Recruit a placement student
A placement can provide not only the opportunity for an undergraduate
to put theory into practice, but can also bring the company a new
perspective and a fresh approach to the business.
Design and creative technology
students are required to complete a
minimum of 40 weeks in a relevant
placement for their Sandwich
degree; however this can be made
up of multiple shorter placements if
necessary. We therefore welcome any
opportunities of relevant experience
for our students, whether short or
long placements.

the solution of a design problem. The understanding
and utilisation of these advanced tools gives these
graduates an advantage in the commercial world,
where reduced development costs and reduced time to

The students’ projects encompass creativity, analysis
and technical understanding and their final designs are
expected to be commercially viable, fully engineered and
ready for manufacture. I, and the rest of the CAPD team,

Electric Jack
Have you ever struggled with the jack provided with your car? The 12V
Electric Jack has been designed to make lifting your car easier, quicker and
safer. Developed using humanistic design, the product allows the user to
stand at a safe distance from the vehicle while it is lifted. Lifting takes place
courtesy of a planetary geared motor, while overload protection is provided
via a torque-limiting clutch.
The knowledge and confidence I have gained from my time at BU and
placement year as an Automotive Packaging Designer has been invaluable.

KMPRSR
KMPRSR is designed to be used in a commercial kitchen. As waste collection
costs are ever increasing, KMPRSR reduces the volume of the waste and
vacuum-seals the bags to ensure that they are odour free when stored in
outdoor bins for a long time. This allows waste collections to be smaller
volume and less frequent, saving the customer money.
Studying at BU has been a great experience and I look forward to utilising all
the skills I have learned.

The Simplex
The current style of computer cases are not specifically designed for access
after the PC has been assembled, often making integral components
difficult to reach. The Simplex provides a unique method of accessing
vital components, utilising a sliding motherboard tray for effective results.
Continual maintenance or replacement of components thereafter will be a
much less demanding task.
Studying at university has taught me a lot about the diversity of design and
has given me a chance to focus my design work effectively.

Keg Master
The Keg Master is designed to move beer kegs easily and safely, and
enables kegs to be stacked securely so cold storage areas can be used more
efficiently. It allows users to easily lift and manage 50 litre kegs that weigh
well over 60kg, greatly reducing the risk of personal injury or damage to
floor surfaces.
My time at Bournemouth University has developed my personal and design
skills to the level needed to enter the industry and given me the confidence
to apply them.

Automatic Beer Dispenser
The Automatic Beer Dispenser has been designed to reduce waiting time
at the bar and subsequently increase turnover and bar staff productivity.
Once activated, the dispenser can serve the perfect pint of lager unaided;
this gives staff members the opportunity to pour and serve another drink
or even receive payment from the customer. The customer’s realisation of
the automatic process is reinforced by the transparent central casing which
shows the product’s mechanical workings.
Studying at BU and being around professionals has given me a great start
into what is hopefully going to be a long career in design.

The PREDATOR Exercise Machine
Why exercise for so long and see such little gain? The PREDATOR Exercise
Machine will maximise results whilst saving time in the gym. The leaping
movement incorporates a whole body workout and by making the muscles
work together in the gym they should work more functionally out of the gym,
when it matters.
My time at BU has been extremely enjoyable; CAPD has given me a wealth
of knowledge for the real world. Look out life here I come!

Telescopic Portable
Wheelchair Ramp
For many wheelchair users, a trip to the shops on public transport is still a
problem, with the risk of no ramp being available on the transport and the
possibility of poor access to shops. The Telescopic Portable Wheelchair Ramp
would enable the user to overcome these obstacles by having their own ramp
with them at all times.
Working on this project has developed the tools and skills that I have learned
through studying the rest of the course.

Park & Charge
The Park & Charge is a charging unit for electric two-wheeled vehicles,
offering a stylish and environmentally-friendly solution for urban-based
commuters. The workplace-installed unit accommodates up to five electric
two-wheeled vehicles in just one car parking bay, maximising electric vehicle
usage within limited space.
My time at BU and on placement as a design engineer has been challenging
and inspiring. Working through the entire design process has left me eager
to see more of my designs reaching production.

Light Lock
A major problem with owning a bicycle is theft, as more than 1,200 bikes
are stolen everyday in the UK and few are recovered. The Light Lock is an
innovative multi-functional locking system that provides protection against
theft of bicycles and bicycle lights whilst eliminating issues in the current
market with usability.
My time at BU has helped broaden my design skills and sharpen my
knowledge of design principles, which I hope to apply to a future career
in design.

Pull-up Assistant
The Pull-up Assistant is an assisted pull-up machine that is designed for
home use. Trying more than a few pull-ups is hard for the average person,
with The Pull-up Assistant you can do more repetitions and build up your
strength, as you are effectively lifting a lower weight for a longer time.
My time at Bournemouth University has taught me how to develop my ideas

At last, a truly portable baby bottle warmer! This product can heat your
baby’s bottle to 35°C within minutes no matter where you are. What’s more,
you can heat your bottle several times before recharging, especially useful
for hungry babies or twins. This product utilises thermal transfer and
hotplate technology.
My time at Bournemouth University has not only helped develop my design
and CAD skills but also pushed me to develop my personal skills.

The Compactable Multi-Gym provides home fitness enthusiasts with a full

Seguir o Sol
Seguir o Sol is a 360˚ rotating sun lounger. It helps to move the lounger to
the desired position without the user having to lift and twist. This luxury
lounger’s 360˚ motion means it can follow the sun all day long or keep the
user in the shade thanks to a retractable visor. It is manually operated
with an easy twist of the handle. The mechanism is designed for optimum
efficiency and a reduction of friction.

Vanguard Spinal Board
The Vanguard Spinal Board represents a shift from a product born of
functional requirements to a holistic design that integrates usability,
clinical requirements and patient wellbeing. Current spinal immobilisation
equipment has been designed to meet one primary need. Each iteration of
design has added features as and when necessary, resulting in conflicts and
inconsistencies in usability and function.
My time at BU has developed my understanding of human-centric product
design and design optimisation, as well as my capacity to justify design
decisions effectively.

Arrow
This product was designed specifically to improve fuel economy whilst
towing multiple sail crafts. Vital feedback was obtained at key decision
points during development using the SlipStreamTrailers.co.uk portal.
Working with a large and knowledgeable user base has helped to develop a
product in line with consumer requirements. Advanced computer simulations
have allowed every detail to be analysed and optimised, ranging from air
flow considerations to the loading of components.
Seeing my own ideas in production during my placement has given me the
drive to continue delivering products that meet consumer needs.

Secure Surfboard Carry Case
The SSC case is designed to provide full, affordable protection for a surfboard
against theft or damage. In addition to protecting up to four surfboards, it
provides a safe, keyless-lockable space for storing modern day fob-style car
keys while surfing in the water.
Having trained as an electric design engineer for a utility company, obtaining
a degree in Design Engineering at BU was an excellent way forward.

This project has allowed me to develop an understanding of the
requirements and benefits involved with a novel process in green energy

Conservatory Natural
Heating Solution
Conservatories suffer from dramatic heat loss during the evening hours,
meaning costly electric heaters are generally used. The Conservatory Natural
Heating Solution uses stored heat energy gained through solar thermal
energy, generating cost – and emission – free heating for the evening hours.
My course at Bournemouth University, along with a year’s industrial
placement at Mercedes-Benz, has allowed me to continuously develop my
engineering skills and encouraged my interest in the renewable energy
sector of engineering as a career choice.

CO Smoke Escape Device
The CO Smoke Escape Device is a powered escape device that conforms to
BS EN 404: 2005, protecting the wearer from carbon monoxide and poisonous
gasses for up to 60 minutes. The product utilises a unique catalyst, powered
by a custom CFD designed radial impeller and volute casing that provide
elevated levels of protection.
My time at Bournemouth University and my placement at Avon Protection
Systems have both given me a wealth of knowledge and skills that I look
forward to developing in the future.

Hand Physiotherapy Device
The Hand Physiotherapy Device project incorporates all the essential
equipment to aid recovery from a severe hand injury. It is a compact and
portable device that will help prevent long-term disability. The device has a
feature that monitors the patient’s progression, optimising the chances of a
successful recovery.
BU has given me the chance to express and grow my creativity in the field
of Design Engineering, thanks to thorough teaching of both design and

Centrifugal Pump Front Cover
Working with sponsor company Godwin Pumps, this design features an
optimised anti pre-rotation vane and a non-carry-over system that is suitable
for both ejector and vacuum pump priming systems. It is smaller, lighter
and cheaper to produce than current designs, and only requires minor
modifications to make it suitable for any pump size.
I have enjoyed the time spent at BU. I have developed a thorough
background in engineering and gained valuable experience on placement at
ITT Godwin Pumps.

Quiet Desktop PC Cooling Solution
The cooling solution has been designed to deal with the waste heat
produced by the main internal components inside the PC while reducing the
audible fan noise. Able to be retrofitted inside any standard desktop PC, it
offers a low-cost alternative to water cooling while using a reliable and nonmechanical
heat transfer technology.
Studying Design Engineering at Bournemouth University has developed my
skills covering wide aspects of the design process which I hope to transfer to

Heat Harvester
We live in an infinitely rich and beautiful world where climate change
threatens our future. Good design is essential to our survival and my time
at BU has made me look into myself and the world around to question and
understand what good design is. Good design is simple. Simple does not
imply easy.
My placement at Reva Electric Car Company (G-Wiz in the UK), showed me
the complexities and intricacies associated with “green” design and design
in general. For that, I am grateful.

Educational Remote
Control HeliCar
The Educational Remote Control Heli Car is a project developed to help
educate students between 11 and 19 years old studying engineering,
design and technology as well as education practitioners, with the aid
and provisions of teaching and learning resources. The Heli Car is also a
purchasable product for recreational purposes. It has unique features such as
flight and it can also be used as a remote control vehicle.
As a graduate License Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with KLM, after a
change of career as a Senior D&T CAD/CAM Instructor with Harris Academy,
my institute gave me CPD sponsorship and the opportunity to study Top-up
Design Engineering at Bournemouth University.

Tennis Training Aid
Playing or practicing tennis necessitates an opponent; without one, it is very
difficult to practice. This product, paired with a tennis ball delivery system
encourages individual play by ‘mimicking’ an opponent. Incorporating a
motorised target running along the line of the net with adaptable telescopic
poles, the user is able to adjust the height of the target and practice a variety
of tennis strokes.
My time at Bournemouth University has helped me to develop my abilities
and knowledge within the field of engineering.

Smart Riser Aid
The Smart Riser Aid is a mechanical aid which incorporates a Sit-to-Stand
device in a mobility frame, allowing users to rise from a seat with no
problems. This aid allows users to overcome weaknesses in stability and
movement and allows for individuality, a key aspect for day-to-day life.
My time at Bournemouth University has not only allowed me to further

Atlantic 85 Slipway Launch &
Recovery System (Baltimore
Lifeboat Station)
This new launch and recovery system will allow the RNLI to re-utilise
existing slipway lifeboat stations for use with the new Atlantic 85 inshore
lifeboat. This will help to reduce the reconstruction time of existing buildings
and overall conversion costs and allow for standard equipment to be used at
multiple lifeboat stations.
Studying at Bournemouth University has given me the chance to develop my

Ceiling Lift
My final year project is a pneumatically powered ceiling lift for the building
industry. This aids the operator in lifting building materials to their
installation height, using a remote control to make it easier to operate from a
distance or up a ladder.
Design Engineering at Bournemouth University has added to my previous
engineering experience learned in my apprenticeship, ONC and HNC in
Mechanical Engineering by reinforcing my engineering background and
increasing and broadening my knowledge.

BabySafe Night Monitor
The BabySafe Night Monitor is designed to monitor the heart rate, body
temperature and respiratory rate of an infant whilst he/she is sleeping. The
aim of the device is to alert parents if an unsafe reading has been taken.
Studying at BU has provided me with a solid foundation and opened my
eyes to the world of design. After a lot of hard work, this course has helped
me grow as an individual, developing my technical skills and knowledge
required in industry and has re-enforced my passion for engineering.

Domestic Recycling
Compactor Unit
My final year project’s purpose is to make domestic recycling easier and
reduce the size of recycling, as well as increasing the efficiency and
awareness of domestic recycling. This makes for a more sustainable way
of living and allows us to play a part in reducing our own carbon footprint.
The unit will consist of multiple compartments and include a compacting
mechanism to reduce the size of certain materials.
Bournemouth University has given me the opportunity to express my
creativity and educate me further in my desired field of work.

Oscillating Wing Wind
Power Generator
The Oscillating Wing Wind Power Generator uses a large wing to create a
plunge displacement, fluctuating in an oscillating motion. A dynamic system
is employed to optimise its performance given real time weather conditions,
where the frequency of oscillation is manipulated allowing beneficial
efficiency by creating a stable flutter.
Both my time at BU and my placement with Airbus has allowed me to
develop a large range of professional and technical skills, which I’ve applied
to my final year project.

Automatic Bicycle Gear Selector
The Automatic Bicycle Gear Selector uses strain gauges to assess the forces
being applied by the rider and changes gear to ensure the force is not too
great. Using programmable logic, the system can also be used for training
and rehabilitation.

The Easy Launch Boat Trailer
The Easy Launch Boat Trailer is designed to assist in the launching of small
boats from slipways. The design is based on telescopic features that allow
the trailer to extend backwards towards the water, thus eliminating the
problems associated with reversing the towing vehicle into the water.
The Design Engineering course, along with my placement at GBH-Ramps,
has given me the chance to further develop my engineering skills and
enabled me to discover the importance of the design stage in a project.

The Assisted Shopping Cart is designed to aid the elderly and disabled with

Branch Between Two Communities
Based in Croydon, this project’s aim was to transform the existing park and
courtyard into a bridge to connect the communities living in two blocks of

The Burrow
On entry the calm and sombre interior attracts the passive attention of the
user as they sink into the seating with only relaxation on their mind.
With work and stress taking over the lives of many people, offices do not
offer a place to sit back, relax and recharge your batteries during breaks.
My time at Bournemouth University studying Industrial Design has been
a continuous learning curve. From manufacturing through to semiotics,

Businesses today try to clearly differentiate their premium product from mass
market ones to build brand awareness and maximise revenue. In Britain,
first class rail travel is seen as expensive, providing no real difference to

Young Person’s Camper Van
With a huge amount of young people wanting to travel, this vehicle has been
designed to give a camping experience without the need for a tent and a way
to adventure without the hassles that camping entails.
The Camper was initially based on horse-drawn gypsy carriages, which
have been associated with being the ‘symbol of freedom and adventure’.
It was further developed using inspiration from retro caravans and modern
car manufacturing techniques.
Studying Industrial Design at Bournemouth University has allowed me to
grow as a designer and, just as importantly, as a person.

National Aikido Centre
Aikido has been a practiced martial art in Britain for 56 years, yet still has no
purpose-built dojo to call its own. The National Aikido Centre is a large dojo
built with Aikido in mind. Designed around the idea of simplicity in pure,
fundamental engineering principles, the centre is constructed from humble
materials. Everything you see has a carefully considered purpose, here form
very much follows function.

Sonic Space

My design is a spectator viewing stand which can adapt to changes in the

Progrow Building Developments
Progrow breathes new life into the UK’s central cities by providing a way
to grow vegetation to produce oxygen and consume. The organic, futuristic
form of the structure will hopefully inspire people to change the way
they think about life. It is designed to be attached to current structures,
harvesting light and water to feed the growing matter inside, much like a
plant photosynthesises.
Studying at Bournemouth University has broadened my knowledge of

The Art Therapy Centre is situated in Kuwait. The aim is to help teenagers

In this current economic climate many families are struggling to survive; 22%
of families with children in London live under the poverty line. This children’s
centre is designed for children up to the age of seven. My users will occupy

Mental Health Spa
My final year project is a mental health spa for adults including the general

The Lonsdale Centre
Dementia is increasing, with close to one million suffering; having
experienced a personal journey it inspired me to create a facility to cater
for their needs. Located in Weston-Super-Mare, a place to fulfil days and
stimulate minds, with 1950s-style furnishings allowing the patients to
reminisce. Spaces to learn, relax, exercise and play include multi-sensory
rooms, a hydrotherapy pool and healing gardens.
My placement at Masterpieces Ltd and time at BU has broadened my design

Covert Therapy –
The Underground Experience
Based in London’s Southwark Underground Station, this concept utilises the
therapeutic nature of sound, frequency, vibration and colour. The functioning
station uses cymatics, the sacred solfeggio frequencies and the effect of
vibration to help rebalance our body’s own natural energies, providing the
customer with a complete sensory experience.

It was the current health issues children are experiencing due to lack of

academy with dining areas and vegetable gardens for learning about
balanced diets and a brain gym with Montessori-inspired materials for

Diabetes Education Centre
Diabetes is becoming the greatest health challenge facing the UK today
and many people feel they do not get enough support. My Croydon-based
education drop-in centre offers a comfortable environment for newly
diagnosed and long-term diabetics to learn about and help manage their
diabetes. It has three main areas of focus, diet, exercise and mindset, all of
which are crucial for maintaining a good level of health.

The site is located in Reykjavik, Iceland. The inspiration comes from the

car park into a luxury and elitist cosmetic surgery for the rich. Clients

the luxury of surgery, exclusive restaurants, and lavish hotel accommodation.
It is the new place to be seen, not just for surgery, but also for social status.

London Olympic Museum -
Old Ford Lock
In preparation for hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, London’s
East End is witnessing mass regeneration. As a result, this project sees the
conversion of a former early 20th century multi-storey stable block into the
city’s first Olympic Museum.
Situated across the canal from the Olympic Park at Old Ford Lock, the unique
waterfront setting is the ideal opportunity to show London as a sporting city,
ready to leave a legacy for people to enjoy beyond the games.
Professional experience at both Kelly Hoppen Interiors and Lee Broom further
developed the designer qualities needed for me to complete the project.

Museum of the Horse
My individual design project is a conversion of the Holy Trinity Brompton
church and its surrounding acreage in South Kensington, London, into a
contemporary but timeless museum about the horse.
My users will primarily be tourists, visitors and people who live in London.
The museum will bring a positive contribution to this well-known area,
providing an inspirational and interactive experience to create stimulating
value for its users.
I have been able to excel within my chosen design profession through my
time at Bournemouth University and a placement with MRD London.

The Xibitor
This 1959 cargo boat has been redesigned to accommodate the growing
trend of ‘pop-up’ retail. This unusual retail platform allows short-lease rental
space for retailers and a revitalised retail experience for the consumer. The
Xibitor not only supplies a flexible and unique space for a retailer to exhibit
new trends or limited edition products but allows opportunity for their
business to expand their market by frequently changing location, docking in
many ports across the UK.

Interactive Aquarium
My individual design project site is Bournemouth’s pier approach building,
which inspired my concept. The Interactive Aquarium is mainly aimed at
adults as the location itself has many attractions for families and children
allowing this building to be more focused at this market. It will have both a
swimming pool and fish tanks to create an ‘under the sea’ atmosphere, not
only for those who wish to swim but also for spectators.
My experience at Bournemouth University has been thoroughly enjoyable,
extremely educational and I will definitely miss it.

Arcadia Fashion Design Centre
Arcadia Fashion Design Centre is a unique base in fashionable South
Kensington, offering the missing link designers need when trying to break
into this cut throat industry. The creative and pro-active environment offers
a place to work and grow, building a designer profile with the support
of development programmes and studio workshop space. A boutique
shop and live catwalk events display the work created by the designers,
understanding whether they are relevant and realistic to the industry.
The combination of university and my placement with Monteith Scott have
equipped me with the valuable skills and experience to succeed in my

A Chora Dance Space
A Chora is situated in Basildon, the busy new town in Essex. Basildon is
known for accommodating London population overspill after World War II.
However Basildon has been neglected throughout the years, and is greatly
overlooked. My project aims to help rebuild Basildon’s identity in society and
attract global interest through dance and culture. Dynamic elements of the
new structure will establish design excellence into the environment.

Home from Home –
Cancer Care Centre
One in three people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime.
There isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ recipe for how to deal with cancer. Everybody
needs to find their own way and ‘Home from Home’ provides the help
required. In a welcoming and friendly environment, it widens access to
palliative care, offering a service based on need and better quality of life,
not diagnosis.
My time at BU and working with Vanessa Brady and Waghorne Interior
Designers has provided me with invaluable first-hand experience of the
industry, enhancing my attributes as a designer.

Phoenix House
Ex-servicemen and women account for roughly one in ten homeless people.
With the Iraq and Afghanistan wars still in progress, increasing numbers
of service personnel are being discharged, many of whom find
themselves homeless.
I have designed a concept which creates a strong sense of community,
giving stability and a sense of belonging, enabling them to rebuild their lives
through rehabilitation, training and back-to-work initiatives. A key feature is
the use of salvaged materials to highlight the importance of sustainability.
My time at BU and placement for Steve Howie Design has allowed me to
develop and understand the design industry further.

My interest in stadia design and passion for football fueled this project.
Analysing the lack of facilities for AFC Bournemouth’s football team within
Dean Court Stadium, I redesigned primarily ‘fan based’ catering areas into
more dynamic, state-of-the-art changing and training facilities specfically
built for the players.
My placement at Burnham Workplace was my favourite year of the degree;
being thoroughly enjoyable and providing me with invaluable hands on
experience that has given me the determination and avidity to pursue my
chosen career.

Caterham is a manufacturer of specialist lightweight British sports cars.
They produce a range of models for both road and racing use. Manufacturing
is presently spread across several different sites hundreds of miles apart
across England. Situated in a picturesque countryside location, this new
facility will house manufacturing, repair, and administration areas solely for
Caterham racing cars.

A Place for the Imagination –
A New Generation Kindergarten
While adult environments have come to resemble those of a child’s, children’s
spaces seem to have been left behind. This particular kindergarten takes
the concept of Montessori schools, but is an environment where all cultures
can come together. There are no standard desks, but a purposely ‘active’
designed environment to help Qatar’s fight against obesity.
I have been fortunate to have had exposure to the design industry through
my 18 month work experience with Bluu Qatar LLC, where I had the
opportunity to practise and develop my key skills.

The Leisure Hub
The Leisure Hub is located alongside the River Taw in the heart of North
Devon. It’s a hub full of entertainment, activities and expression of its users.

a place to go instead of hanging around on the streets, and to help create

Digital Video Composition
My final year project demonstrates the use of multiple image/video capture
techniques in a single composition, tied together with advanced digital
effects whilst maintaining a sense of fluidity and narrative. Stop-Motion,
Panarama, Time-lapse and Photo-motion are sequenced and integrated with
aid from post production effects such as 2D/3D tracking, Chroma-Keying and
Virtual Camera placement.

Internet Streaming for
Digital Video Broadcasting
Television broadcasters in recent years have begun to use the internet
to deliver video content. Services such as BBC’s iPlayer have become
widely used as a catch-up service but not as a replacement for traditional
broadcasting methods like digital terrestrial. This project investigates the
capability and advantages of using the UK’s broadband network as the
primary method for delivering HD broadcast content.

Interactive Hazard Awareness
Guide for TV Studios
Serious games, a relatively novel form of interactive digital media, provide
additional outcomes to the player such as training and education rather
than purely entertainment. This project is an attempt to utilise state-of-theart
media technology to develop an innovative prototype of an interactive
serious game that aims to prevent accidents caused by people in hazardous
environments, such as a TV studio.

Investigation and Development of
Stereoscopic Editing using

My final year project involved studying the innovative use of editing. To test
and explore this I have developed a 3D cinematic. Converted into a sequence,
the cinematic is edited in several different ways to convey different reactions.
Analysing the impact of 2D versus 3D productions to the viewer and
distinguishing if stereoscopy (3D) adds value and is sustainable for the future.

Using EEG BCI technology for

in modern gaming
Brain Computer Interface (BCI) technology has developed greatly over
the last decade, becoming more accurate than ever and increasingly
accessible on a consumer level. This research-based project investigates the
relationship between the difficulty of first person shooter games and the level
of attention given by the player. All testing is carried out using a consumeravailable
electroencephalographic BCI headset.

MicFX is a stomp box designed to interface dynamic microphones with
effects units designed for use with electric guitars. It allows for an all-in-one

Beat to Midi
Beat to Midi is a drum detection and replacement tool programmed in
C++ using the VST SDK. Audio drum data is fed into the plug-in, each hit
detection is then output as a midi note. Using dynamic detection via a
pattern matching system the plug-in can learn and subsequently detect
(and appropriately output) different drum sounds.

Scratch FX
Scratch FX is a live performance/production tool developed in Max/MSP for
PC and Mac. Scratch FX will read any audio sample and perform a scratch
using that audio. The scratches can either be selected from a preset library
or using a custom design created by the user, and effects such as filters and
delays can also be applied. Hardware control is available via MIDI, or OSC
using TouchOSC (and similar interfaces) available on iOS devices.

A digital simulation of a Laney
Cub 10 Valve Guitar amplifier
The model is a VST plug-in real time guitar amplifier simulator built using

TouchFX
An interface for manipulation of Guitar FX and MIDI data using a variety
of sensors. The device uses accelerometers and force sensitive resistors
to control variables in a software environment. The interface is based on
the micro controller “Arduino Mega 2560”, this platform is open source.
The interaction is realised through a software package called “Max msp”.
The interface is designed to attach to the body of the guitar, and mimic the
contour and shape.

iPhone Impulse Response
Application
An iPhone application written in Objective-C and C++, designed to make
capturing accurate impulse response files easy on a mobile device. The
application records both impulse source and sine sweep recordings, and then
performs deconvolution on the sine sweep recording to produce a final impulse
response file, which can be used within an external convolution reverb plug-in
to simulate the environment in which the user captured the recording.
Studying at BU has encouraged me to test my limits, and has provided me
with the skills necessary to work in the field of audio technology.

iPhone Controller For Studio
Headphone Monitoring
To enable the user to have complete control over their headphone mix I’ve
created a mixer patch in Max/MSP, which is fully controlled by the Touch
OSC iPhone app. Audio is routed directly from your DAW into Max, with
the user defined audio level then being sent to their headphone mix. It also
works for multiple users simultaneously.

Learn and Interact with MIDI is an educational point and click adventure and
puzzle game teaching students and players core MIDI concepts and uses in
an easy to digest manner.
The game is set in a studio environment with you taking on the role of a
student who needs to revise for an upcoming exam by taking you through
the studio, investigating various pieces of equipment and objects to gather
the information needed to revise whilst quizzing you throughout.

A research-based project investigating the effects of sound on a listener
within the context of storyspace, specifically targeting emotions of test
participants and incorporating aspects of semantic listening. Background

Sympathy Networked
Modular Synthesizer
Sympathy is a freeform modular synthesizer VST plugin programmed in C++.
The plugin allows users to build and play their synthesizers together over
the internet, using several DSP objects such as oscillators, filters and effects,
and also synchronizes all played notes and interactions, creating a seamless
shared experience with minimal bandwidth requirements.

Binaural Recording
Binaural Recording: is it compatible enough with video for it to be
commercially viable in mainstream film and media and is it feasible to create
a Kunstkopf Dummy Head with a built-in camera?
Binaural recording (true 3D sound) is created using microphones placed
into the ears of a dummy head. It differs from surround sound as it takes
into account the height and depth of the sound source but must be listened
to using headphones. My project looks into whether it could ever become
popular in mainstream media and also whether installing a camera into the
head affects the quality of the audio, or whether people’s opinions of the
audio changes.

The Drow-Z driver alarm combines safety and style. It is intended for

Snowboard Protective
Accessory Casing
A board-mounted housing for valuable equipment such as a phone, compact
digital camera, goggles and a snowboard tool. The casing aims to relocate
items that would usually be held in a backpack or on the rider’s person, and
place them in a low impact area, as well as protecting its contents from the
harsh winter environment.
BU has given me a broad skill set in design. I look forward to applying this

saving design, ideal for homes devoid of growing space. The IEHG has been
designed to embrace an eco-friendly and sustainable perspective. It is based
on natural design principles and biomimicry.
I have enjoyed and valued my time at Bournemouth University and look

The Fish Tank Filter and Air Pump
My project combines both the filter and air pump required for a fish tank into
one unit, as well as incorporating ambient lighting. It is aimed at 10-16 year
olds and is unique due to the aesthetics of the product. The design enhances
the tank environment rather than spoiling it like current products on
the market.
My time at BU, as well as a year in industry, has developed my innovative

Health club users commonly suffer from athlete’s foot. This is a result of
walking barefooted across communal changing rooms and failing to dry
feet thoroughly before putting on footwear. SoleAir is a product that can be
installed in a changing room, allowing the user to lower their risk of catching
a foot infection.
My placement at Bosch Lawn & Garden was an exciting opportunity to

Adap-table: The Culinary
Camping Workstation
Adap-table provides a shielded area for food preparation with standing
storage that can be completely collapsed for easy transport. The adjustable
legs allow for changing the height and accommodating unlevel terrain. Twin
solar lights on the back edge provide a permanent, directional light source for
cooking at night.
It meets the needs of cooking outdoors while appealing through simple
workability, compact size and rugged aesthetic.

Tot Tub
Tot Tub is a baby bath designed to fill first-time parents with confidence
when bathing their newborn child. Tot Tub incorporates a non-slip
support, allowing the parent to use both hands whilst bathing their child,
a thermometer indicating safe water temperatures and a removable stand
reducing back pain from leaning down into the bath.
Studying at BU has set me in good stead for industry, developing my design

LightGuard
The last 5 years have seen a significant increase in bicycle use. However,
when polled, two of the main reasons people gave for not cycling were fear
of accidents and the inconvenience of being sprayed with water and dirt
from the bicycle tyres. LightGuard is an aftermarket bicycle product that
provides constant effective safety lighting and protection from road spray.
LightGuard’s lighting is activated and powered by the movement of the
bicycle’s wheels removing the dependence on disposable batteries.

Medicold Portable Cold
Therapy Device
Used to aid in the recovery of acute sports injuries, the unit circulates
coolant, cooling to the desired temperature and then pumps the fluid into
a pack in contact with the skin. This provides efficient cold therapy by
reducing pain and swelling and promoting natural healing for athletes and
sporting prosumers.
BU has enabled me to develop key skills that I now feel ready to take forward
into the design world. I have confidence I can build a successful career on
this foundation.

Auditis Portable Alerting System
for the Hearing Impaired
My product for the hearing impaired aims to address the problem of social
isolation caused by needing to hear the world more loudly. It alerts the user
to everyday interactions around the home, such as the telephone ringing, or
the doorbell sounding, through audible, visual and physical feedback.

WeldAir
The WeldAir is a ventilated welding mask, designed to cool down the user
and provide them with clean air. The inhalation of by-product particles
produced whilst welding and overheating are hazards often overlooked
in the metal fabrication industry. The WeldAir combats these problems,
drawing in air using a fan and filter system incorporated into the mask.

Educational Plant Growing Device
This device will allow the user to grow a plant and to perform various

Bedchair & Equipment Porter
The Bedchair & Equipment Porter is a stable transportation device for the
cumbersome equipment required for overnight coarse fishing. Once the
fishing location is reached, the equipment porter can be unloaded and
unfolded to provide the user with a comfortable and stable sleeping platform
that is height adjustable to cope with uneven ground.

Bee Positive
Bee Positive is an observation solitary bee habitat for junior schools. It

Core Defence
The Core Defence monitors fire fighters’ core body temperatures and
gives an audible warning before dangerous levels are reached. If a critical
temperature is reached, a distress signal is sent to a monitoring station,
enabling the officer-in-charge to identify which of his men is in danger. This
unique product helps fire fighters better evaluate their own safety and wellbeing
whilst allowing officers to react quickly to potentially fatal situations
thereby saving lives.

Baby Flower
This commercial flight seat is for parents travelling with infants up to six
months old. The product is designed to fit a large number of economy class

Indoor Air Pollution Extraction
Unit for the Developing World
The World Health Organisation estimates that air pollution from indoor
cook-stoves kills over two million people annually. My project is a sustainably
powered extraction unit that removes this pollution without requiring

The EnergyBreeze is a solar-powered air circulator for domestic greenhouses,

STAMP- Study Light for Third
World Communities
The STAMP (Study Lamp) is designed for communities in rural eastern Africa
who have no mains electricity. The lamp works using rechargeable batteries,

Neogen – Kinetic Energy Generator
Neogen is a novel concept providing hikers with an effortless method for
charging USB devices in an environment which typically has no electric
hook up available. Mechanical energy from hiking is transferred into stored
electrical energy. Once the user arrives at their destination they can charge

Ventus Bike lights
My project is based around a design brief set by Ventus, who specialise in
using dynamo technology.

Wheeled Sports Bag
The clever use of space and compartments allow the user to be organised as

The changing of brake fluid for automotive outlets is a time-consuming
two-man operation. The One Man Brake Bleeder provides an intelligent

Shark Stopper
My project is a shark-repellent device. I collaborated with “Shark Defence”,
an American company who have developed a humane chemical that repels
sharks. My design administers this chemical in the most effective way
for a commercial diver. I carried out in-depth research on sharks, in the
Bahamas, at the Bimini Shark Lab. Experiencing and fully understanding the
reality of shark encounters allowed me to design the device to meet the full

There are currently 13,000 District Nurses in the UK, a profession that lacks
equipment designed specifically for them and often improvises, using various
bags to carry supplies. My design is a Medic Case designed specifically for
District Nurses that transports medical supplies and patient medication in a
safe container. Due to the challenging environments faced by District Nurses,
my research into a profession needing solutions has been insightful.

Bath Aid
My project addresses the high number of scald injuries to children due to
bath water being too hot. The bath alarm incorporates a temperature gauge,

The Perfect Pendulum device helps golfers develop one of most fundamental
aspects of their putting game; distance control. Through entering three
variables, the device operates an LED sequence that the user can mimic
and apply to their putt, helping the player develop their muscle memory and

An important daily task of a district nurse is to bandage patients’ legs. This

Bath Safe
Bath Safe alleviates the worries faced by busy parents at bath time by
monitoring the level of water filling in the tub. An alarm sounds when
the water gets to the parents’ selected level, preventing overfilling. A
temperature feature also displays whether or not the water is safe to bathe
their child in.

Sprint React
Sprint React is a sprint training device for individual athletes measuring
reaction times from starting blocks, negating the need for personal
coaching, electronic starting gun and computerised timing, allowing training
to be self-monitoring.
Current reaction timing is specialised and only utilised at high competition
level but it is key to improving competitiveness. Few athletic venues provide
reaction timings as these systems are complex. Sprint React can be used on
any surface, is portable, and ideal for athletes at all levels.

For parents it’s a frequent problem getting their young ones to brush,
and with tooth decay being a major issue amongst children it can be a
big concern. Brush Buddy is designed to stimulate children to brush their
teeth, helping to promote thorough brushing and build a routine. It makes
the business of brushing teeth fun and playful with the use of audio
encouragement and colourful flashing LEDs.

Garden Sentinel – Pest Deterrent
The Garden Sentinel is designed to deter foxes and other common garden

Getting a drink at a bar can be a task within itself. At crowded bars you can

The Edge
Meet the enabling device for disabled people that increases independence
at meal times. The rotating surface plate gives the user control over the
orientation of the plate to bring any edge to a side guard for scooping and

Tribal Rebirth
Inspired by the vibrance of traditional African culture… I wanted to capture
the energy and naivety of the rich wealth of this unique tribal art. Seeking to
investigate the rich natural earthy tones and accentuate with the vivid red
and glowing yellow tones favoured by the Zulu tribes. The cotton and jersey
hand-dyed fabrication is mixed with Springbok skins sourced from Africa;
hand painted body suits create a second skin with a haphazard mix of metal

Elegance Redefined
Originally inspired by the glamour and elegance of the bias cut creations of
the 1920s and 30s which softly accentuated and defined the female form,
this collection redefines this elegance by using a combination of bias cutting
and draping, adding strong asymmetric lines and fluid volume, bringing an
element of strength and drama. The female form becomes abstracted and
empowered within strong lines and drapes, and a new take on eveningwear

A spring /summer collection which references the pathos of nostalgic black
and white film romances and wartime sweethearts. Soft draped silhouettes
are reminiscent of the wardrobes of iconic actresses such as Katherine
Hepburn. The monotone colour story, in soft wool crepes, silks and opaque
nets is delineated by checks formed from love letters wrapped around the

A new take on 1960s school uniforms, the film ‘An Education’ and nostalgic
elements of school life familiar to us all. The contradiction of strict tailoring,

A textile-based womenswear range of dresses and feminine separates for
spring/summer 2012 in crisp white cotton, cotton sateens and fluid habatai
silks. The vibrant mix of abstracted over-scaled digitally manipulated
images combined with hand brushed flowers are taken from classical floral
paintings, proportions are playful and traditional colouration is translated

A printed separates collection that investigates the traditional elements and
celebrates the faded glory of the luxurious Baroque and Rococco styles. The
simple silhouette is consciously pared down to accentuate the sumptuous

of age, verdigris tints and foiled highlights echoing faded opulence. Handdrawn

Local Produce
Supermarkets currently dominate the food market. Although they are
convenient, food has often travelled thousands of miles, is excessively
packaged and promotes globalisation. So what is the alternative?
‘Rooted’ is a new chain of environmentally friendly shops that sell local
ingredients targeted at young consumers. The idea behind it will hopefully
encourage young consumers to buy local food, integrate it into their
everyday lives, and inspire them to cook from scratch with fresh, core,
seasonal ingredients.

Smart Technology Research Centre
(STRC)
We have been able to draw on
the broader expertise within the
School of Design, Engineering and
Computing in the areas of cognitive
systems and robotics, psychology,
computer science, electronics and
computational mechanics. This
has enabled us to establish an
interdisciplinary and integrative
centre able to respond to the
increasing number of challenges
requiring multidisciplinary
approaches and need for advanced
innovative technological solutions
in a variety of important
application areas.
Our primary aim is the investigation
and development of smart systems
and technologies providing seamless
integration of information from
various sources for, among others,
innovative technology driven

services, extraction and intelligent
analysis of information from large
commercial and scientific databases,
reduction of operational costs of
industrial processes, analysis of
complex systems or improvement of
quality of life.
Our long term goal is addressing the
need for truly autonomous systems
with ability to make decisions and
operate in unknown environments
taking advantage of increasingly
available sensory technologies,
availability of huge amounts
of data in diverse disciplines
and proliferation of a variety of
mobile devices with significant
computational capacity.

Software Systems
Research Centre
The Software Systems Research
Centre focuses on the research,
development and application of
innovative modelling tools and
technologies for software systems.
A particular emphasis is upon
research that impacts professional
practice. Hence, research foci
are geared to those phases of
development that are either
particularly problematic (in terms
of the software industry) or which
have the biggest impact on project
success (or otherwise).
We concentrate, therefore, upon
those often neglected ‘upstream’
aspects of software engineering that
have a major impact on software
development practice, such as
moving from business perspectives
through requirements to
software design.

Sustainable Design
Research Centre
Material Surface Studies,
Engineering education and
integration of sustainable
development issues is the underlying
principle of this Research Centre.
Issues of tribology (friction, wear
and lubrication) are studied to help
understand their influence on product
durability and energy consumption.
The activities of this theme include:
Tribology & Environmental Design,
Ceramics Tribology, Sustainable
Design, and Lean Manufacturing.
and secured funding from The Royal
Academy of Engineering and EPSRC.
Collaborative work is also being
carried out with other universities
such as Oviedo University in
Spain, Ashikaga Institute in Japan,
and County Carlow Institute of
Technology in Ireland.

The Centre has extensive
experimental facilities to assess wear
mechanisms of rolling and sliding
contacts. This includes a rotary
tribometer, a micro-friction machine
and a scanning surface microscope.
We have formed strong partnerships
with multinational companies such
as SKF (Netherlands), Oakland Ridge
National Laboratories (USA), Royal
National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI),
Energetix, Smith & Nephew plc,

Design Courses
All postgraduate design course units
are taught intensively, usually over
4.5 days, with assessment normally
taking place 5-6 weeks after the
delivery of the unit.
MA Product Design Management
This course has been designed to
give an understanding of the key
issues involved in modern product
design management. A key part
in providing the understanding
of sustainability issues as well
as relevant business models for
competitive product development.
The subject area covers product
development at both ends – from
initial brief and research, through
to manufacture. This course will
appeal to design organisations as
well as engineering employers for
the advancement of candidates
holding a first degree, or equivalent
qualification, in a design related field.
MSc Design Engineering
This is a course for graduate
designers and/or engineers who
wish to gain the internationally
recognised title of Chartered
Engineer (CEng).
It is generally recognised that
professionals holding CEng status
benefit from significantly improved
career prospects than their peers.
The course is primarily targeted at
design engineering or product design
graduates who have an appropriate
Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
accredited degree or equivalent and
is accredited by the Institution of
Engineering Designers. The course
will provide the candidate with the
ability to function in a professional
engineering environment, using
modern methods and tools.

MSc Engineering
Design Innovation
If you are a graduate designer or
engineer in full time employment
then this course can enable you to
achieve the academic element for
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
The aim of this course is to develop
a comprehensive knowledge and
understanding of a wide range
of materials and, manufacturing
processes and their limitations.
You will apply mathematical
and computer-based models for
solving problems in engineering
design. There is an extended
project element which is primarily
research led involving an innovative
design exercise relating to your
employment. It is accredited by the
Institution of Engineering Designers.
MSc Engineering
Project Management
In recent years there have been
significant developments in the
philosophies, methods and tools for
planning and executing projects.
These are important to industries
engaged in developing new
products, systems or capabilities.

industry with personnel who
understand and can employ
management and technical tools,
and spearhead and manage the
development of new products
and projects appropriate for the
technological industries. It will be of
particular relevance to Knowledge
Transfer Partnership Associates

MSc Product Design
This is a multidisciplinary design
course which enables graduates to
enhance their technical knowledge
and allows them to design and
develop commercial products to an
advanced level. It provides industry
with personnel who understand and
can conduct product design using
cutting edge analysis methods as
well as employing business and
commercial expertise for use in a
competitive environment.
Graduates will also be able to
spearhead and manage projects
appropriate for the design and
manufacture industries. There will
be a practical element to a number of
the units and to the masters project.

MSc Sustainable Product Design
Awareness, understanding
and integration of sustainable
development issues within the
design process are the underlying
philosophies of this course. Meeting
the needs of the present generation
without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own
needs is the challenge for designers.
This is a complex and multidisciplinary
subject, so advanced
techniques are used to communicate
relevant case studies.

MSc Computer
Games Technology
This course aims to provide you
with the ability to plan, implement
and produce computer games using
modern methods and tools. In recent
years there have been significant
developments in the philosophies,
methods and tools for planning,
implementing and producing
computer games.
It is designed to provide industry
with personnel who understand
the technical tools and techniques
required by the gaming industry.
MSc Digital Music &
Audio Production
This course provides an in-depth
knowledge in key areas of music
technology and production. It will
prepare students for employment in
sectors such as internet distribution,
music production and postproduction,
software engineering
for music, composition for new
media and related disciplines. This
course takes into account the radical
changes in the music industry from
an offline model (CD sales and
radio) to an online dematerialised
model bringing new challenges and
