Paul has earned over 400 hours
working in Volunteer Services.
Born in England, she moved to
the U.S. in 1963 and finally to
industry. She started as a flight attendant in
England, and over the years, was promoted
to management positions with various airlines
including Pan Am, El Al and Delta. After retiring,
she worked part-time for 11 years at the City of
Boca Raton’s Tennis Center. Now fully retired,
she no longer plays tennis but enjoys golf,
the board of her home owner’s association for
eight years, currently as Secretary. She is also
a member of the auxiliary at FAU’s Louis and
Teenage Volunteer Social
Aimee Yahn-Carmichael and Teenage Volunteer (TAV) Chair for the event, Jennifer Rose, turned the Bistro at Boca into a tropical
paradise for the TAV Social, held on June 7. Hosted by the Debbie-Rand Board of Trustees, 17 TAVs braved pouring rain to
attend the event and share tales, pizza and games. A limbo competition weeded out the TAVs until only Alex Crossley and new
volunteer Mariani Weinstein were left. Enjoyed by all, the TAVs attending requested that the event be held on an annual basis.
TAV Monthly Moment
BELLA POLLEY – INTERVIEWED BY JENNIFER ROSE
What made you interested in becoming a TAV at Boca Regional?
Three years ago, I was in and out of the Hospital for various health
reasons. I had many different procedures to help make me better and
my family and I traveled throughout the country to receive the best care
possible. I am not fond of IVs. In order for the nurse to actually place
one, someone had to distract me. Usually this person was a volunteer.
After I recovered, I realized I wanted to be the person that helps
patients who are scared. Boca Regional was the perfect opportunity for
me, and I am so grateful that I decided to become a TAV.
How long have you been a TAV?
I have been a TAV at Boca Raton Regional Hospital since October
2011, my freshman year of high school.
Which department(s) do you work in?
I work Saturday mornings in IV Therapy, NSA 7th floor. Previously I
worked at the Thrift Shoppe and Volunteer Services.
What is your favorite part about being a TAV at Boca Regional?
I get to see the patients' smiling faces every weekend and know that the
work I am doing is making a difference. In my department, IV Therapy,
many of our patients come for weeks or months at a time. I am able to
build a relationship with them as well as their families. It is nice for me
to know that they consider me a familiar face each weekend and that I
ease their worries when they see me.
What has been the highlight moment of being a TAV?
Last year, there was a patient that was with my department for many
months. Every Saturday, he would arrive, coffee in hand and his wife
by his side. We instantly had a connection and he did not dread going
to the Hospital once a week because he knew I was there. On the
patient's last day he told me that I truly made a difference in his life
and he was so grateful that I was there to talk to him and comfort him.
It's experiences like this that make volunteering so wonderful for me!
Pet Therapy Program
Recently the program lost one of its own members, Casey. A 15 year
old toy/miniature poodle, also known as a party poodle because of her
unique color markings, was a hard-working volunteer who specialized
in home visits and special events. She participated in many events
sponsored by Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League and was the
bumble bee in the Activities Committee’s 2011 Haunted House at
Halloween. She will be greatly missed by her owners, Tom and Carol
DeCicco, and her co-volunteer therapy dogs Charley, Kelly and Harris.
Our Shining Stars
From Larry Académie française
On Friday, May 10th, I had a lovely experience while driving the tram.
I’ve been driving it for more than four years and have made new friends,
reconnected with old ones and had many amazing experiences and
strange coincidences ... I even met the man who almost married my
wife-to-be 60 years ago. But, this one beats them all. Cheryl Carpenter
called me from the rotunda to come and pick up a “special” passenger
who needed a ride to the maternity unit. As I pulled up to the main
lobby, Cheryl came out, guiding the little lady. They explained that she
needed to get to the maternity unit to meet her new and 20th greatgrandchild.
Wow! This brought back memories of taking one young
and very pregnant lady to maternity who was 10 days “late.” To my
relief, she was just making an appointment to have a cesarean section
done the next day. I had visions of delivering a baby in the tram.
Do you know of or have you witnessed a volunteer going above and
beyond to help a patient? Or maybe someone who is simply deserving
of recognition for displaying an exceptional level of volunteerism? If
so, let us know and we will feature them in an upcoming issue.
Safety Matters: Volunteer Trivia
D-RMSL is committed to ensuring our volunteers
have the knowledge needed to keep themselves
and our patients safe. As part of this commitment,
we provide a monthly safety question in this
newsletter. These questions represent what a
volunteer may be asked by The Joint Commission
surveyor during a site visit.
Congratulations to Alice Duquette, who correctly
answered, “False. Volunteers may lift/move patients
or heavy objects as part of their volunteer service.”
See Aimee Yahn-Carmichael for your prize!
561.955.4100
This month’s trivia is about wheelchair safety and
has two parts. 1) What is the number one safety
measure when using a wheelchair? 2) When
transporting a patient, you should enter and
exit elevators with which wheels entering first?
Hint: The answers can be found in your Volunteer
Guide. The first person to email Aimee at ayahncarmichael@brrh.com,
will win a pair of Regal VIP
Movie Tickets. Best of luck!
