Industrial Design
www.bournemouth.ac.uk/industrial-design
The BU Industrial Designer is an
engineer with an aesthetic sensibility,
a designer who creates the forms for
manufacturing through which we stage
tomorrow’s society.
Theo Roe
Course
Co-ordinator
These are graduates whose art form is technology
made to serve humanity. The final year design project
provides the opportunity to show how imagination
can stimulate markets as much as satisfy them. The
graduates emerge as a joint effort at shaping - for
as much as we shape the student, they also have a
hand in shaping us too. Their effort has contributed in
establishing the BA (Hons) Industrial Design course as
a force for the future.
Landmark for
Bournemouth beach
A gateway created to engage users and clear their mind of
everyday stresses, so they can use and appreciate the beach
as a place for taking time out.
As well as tourism, the beach is a place of romance. The
project recognises a current trend: Facebook official - the
ultimate definition of a college relationship - when one’s
Facebook profile says ‘ in a relationship’ (Urban Dictionary).
Freedom and personality have been forged into an organic
arrangement of style and form, which offers an open
discovery to personal comfort.
While playing host to the more unconventional aspects of
seating positions, this lounger makes the unconventional
seem less so.
Carriage Hotel
Transforming the way that long distance travel is viewed and
experienced, the Carriage Hotel will be aimed at families/
couples and long distance travellers.
It creates a calming interior with a different way of viewing
your surroundings by using the flow of power to demonstrate
how and where it is being used. The Carriage Hotel uses an
existing space to create a relaxing spacious area to sleep and
enjoy the passing landscape without feeling cramped into a
small area.
Interactive classical
music station
My project is a specialist audio station specifically for
classical music, fully immersing the user into the atmosphere
of conducting an orchestra. The aesthetic follows market
aspirations and styling associated with the genre of
classical music.
Interaction is in the form of a conductor’s baton. The four
speakers each represent one of the four instrumental groups
within an orchestra and are designed to be manoeuvred
around the user’s environment in the same way a conductor
would determine an orchestral layout.
Bicycle trailer
This product was designed to give cyclists the option of an
overnight stay without having to carry and pitch a tent, or
having to construct their route via hotels.
The product was designed to combine the ease and comfort
of a hotel, with the portability of a tent. It was designed to
keep hindrance of the cycling action to a minimum. The form
is designed looking at how different mediums affect different
forms in nature.
Aircraft seating
environment
Commercial aircraft interiors have maintained a similar format
for decades. This project set out to explore the possibilities.
My design focuses around the user experience; by enabling
the seats to rotate, personal space and sociability is
customisable to every passenger. The fixed shell seat creates
an elegant form whilst reducing weight. A particular focus
was to encompass the journey as a whole. Ambient lighting
and changing colours were researched to give the passenger a
truly immersive and comfortable journey.
Calla Lily Rocker
Many new parents struggle with the problem of getting their
child to settle into a comfortable night’s sleep. The Calla Lily
Rocker makes the transition from their pre-bedtime routine
to sleeping as smooth as possible by integrating a nursing
chair with a cot.
The rocking motion combined with the residual heat and
smells from the mother provides a constant environment and
familiarity that persuades the child to trust the cot and gives
the mother a memento of their bond together.
Fair Aid Shelter
The ‘Fair Aid Shelter’ is designed to offer services to those
who would otherwise be sleeping rough. Making use of
disused underground carriages, it aims to bring life back to
people and objects.
The simplicity reflects the user; they need to have their basic
needs fulfilled. In design, it aims to break away from many
of the underlying issues why people don’t use the shelters
currently available. It is about rebirth and opportunities for
forgotten and unwanted items.
Juicy Blocks
The aim of my project was to design a range of packaging
which could be used to create something else. With 15
million plastic bottles thrown away each day in the UK,
Aura: Portable illuminator
The idea behind Aura was to look at current torches and
portable lighting equipment and see what could be improved.
Aura combines the practicality of a torch and also
incorporates an ambient lighting feature which provides a
welcoming atmospheric light, allowing the user to feel secure
enough to socialise at night as if they were in the comfort of
their own home.
Aura is an extremely versatile and practical product which
has been designed with organic form to resemble nature.
Girlfriend Composter
Designing and creating enables us to engage in activity that
fundamentally shapes our world, influencing the processes
of change for our future. I am conscious that we seem to
be confined by boundaries, because we only see the
small vision.
Pushing these boundaries enables big visions such as the
Girlfriend Composter to be birthed. Predecessors influence
us, not that we should resemble them, we continue the
engagement by developing our own revolution of skills to
produce some of world’s greatest products.
YourSpace
YourSpace is a workspace designed for students and graduates
in creative industries. The driving force behind the design
was to create an interesting and unique form which surpasses
existing products within the same budget range. The outcome
solves limiting factors such as cost and space that often result
in uninspiring, low quality desks for this market.
The modular system has three stages, allowing the user to
select the size of the overall workspace. Moving between
stages is simple and efficient.
the diners’ experience of eating their food. Creating an
experience that is as important to the overall enjoyment
temperature in a way that traditional plates and
bowls cannot.
Youth Pavilion - Millennium
Park, Flitwick
A unique non-regulated public space designed to bring
together a separating community away from current social
networking activities. Existentially inspired; the Pavilion offers
alternative methods of seating & reflective surface techniques
built to enhance the user’s creative mind – a key requirement
for development and growth of the UK economy. The well-lit
secure environment provides opportunities to interact faceto-face
with other users, alongside its linear exterior form
contrasting a sinuously built interior; reflecting the Pavilion’s
endeavours of creating an astounding atmosphere within.
Velocity (VLCT)
Velocity (VLCT) is a sled that aims to break the general
impression that sledding is merely for youngsters. It
demonstrates an exciting organic streamline appearance,
inspired by automotive and birdlike features, representing
speed and gracefulness. Applying familiar technologies,
as seen in skis and snowboards, it offers a new range of
manoeuvres and experiences to attract the adult market.
Ultimately, Velocity sleds attempt to inspire a new type of
competitive winter sport, as exhilarating to observe as
to perform.
London transport system
This project, in essence, was to create a new form of public
transport for London. The core philosophy of the project was to
provoke cultural change in order to solve serious infrastructural
issues in London.
Inspiration for aesthetics and feel came from air, or more
specifically wind, something that has shaped the world we
live in, but also something that if harnessed, can allow us to
re-think the man-made world. In this case… How could
transport be?
through the streets, and the iconic styling typical of the
