The Festival of Design & Innovation 2008
Spirit of design, freedom of thought
www.bournemouth.ac.uk/festival

Professor John Vinney PhD BEng (Hons) CEng FIMechE
Dean, School of Design, Engineering & Computing
Welcome to the 16th annual
Festival of Design & Innovation at BU
Design and innovation lie at the heart
of successful business growth and
wealth creation. The Festival is where
Higher Education meets business and
industry, providing a showcase for our
students’ final year project work.
We are proud of our students’
achievements, and hope that you
too will be impressed by the high
standard of their work and the novelty
of many of the concepts, detailed
designs and simulations. We take
great pride in the quality of project
work and the ability of our students
to employ technology appropriately
and effectively in the design of quality
marketable projects.
Advances in technology, while
bringing about opportunities for
young designers, also provide
challenges; appropriate use of
the technology, respect for the
environment, consideration of the
finite resources, among other issues.
The design projects you will see here
take up this challenge.
We have built our excellent reputation
for design over many years and focus
on what has been described as Total
Design – which embodies market
needs, function and importantly style.
The designs that you will see on
display will reflect this philosophy.
On behalf of our students and staff
I would like to take this opportunity
to thank everyone who has sponsored
and supported our students in their
project work.
Products available for license
The Centre for Research and Knowledge Transfer provides a
comprehensive support service to Bournemouth University students,
graduates and staff who wish to commercialise their ideas. We have a
track record of successfully bringing products to market and maintain
close links with a number of international businesses who have licence
agreements to manufacture our designs. If you have enjoyed the exhibition
of design projects at this year’s Festival, you may be interested to know
that a number of designs are available for license through our department.
BSc (Hons)
Design Engineering
Foreword
Over four years, the Design Engineering
students develop their flair, creativity and
market perception necessary for the design
of successful products and equipment.
Dr Mehran
Koohgilani
Course Leader
They use the latest solid modelling, rendering and product
simulation tools to model and evaluate their designs,
which are supported by an in-depth understanding of
engineering principles. The students also acquire the
ability to employ modern technologies, such as rapid
prototyping, that reduces both product development time
and cost. The fruits of their hard work is on display for
everyone to see and wonder.
HydroHeel Yacht Stability System
During my placement at Princess Motor Yachts I was heavily involved in the
design of engineering components for the V85 Sports Yacht. This valuable
industrial experience has given me a solid grounding in design and I have
sought to build upon this experience with the Hydroheel product. Hydroheel
enables a yacht stability test to be performed in a faster, safer and more costeffective
manner.
My product is designed to work on the London Underground; by harnessing
A Wine Tasting Experience
By designing a wine tasting experience I want to bring together wine and
design, which will help people to celebrate the taste of English wines and
invigorate all of their other senses sight, smell touch and sound. I’ve thoroughly
enjoyed both my course at BU, and my placement with Sampson Associates.
I have learnt so much in the last four years, and my passion for design
Urban Eden
The practical approach this degree offered has furthered my passion and
ambitions for design. Commuting to a placement specialising in office design
provided insight into the lack of facilities available to alleviate the stress of a
commuter’s lifestyle. My project attempts to find a practical solution to this
ever increasing issue; utilising various facilities, focusing on encouraging users
to take time out from the office. Its key aspect is an indoor park, which enables
users to escape to a relaxed tranquil, environment.
management and technical tools,
and are able to spearhead and
manage the development of new
products and engineering projects.
MSc Sustainable Product Design
explores a key issue within product
design. Awareness, understanding
and integration of sustainable
development issues within the
design process are the underlying
themes of this course.
MA Product Design Management
focuses on the management of
design. The subject area covers
product development at both ends,
from initial brief and research,
through to manufacture.
MSc Rapid Product Development
provides in-depth knowledge
and understanding of modern
product design and development
methods. It also covers the use
of modern technologies such as
computer aided design, computer
aided engineering, design and
manufacturing simulation,
rapid prototyping and rapid
manufacturing.
MSc Product Design Innovation
provides an overview of
current technologies and tools
for effectively implementing
technology in design to prove and
realise a product independently.
The enabling power of technology
is employed in the product design
process to reduce the number of
