

The Water Tower Spa uniquely offers a diverse range of water facilities over 

five floors located in Boscombe. With the area becoming an increasingly 

attractive seaside residential location, the spa offers an ideal place to escape 

from the stresses of life and work. The environment will encourage relaxation, 

rejuvenation and recuperation both physically and psychologically. The 

course has expanded my understanding of the different aspects of design and 

developed my overall creativity. 

The Communication Station 

The Communication Station is a state-of-the-art lounge bar and social 

networking venue which has been inspired by the current popularity of social 

networking websites such as Facebook and Myspace. Opportunities for 

interaction amongst users will rely upon the integration of a variety of digital 

media applications which are embodied within a shared physical environment. 

All visitors will be requested to create a personal profile for display upon the 

venue’s own computer network and messaging service and will have access to 

a variety of additional virtual applications.

Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you 

can use to change the world.” Cooden Cooks aims to educate both adults and 

children of East Sussex about food and nutrition by teaching them how to cook, 

in a bid to aleviate the current obesity crisis. My BU experience has taught me 

a lot. My placement gave me a valuable experience in the industry which was

The Art Hotel 

Based in Bath’s former railway station ‘Green Park’, the Art Hotel aims to 

re-establish Bath’s reputation for cultural richness, whilst helping Bath 

combine both historical attractions and new age design. The Art Hotel design 

has a unique and creative approach, merging a contemporary art gallery and a 

hotel together.

Piccadilly Business Centre 

Forty Six’s prominent location in Piccadilly Circus provided me with the 

opportunity to design a 24 hour, central, high-end business centre aimed at 

delegates seeking a sophisticated yet contemporary venue to hold meetings. 

The combination of flexibility with convenience is offered through its diverse 

meeting rooms, compact accommodation and a fine dining restaurant – all 

under one roof. The invaluable experience gained on my 40 week placement 

at Aukett Tytherleigh (Chelsea,London) provided me with inspiration and 

confidence for my final design. 

Bleak House 

A unique establishment to the area, set within a beautiful Georgian building. 

Bleak House uses its location to distinguish itself from nearby London, adding 

its air of exclusivity. Combining a Michelin Star restaurant with a luxurious

Surfers’ Break, Guernsey 

Responding to the rapid increase in British surfing, I have designed a water 

sports centre and modern hostel on Guernsey’s west coast. ‘Surfers’ Break’ 

aims to compliment Guernsey’s tourism market by offering facilities specifically 

designed for surfers’ needs, within a social and ‘chilled’ atmosphere. The 

combination of my academic studies with the valuable work experience I have 

gained from design firms in California, London and Guernsey has fired my 

enthusiasm to become a dedicated member of a professional design team. 

Innovation Centre 

Traditionally, libraries suffer from an image problem. By installing colourful 

interiors and inspirational design, I aim to transform Waterlooville Library with 

a learning space which kids and adults see as cool, thereby inspiring them to 

read and learn. I intend to design a new, exciting truly public place that will 

cater for all ages. By offering more than just a library, it will be a social resource 

that embraces the culture of our times, regenerating urban spaces and bringing 

excitement back into libraries.

DINE – DRINK – DANCE 

Sheffield is traditionally known for its steel industry, although today many of 

the original industrial buildings are being developed into modern living and 

working spaces for the young affluent professionals of the city. The scene 

has been set for these people to live and work, but where will they play? 

Proposed is a three storey complex entertaining a space to dine, drink and 

dance, all within a former industrial building and with all the glamour and 

sophistication you could imagine. 

Luxury Amputee Rehabilitation House 

I have designed a luxury environment for adults recovering from recent 

amputation. The space allows the accommodation of 5-6 people to stay for the 

duration of 3-4 months with 24 hour care. Facilities such as en-suite bedrooms, 

hydrotherapy pool, gymnasium and communal areas are also offered. 

Amputation can occur for many reasons such as accidents, diabetes and drug 

abuse. I have created an atmosphere for users to adapt, adjust and learn how 

to cope with everyday life.

The Picture Palace 

A love of design and film led me to a 1930s Art Deco cinema in my hometown of 

St Albans. Left derelict for over a decade, this became the perfect opportunity 

to bring it back to life. Influenced by the surreal world of film sets, in particular 

the film 2001: A Space Odyssey and work of art director Ken Adams, the 

Picture Palace is an independent cinema that aims to enhance the escapism of 

the film experience outside the film alone. 

The Overstrand 

The Overstand combines the ideology and reality of surf culture. The venue 

and design will exceed the needs of the intended demographic. The location 

of such a venture is key; the new artificial reef is central to the success 

of the project and thus proximity to The Overstrand is vital. The success 

of The Overstrand will be determined by the combination of surf culture 

complimenting design functionality learnt through my time at BU.

Redevelopment of Bracknell Train Station 

Bracknell is located 25 miles west of London and is ideal for commuters. Its 

strategic location has been recognised and a comprehensive transformation of 

the town centre is underway. The redevelopment of Bracknell Train Station is 

essential in order to support the growth of the existing economic community 

whilst meeting the needs and aspirations of residents and commuters. My 

placement with Astra Office Interiors has been invaluable towards both my 

final year and my future career in the design industry. 

Bridport School of Dance 

Dance is a creative physical activity that stretches our imagination and our 

bodies, contributing to the health of individuals and the whole community. 

The design of Bridport Dance School and the introduction of a vibrant dance

TOBACCO DOCK Sculpture Gallery 

Tobacco Dock is a largely unused building in Wapping. The building’s 

huge scale and strong architectural backdrop is an ideal setting for this 

contemporary sculpture gallery. It also incorporates a glass-fronted sculptor’s 

studio and adjacent events space. This Sculpture Gallery will provide much 

needed regeneration to Wapping both through quality content and design and 

full-integration with the community. Throughout this project I have drawn 

vastly from my professional experience at MCM Architecture, as well as from 

my inspirational time at BU. 

Regenerate, Revive 

This project provides users with easy access to NHS and healthcare facilities 

which may usually be inaccessible to those in full time employment. The 

project aims to rejuvenate the interior to create an “urban oasis” on East 

Croydon’s largest traffic island, currently starved of imagination and design 

influence. My time at BU and on work placement at Bell Associates has been 

an invaluable experience, where I gained great insight into the design process 

where I was involved in every stage from concept to completion.

Youth Music Centre 

Music is a major influence for young people. I have created a space that allows

Power of Art 

A long-lost icon of the Victorian era, Exeter’s old power station was opened in 

1905 and abandoned in 1960. Disused for 50 years, it is a classic construction 

with intricate detail. The concept is to bring life back to the power station in 

the form of an art experience. Art galleries connect communities, past, present 

and future; art is the thread of culture that we can see in all ages 

and communities. 

Drop. Thread. Gorgeous 

Not enough of today’s fashion followers demand the ‘Ethical’ stamp of 

approval. TRAIDremade is a Charity Shop fashion label; unwanted clothes are 

reinvented into one-off ‘must haves’. A year’s experience with Virgile & Stone, 

specialising in Luxury Retail, stressed that it is increasingly harder to grab the 

attention of the high-street shopper. I propose that TRAIDremade combines the 

shop floor with a manufacturing studio, allowing the customer to peek behind 

the scenes and appreciate the process of creating the garment, thus creating 

an innovative eco-shopping experience.

The Retreat 

The Retreat transforms the existing Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park, London, 

originally an Edwardian tea pavilion, to integrate the social qualities of a 

traditional Gentlemen’s club, within the context of an informal and casual 

atmosphere. This eclectic design concept aims to translate and compliment the 

rich architecture of the existing building. The Retreat aims to provide a hub of 

social, casual and relaxing facilities to engage the young male professional and 

to provide a distraction from the stresses he encounters through city life. 

Museum for the Community 

Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire. A modern community based museum, 

displaying the history of the community up to present day, with interaction, 

relaxation, learning and spaces for spending time. The museum interior will be 

themed on the history and original ideas of Letchworth Garden City and the 

surrounding community, with emphasis on the encircling green belt, history in 

the war and the theory of the ‘three magnets’ – Country, City and Country-City.

Network Lifestyle came from all the elements I have experienced during 

my course and was greatly influenced by the placement year in Miami. The 

building became a life force of its own, a world dictated by its users, giving 

once a derelict edifice back to the community. 

Mayfield Station – Graffiti Gallery & Skatepark 

My idea is to use the derelict industrial shell of an Edwardian railway station 

as a backdrop for eccentric art and modern extreme sports. The space is 

aimed towards passionate graffiti artists and the skateboarding community 

– two skills closely related to one another. The gallery and skate park will be 

incorporated to work together rather than separately. My concept creates a 

space that acts as a canvas for artistic expression. The space should inspire 

creativity and spark a union between graffiti artists and art enthusiasts.

An Educational Space to Reduce Youth Crime 

1% of the UK population are adult offenders and 7% of those are male young 

offenders aged between 18 and 20. As learning difficulties, behavioural 

problems and troubled backgrounds in children can cause a rise in youth 

crime, I am showing that if these children are educated correctly, there will 

be less need for young offenders programs and prison spaces as the number 

of offenders will be reduced. This project shows an original space which will 

change the way designers look at educational design. 

Food & Amusement Centre 

This three floor centre is aim to provide a great family experience, giving 

everyone the opportunity to enjoy the diversity and different levels of 

entertainment all in one place. It will hold a wide range of fast food restaurants 

with plenty seating, various forms of social networking activities, like a cybercafe, 

kids interactive playgrounds and an amusement centre with the most 

popular games for kids and adults.

Indoor Water Sports Centre 

The Indoor Water Sports Centre is designed to combine retail and sports, 

enabling consumers the opportunity to buy and test water sports equipment in 

a controllable indoor environment. The centre will offer training and advice in a 

variety of water sports. These sports will include sailing, windsurfing, rowing 

and kayaking. 

The PARC (Public Arts, Audio and Recreation Centre) 

The restructure of a concrete car park into a contemporary arts and installation 

space with the ability to host live and pre-recorded sound performance remains 

at the heart of this project. Play between the exterior and interior of this shell 

structure creates a raw natural tone while sound enriches the connection 

between installation and visitor within this arts centre designed for central 

Camberley, Surrey. A placement with the German based company Huf Haus 

encouraged my professional development, having particularly influenced my 

design presentation skills.

Regular visits to exhibitions run alongside a European visit 

in March and the international textile fair Premiere Vision 

Paris in September. The final major project requires the 

student to produce a six outfit collection to be shown as a 

catwalk collection.

My collection was originally inspired by the cut and silhouette of 18th Century 

fashions. As Vivienne Westwood said: ‘we have to look to the past to create 

the future’. The full silhouette and soft structure are obtained by using gathers 

and ruffles manipulated to achieve a modern day version of the bustle, and 

give the collection a contemporary twist. The monotone cream and black colour 

palette gives a clean platform for the combined prints, which evoke decorative 

period wallpapers. 

A unique and fresh womenswear collection asking to define... 

what is perfection? 

Through exploring this idea visually, my muse lost her identity and became 

a robot-like woman, restricted in her movements. Oversized shapes limit the 

body’s natural motion, with contrasting undergarments that cling to curves. 

New translucent silicone enables you to see this contrast, exposing both layers. 

Metallic finish silver jerseys create a space age feel, but with added flashes of 

bright colour. To finish the garments intricate seaming details create innovative 

surface texture, adding depth to each shape.

A play on the unexpected; experimenting with irregularities and mishaps. 

My collection has a relaxed casual feel with inflated, voluminous silhouettes 

drawn in and gathered with drawstrings or oversized smocking. Using a 

chalky barely there colour palette , and a haphazard range of fabrics gives an 

effortless eclectic feel, layering fabrics and distorting shapes with a new take 

on smocking. 

A voluminous and sexy look inspired by the aesthetic universe and the 

elegance of a Japanese warrior. A functional separates collection for young 

women who want to dress ‘outside the box’. The overall expression is very 

minimalist; to emphasise this I have chosen to use monotones such as white, 

grey and black, highlighted by vibrant peach to give the collection a modern 

edge. Fabrication is an off-beat mix of leather, soft jerseys and techno/ 

performance fabrics with an element of shine.

Abstracted Nature; a fresh take on the intricate detailed patterns found in flora 

and fauna. A mixed separates collection using clean cutting, alongside personal 

textural pieces. New surface decoration interpreting natural forms, with hand 

embroidered techniques. Traditional suitings, leather and lightweight jerseys 

are used alongside hand woven textiles. A natural monotone colour palette of 

black, tan brown and cream, is highlighted by lime green. 

Inspired by geometric shapes and architecture, this womenswear spring/ 

summer collection, combines fluid digitally printed geometric images taken 

from carved stone surfaces with more structured three dimensional cutting. 

A variety of mixed separates and dresses, the colour palette is a vibrant 

combination of vivid red, sun yellow, leaf green, regal purple, cobalt blue 

and orange. Fabrics are a mix of fluid silk satins and cotton sateens, digitally 

printed using manipulated geometric surfaces.

Stylish Attitude: Falling in love with the comfort of sports wear and the old 

techniques of Madeleine Vionnet, this collection is a combination of the two. 

My silhouettes came through experimentation on the stand using soft fabrics, a 

traditional mans shirt and an old romantic dress. The look is sleek with draped 

volume, deep necklines and wrapped collars; colours are girlish red tones, 

raspberry, fuschia and baby pink, offset by ocean blue, silver grey, black 

and lime. 

Traditional versus contemporary; a womenswear Spring/Summer collection 

reinventing traditional tailored shapes as a young classic, but trendy look. Style 

lines are reworked using modern angular cutting lines and engineered around 

the body to emphasise the sharp silhouette. Fabrics are a mix of tailored wools 

and suitings with sheer shirtings used to bring a sleek modern edge for the 

younger market. 

I have used a combination of retro muted browns, turquoise and navy colours 

to stay true to my original research.

Personal textural surface prints developed from snow covered surfaces and

Intrigue is under our skin and within us all. Taking a lead from the gay fetish 

milieu, I have taken inspiration from the enclosed world of gay leather bars, 

an edgy civilised fetishism menswear collection. Dark surface textured and 

laser cut leathers imply a claustrophobic tension to create sensual menswear 

to express the fetishism that lies within us all, from the ordinary man on the 

street to the most extreme personality.

An Autumn/ Winter womenswear collection influenced by the art form that 

is tribal body scarification. The collection comprises of loosely structured 

garments that have an innovative mix of fabrics, combining leather, silk jersey 

and natural wools. The use of chunky cording and seaming exaggerates and 

traces the lines of scarification across and around the body. This incorporated 

with a decadent use of fabric manipulation, which twists and unravels to reveal 

the story behind the unseen beauty of a scar.

Quirky and sophisticated with sharp tailoring and strong lines. This collection 

has a retro feel which is echoed in the print and off beat colour palette of ocean 

blue, aqua, blue smoke, tan, jade and tangerine. Geometric shapes are used 

to give volume and depth, whilst the layering of contrasting flannel suitings, 

leather, cottons and performance fabrics gives an ultra modern feel. 

The collection has been produced using carefully sourced fabrics from pre and 

post consumer waste. 

A challenge to order, this collection aspires to catch the eye and make 

its audience curious. As in a gallery where six different works of art are 

juxtaposed alongside each other, you are drawn and attracted to look further. 

Sophisticated intricate cutting with haphazard details, fabrication is fresh 

using blue tones, and metallics, mixed with eclectic bright and monotone, hand 

drawn digital prints. The range caters for young women who dress classically, 

but are fascinated by colour and the edgy street environment.

Hand drawn observational images of Islamic architecture mirror and twist 

to create a range of Fornasetti styled personal prints. The clean black and 

white palette allows for a range of smooth and satinised surfaces within the 

fabrication, to reflect the complex and almost abstract patterns, created by the 

manipulation and repetition of the architectural images. Style lines are simple 

yet innovative, achieved by allowing the manipulation of the printed images 

around the body to direct the cut and fit. 

A comment on our human vulnerability: a mix of truth and façade, the role of 

composure versus protection. The key silhouette is top heavy with soft flowing, 

capacious shapes. Core fabrics are transparent layered sheers, in a range of 

flesh tones and moody greys. Contrast comes from blending working denims 

and leather with faintly printed chiffons. 

Dada influence is focal to the embellishment, incorporating traditional 

haberdashery to surface decoration in an unanticipated manner.

A simple oversized silhouette, created from the deconstruction and 

reorganisation of a man’s tailored jacket, each garment moving organically 

to the next. The enlarged and plagiarised elements, from the lapels down to 

the lining and stitch detailing, add character to the collection,looking from the 

inside out, expanding on the comical misuse of the suit as displayed by Charlie 

Chaplin. Subtle differences in the colour palette of blues: midnight, navy and 

black, play amongst a fabrication of traditional suiting and linings. 

Based around architecture and the innovative buildings of contemporary 

designers, this range takes influence from the form and shapes these striking 

structures create. 

I have used an asymmetric silhouette to accentuate the shape of the female 

body. A mixture of angular and curved style lines combine with body sculpting. 

The gentle palette of black, white, purple and silver greys, offers boldness to 

the collection; a balance of light delicate feminine touches achieved through 

the use of personal floral and textured leaf prints.

A young collection, originally inspired by the new pop surrealism echoed in 

the films of Tim Burton and artwork of Marc Ryden; mixed with ideas gained 

through experimentation on the stand. Fabric manipulation exaggerates a 

confident and powerful yet soft femininity, to emphasise the unselfconscious 

sexuality of a young woman. The colouration, a combination of classic black 

and white with clashing vibrant pink and yellow, portrays the innocent 

seductiveness of the girl/woman. 

The conflict of confusion and denial lurk; a collection telling the story of an 

outwardly confident woman protecting her vulnerable side. Initial research was 

into my own feelings and emotions at a crossing point in my life. Structured 

and exaggerated shapes wrap and surround the body, but inside is freedom. 

Dark muted colours reflect and extend a sombre claustrophobic mood. 

Fabrication is structured with a rough edge to the surface finish. She prefers to 

stay in the shadows …

A summer visit to my homeland, Peru, fired research into the rich legacy of the 

Inca tribe. Inspired by historical artefacts and Incan patterns, my collection 

is filled with layers of mystery, hidden prints and shapes juxtaposed to relate 

to their vibrant love of creation and life. Colour is a rich mixture of purples, 

reds, browns and greens, with vibrant flashes to give a lively playful look. 

Hand embellishment nets clash with vibrant prints in a mix of traditional and 

performance fabrics. 

My collection takes inspiration from origami, corrugation and tessellation 

patterns. Initial experimentation on the stand using paper, employed folding 

and stiffening techniques to hold the form, ideas later translated into softer 

jersey fabrics. The silhouettes focus on the exaggeration of the female form 

with an emphasis on the waist line. The colour palette is clean, contrasting 

block muted brights used to accentuate the shadow and light planes caused by 

the deliberate folds and tucks. 

Structured crisp separates contrast with soft shapes in traditional shirtings 

and jerseys.

graphic designer, my major project focuses on new packaging concepts, a

Sustainable Fashion Concept 

Mainstream Fashion is wasteful, having no purpose except to induce change. 

My major project focuses on a complete visual identity, advertising and a 

sustainable business model for an alternative, ethically sound, charity clothes 

shop concept aimed at young mainstream consumers. Unwanted clothing, 

vintage materials and fabrics are reused or redesigned and reformed into 

unique one-off garments, to the full extent of their lifespan. I look forward to 

incorporating sustainable values into all aspects of my future design work. 

‘Green is the New Black’ – An Awareness Campaign 

In a world where plastic is rapidly becoming the enemy and green is the new 

black, it is important that the youth of today are encouraged to embrace 

environmentally aware behavior and habits. My major project focuses on an 

‘awareness’ group, campaign and event to connect young people with arising 

plastic issues we are now facing, whilst combining fun, creativity, competition 

and learning. I believe ‘sustainability’ should be incorporated in all my design 

work in the future.

Studies of surface wear 

mechanisms and integration of 

sustainable development issues 

within advanced in engineering

the underlying principles of 

this Research Centre. Issues of 

tribology (friction, wear and 

lubrication) are studied to help 

understand their influence on 

product durability and energy 

consumption. 

The activities of this theme 

include three areas: Tribology and 

Environmental Design; Ceramics

extensive experimental facilities 

to assess wear mechanisms of 

rolling and sliding contacts. This 

includes a rotary tribometer, a 

micro-frication machine and a 

scanning surface microscope. We
