July Volunteer of the Month
SHERRY THOMAS
Since joining D-RMSL in May
2011, Sherry has given over 700
hours working two days a week
in the Chemotherapy Room at
the Eugene M. & Christine E.
Lynn Cancer Institute (LCI) on
Tuesdays and Thursdays.
A graduate of the University of Florida,
she worked for the Florida Department of
Education for 25 years, before briefly working
for the Florida State Grant Center, then retiring
and moving to Boca Raton. Coming out of
retirement, she worked part-time for four
years at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in the
College of Education.
Sherry and her husband, Glenn, have both had
long careers in Florida education. After retiring
from FAU, Glenn is now Executive Director of
the Palm Beach County Education Commission.
Sherry gets high praise from the staff at The
Center for Hematology-Oncology, who would
like to clone her. Thank you, Sherry, for all you
do to support LCI, Boca Regional and D-RMSL.

Administrative Update
I am most pleased to announce that for the third year in a row Boca Raton
Regional Hospital has been cited as a top-ranked regional hospital in U.S.
News & World Report’s 2013-2014 listing of America’s Best Hospitals.
This year, Boca Regional is ranked 21st in Florida and 9th in the Miami-
Fort Lauderdale metro area. The magazine also rated the Hospital as
“High Performing” in the specialties of Gastroenterology/Gastrointestinal
Surgery and Gynecology.
This latest accolade now adds to a growing number of national, thirdparty
recognitions of our clinical capabilities and quality of care. As you
are aware, we received Healthgrades’ designation as a Distinguished
Hospital for Clinical Excellence for the ninth consecutive year and were
listed by that organization as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for the third year in row. This
consistency is strong testimony to the fact that excellence at Boca Regional is not an infrequent
occurrence but an ongoing habit.
All of you are to be congratulated on these notable achievements and I would like to thank our
volunteers for the tremendous contributions they have made to our success. I would also like to
specifically note our doctors, nurses and other professionals in gastroenterology, gastrointestinal
surgery and gynecology for their outstanding recognition.
No matter what our individual role, every one of us should find great pride in these Hospital honors.
We have, indeed, evolved from a capable community hospital into an advanced tertiary medical
center that is in the vanguard of medicine. Thank you for being a part of this marvelous transformation.

On Friday, May 10th, I had a lovely experience while driving the tram.
I’ve been driving it for more than four years and have made new friends,
reconnected with old ones and had many amazing experiences and
strange coincidences ... I even met the man who almost married my
wife-to-be 60 years ago. But, this one beats them all. Cheryl Carpenter
called me from the rotunda to come and pick up a “special” passenger
who needed a ride to the maternity unit. As I pulled up to the main
lobby, Cheryl came out, guiding the little lady. They explained that she
needed to get to the maternity unit to meet her new and 20th greatgrandchild.
Wow! This brought back memories of taking one young
and very pregnant lady to maternity who was 10 days “late.” To my
relief, she was just making an appointment to have a cesarean section
done the next day. I had visions of delivering a baby in the tram.

make the Hospital as wonderful and caring as it is. If one must be in
the hospital, this is the one to visit. The many volunteers are just as

51st Debbie-Rand
Anniversary Luncheon
Join us Wednesday, September 18, 2013 from 11:30am to 1:30pm
for a most enjoyable event to celebrate the Debbie-Rand Memorial
Service League's 51st Anniversary. The luncheon, held at Boca West
Country Club, begins with tropical punch and appetizers, and is
followed by a three-course lunch and fashion show, compliments of
the Debbie-Rand Thrift Shoppe and featuring our very own volunteers.
The island atmosphere will be enhanced by a Pan Paradise steel band
duo. Raffles and a grand prize drawing will conclude this enjoyable
event. Tickets are available at the Volunteer Office and Thrift Shoppe.

TAV Monthly Moment
CHRISTIE ESTRADA – INTERVIEWED BY JENNIFER ROSE
What made you interested in becoming a TAV at Boca Regional?
When I decided to enter into a career in medicine, I wanted to get my
feet wet right away and observe what life is like for both patients and
their caretakers. By becoming a TAV, I have been given a priceless,
although tiny, glimpse at life in the hospital at the age of 17.
How long have you been a TAV?
I have been a TAV for one year.
Which department(s) do you work in?
I have worked in both the Gift Shop and the Lab.
What is your favorite part about being a TAV at Boca Regional?
One of my favorite parts about being a TAV is the great opportunity
I have to interact with people and forge connections with both fellow
volunteers and employees, young and old alike.
What has been the highlight moment of being a TAV?
One of the most memorable moments I have had occurred when I was
volunteering in the gift shop. A woman had entered to look for "a last
gift" for her father who had just recently been transferred to hospice.
Although many of my friends have commented that working in the gift
shop was not a "real" part of the Hospital, being able to comfort and
help the woman let me see another important facet of the Hospital
community – the patient's family.

2013 American Heart
Association Palm Beach
Heart Walk
Boca Raton Regional Hospital is a sponsor of the 2013 American Heart
Association’s ® Palm Beach Heart Walk. This year’s Heart Walk will be
held on Saturday, September 28 at the Meyer Amphitheatre in West
Palm Beach. We will be providing free T-shirts to all registered walkers,
a welcoming continental breakfast, a post-event cookout and bus
transportation to and from the event.
Registered participants for the Heart Walk can pick up their T-shirts
in the Marketing Department located on the first floor of the Parker
Pavilion (745 building) beginning Wednesday, August 28. Please bring
your confirmation print-out with you or have your team captain notify

have the knowledge needed to keep themselves
and our patients safe. As part of this commitment,
we provide a monthly safety question in this
newsletter. These questions represent what a
volunteer may be asked by The Joint Commission
surveyor during a site visit.
Congratulations to Patrick Sheehan, who correctly
answered, “1) The number one safety measure
when using a wheelchair is making sure the brakes
are locked when a patient is getting into the chair.
2) When transporting a patient, you should enter
and exit elevators with the two big wheels (the back
