FoDI Steering Group Meeting – 02/04/08
Attendees – Tania Humphries, Rodger Page, Helen Stickland, Xavier Velay,
Emma Bennett, Kamran Tabeshfar, Norman Stock
Website
On 1 April the FoDI site went live, and has so far received excellent feedback.
Rodger presented the website to the meeting and talked through its various
features.
Rooms
CAPD student reps have raised concerns that displaying Industrial Design,
Design Engineering and CAPD in the opened out areas of P142, P143 and
P144 will be too cramped. The meeting decided that the Steering Group
would review the floor plans for the Thomas Hardy Suite and then a decision
would be reached.
A CAPD student rep also requested that a show reel of InDe, DE and CAPD’s
work should be played in the Coyne Lecture Theatre throughout the Festival.
The meeting discussed that in previous years it has been more successful to
play a show reel within the rooms that the work is displayed in. However, it
was decided by the group that the students should be informed of this and
then allowed to make their own decision.
Action – Emma to source floor plan of Thomas Hardy Suite to share with the
Steering Group.
Student Requirements
It was noted that the students are not coming forward with their requirements
for the Festival, and concern was expressed that this is causing a delay in
equipment being sourced. The Group decided that Friday 25 April will be the
final day that requirements can be submitted.
Action – Emma to email student reps to notify them of the deadline.
Helen to contact Reza regarding an audit of the boards.
Blog
Rodger showed the FoDI blog http://festivalofdesigninnovation.blogspot.com/
The blog is used to keep all students and staff up-to-date with the latest news
regarding the FoDI.
Sponsorship
It was raised that we are still in need of more sponsors for the Festival. It was
decided that during the Tesco visit, potential sponsorship for the Festival
would be discussed over lunch. Charles Elder from PR will also attend.
Action - Norman will contact Bob Cripps to discuss potential sponsorship
from Vosper Thorneycroft.
Emma to find out contact information for JPMorgan’s corporate sponsorship
department.
Keynote Speaker
Since the last meeting Tom Lawton has replied to the request for him to
perform a keynote speech, and will not be able to confirm his attendance until
May. The Group agreed that this would be too late to wait for confirmation for
a keynote speaker.
It was decided that as the 2007 keynote speech was such a success Mandy
Haberman would be the first choice for this year’s keynote speaker. The
Group’s second choice is Dids MacDonald from ACID (Against Copying in
Design).
Action – Tania to ask Many Haberman if she would be willing to do this year’s
keynote speech, and if not would she be willing to come back next year.
If Mandy is unavailable for this year, Norman will contact Dids MacDonald.
Schools’ Day
This year will be organised by Education Liaison and year 11, 12 and some
year 13 students from all A and B feeder schools in a 50 mile radius will be
invited. The students will receive a campus tour, BU life talk, time to look
around the Festival, lunch and a design talk.
Extra Day
The Group discussed the possibility of extending the Festival by an extra day
next year. It was noted that Brian Duke from Aimhigher has offered to fund the
Festival being open for an extra day so that 17 schools can each bring 60
students to look round.
It was decided that the Festival should remain open until 14.00 on Tuesday
next year.
Invitations
Names of any companies that staff and students would like to invite to the
Festival should be sent to Emma Bennett by Tuesday (8 March).
Action – Emma to notify the School of this deadline.
Building Work in the Sports Hall
It was decided that the contractors carrying out the work in the Sports Hall
should be met with to discuss the implications of the work being carried out
during the Festival.
Action – Helen to meet with Ray McHugh Project Manager for the building
work.
AOB
Action – Emma to bring along proof of brochure to Steering Group meeting
once it has been produced.
