Giving a
Special Gift
Mandatory Flu Shots
Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s policy states that flu shots are mandatory
for all Hospital employees and volunteers. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention recommends annual influenza vaccination for
all individuals six months of age and older and mandatory healthcare
worker vaccination is endorsed by several national medical societies.
Is someone you know having a
special birthday or anniversary and
you don’t know what to give them?
Why not honor them by making a
contribution in their name to the
Debbie-Rand Memorial Service
League. Their name will appear in
the newsletter and you will receive
an in-kind donation for the amount
donated. In turn, if your donation
is $20 or more, the Boca Raton
Regional Hospital Foundation
will give you credit toward your
benefactor status.
You may also wish to remember
a loved one or friend that may
be deceased. What better way to
memorialize them.
Remember, for the person who
has everything, a gift to the Debbie-
Rand Memorial Service League
is priceless!
Volunteers who are unable to get a flu shot for religious or medical
reasons must complete an exemption form, which can be obtained in
the Volunteer Office. All volunteers must provide proof of receiving
a flu shot no earlier than August 2013 or complete an exemption
form. Volunteers who work in patient care areas and are granted an
exemption will be required to wear a mask while performing their
duties throughout the entire flu season (December 1 through March 31).
Flu shots are covered by Medicare and most health insurers and are
generally available at physician’s offices and most pharmacies. Shots
will be administered at the Hospital on a limited basis for volunteers
who are unable to obtain them elsewhere. All volunteers must submit
to the Volunteer Office either proof of receiving a current flu shot or a
signed exemption form no later than December 1, 2013.
Upon submission of proof of receiving the flu shot, volunteers will have
a designation sticker affixed to their hospital identification badge.
Thank you for your cooperation in adhering to this important policy.
Our Shining Stars
From a Patient's Family Member
There was a volunteer on the fourth floor; his name is Steven. When
my mom told him about her upcoming procedure he gave her hope
and really lifted her spirits. He checked in on her often, even asking if
any of us wanted juice or ice cream brought to my mom’s room while
we visited with her. When we saw him in the hallways, he would always
inquire as to how she was doing. Steven was so calming and caring.
From a Patient's Family Member
The Volunteers! Oh my goodness, the volunteers! I could never write
a letter about your wonderful Hospital, without talking about the
volunteers who offer their time to the care of your patients.
Do you know of or have you witnessed a volunteer going above and
beyond to help a patient? Or maybe someone who is simply deserving
of recognition for displaying an exceptional level of volunteerism? If
so, let us know and we will feature them in an upcoming issue.
TAV Monthly Moment
LETTER FROM A BOCA REGIONAL EMPLOYEE
I am writing in regards to a volunteer, Alexandra Silverman. I admire the
selflessness and dedication volunteers provide. However, Alexandra
has shown her love for people on duty, as well as off duty.
I was in the cafeteria and she was waiting in line to order food and saw
an elderly couple struggling to bring their food to the table, so she got
out of line to help them and guide them to a table. They expressed such
gratitude for her and she thanked the couple with a smile on her face. In
moments like these, you become extremely thankful for people who are
always willing to give while expecting nothing in return.
Sincerely,
Nicole Bracciale
Safety Matters: Volunteer Trivia
D-RMSL is committed to ensuring our volunteers have
the knowledge needed to keep themselves and our
patients safe. As part of this commitment, we provide
a monthly safety question in this newsletter. These
questions represent what a volunteer may be asked
by The Joint Commission surveyor during a site visit.
Congratulations to Heather Jurist, who correctly
answered, “There are no designated smoking areas
on Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s campus. In order
to smoke a cigarette, a person needs to leave the
Hospital’s property.” See Aimee Yahn-Carmichael for
your prize!
561.955.4100
This month’s trivia has two parts. 1) Volunteers may
lift/move patients into or out of wheelchairs as part
of the volunteer service. True or False? 2) When
transporting a patient to their room, you must
immediately notify the staff of the patient’s arrival
and not leave them unattended until a staff member
has assumed responsibility for the patient. True
or False? The first person to email Aimee at ayahncarmichael@brrh.com,
will win a pair of Regal VIP
Movie Tickets. Best of luck!
