Jewish Home Family
Energy, Insight and Planning Help Us Meet our Goals
The strength of all 501 (c)(3)’s is the combination of lay
leadership and professional staff and their ability
to understand and carry out the strategic goals of the
organization together. The Jewish Home has a history of
growth and change since 1915 and has had the luxury
of longevity of both partners.
In 1998 we were fortunate to have Ary Freilich join the
Board of JHRC as Secretary. Over the next fourteen years
Ary continued as a member of our Boards of Directors
joining Jewish Home at Rockleigh’s in 2000, and becoming
Vice President in 2002. Ary served as the President
of JHR from 2004 – 2009. Those of you who were part of
our extended family during these years have a sense of
the effort which went into planning, building and filling
JHR while staying financially solvent. Surrounded by
many dedicated lay people with decades of devotion to
the needs of the Jewish community was helpful and
with these resources, Ary led JHR to becoming a viable
organization in a position to move forward despite all
the challenges of the healthcare field, especially in
regard to Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement. Were
these challenges not enough, we were simultaneously
planning for the development of the Jewish Home
Assisted Living facility and for the restructuring of the
Jewish Home entity through the development of the
Jewish Home Family. It was a natural that Ary moved
into the Chairmanship of Jewish Home Family in 2009,
when I became the President of
this new entity. This put us in the
position to advance as the Jewish
Home has done so many times
since 1915.
I was and remain impressed with the energy and insight
that Ary and his Board of Directors showed during this
period. On a personal note, I was privileged to have
the opportunity to be Ary’s partner during this time. His
intellect, friendship and communication are outstanding
and one of the reasons that professionals remain with
an organization for over 40 years.
We are pleased to report that
strategic planning has never taken
a back seat at the Jewish Home…
In 2009, the effort continued to look at how the Jewish
Home could meet the changing needs of the elderly
in our community and during this time we established
our newest entity, Jewish Home at Home. The
challenges during this time were two fold: find new lay
people in our communities to develop the enthusiasm
that so many of our current Board members exhibit
daily, and have them join the Jewish Home team, as well
as withstand the economic environment
that has existed during
Ary’s leadership years. While the
challenges were met, they are far
from finished products.
Charles P. Berkowitz Garden Dedication
We are pleased to report that strategic planning has
never taken a back seat at the Jewish Home as we have
been financially responsible and funding has been set
aside for the replacement of aging equipment in both
of our facilities. Plans have been developed to allow us
to continue to grow both in Rockleigh and in River Vale.
A home for the Jewish Home Family is in the wings
as is the expansion of the JHAL facility to develop more
space to improve the quality of life for their population.
Budgetary planning was put in place last year to enable
the Foundation and the financial office of the Jewish
Home Family to bring on the staff necessary to
accomplish both goals. While the Jewish Home at Home
is growing, it remains our biggest challenge as we are
seeing more and more elderly with needs but not the
assets to meet these needs. While these types of services
are being encouraged by all levels of government, the
funding for same still lags behind. Our efforts with
Jewish Home at Home from the beginning have
prepared for 20% charitable care but the needs are
greater. To date, we have been approaching Charitable
Foundations in our communities for additional support
to meet these additional needs, as well as the Jewish
Federation of Northern NJ and have been able to receive
some additional funding in the past year. This remains
the biggest challenge going forward.
Our ability to continue to meet the changing needs of our
elderly as the Jewish Home has in the past, has been
through the efforts of both lay leadership and professional
staff, and the community has been fortunate to have
had the efforts of wonderful people such as Ary Freilich,
to help the Jewish Home to move forward.
Eli Ungar, Chairman
Jewish Home Family
“Affection and Care for the Old…
are the True Gold Mines of a Culture.” — Abraham Joshua Heschel
Tonight we celebrate two important milestones, and
issue one heartfelt thank you. The tenth anniversary of
the opening of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, and the
fifth anniversary of the Jewish Home Assisted Living,
together mark enduring gifts made by people in this
room to the elderly in our community.
Golda Meir joked that “old age is like a plane flying
through a storm. Once you’re aboard, there’s nothing
you can do.” We respectfully disagree. Through the hard
work and thoughtful planning of Chuck Berkowitz, Sunni
Herman, Lauren Levant, Melanie Cohen and countless
…Jewish Home Family both
represents and provides stability,
permanence and excellent care
to our seniors.
others, the Jewish Home Family offers a dignified and
comprehensive approach to aging. Each day, in ways
both big and small, the hundreds of employees of the
Jewish Home Family honor our tradition of caring with
love for our elderly. In the words of Abraham Joshua
Heschel, “Even tyrants and dictators make a point of
being fond of children. But the affection and care for the
old… are the true gold mines of a culture.”
The Jewish Home at Rockleigh, Jewish Home Assisted
Living, and Jewish Home at Home, are indeed gold
mines. In today’s uncertain health care environment, the
Jewish Home Family both represents and provides
L-R: Robert Peckar, President, Jewish Home at Home;
David Shap, President, Jewish Home Foundation;
Myrna Block, President, Jewish Home at Rockleigh;
Wilson Aboudi, President, Jewish Home Assisted Living;
Eli Ungar, Chairman, Jewish Home Family
stability, permanence and excellent care to our seniors.
These wonderful milestones inspire us to continue
looking forward and investing in new programs
and ideas that will help us remain on the forefront of
excellence.
We come here tonight to give particular thanks to
Ary Freilich, whose vision, determination, skill and humor
enabled us to evolve from a nursing home and an
assisted living facility into an integrated Jewish Home
Family, in the best sense of the word. Ary infused our
organization with a quest for excellence, and reminded
us time and again how the true definition of success is
measured not in dollars and cents but in the extent
to which we enable our residents to lead dignified, rich,
fulfilling lives.
In the words of our sages: “According to the effort is the
reward.” Thank you, Ary.
David A. Sharp, President
Jewish Home Foundation
Securing Our Financial Future
Tonight we are honoring Ary Freilich, an extraordinary
person who has reshaped our Jewish Homes into a
dynamic organization, well-positioned to meet the
challenges of our community’s future. Ary is a true
visionary who has dedicated the last ten years to refining
our focus, building our boards and providing us with
outstanding leadership. He is a wonderful role model
and we thank him for all of his efforts.
We also thank all of you, our loyal and generous donors,
for your exceptional support. During the past year we
again surpassed our previous fundraising efforts.
In fact, our signature fundraising program, the Boneh
Olam Annual Giving Program has continued to grow
year after year. This program, which started with only 19
participating families in 2003 has grown to over 140
participants in 2012. YOU — a generous community —
has provided over $1.181 Million in philanthropic
support through this program in 2012 alone… and over
$8.35 Million over the course of the last ten years.
Why is the success of our Foundation’s fundraising
program so critical?
• Your generosity filters down and is directed into our
operating budgets so we can benefit residents each
and every day and offer our services to those less
fortunate who might not otherwise be able to afford
the care they so badly need, either in our facilities or in
their own homes…
• It means hiring the best of the best with regard to our
professional staff because nothing less will do…
• It means offering extensive recreational programming
and providing excellence in nursing with ratios of
residents to staff above state averages…
What this all translates into is being able to look around,
each one of us, and see the smiles, happiness and
contentment of seniors enjoying every aspect of their
lives to the fullest extent possible.
While our Jewish Home Foundation has continually
grown to meet the growing demands of the community,
we recognize that there are many challenges that
confront us, particularly as social programs such as
Medicare and Medicaid succumb to unprecedented
pressure. The long-term viability of these social cornerstones
is in peril. Though our Jewish Home Foundation
may have a track record of success in filling the annual
budgetary needs of the Jewish Home at Home, Jewish
Home Assisted Living and Jewish Home at Rockleigh,
our organization currently doesn’t have sufficient financial
resources to stem the consequences of disruptions
in these programs.
The financial responsibility to prepare ourselves for the
future falls on our shoulders. As such, while the Jewish
Home Foundation will continue its efforts to meet its
annual responsibilities, we will embark this coming year
on focusing to secure the financial security of the Jewish
Home Family in the future. We know that we will be able
to count on a community that has always had a strong
vision of the future, and that we will be to achieve this
together.
We look forward to working together to achieve these
mutual objectives.
Boneh Olam Builders of the World
Melanie S. Cohen, CFRE,
Executive Director
Jewish Home Foundation
A Blueprint for
Community Support
The mission of the Jewish Home Foundation (JHF) is to
provide the financial wherewithal to all the Jewish Home
Family entities, enabling them to deliver the necessary
health care, educational, and life enriching care and
programming to seniors and elderly in our community.
While this daunting task is accomplished in many ways,
the Foundation’s Boneh Olam Annual Giving Program has
become the cornerstone of the annual fundraising effort,
as the Foundation continues to play a major role in supporting
the critical daily financial needs of these entities.
At its inception in 2003, 19 families contributed a total of
$226,000. In this year, 2012, the program grew to 142
families donating a praiseworthy $1,181,500. Over its nine
year history, the program has provided $8,352,556
in funding.
Boneh Olam — Builders of the World was developed as a
blueprint for supporters of the Homes, enabling donors
to respond to a once-a-year appeal for their support while
eliminating further solicitations throughout the year. This
program is designed with the donor in mind. Participation
in any one of the nine “levels of giving” allows the donor
to participate in each of the Foundation’s five major
fundraising events during the year — Patron Calendar,
Passover/New Year Card Program, Golf and Tennis Outing,
Ad Journal and Gala. Donors are recognized in all Jewish
Home publications, as well as in JHR’s entrance lobby.
These annual once-a-year gifts help position the Foundation
to have the wherewithal to play an integral part in
allowing the Jewish Homes to carry forward the tradition
of honoring our elderly.
We thank each and every one of our “Builders of the World”
for their beneficence, and invite others in the community
to participate in this wonderful opportunity to make a
difference. The program is launched each November for
the fiscal year beginning the following January 1.
Brandy Stefanco, Chief Financial Officer
Jewish Home Family
Financial Challenges
During 2011, the Jewish Home at Rockleigh was hit
with two significant funding cuts. Effective July 1, 2011,
Medicaid cut reimbursement to skilled nursing facilities
and in October 2011, we were also hit with cuts in our
Medicare reimbursement. These funding cuts provided
the catalyst for Jewish Home Family to re-evaluate the
current financial position of all operations and resulted
in a more meaningful 2012 budget process.
Jewish Home at Rockleigh (JHR)
In spite of the funding cuts, which we will feel the full
impact of in 2012, JHR experienced another positive
year in 2011. Our positive bottom line was attributed to
maintaining a high occupancy rate in the nursing facility,
averaging 177 residents per day, which is a 98% occupancy
rate. In addition, the facility had a strong Medicare
Part-A case mix in the facility.
Jewish Home Assisted Living (JHAL)
JHAL ended the 2011 operating year with 99 residents
who occupied 95 apartments, which is a 90% occupancy
rate. JHAL exceeded their budget projections and in
February 2011, the board voted to reduce debt by
$1,200,000.
In March 2012, the board approved the use of an
additional $1,000,000 of operational cash flow to further
reduce the mortgage on the facility. Since April 2008,
JHAL has made $990,000 in scheduled amortization and
$2,200,000 in accelerated payments decreasing our
current mortgage obligation to $9,643,000.
Jewish Home at Home (JH@H)
In 2011, The Gallen Adult Day Health Care (GADHC) and
the Kosher Meals programs were moved from the JHR
operations and into Jewish Home at Home. The Jewish
Home Foundation (JHF) was instrumental in providing
operational support for programming in 2011 and
JHF provided the resources for the purchase of a new
transportation van. Through our community service
partnerships, we began building a subsidy reserve that
has allowed us to offer scholarships to eligible participants
in our GADHC, provided holiday meals for home
bound elderly and moving into 2012 allows us to offer
subsidized geriatric care management services.
Jewish Home Family
With the growth and increasingly complex nature of our
organization, the roles of the Finance and Investment
Committee have now been combined under the
oversight of the Jewish Home Family. This newly redesigned
committee will assist the operating entities
with profit and loss analysis, budget review and investment
planning.
In 2012, the Finance Office added an additional staff
member to assist with the daily functions of the
organization. As our programs and staffing continue to
expand, there is a need for additional space to house
the Jewish Home Family, Jewish Home Foundation
and Jewish Home at Home operations. This project will
be a goal of the organization moving into the 2013
budget year.
Due to the growth and population of JHAL, the need
for additional common space, such as dining and
recreational facilities, is currently being evaluated.
Myrna Block, President
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
The “Home” with a “Heart”
We thank Ary Freilich for his leadership. He has shown
enormous ability to solve problems with intelligence
and compassion. The happiness of our residents was
always his top priority. His vision and implementation of
the new reorganization will allow us to grow and service
our community for years to come. He has left the organization
strong and poised for success.
The Jewish Home is a truly amazing place and it keeps
getting better. The “Big Picture” is that this organization
has a HEART, is full of energy and always strives to bring
smiles to the faces of our residents. We provide excellent
nursing and medical care, keep residents active both
mentally and spiritually and treat each resident as an
individual. How is this accomplished?
Primarily our staff! The commitment to the highest
standards begins at the top. For many years, Chuck
Berkowitz set a high standard. This commitment continues
today with our Executive Vice President Sunni Herman
and our staff — from nursing to recreation, food services
to housekeeping — all of whom add their own special
touch of commitment and compassion, always
maintaining the welfare of the residents as a top priority.
Some accomplishments this year: Music, music everywhere:
residents put on an amazing musical concert that
was so superior they performed it again for the seniors
at the JCC! Ipads were used with dementia residents
to introduce individualized music. The result was amazing:
residents with dementia, upon hearing the music,
opened their eyes and sang along!
We have started a Young Leadership
group that is made up of
R U S S B E R R IE HOME FOR J EWISH LIVING
dynamic and caring younger members of our community.
They are our future leaders and are planning exciting
events to bring young people into our Home.
Dietary Services, long outsourced, was brought in-house
and new personnel hired. The results are palpable.
Residents are very pleased with the new menus, the
music played during mealtime and the special touches
such as white tablecloths on Shabbat. Residents are
walked to their tables to eat in a chair, instead of
their wheel chairs, which shows a special commitment
to their dignity.
Bob Bardach, our new Assistant Administrator, began in
July and jumped in with the oversight of the implementation
of Electronic Medical Records. All staff will be
involved in the process of bringing JHR to the next
technical level of medical recordkeeping.
Our residents keep learning! Jewish Home University
was well attended and culminated with a graduation
with residents in caps, gowns and diplomas. Fabulous!
They also learned computer skills from Yavneh students
— especially how to “shop at home”.
JHR is “on fire” with enthusiasm and excitement. So
many new programs! So many exciting ideas! A fabulous
compassionate and kind staff! Each resident is treated
with dignity and respect!
I am so proud to be associated with the Jewish Home at
Rockleigh — one of the premiere nursing facilities in the
country — and so should each
donor, volunteer and staff member.
Sunni Herman, Executive Vice President
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
Connections
Kesher. Connection. Every day at the Jewish Home at
Rockleigh we make lasting connections. We have an
extremely strong, dedicated staff and we are pleased to
have added Bob Bardach to our administrative team, a
caring, creative individual who has quickly bonded with
residents, staff and families.
Our residents connect. Whether they are assembling a
blanket to give to the organization Sharsheret or they
volunteer in the Gift Shop, they find meaningful ways to
fill their days. The Executive Committee of our Resident
Council, the “machers” in the building, continue to meet
monthly and have helped form our Men’s Club and
the Jersey Girls. A highlight of the year was Syril Rubin
hosting a delicious luncheon for our residents in her
home. Newly conducted satisfaction surveys of our long
term residents have helped further focus us on ways to
connect our residents.
…interdisciplinary programs
strengthen the relationships among
the staff and the residents.
A first annual, hugely successful, Employee Health and
Benefit Fair, sponsored by Ronnie Aroesty and the Herb
Seid Endowment, helped link staff with various health
resources available to them. Staff connections were
enhanced through participation in the building-wide
Purim masquerade contest. Nursing helped facilitate
a new iPod music program and both the recreation staff
and our social workers have been helping residents during
mealtimes. These interdisciplinary programs strengthen
the relationships among the staff and the residents.
Our staff is busy working on implementation of electronic
medical records which shall help further enhance
communication and connectivity to local hospitals.
Our association with our families often does not end
when a loved one no longer lives at the Home. They can
be found chatting in Carl’s Place, enjoying the musical
programs, visiting with residents and becoming volunteers
and lay leaders. Our family has become their family
and so they stay connected.
Our connection to the community remains quite strong.
Always mindful of the safety of our residents, we
conducted a tabletop evacuation drill in collaboration
with the local and regional fire, police, and ambulance
departments. We hosted a cardiac assessment program
for the community presented by Englewood Hospital’s
EMS Department entitled, “Listen to Your Heart.” With
funding from the Maurice Levy Memorial Nursing Fund,
we opened our doors to staff from other nursing homes
to learn about the new Department of Health Survey
process. We have had many guest lecturers from
the community at our newly formed Jewish Home
University. In addition to our regularly scheduled groups
who entertain, the Kaplen JCC School of Performing Arts
and the Thurnauer School of Music programs performed
several times for our residents. The icing on the cake was
when our residents performed the play “Broadway
Melodies…A World Cruise” for the seniors at the JCC.
We look forward to many future joint programming
activities.
The American designer, Charles Eames once said
“Eventually everything connects — people, ideas,
objects. The quality of the connections is the key to
quality, per se.” Connections made at the Jewish Home
at Rockleigh increase our quality of care every day.
Wilson Aboudi, President
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Reaching the Next Level of Care and Comfort
.JHAL is proud to be a part of the Jewish Home Family
and consider ourselves the second generation of this
charitable endeavor — those who follow our founding
dreamers and builders. As the second generation we
also have our dreams to build and expand the Jewish
Home Family. In additions to these dreams, the second
generation now has the obligation to operate and
maintain the Jewish Home Assisted Living’s magnificent
facility, and to attain even higher standards than those
previously reached.
Toward this end, Jewish Home Assisted Living has made
many improvements this past year: Installation of a
satellite connection that enables our residents to participate
in live 92 Street Y programs, installation of an
Outdoor Fitness Trail Health System enabling residents
to exercise, improvements to the washing machine
facilities enabling residents to be more independent, the
purchase of a van for transporting our residents to
personal appointments, improved lighting in event of
a power failure for the safety of our residents, the
development of an intern program with local colleges
bringing many younger visitors into our building and
the availability of enhanced hearing impairment
equipment to increase participation and enjoyment of
our residents during lectures and movies. Each one
bring us a step closer to attaining the next level of care
and comfort for our residents.
This past June 24th, Jewish Home Assisted Living
celebrated its Fifth Anniversary with 100 residents and
family members in attendance. At this celebration, JHAL
acknowledged 28 dedicated employees who have
worked at the Home for the past five years. These are
the employees that prepare the food and serve our
residents, our aids that assist and care for residents daily,
the maintenance staff that cleans and maintains the
building and the recreational personnel that provide
entertainment, activities and programming.
All this and more could not be accomplished without
our able and dedicated administrative staff lead by
Executive Director Lauren Levant, Director of Sales and
Marketing John Albanese, Director of Health Care Services
Risa Kory, Director of Activities and Volunteer Services
Julie Cochrane, Director of Social Services Nancy Ames,
Director of Food Services Jean Duroseau, Director of
Engineering Ron Espanola, Business Office Manager
Chris Sarvis, and all the dedicated employees of Jewish
Home Assisted Living that better the lives of our seniors
each and every day.
Lauren Levant, CALA, Executive Director
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Marking Five Years and Continuing to Grow
As Jewish Home Assisted Living (JHAL) enters its sixth
year of operation, census continues to be the primary
focus. Through aggressive marketing campaigns, new
brochures and a re-designed web site, JHAL strives to
be on the cutting edge. Due to these efforts and the
reputation for outstanding care, JHAL continues to be
ahead of the average national assisted living census rate.
This past June, the residents, family members and staff
of JHAL joined together to celebrate the Fifth Anniversary
of JHAL opening our doors to serve the communities of
Bergen, Passaic and Rockland Counties.
By mid-year, JHAL provided services to at least 250
senior citizens. We are honored that eight of our original
residents continue to call JHAL “HOME” as they are
aging in place with dignity.
In addition to celebrating our residents, we also
celebrated with 28 employees who have been with us
since the first six months of opening. With the low turn
over of staff it’s no wonder that JHAL has such a strong
reputation within the community.
While JHAL offers programming seven days a week,
this year included some unique opportunities for the
residents to enjoy. In March, the JHAL community
joined together for a kick off celebration embarking
on a partnership with the 92nd Street Y and viewed a
satellite program featuring President Shimon Perez.
The community also had the pleasure of participating in
programs with Sandra Day O’Connor, Alan Alda and Elie
Wiesel. Residents are able to participate in the program
at least twice a month. During the course of the year,
many family members and members of the outside
community joined the residents in the viewings.
At the same time, the facility introduced a Hearing
Enhancement System to aid those residents who are
hearing impaired. JHAL is the first assisted living
community in Bergen County to offer this system. In a
very short time we saw an increase in participation
of our residents attending lectures, movies, religious
services and much more!
In July we also installed a LifeTrail Fitness System on the
grounds. JHAL now has three stations offering nine
different exercises which are supervised by a physical
therapist, restorative care aides and activity staff. LifeTrail
is designed for seniors with a focus on functional fitness.
The Hearing Enhancement
System and the
LifeTrail System were
opportunities that could
not have been made
available without the
very generous donation
from a previous family
member of JHAL.
In the summer of 2012, through the generosity of
another supporter, the JHAL community was afforded
the opportunity to create a Jewish Cultural Library. This
library showcases Judaic novels and Jewish artwork.
Those residents who are visually impaired are able to
read utilizing an auto magnifier.
Mazel Tov to all those involved — from board to
community members, residents and family members,
administrative and staff members — for working to
make Jewish Home Assisted Living a special place where
our loved ones can truly say they are “Home.”
Robert Peckar, President
Jewish Home at Home
Continuing to Meet the Challenges
of Seniors Living at Home
2012 has been an exciting year for Jewish Home at
Home (JH@H). In this second year of our existence, we
developed our core concept into a reality. The concept
was that among our elder community members are a
significant number who wish to remain in their homes
even though they may have physical, medical, mental
or other challenges that make it very difficult for them
to do so. So, too, was the concept that the families of
these elder citizens often find themselves caught in
a true dilemma of wanting to keep their parents at
home safe and sound but not having the knowledge
or expertise to do so. JH@H was founded to provide
professionally certified Geriatric Care Management
services that can create a safe and medically sound
environment in which many of our elder citizens can
indeed remain in their homes.
The steady increase in our client inquiries in 2012 is
evidence of a startling success for such a new venture.
Many organizations that have been in the geriatric care
management business for years do not have many more
clients than JH@H. However, the Board believes that
there are many, many more elderly members of our
community who would benefit from a geriatric care
management assessment conducted by our professionally
certified staff. With the benefit of that assessment, JH@H
is able to work with the client or their family to provide,
under JH@H auspices, oversight home aides, physical
therapy at home, doctor visits at home if necessary,
alterations to the home to allow safe mobility, access to
emergency alert systems and automated medication
dispensers, volunteer visits, access to mental health
professionals from within the organized Jewish community,
food delivery, enrollment in adult day care at our
Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center for those in need
of special day care or at the JCC for those able to enjoy
their programs, transportation for everyday needs — the
list goes on and on.
The Board believes that its challenges for the upcoming
year are the following:
1. To continue to bring awareness of JH@H to our entire
community, starting with the Jewish community and
broadening it to the greater community.
2. To bring the highest level of quality Geriatric Care
Management to our clients.
3. To operate in a financially self-supporting manner
through our charges to clients and contributions from
our vendors.
4. To build upon the generous contributions of The
Russell Berrie Foundation, The Henry and MarilynTaub
Foundation and Jewish Federation of Northern NJ and
raise additional contributions so that JH@H is able to
provide basic services to those unable to afford them.
5. To increase the population of elder citizens who use
our outstanding Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center.
6. To continue to provide Kosher Meals on Wheels to
those who require that service in coordination with
other Jewish community agencies.
We look forward to meeting all these challenges.
Susan Lilly, LSW, C-ASWCM, Director of Geriatric Care Management
Jewish Home at Home
The Jewish Home at Home in Action
Fulfilling Its Mission
The Jewish Home at Home (JH@H) is designed to help
the elderly and their families meet the challenges of
aging in one’s own home. It allows members of the
community to gain peace of mind knowing that their
loved one’s care is based upon professional advice, by a
certified geriatric care manager, tailored to his or her
specific needs and delivered in a dignified, respectful
and compassionate manner. JH@H offers a geriatric assessment
which identifies the unique care needs of the
senior and provides a list of recommendations (plan of
care) that addresses those needs. We can implement,
coordinate and monitor the services and provide
education and emotional support to both the senior and
the family members. JH@H, with its network of service
providers, can offer whatever is needed to allow the
senior to remain at home: home health care, medication
management, nursing care, personal emergency
response system (medical alert), home modification,
adult day programming, rehabilitation services, counseling,
escort and transportation to appointments. We also
offer volunteers who are carefully matched with JH@H
seniors. Volunteers make home visits, escort seniors to
appointments or to shop, take walks, play scrabble,
make friendly telephone calls and much more.
Volunteers build relationships that reconnect seniors to
the community and reduce a sense of isolation that is
often experienced by older adults.
Since January 2011, the number of people contacting the
JH@H and the number of clients we have worked with
has steadily increased. By the second quarter of 2012 we
exceeded our annual census for 2011!
A major factor contributing to this growth is our
outreach efforts. We worked with our Board and
community leaders to publicize the JH@H. We met with
JFNNJ, Jewish communal agency staff, synagogue lay
leaders, Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish
Women, Women’s Philanthropy, sisterhood groups and
directly with seniors at their clubs and centers. We
educated community groups about the needs of seniors
who wish to age at home and provided encouragement
that services are available to make this possible. JH@H
began an advertising campaign that ran in the Jewish
Standard and the local newspapers during the winter
and spring.
Under the leadership of Chuck
Berkowitz, President and CEO of
the Jewish Home Family and
Bob Peckar, Board President,
JH@H will build on this success
in the coming year.
JH@H is a fee for service program. However, in keeping
with the Jewish Home’s 97-year tradition of caring
for seniors with less means, the Jewish Home Family
Board authorized that revenue is set aside so 20% of the
client base meeting defined eligibility criteria can receive
subsidized services. In addition, the subsidy program has
been supported by grants from Jewish Federation of
Northern NJ, the Russell Berrie Foundation and the
Henry and Marilyn Taub Foundation.
Gallen Adult Day Health Care
Milestones: A Big Part of the Gallen Adult Day
Health Care Program
Milestones are a continuous part of the fabric of the
Gallen Adult Day Health Care program. Not only are we
thrilled to be celebrating our Tenth Anniversary along
with the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, but we seize the
opportunity to celebrate significant milestones in the
lives of our participants. In the last year, we celebrated
the 100th birthday of two of our participants and just
recently, a couple chose the Center as a venue to
celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with family
and friends because the day program has become a
focal point in their life.
The Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center provides
physical, emotional, cognitive and social support to its
participants in a safe, structured setting through a team
of skilled professionals. The Center offers the opportunity
for seniors to remain in their home, while providing
them support on a number of different fronts. The services
provided include: transportation, medical monitoring,
social services, dietary evaluations and recreational
programming meeting everyone’s level of cognitive
functioning.
Another grant from NJ Transit will provide us with two
new buses to transport seniors to and from our program
as well as enhance the Bergen County Assisted
Transportation Program. To add an exciting new dimension
to our programming, we are exploring funding
opportunities to defray the costs of iPads to foster alternative
methods of communication with our participants.
The Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center thanks the
Jewish Home Board and Administrators for their continued
commitment and support. We want to especially
congratulate this year’s honoree, Ary Freilich, who has
been a most devoted cheerleader of all our efforts.
His commitment to the Jewish Home and Jewish community
is only surpassed by his caring, compassionate
nature. The Jewish Home Family and all its entities,
including the Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center, truly
benefits from his support.
Along with the milestones we celebrate, the Center is
pleased to have been awarded several grants which has
allowed us to achieve the goals of providing quality
health care services to individuals.
Two grants through the generosity of
Jewish Federation of Northern NJ and
the Henry & Marilyn Taub Foundation
have enabled us to defray the cost of
the program to participants who otherwise
could not afford to attend.
Community Outreach Programs
Kosher Meals-on-Wheels
The Jewish Home Family has been providing homebound
frail and the elderly with nourishing, nutritious,
hot meals — first in Hudson County since 1973 — and
by the late 70’s in Bergen County at the request of UJC
of Bergen County. The program delivers hot meals to our
sister Jewish agencies throughout Hudson, Bergen and
Passaic Counties aided by specialized food vans. The
meals — prepared at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh —
are under kashruth supervision of the Rabbinical Council
of Bergen County.
Begun in the fall of 2011, The Jewish Home Family
launched a Holiday Kosher-Meals-On-Wheels program.
This program delivers, with the use of Jewish Home
volunteers, to individuals in the community who
respond to notices for holiday meals for Rosh Hashanah,
Hanukkah and Passover. 197 hot Kosher holiday meals
were delivered in the inaugural year.
Kosher Nutrition Sites
This wonderful program invites seniors to share a
well-prepared kosher lunch in the company of their
contemporaries at eight sites throughout Bergen,
Hudson and Passaic Counties.
In Hudson County, the locations include the JCC
Bayonne under the auspices of Jewish Family Service of
Jersey City, Bayonne and Hoboken. In Bergen County,
the sites are located at the Y-JCC of Bergen County in
Washington Township, and the Teaneck Jewish Center.
We also supply meals to the Passaic County Department
of Human Services, and the Jewish Children’s and Family
Services of North Jersey.
Transportation
Program
In conjunction with
the Bergen County Division of Senior Services, Department
of Human Services, a door-to-door transportation
service provides the elderly or disabled transportation
with the assistance of an aide to medical appointments
and services at the Adler Aphasia Center, Gimbel Center
for MS at Holy Name Hospital, and the Medical Suites
at JHR.
Education Seminars for the Community
Community and professional seminars are offered on a
variety of subjects, ranging from financial planning for
women, Jewish medical ethics, planning for families with
elder care needs, understanding memory loss as well as
family care support groups.
Shabbat Worship and Meal Assistance
The Shabbat Worship program is aimed at those in the
community who would like to attend religious services
but are unable to get to services on their own, and the
meal assistance provides a home delivered kosher meal
for those who do not have the ability to prepare their
own Shabbat meal.
The elderly who would benefit from these programs are
identified by Rabbis and community agencies.
Geriatric Care Management
Launched in 2009, Jewish Home at Home helps families
and loved ones age in place at home (Please see pages
22 and 23.)
The kashruth at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh is under
the supervision of the Rabbinical Council of Bergen
County.
Harvey Gross, MD, Medical Director
Jewish Home Family
Environments that Nurture and Promote Well-Being
Celebrating facility milestones of ten and five years, our
goal remains constant — to establish an environment
which nurtures and promotes well being. Residentoriented
care and home-like amenities is the model
of care at Rockleigh, including sub-acute care for those
residents who have been recently hospitalized and
are planning to return to the community, long-term
residents who view Rockleigh as their home and
residents who are at the end of their lives and who may
receive palliative care or hospice.
Quality medical care is always the primary concern.
Interdisciplinary teams meet regularly to evaluate and
assess the needs of all the residents. The teams include
attending physicians, physiatrists, nurses, physical,
speech and occupational therapists, social workers and
dieticians. They communicate on a regular basis about
the individualized care program. Of course, patient and
family input is very important. We are now working
toward introducing computerized medical records
which will aid the communication process.
Jewish Home Assisted Living is an active and vibrant
community. The medical personnel including physicians,
therapists, administrative and nursing staff provide
on-site care in addition to a consulting staff which
includes podiatry, psychiatry and physiatry. The environment
at JHAL follows the model of living at home.
Jewish Home at Home has grown with more referrals
from the community as we attempt to keep the elderly
in their own homes for as long as possible providing the
entire spectrum of care including nursing and psychological
services, physical, speech and occupational
therapy and physician home visits.
Excellent care is provided at the Gallen Adult Day Health
Care Center for those who live at home and require
additional support.
Quality assurance is our means to continually evaluate
ongoing care. We investigate all issues ranging from
response time to call bells to food temperatures. Medical
concerns include the etiology and prevention and treatment
of congestive heart failure, with the increase of
more residents with post cardiac conditions. There are
ongoing educational lectures for our staff members
including discussions about different types of infections,
such as C. Diff. Colitis and their treatment.
This past year we have embarked upon some research
projects. One, in particular, involves the use of iPods and
music to improve the quality of life of our patients with
Dementia.
Our ethics committee meets on a quarterly basis. Case
presentations followed by a full discussion of the ethical
issues such as living wills and do not resuscitate orders
as well as education regarding definitions and principles
fill the agenda. These meetings are well attended by
nurses, social workers, administration, physicians, board
members, a medical and legal ethicist and our religious
leader, Rabbi Feld.
We remain steadfast in our focus being the quality of
life of our residents. We can certainly feel proud of
the medical care we provide in a supportive emotional
environment in all of our facilities as we continue to
strive to improve the lives of our elderly.
For the Love of Rehab
Select Medical Rehabilitation Services is proud to provide
rehabilitative services for the Jewish Home residents at
Rockleigh, at the Gallen Adult Day Health Care Center,
and at Jewish Home Assisted Living.
The members of our team include Physical Therapists,
Occupational Therapists, and a Speech Therapist, as well
as Rehabilitation Techs, all who take their role to rehab our
residents to their greatest functional level very seriously.
The pride felt working for the Jewish Home Family is
exemplified in all that we do to help our residents —
from the feedback we receive, our residents can tell.
Residents with a scheduled discharge from our facilities
are asked to complete a satisfaction survey to qualify
their perception of their rehab. Many of the comments
we receive fill our hearts with joy: “Best therapy I ever
encountered. Every therapist was giving 100%,” “Your
therapy department is far above average, and will work
as hard as you let them. Responsive to sincere interests,”
“Scored a 15 on a scale of 0–10,” and “The therapists
have been wonderful. So kind, caring, and helpful.”
Receiving praise from our residents touches us and
reaffirms our decision to work in this field as well as for
the Jewish Home. Additionally, from our perspective,
there’s no greater feeling of delight than to see a
resident walk out of
the doors independently,
knowing that
we played a vital role
in their regaining that
independence.
for our residents, we constantly research new treatment
ideas, technology, and modalities. Most notably, this past
year, we began incorporating the use of an iPad, primarily
in Speech Therapy, as well as in Occupational and
Physical Therapy. The iPad has enabled us to have more
interactive treatment regimens for aphasia and dysphagia
in ST, and we’ve integrated many available aps into
PT and OT to assess posture, create exercise programs,
create customizable ADL routines, and measure range
of motion. Additionally, we recently purchased a highend
ultrasound and electric stimulation machine that
we use for pain relief, edema reduction, wound healing,
muscle strengthening, etc. We also continue to use the
Nintendo Wii for upper and lower extremity exercise,
standing balance, and muscle coordination.
At our Assisted Living, our full time therapy team
provides individualized therapy aimed at improving
each resident’s functional mobility and ability to live as
independently as possible. Recently, we added a small
set of parallel bars, which has enabled us to expand our
balance and strengthen programs. We also provide
training and inservicing to the staff to assist the residents
with maintaining their mobility beyond their therapy
programs.
We are very lucky to work with a fantastic organization,
as well as to know that every day, the work
that we do influences the quality of the lives of
our residents, as
well as their families
and friends.
Driven by our compassion
and desire to
do the best we can
Cutting edge Rehab modalities such
Making Shabbat
Meaningful
Rabbi Simon H. Feld
Director of Rabbinic Services
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
In the Jewish tradition, no holiday takes on greater
significance than Shabbat. In the words of our Talmudic
Sages “This world is the anteroom which leads to the
main ballroom in the world to come.” If that is the case,
then the Shabbat that we engage in on earth is but a
prelude to the greatest joy yet to come.
So how do we at the Jewish Home at Rockleigh make
Shabbat meaningful for our residents? Two significant
programs create a wonderful Shabbat ambience and
impact the spiritual well being of our residents. The first
began almost six years ago when a small group of
volunteers from Temple Emanu-El of Closter began to
join us once a month for Shabbat services. Their numbers
have more than tripled and the residents delight in
having them join us in prayer with their beautiful
melodies and voices. Not only do they help make the
Minyan (quorum), they energize the residents and create
a warm, cohesive environment.
The second, initiated this past year, are monthly
Shabbatons run by the National Council of Synagogue
Youth. They eat, dance, sing, discuss Torah
topics and sleep in the building. The
residents are electrified by this dynamic
interaction between the generations.
When a resident sees a child, it brings back
their own youth and they reminisce about
their childhood synagogues, affiliations,
families and neighborhoods.
These are just two examples
of how the Jewish Home at
Rockleigh impacts the spiritual
welfare of our beloved residents.
In doing so, we underscore the
importance of quality of life and
provide dignity for those who
live in this warm and engaging
environment.
Our volunteers help us
help others
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Connections, Collaborations
and Milestones
It’s been a privilege to represent the Jewish Home Family
this year and celebrate a first anniversary as the Director
of Volunteer Services. Over 100 new volunteers joined
our family this year. The Jewish Home at Home, Gallen
Adult Day Health Center, Jewish Home Assisted Living
and Jewish Home at Rockleigh are all benefiting from this
pool of new talent.
Milestones this year include the new Jewish Home at
Home Holiday Meals on Wheels Program. More than 30
volunteers, ages 5 to 85, stepped up to the “plate” to
deliver 197 hot, home-style, holiday meals to home-bound
seniors in the community. We received countless calls
and letters from recipients thanking us for the “delicious”
meals and for the “wonderful” volunteers who visited.
Another success this year is our collaboration with the
faculty of Long Island University. Together we created an
innovative internship program — the very first of its kind
— providing a comprehensive education in the continuum
of senior care. Students rotate through the Jewish
Home at Home, Gallen Adult Day Health Care Program,
Jewish Home Assisted Living and Jewish Home at
Rockleigh. This program not only benefits the interns,
it benefits our entire Jewish Home Family as
well. A new connection worth mentioning is our
collaboration with volunteers from NCSY. Together
we created a blueprint for the Shabbatons now
being held at JHR.
It’s been a joy to
reach out, make connections
and build
friendships this year.
Thanks to the board
members who helped
open doors for our outreach programs and helped
recruit volunteers from their circle of friends. Special
thanks to our honoree, Ary Freilich, for his excellent leadership
and his on-going support of our entire Family.
Annette Myers
Director of Admissions/Marketing
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
Marketing Efforts Remain
Strong to Serve Community
The year 2012 has been one of change in the Marketing
and Admissions Department. One of our beloved and
long-time team members left her position with us after
an extended medical leave. Our search for a new nurse
case manager to step in at area hospitals led us to a very
capable and compassionate nurse, JoAnne Herzog, who
has already been a wonderful asset to the department.
Mary Jane Dale, our nurse case manager of the past
nine years, stays in all of our hearts and prayers as she
continues to strengthen and heal. Beside the major
change in our very well honed team, the Admissions and
Marketing Department also made a physical change this
past year and now calls a suite shared with the Social
Work Department its new home. The joining of the
two departments has only helped to better serve our
residents and their families.
The strong census at the Jewish Home is one thing that
has remained unchanged over the past year with an
average 98.7% monthly occupancy. Admissions over
the past year have included five residents coming
directly from the community with NJ Medicaid as payor
source. An average 53 admissions per month included
those requiring long term care, short term rehabilitation,
respite and re-admissions from hospital stays. The
appropriate balance of private paying, Medicare, private
insurance and NJ Medicaid recipients has been carefully
maintained.
Two of the most notable marketing endeavors of the
past year have been the representation of the Jewish
Home Family in our sister community, Nahariya, Israel,
during a Jewish Federation of Northern NJ’s Partnership
2gether sponsored trip in February, and the celebration
of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh’s ten year anniversary
in November 2011. As has always been the case, the
very best marketing is the combined efforts of the
extraordinary team which creates positive experiences
for our residents and their families.
John Albanese
Director of Sales and Marketing
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Continued Growth and
Accomplishments
Since 2007, we've watched JHAL grow, develop and
enjoy accomplishments in marketing events, census
growth — and perhaps our best achievement — building
a solid reputation in the community for providing
excellent care, and setting the bar for assisted living in
and around Bergen County.
Care and food are two important factors when deciding
on an assisted living facility, and residents and their
families provide positive feedback that we excel in both.
Although we experience loss due to natural aging, JHAL
maintains a higher census than that of other local
assisted living facilities. The majority of our new inquiries
continue to be referrals from our resident families — a
testimony to how happy families are with the quality of
care and attention their loved ones receive.
Memory Lane, our specialized dementia unit, one of the
only mild to moderate dementia units of its kind in the
area, continues to have a healthy waiting list. This unique
feature allows our high functioning dementia residents
to participate in regular lunch outings and bowling trips.
By maintaining a high functioning dementia unit, we
further our ability to keep our regular assisted living population
comfortable. This is very evident with the ability
of our assisted living population to keep their minds and
bodies strong as they take advantage of the new 92nd
Street Y programs and our LifeTrail Fitness System.
Keeping current has been a key focus of our marketing
in 2012. The year began with the redesign of all of our
print materials shared with potential families and professionals
interested in learning about JHAL. Along with the
other entities of the Jewish Home Family, JHAL introduced
a new, redesigned, user-friendly website.
The pride felt for our community, services, amenities, and
the success of our residents is obvious to anyone who
steps into our wonderful facility.
Eric Riguerra, RN
Director of Nursing
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
Quality Nursing,
Compassionate Care
Since the opening of the Jewish Home at Rockleigh, our
goal in the Nursing Department has remained the same.
The promise to provide the highest quality of care in a
compassionate manner is truly important and at the core
of our mission.
Quality nursing care is always our concern. This year,
Nursing is focusing on various quality indicators including
the prevalence of falls, nosocomial pressure ulcers, urinary
tract infections, and decline in resident’s function. Quality
assurance is our means of ensuring that we meet the
health needs in our setting and develop interventions in
our resident population based on evidence review.
Navigating the way to effective care transitions is also
a focus of the Nursing team this year. This area not only
impacts the long term care setting but also hospitals,
assisted living facilities and residents’ homes. The goal of
this program is to create strategies and interventions to
decrease frequent readmission to hospitals, decrease
unplanned and avoidable transfers and provide resident
centered care planning. Unplanned transitions greatly
impact our residents, family and caregivers both
physically and emotionally, and are very costly.
Electronic medical records are an integral element of
good care transition. The system enables the facility
to have a standardization and accurate communication
between facility settings, doctors, practitioners and
nurses. This will promote effective handovers, medication
reconciliation and safe medication practices. This year
we are excited about working toward introducing
computerized medical records in our facility.
With changes in our medical trends and increased
resident acuities, it is the responsibility of the Nursing
Department to assure optimum care and to continually
improve our services.
Director of Health Care Services
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Dedication and Compassion
Each and Every Day
As we take the opportunity to reflect upon the past year
at Jewish Home Assisted Living, we have seen our
community grow in many ways. We have welcomed
many new residents, experienced the loss of some, and
seen a large number of our residents age in place. Our
committed staff of nurses and care associates, many of
whom celebrated their five year anniversary at the Jewish
Home Assisted Living, continue to strive to deliver the
highest quality of care each and every day.
We are truly blessed to
have had the opportunity
to love and care for
so many wonderful
residents and families
over the past five years.
We continue to be
privileged with the
ability to care for eight
of our original residents of JHAL which reflects our true
commitment to individuality, dignity, respect, quality
of care and of course, trust. Trust has been the key to
the success of the Wellness Department at JHAL.
Families truly trust that their loved ones are in the hands
of dedicated, loving nurses and care givers. Their dedication
and compassion to the residents is made obvious
each and every day!
Not one department is responsible for making JHAL
the outstanding community it is, but the whole interdisciplinary
team, from our executive director, marketing,
housekeeping, maintenance, nursing, social work and
dietary. Each of us, as a member of the team, brings a
very important piece to the JHAL family and our continued
commitment to the best quality of care for each of
our residents. This team of highly dedicated and caring
professionals strives each and every day to make JHAL
the absolute best community.
Tracey Couliboly
Director of Recreation
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
Always Introducing
New Programming
Julie Cochrane, ADC
Director of Activities/Volunteer Services
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Programming Helps Residents
Enjoy Each Day
Music is often described as the universal language. It
facilitates movement and responses. Regardless of
cognitive ability, it is a powerful modality for individuals
who are unable to express themselves. In order to greater
enhance the residents’ quality of life, music has become
the bridge between our traditional programs and new
innovative ones.
Last fall, residents began rehearsing weekly for our first
musical production “Broadway Melodies”. A drumming
facilitator has helped start a monthly drumming circle. The
power of expression through the use of percussion instruments
has been extremely beneficial to all participants.
Inspired by a You Tube video on the use of iPods with
dementia patients, our interdisciplinary team tailored
music on iPods based on residents’ preferences. Six
residents were initially chosen to participate and the
results were overwhelming — with passive residents
noticeably reacting to the music with a higher measure
of satisfaction and enjoyment. The program was
immediately expanded and continues to grow.
Last fall we also launched Jewish Home University,
discussing a variety of educational topics — from
learning Yiddish with Roberta Books to discussing
“The Building of the Total Jewish Community” with
George Hantgan. The program ended with an elaborate
graduation, and residents received hand written
diplomas and citations from State Senator Weinberg and
Assemblywoman Huttle.
In our efforts to embrace technology, we began a new
relationship with the students of Yavneh Academy. What
started as bi-weekly computer lessons became an
extended relationship between old and young. Our
residents expressed their fondest memories with
newfound friends and shared the experience in a video
archive titled “Days of Our Lives…Who We Are”.
Our goal is to continue to provide a variety of unique
programs that matter.
28
As we celebrate five years of excellence at JHAL, we are
thrilled to announce some exciting new additions to our
recreational program.
We kicked off the early part of the year with the installation
of a hearing enhancement system that enables many
residents to have a more enjoyable auditory experience.
Our Memory Lane residents continue to go out for lunch,
compete in bowling tournaments at local bowling alleys,
skype with loved ones and enjoy an increased number of
new entertainment and horticulture programs.
We introduced the satellite programming of the 92nd
Street Y into our theatre with the first live broadcast of Israeli
President Shimon Peres. Our resident committee is busy
selecting an exciting lineup of the upcoming programs.
Arts & Crafts has elevated to a new level with professional
style projects led by our new arts & crafts coordinator.
Residents are thrilled and the turnout is fabulous!
Our back patio was standing room only in late June as residents
tapped their feet to the Glen Rock Pops! JHAL represented
Team Israel in the Senior Olympics, competing
against another assisted living facility with closing ceremonies
at our building. National Assisted Living Week saw
residents enjoying staff competing in volleyball and tug of
war as well as our annual Grandparents Day Celebration!
JHAL enjoys a high number of male residents, so we
started a Men’s Group that meets weekly, discusses topics
of interest and ventures out for lunch regularly. We have
introduced a Personal Shopper Service to help busy
families unable to run errands for loved ones, or to help
residents who are unable to leave the facility.
With the help of Charlene Vannucci, Jewish Home Family
Director of Volunteers, we have seen a jump in the
number of volunteers. These dedicated individuals give
their time freely to help run lectures, play cards, call bingo
or just bring smiles to the faces of our residents.

Jaclyn Froman
Director of Social Services
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
Making Resident Quality
of Life Our Top Priority
The Jewish Home at Rockleigh’s fully staffed Social Work
Department makes resident quality of life our top priority.
This includes ensuring smooth admission and discharge
transitions, as well as opportunities for growth and
learning while here. Our male residents enjoy Men’s
Group, a thriving group with men in long term and sub
acute care, meeting weekly to discuss life milestones,
politics, history and sports. Our Women’s Group meets
weekly on the Rubin unit, helping provide companionship
and encouragement to our female residents. And,
Doll therapy has begun on the Seiden unit, aimed at
soothing Seiden residents by providing a life like doll to
hold, if interested, which can arouse positive memories
and feelings of calm, in a relaxed environment.
Our newly revised and updated Resident handbook is
greeting and guiding new residents and families when
they arrive at the Jewish Home. Our new social work
suite, on the Kaplen 1 unit, provides quick and direct
access to a social worker by residents and families on
our sub acute care unit. And, residents are enjoying
the friendship and assistance of social work and
counseling student interns from New York University,
Touro College, Long Island University and the Rutgers
School of Social Work.
Jewish Home social workers will continue to assist
families around end of life issues as well as help their
loved ones adjust to long term and sub acute care, as we
move forward with the
common goal of providing
a safe and comfortable
home to our residents,
with continued opportunities
for personal growth
and learning.
Nancy Ames, BSW
Director of Social Services
Jewish Home Assisted Living
Providing Emotional
Well-Being
The Social Service Department at Jewish Home Assisted
Living (JHAL) continues to strive to provide an atmosphere
of emotional well-being to each resident in a
warm, home-like environment which preserves and
enhances independence, choice, individuality and
dignity on a daily basis. The social workers meet with the
interdisciplinary team regularly to identify and address
any needs a resident may have.
Our internal groups continue to grow and offer ongoing
support for residents and family members. Our Welcome
Wagon Program and Transitions Group offer a “Meet and
Greet” upon admission and continued ongoing internal
support group sessions regarding adjustment to
community lifestyle. The Ritual Committee meets to
discuss the religious needs of our residents and creates
a spiritual and social atmosphere where residents feel
they are a part of a community. Our Men’s Group offers
a forum where men in our community can interact with
one another and foster friendships. A support group
relating to various concerns with dementia is offered to
the families of Memory Lane on a regular basis, as well as
ongoing support sessions for family members who are
struggling with the age related issues of their loved one.
The Social Service Department is available six days a week
to help families and residents transition into JHAL and
help deal with the day to day issues they may encounter.
The Social Work Department is privileged to be part
of an internship program with an area University. JHAL
provides a wonderful environment for students studying
geriatric care to experience the continuum of care and
services provided in assisted living.
As residents age in place, we as a community share
many life cycle events with our residents. We celebrate
holidays, recognize birthdays and anniversaries, mourn
our losses and together we strive to meet the emotional
needs of all the residents we are privileged to serve.
Lisa Segelbacher
Director of Food Services
Jewish Home at Rockleigh
Love Added to Each
and Every Bite
2012 represents the first year that the Dietary Services
team has been led and managed entirely by the Jewish
Home at Rockleigh staff — totally committed to continually
enhance the dining experience for residents, staff,
volunteers, and visitors each and every day.
Through intelligent and careful purchases, our management
team has improved the quality and variety of
meals, preparing and serving the finest and freshest
kosher foods available. The “new and improved” features
we implemented this year include: monthly resident
Culinary Club meetings with demonstrations of “how to
make” items such as kugel, hamantashen, fish cakes and
a variety of different salads, along with some store
bought items for residents to sample. Menu changes on
Friday evenings include a variety of new kugel recipes as
well as a wide variety of soups, and “home baked”
desserts like baked cinnamon apples, chocolate chip and
sugar cookies, apple cake and brownies.
We provide extra special dining delights during Shabbaton
weekends when young adults come and stay with us
for Shabbat. They engage and delight our residents
with their knowledge and enthusiasm, as seen on the
residents’ faces as they interact during mealtime.
The weekly summer resident BBQ’s have proven to be a
big hit as we offer hot dogs, hamburgers and watermelon
with all the fixings.
Visitors and staff at “Carl’s Place” enjoy new daily breakfast
and lunch specials. Cruise week was exciting this year,
with foods that enhanced the African Safari theme.
There is one very important ingredient that is included
with each and every meal we serve. Each Dietary team
member performs his or her tasks with love and adds this
love into every bite taken by our residents. We truly enjoy
serving all of you!
Jean Duroseau
Director of Food Services
Jewish Home Assisted Living
The Heart of Every Home
is the Kitchen
The residents at Jewish Home Assisted Living are
enjoying a country club dining experience. Food is an
important part in everyone’s life… At JHAL it’s become
the most important part of the day!
Recently JHAL celebrated five years since opening its
doors. Residents, family members, staff and volunteers
were treated to a delectable tasting of desserts as we
celebrated the residents we serve and the employees
who have been with us since the facility opened. The
display was breathtaking. Those attending could see for
themselves why JHAL has developed a wonderful reputation
for dining enjoyment.
When asking the residents why they are so happy, many
reply it is due to the menu options and the combination
of variety and traditional cuisine. Some of our more
traditional meals are offered for Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah,
Yom Kippur, and other holidays which, of course,
includes Passover and two wonderful Seders. Year after
year more and more family members come to JHAL to
share the holiday with their parents or grandparents and
enjoy the true Jewish flavor of JHAL’s cuisine.
The Food Service Department also offers favorite dishes
from France, Italy, Israel and Latin America, just to name
a few. Two of our residents this past year celebrated
milestone birthdays as they turned 101 and 103. It was
no surprise that food was a big part of the celebration.
The residents at JHAL also assist in creating meals. It has
become a tradition for some of our female residents to
assist in preparing dinner for the holidays as they share
their secrets with all who dine at the assisted living.
The heart of every home is the kitchen — at JHAL we
always keep that in mind!
Planting the Seeds
for the Future
Philanthropic giving during one’s lifetime is a path
firmly rooted in our Jewish tradition. The word itself,
tzedakah, comes from the root word, tzedech, or
righteous. To provide a gift to an organization, and be
able to see the benefits of that gift, is most gratifying.
However, to assure that these benefits continue to be
available beyond one’s lifetime is certainly a special
mitzvah. Such a deed demonstrates foresight and
generosity. It also shows an understanding of how
bequests help the Jewish Home to guarantee the
delivery of many vital services and programs to the frail
and elderly.
The most effective form of bequest is an unrestricted
one for the benefit of the Jewish Home Foundation.
This allows the Foundation to use the funds at its
own discretion, as needs change. Bequests may also be
designated for capital purposes, operations or for a special
purpose or program by creating an endowment.
An endowment provides that the income be used by
the Jewish Homes in perpetuity, with the principal
remaining intact. All bequests carry the name of the
benefactor or others as directed in the will.
While through your generosity we continue to provide
required funding for both capital and operating needs
of our facilities, building an endowment based on
planned legacy gifts is the means to secure our future.
Many members of our community have used their
foresight and beneficence and taken the initiative to
name the Jewish Home Foundation in their will. Please
join us as we plant the seeds for future generations by
making a bequest to the Jewish Home Foundation.
The Endowment Fund Programs of the Jewish Home
were initiated in 1992. In the 20 years since its inception,
a total of nearly $2.896 million has been committed to
33 funds to further enhance the daily lives of our
elderly. This past year one new fund was initiated.
Unrestricted endowments can be created for the
general benefit of the residents of the Jewish Home, to
be utilized at the discretion of the administration of the
Home. Alternatively, a donor may earmark a prospective
endowment for a specifically dedicated purpose. The
principal investment of these endowments is never
touched, but continues to grow through additional
commitments, contributions and interest. A perpetual
legacy of unbroken financial support for a special
activity is thus provided, which would be unavailable
otherwise. The endowment also carries the donor’s
name for all time.
Endowments, so generously established, enrich the
quality of the lives of our residents at the Jewish Home
at Rockleigh, and Jewish Home Assisted Living, as well
as those we serve through Jewish Home at Home and
our Adult Day Health Care and outreach programs —
permanently.
Friends of the Jewish Home are invited to select or
design a program and, in the Jewish tradition of
tzedakah, establish an endowment that will benefit our
elders today, and will be there for generations to come.
