Poole Harbour WSHP
This is a heat pump system which extracts heat from water
in Poole harbour and delivers it efficiently to buildings in the
area. The aim is to cut heating costs and carbon emissions,
using a renewable source of energy. Design and engineering
knowledge were applied to create an efficient system suitable
to the particular environmental conditions of the Poole
Harbour and its surroundings. This project was developed
with the support of the Poole Tidal Energy Partnership.
Studying at BU has given me the opportunity to explore the
fundamental aspects of engineering and design and to acquire
valuable experience through the different assignments and
Powered Disc Socket Set
(PDSS)
The PDSS aims to satisfy a niche in the market, whilst
performing its primary function – to be a powered socket set
– effectively. Whenever there is a hard-to-reach nut or bolt
the PDSS will undo or tighten it. With a flexible midsection,
high torque production and a case with spare battery and
charger, this will be the next addition to your tool collection.
Studying at BU and working as a floodgate design engineer
on my placement has given me a fantastic grounding in
Unmanned Delivery Air
Vehicle (UDAV)
The Unmanned Delivery Air Vehicle (UDAV) is a concept
for a low-cost, expendable air vehicle that is capable of
achieving extreme ranges. It has been designed following a
project brief set by MBDA Missile Systems UK in September
2011. The UDAV will fill a variety of roles within the UK
Force Mix, including supply drop-off and ground support.
The expendable approach of the UDAV will ensure that it
fills a gap within current and planned UK capability.
BU has provided me with a fantastic first step into
engineering, teaching me a wide variety of invaluable skills.
A Smart Kettle for the
visually impaired elderly
Technology advances at a rapid pace, and the elderly
frequently get left behind. Designed specifically for elderly
people with age-related macular degeneration or other
visual impairments; the smart kettle economically heats and
dispenses the correct amount of water to any vessel. Using
advanced electronics gives the user familiar single button
operation without need for complex controls.
The course, including placement, has provided the initial step
into a career in engineering while cementing my interest in a
wide reaching and varied sector.
Smartphone-controlled
motorcycle start and throttle
This technology enables the user to remotely start and control
the throttle of their motorcycle through a smartphone. Utilising
the phone’s accelerometer and roll sensors, the retro fitted
actuator combines an aesthetically sympathetic housing with
hardware capable of including data logging, GPS tracking and
alarm functions. This design is therefore superior to current RF
remote starters.
My BU education has been an excellent addition to my previous
work within the aerospace industry, custom wheelchair design
and my current work for Battistinis Custom Cycles.
Plastic encased watercooled
charge air cooler
The water-cooled charge air cooler is designed to be fitted
within the underhood engine bay of a passenger vehicle or light
duty truck. It will be placed between the turbo/supercharger
and the intake manifold in a combustion engine, and will cool
hot air whilst maintaining the pressure. What is unique is
the plastic housing, capable of withstanding extremely high
pressures and temperatures from the charge air flow.
I have learnt how to develop and illustrate my ideas onto paper
and into 3D models, which have further evolved my creative
and technical side.
Variable Hull design
The Variable Hull is an aftermarket, stand-up personal
watercraft hull. The rear left and right halves of the hull pivot
independently, according to steering input. When turning,
the pivoting adjustments reduce the inner surface area of the
flat bottomed hull. This enables the watercraft to bank easily
and ensures the jet pumps intake remains submerged.
My enjoyable experience at Bournemouth University has
Water Is Life jerry can
The collection of water in areas of the world that have little
infrastructure is a gruelling daily task; often sources are
contaminated with waterborne pathogens leading to severe
health risks. Using ultraviolet sterilisation and microfiltration
technologies, the WIL jerry can eliminates the threat of
waterborne disease, providing a sustainable source of
safe drinkable water to global populations. Primarily for
distribution to populations of the developing world, WIL is
also aimed at use in humanitarian situations to aid disasterstricken
areas.
Transfer trolley
The design of the transfer trolley provides a safe method of
laterally transferring casualties suspected of having a spinal
column injury. The unique design of the mattress cassette
provides a full-length radio-translucent surface, which
minimises patient movement via deployment as a stretcher.
The transfer trolley has simultaneously been designed to
reduce physical demands for healthcare staff.
My time at Bournemouth University has allowed me to
develop both my design skills and technical knowledge within
the field of engineering, which was further reinforced during
