Design and innovation lie at the heart 

of successful business growth and 

wealth creation. The Festival is where 

Higher Education meets business and 

industry, providing a showcase for our 

students’ final year project work. 

We are proud of our students’ 

achievements, and hope that you 

too will be impressed by the high 

standard of their work and the novelty 

of many of the concepts, detailed 

designs and simulations. We take 

great pride in the quality of project 

work and the ability of our students 

to employ technology appropriately 

and effectively in the design of quality 

marketable projects. 

Advances in technology, while 

bringing about opportunities for 

young designers, also provide 

challenges; appropriate use of 

the technology, respect for the 

environment, consideration of the 

finite resources, among other issues. 

The design projects you will see here 

take up this challenge. 

We have built our excellent reputation 

for design over many years and focus 

on what has been described as Total 

Design – which embodies market 

needs, function and importantly style.

The Centre for Research and Knowledge Transfer provides a 

comprehensive support service to Bournemouth University students, 

graduates and staff who wish to commercialise their ideas. We have a 

track record of successfully bringing products to market and maintain 

close links with a number of international businesses who have licence

Foreword 

Over four years, the Design Engineering 

students develop their flair, creativity and 

market perception necessary for the design 

of successful products and equipment.

They use the latest solid modelling, rendering and product 

simulation tools to model and evaluate their designs, 

which are supported by an in-depth understanding of 

engineering principles. The students also acquire the 

ability to employ modern technologies, such as rapid 

prototyping, that reduces both product development time 

and cost. The fruits of their hard work is on display for 

everyone to see and wonder.

components for this project, and the experience from my two placement years

Prior to my degree, I worked as an engineering fitter which secured my interest

Studying at BU has enabled me to gain various skills that will help me

I am a young designer about to turn up the temperature on the market with 

an innovative new energy-saving kettle. The Once Kettle is the first and only 

thermos kettle on the market. Mix its market leading potential with world class

HydroHeel Yacht Stability System 

During my placement at Princess Motor Yachts I was heavily involved in the 

design of engineering components for the V85 Sports Yacht. This valuable 

industrial experience has given me a solid grounding in design and I have 

sought to build upon this experience with the Hydroheel product. Hydroheel 

is designed to shift sea water transversely across a vessel deck. It therefore 

enables a yacht stability test to be performed in a faster, safer and more costeffective 

manner.

Cool Fire – Innovative Flame Effect 

I have chosen a career in Design Engineering, as it combines my preferred 

disciplines of Art and Science. Driven by my ambition to build a successful 

career, I have gained work experience in organisations ranging from an 

Architect’s practice to a global steel manufacturer. I believe that this has 

prepared me for either a key role in industry or to study for a postgraduate 

qualification.

Kitchen Thermatap 

My product is an energy-efficient, water-saving tap system for the kitchen. It 

enables the user to specify what temperature water they require and delivers 

it near instantly, eliminating the need to run the tap. I thoroughly enjoyed 

my time at BU, both academically and socially. I have come away with a vast 

knowledge of design engineering, through both the course and my placement 

at Kesslers Int.

Alternatively Powered Emergency Locator Beacon 

(APELB) 

This Alternatively Powered Emergency Locator Beacon is used to assist in both 

land and sea rescue. This product uses solar, wave and human power to charge 

and support a reachable battery therefore making it a completely sustainable 

product. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at BU, gaining a key understanding 

in Design Engineering.

Automatic Window Cleaner 

I worked for FEA-Solutions in my placement year, where I gained advanced 

knowledge of CAD modelling and a wide range of FEA analysis for various 

product designs. The past four years at BU have been brilliant and I fully

course will certainly benefit me in years to come.

Gmax Chord Master 

I have learnt a lot during my time at BU, and have had the opportunity to 

improve my skills in many areas. The Gmax Chord Master is a teaching aid for 

guitarists. It uses ultrasonic ranging to detect chords being played. I chose this 

particular project as I have a huge interest in music and wanted to bring this to 

the course.

Temperature Controlled Induction Kit 

My product electronically controls the intake air temperature entering an 

automotive engine. It can increase engine performance or increase fuel 

economy. The design improves airflow and reduces heat transfer. From my 

time at BU, I’ve broadened my skills and overcome many challenges. I feel the 

course has set me on the right path to a successful engineering career.

Recumbent E-bike Conversion Kit 

My Conversion Kit has been designed to exceed current electric bicycle 

performance by capturing kinetic energy through freewheeling and 

regenerative braking, making it a more practical transport solution. After 

graduation I hope to begin a career in aviation and I strongly believe that the 

wide range of skills I have learned on the course will aid me greatly in my 

chosen profession.

The Manual Release Cargo Hook 

This project is designed to replace an existing hook system on the V22 Osprey. 

The device works by taking a tensile pull on a steel cable. This shifts a release 

sleeve and allows a set of load bearing claws to pivot about a pin releasing the 

load. The hook has a SWL of 11.3t with a safety factor of 4.3:1.

For my final year project I have decided to design a moisture sensitive water 

sprinkler, which will have a main aim to conserve water, while still maintaining 

an ideal soil moisture level. I’ve found this final year project has helped me to

Energy Reclamation System 

I’m a driven, blue-skies-thinking sort of person. I have a lot of enthusiasm for

Proof of Concept for an Energy Reclamation System, using Thermal Expansion 

and Piezoelectrics. For my placement I was a Project Engineer, developing 

machines for Biodeisel Production.

My interest in mechanical design began in childhood and I have enjoyed my

Easi Wrench 

I’ve gained a lot from my time at BU, both personally and academically. On 

my placement at MERU, a charity which designs and manufactures bespoke 

products to improve the life of children with severe disabilities, I was able to

The Sustainable Bicycle Light 

The Sustainable Bicycle Light incorporates two solar cells and combats 

all problems associated with existing bicycle lighting, while remaining 

competitively priced and producing minimal environmental impact. My 

placement provided an opportunity to implement the theoretical knowledge 

I gained during my degree and practical experience gained during my 

apprenticeship.

My passion for design led me to university, giving me many valuable skills. 

My placement year at DEK gave industrial experience of mechanical design,

leading edge of solar cell printing equipment.

BodyTech Electro-Magnetic Bench Press 

My product utilises the properties of electromagnets to provide the resistance 

required for the bench press. I decided to study here while working for BU 

as an Electronics Technician, to enable me to further develop my skills as an 

engineer. My degree, combined with my electronics qualifications, has given 

me the knowledge to continue a successful career in engineering.

are able to establish optimised design solutions much

The Kapper 

The Kapper is a handheld device which aids medical laboratory workers in the 

process of sealing test tubes after analysis. The device helps reduce workrelated 

injuries caused by exertion and repetition, and decrease the time taken 

by the manual process. The experiences I have gained at BU and during my 

placement at Kesslers International in London have helped me develop into a 

well-rounded designer and furthered my passion for design.

United Brushing 

When travelling for business or pleasure, people often forget to take toiletries 

with them. United Brushing brings the convenience of an electric toothbrush 

and toothpaste together. The watertight design enables the user to apply 

toothpaste from the lid and after use store comfortably anywhere from your 

pocket to your laptop case. I’ve treasured the experiences and knowledge 

gained over the three years at BU and on industrial placement at Dyson Ltd. I 

can now pursue this into an exciting career in design.

Fournos Shelving 

The Fournos Shelving system provides fully automatic shelf positioning for 

whatever you happen to be cooking. Sturdy, strong and fully extendable, it’s 

now easier and safer to remove and place items into an oven. Three years 

at BU and a full-time placement based at Visteon, France has given me a 

strong ability for conceptual knowledge, sound methodology and a structured 

approach to product design.

Children’s Water Cooler 

My product, a water cooler for children, is designed to encourage and promote 

the use of drinking healthy filtered water, and tackle the issue of unhealthy 

young children. After completing an 18-month placement as a design engineer 

at Brownell Ltd in London, I gained the experience necessary to develop and 

enhance my design skills. I have enjoyed my time at BU and look forward to 

realising my ambitions and pursuing a career within the design industry.

Ventus Turbine 

The Ventus Turbine is a new era in portable, personal power generation. Fully 

breaking down to fit into a car boot, Ventus Turbine charges 12v batteries from 

wind power allowing the user to power a whole range of appliances. My time 

here at BU has been an exceptionally rewarding experience. The three years 

at university, together with my placement at Visteon UK, has supplied me with 

the necessary knowledge and conviction to continue my career as a designer.

The Console Caddy 

The Console Caddy is an accessory storage unit aimed at the home 

entertainment industry. CDs and DVDs have become integrated in many 

aspects of personal enjoyment, and maintenance of such media is an area that 

has seen little development to present – until now. My experiences while at BU 

have helped me to realise my potential and learn the valued skills needed to be 

a top-tier designer.

Self Propelled Rising Wheelchair 

The Self Propelled Rising Wheelchair is capable of lifting its user quickly and 

safely to an upright position. An easy and controlled method of standing 

is achieved via a simple manual seat raising feature. A combination of my 

academic studies and a highly rewarding industrial placement at Dyson Ltd 

has enabled me to develop as a confident, all round designer. I now look 

forward to enhancing my skills further and pursuing a career in the 

design industry.

Garden Environment 

For my final year project, I designed a heat capture structure to be used with 

patio heaters to improve efficiency and lessen their impact on the environment. 

On placement I worked as a junior creative designer. After graduation, I plan 

to pursue my design career in London with the aim of continually learning new 

skills in the world of creative design.

Tidal Energy System 

The Tidal Energy System is designed to fix onto marinas to generate electricity 

from the tidal current. The generated electricity is then used to power LED 

navigational and emergency lighting on pontoon decking. I will leave BU with 

the ambition and confidence that I can succeed in the competitive industry of 

design. Having developed both my creative and technical skills through my 

studies and year in placement, I feel equipped to tackle all future 

design challenges.

The Roadside Assistant 

The Roadside Assistant aids in changing the wheel of a compact car. It is a 

rechargeable tool designed to attach onto a scissor jack lifting the car to its 

necessary height and to quickly and easily take on and off the wheel nuts. 

My time at BU has been an amazing experience that I will always remember 

and treasure.

Medic Minder 

Medic Minder is a medication dispenser for those that take medication on 

a regular basis, who have limited mobility in their hands due to conditions 

such as Parkinson’s and Arthritis. Medic Minder’s primary function is to aid 

the dispensing of tablets in order to provide greater ease and accessibility 

when taking medication. My time at BU has been an exciting and valuable 

experience, and the course has enabled me to explore and develop my 

understanding of design.

SeaStar X1 Underwater Propulsion Vehicle 

The SeaStar X1 is an affordable underwater vehicle that provides features to 

make it a safer option than competing products. Incorporating a variable depth 

limiter, protective casing, intuitive user interaction, new ‘smart’ materials, and 

a distinctive appearance, this product is both effective and unique. I have very 

much enjoyed my chance to be creative on the CAPD course and on placement 

at RaPro Emulations. I am now looking forward to applying my knowledge and 

ideas in a commercial environment.

Double Cycling 

As people get older their muscles get weaker and weaker. Double Cycling 

is a product which can be used to improve weak muscles without damaging 

their joints and it can also be used by people who want to burn fat quickly 

and easily. Studying at BU has been a great opportunity for me to develop and 

achieve different skills and knowledge in design.

LUG Turbine 

My product is designed to work on the London Underground; by harnessing 

wind from passing trains in the tunnels it generates electricity. This will then 

be stored in batteries and used with external power sources. Throughout 

my time at BU, I have learnt so many different skills that will be useful in a 

professional environment. Working on my placement at Westinghouse Ltd put 

these to use and gave me a sense of what is still to come in my future career.

Sanctuary 

Sanctuary is a three-wheeled covered bicycle, designed for commuting around 

town. It creates a dry sheltered environment due to its ride height and its 

prominence on the road provides the user with confidence. A small amount of 

luggage may be carried creating a great alternative to automobiles. During my 

years at BU and placement, I have learnt and implemented many important 

design skills that will aid me in the future, and has encouraged me to succeed 

in future challenges.

The Tennis Ball Mower aids the collection of 100 tennis balls, saving valuable 

time for tennis players and coaches. Use of the mower will prevent the 

straining of players’ back muscles as they often don’t bend at the knees 

correctly when picking up every tennis ball. The Mower will be available on 

the courts of elite tennis clubs for their members to utilise. The detachable ball 

container enables several courts to make use of one mower as players can use 

separate containers.

Electric Outboard Engine 

For my final year project, I designed a new electric outboard engine for small 

boats, resulting in the smallest and lightest engine available in the world today. 

As a mature student returning to Higher Education, I have found my time at BU 

to be highly challenging and rewarding. I’m now looking forward to entering a 

new and exciting career choice in the marine design industry.

Folding Caravan 

My time at BU, together with a year working at ASK Innovation, has been a 

very beneficial and enjoyable experience. Working on projects from the idea 

stages right through to packaged products has made me a more focused 

designer. It has developed my skills, introducing the knowledge and practices 

which have added a manufacturing emphasis with suitable constraints into the 

earlier design stages, without compromising any creativity and innovation in 

my conceptual designs.

The Working School Chair 

The Working School Chair is a new and affordable chair for use in 

secondary schools. The chair works actively with the user to adjust to 

sitting requirements. The chair can not be rocked or slouched in which will 

significantly reduce the amount of casualties suffered by school children, 

a massive 7,000 as a result of chair related incidents last year. CAPD has 

encouraged me to improve my skills and knowledge.

This is a holistic broad-based four-year sandwich 

course that focuses on creativity, analysis and technical 

understanding. The students use a real understanding 

of fundamentals, prototype manufacture and computer 

modelling to launch themselves into productive careers. 

Each student has identified a specific problem and 

produced a design that satisfies the need in terms 

of price, customer, function and suitability for 

industry manufacture.

The Compact Bike Lock 

Design has always been my interest – when I was young I was always taking 

things apart to see how they worked. My dedication to design has remained 

and after working at a Design Engineering Company, I was able to incorporate 

my work experience into my project, the Compact Bike Lock. As a keen cyclist 

I am aware of the importance of bicycle theft and security, and set out to design 

a lock that was not only secure but convenient to carry on the bike.

Flat Pak-it 

I’ve always had a passion for design, and studying PD has shown me the depth 

of skills required. I’m eager to make use of these skills in future environments. 

Flat-pack furniture has ever increasing sales and yet assembly isn’t particularly 

easy. Flat Pak-it helps users assemble flat pack furniture quickly and easily, 

meaning less time assembling and more time using!

This child’s toy is aimed specifically at improving the hand-eye co-ordination of 

children aged 1-3. Centred on the use of balls, the Roll-Around Playground has 

features that require the child to react to a different challenge each time they

activity and a unique ball chasing game, amongst others.

High Access Head Protector 

This product is designed for use specifically by those trades working at 

height. Through previous experience I have gained a good insight into the 

requirements for this work environment and understand the restrictions of 

current head protection available. By having a lower profile, four-point chin 

strap anchorage and a reduced peak for better visibility the user is left with 

a greater all round spatial awareness. The technical challenge of this product 

was designing it within the European Standard (EN397).

Iris began as a statement of a market need and commercial vision, to update

The Hydro-Solar Filter utilises solar energy to remove dirt and bacteria from

equations to calculate heat transfer, stresses and parabolic intensity. To

rigs were built. The Hydro-Solar Filter proves that solar energy should be

Lumino: The Dynamo dog lead with in-built torch 

This innovative retractable dog lead features a dynamo, which utilises the lead 

coiling mechanism to continuously recharge batteries, powering the inbuilt 

torch. Dog walkers can be safe in the knowledge that they will never be left 

in the dark again. Lumino demanded extensive exploration of design related

On-Q: Disposable barbeque stand 

Barbeques are often an evening affair and normally it gets too dark to control

Fort Regent is an ideal location for a skate centre. It has previously been used 

for many different types of extreme activities, since there is a high demand for 

a skate park by both the youths of Jersey and members of CISA. I’ve designed 

a safe, urban area for all ages from beginners to professionals, skaters to freerunners 

& BMX riders. The difference in this skate park will be its innovative 

design, which will incorporate all different eras of skating. Among the many

Razzle Dazzle 

My inspiration was dazzle camouflage, a paint scheme used on ships, 

mainly during WWI. It consisted of a complex pattern of geometric shapes in

that I have chosen is black, white and tan. Fabrics are heavy cottons and 

leather in a playful mixture of stripes, spots and checks.

The concept of my collection is to create an essence of structured architecture.

shirt be a formal garment? Each piece is based on an existing garment, passed 

through a design filter to result in a quirky retake. Personal op art textiles bring 

the style to a tip, complete with small chic caps and sharp white brogues.

Tie Up The Volume 

An exploration of the ancient art of Japanese rope bondage which culminates 

in a marriage of over the top volume to playful proportions, held together by 

silk rope. A bright and vivid colour story makes an interesting contrast to the 

dark nature of the theme, peacock blue and bubblegum pink are toned down 

with occasional flashes of elephant grey. The fabric story is made up of luxury 

Venetian wool’s, nude organza, silky satin and sexy leather.

La Dolce Vita 

Inspired by the Italian flourishing 1950s, my collection takes us back in time, 

through the alleys of Rome, where woman’s femininity explodes, in form of 

joy, freedom and light-heartedness. A game of gathers and curves enhances 

a voluptuous silhouette, the micro fibre fabrics are kept plain and simple not 

to distract the eye from the shape, and the subtle tones reflect the innate 

elegance of that period.

Geek Geometrics 

Imagine something abstract yet clean-cut, structured, sophisticated and 

chic. The garments spill with character and envelope into architectural folds 

and pleats. Bold graphic prints lie among sheer and see through fabrics. The 

silhouette, refined shapes, layers and bound edges create a geeky, oversized, 

yet modernistic look.

Re-inventing the Past 

Reminiscent of the 1800s, with a modern twist, this women’s wear collection, 

reinvents past silhouettes. Using Photoshop, traditional William Morris floral 

prints are mixed with modern day symbols to create unique surface decoration 

for a street wear collection. My colour palette is unpredictable contrasted 

muted brights, which reflect today’s urban lifestyle.

Blue Velvet 

My collection is inspired and influenced by John Galliano’s dramatic stamp 

on the fashion industry, not only the flamboyant designs of his outfits but also 

the vivid makeup of his models. The textile technique I have used to re-invent 

velvet was discovered during my textile innovation project. The colour palette 

uses affluent shades of ruby, bottle green, and midnight blue as luxurious 

surface manipulated, self-interpreted velvets.

Calculated Curves 

This collection seeks to combine two extreme body shapes past and present, 

transforming the current ‘boyish’, ‘heroin’ look to achieve an innovative 

exaggerated hourglass silhouette. The use of silicone breast forms and hip and 

buttock pads technically encased within an array of 1950s-influenced garments 

achieve a natural, yet dramatic, shape.

I have created a fresh, young womenswear collection. The garments are

dubstep rave. Not just standard sportswear but subtle, unique garments with 

innovative textile prints and appliqué detail. Fresh, edgy and sexy.

Urban & Rural Intertwine 

This collection is a new and exiting mixture of the contrasting shapes and lines 

found in Urban and Rural settings. It features the harsh lines and structure 

of urban settlements mixed with the volume of foliage and the soft flowing 

shapes of the countryside. The colour palette is modern and vibrant, featuring 

colours such as purple and silvery greys.
