Games Technology
www.bournemouth.ac.uk/games-technology
The course covers the principles of
computer games technology and games
programming, emphasising the technical
principles in the development of games
system components.
Leader
Emphasis is placed on the tools and techniques used
for the development of games. Throughout the course
students gain a broad understanding of 3D modelling,
graphics and games programming (mainly C++). The
course looks at game development on the latest game
platforms such as XBox 360 and also addresses the
growing area of mobile phone game development.
Creating an IQ-driven 3D
puzzle/platform game in UDK
My project explores the combination of standard IQ tests and
popular puzzle/platform games. Traditionally, knowledge gained
from completing games (knowledge of the game’s workings
and mechanics, for example), is relative only to the game itself,
making this ‘temporary’ knowledge redundant anywhere else.
In creating this story-based experience, driven by IQ-style
challenges and puzzle rooms, the aim was to create a project
which is not only impressive and fun to play, but useful for
people’s everyday intellect.
Virtual health and safety
manual for an indoor
sports environment
A serious game application, powered by Unreal Engine
technology, that sports coaches of all levels can use to
highlight health and safety awareness in sport environments.
Health and safety and the assessment of risk are increasingly
important aspects of everyday life. This application allows the
user to be able to visualise hazards by navigating through the
sports hall.
Addressing global problems
using video games
in education
My project is an investigation into the application of video
games within education. The main focus of this application
would be as a teaching tool to allow for classroom
discussion. It will not be used as a means for teaching the
children the content of the subject, more as a tool used to
engage the students in discussing the end results of their
own play time with other classmates. The subjects covered
within this game are serious global problems.
Times Trial Racing:
Repetitive learning through
educational games
Times Trial Racing is an educational video game that aims
to improve the mathematic ability of a child using repetitive
learning. This project is an attempt at developing an
interactive prototype of an entertaining, addictive and fun
educational game. Times Trial Racing is developed using a
state-of-the-art game engine which has previously been used
to create some of the latest games in the video game industry.
A virtual interactive and
educational reconstruction
of Portchester Castle
My project involved using modern development tools,
such as the Unreal Development Kit, to create a virtual 3D
reconstruction of a heritage site for use as an educational
tool. The virtual monument acts as an interactive museum in
which users can explore the site to gain an understanding of
its uses and learn how and why it was made. To help with
this, users can see multiple versions of the castle, each set in
a different time period.
Interactive health and
safety guide for university
recording studios
Bournemouth University is home to an impressive selection of
sound and music recording studios. There are many rules and
regulations studio users must abide by in order for safe use as
there are always potential hazards.
This interactive studio guide will walk users around virtual
replicas of the facilities whilst giving advice on health & safety
and identifying potential hazards that could occur in the
studios, along with the correct method for dealing with them.
