San Dimas Chamber of Commerce 

Long before 1960, when San Dimas was incorporated, the heart of the local government was the San Dimas 

Board of Trade. Established in 1909, it helped solve many of the needs of public interest including establishment 

of street grades and street paving, fire protection, a public drinking fountain, a library, telephone service, street 

lighting, and many other important requirements of a growing town. The Board of Trade promoted San Dimas 

as “The Frostless Belt,” a reference to the citrus industry and the chosen motto was “Pioneering a new era.” 

In 1914, the Board of Trade changed its name to the Chamber of Commerce and community activities took 

the spotlight, including award-winning entries in the 1925 and 1926 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade—a 

mere 35 years old. Despite the local decline of the citrus industry in the 1950s, the town continued to grow 

and expand. 

Records dating to 1912 document the chamber’s discussions and active promotion of the incorporation of 

San Dimas, and in 1960 the chamber was on board to host the first meeting of the newly elected city council. 

The chamber was operating smoothly. Dwight Eisenhower was President. The local economy was booming. 

Gasoline was 31¢ a gallon, grapes were 10¢ a pound, bread was 21¢ a loaf, and you could buy a three-bedroom 

house for $13,725. Local businesses numbered 266. Interestingly, of the original 266 businesses, 146 are still in 

business and 102 are still located in San Dimas. 

With incorporation of San Dimas the role of the Chamber changed. Promotion of the city became a 

major drive, along with civic and community activities. A program was initiated to welcome new residents and 

promote city businesses and the chamber launched the annual Western Days Celebration and City Birthday 

Barbecue. Rapid growth and urbanization focused the chamber’s attention on business development issues, 

including the Festival of Arts, San Dimas Marketplace, and San Dimas Rodeo. 

Today city growth continues with more than 1,400 diverse businesses and services thriving. 

Now is a good time to become a chamber member and be part of the rich history, heritage and bright 

future of San Dimas.

History of San Dimas 

The bronze statue of Jedediah Strong Smith, the first American 

explorer to lead a party overland to the valley in 1826, sits on the 

southeast corner of the City Hall property, proclaiming it to be “A 

Welcome Sight.” 

At this time, the area was known as “Mud Springs” and was part 

of the 23,000 acre Rancho San Jose, the last Spanish land grant. It was 

a swamp, several acres in size, and a regular stopping place for early 

Indians, as well as later explorers. The Santa Fe Railroad came through 

in 1887, and the San Jose Land Co. was formed. The company chose to 

call the new town San Dimas, which was then the name of the canyon 

to the north. 

Every little town from South Pasadena to San Bernardino built a 

hotel for the expected rush of settlers. The hotel in San Dimas is the 

only hotel surviving. When the land boom collapsed in 1889, the J. W. 

Walker family from Kentucky purchased it and it was occupied by six 

generations of their family. Now known as the Walker House, it is 

located just north of the intersection of Bonita and San Dimas Avenues. 

After trying different crops, the San Dimas area was found to be 

especially favorable to lemon and orange groves, and to lesser extent, 

avocados. Water was available from both the old Mud Springs swamp 

and from San Dimas Canyon. For many years, San Dimas boasted a 

“frost-free” climate, and R.M. Teague established his citrus nursery, which 

became the world’s largest. The San Dimas Lemon Association was said 

to be the largest packing plant in the world and was responsible for 

many innovations. At one time, four citrus packing houses were located 

in San Dimas, as well as a marmalade factory. The San Dimas Feed 

Company, established in 1897, is the oldest business in town. 

In the 1950’s, burgeoning housing tracts, coupled with a disastrous 

disease affecting the citrus trees, changed the town and the surrounding 

area forever. 

From the early years of this century, there were attempts 

made to incorporate, but the Board of Trade (now the Chamber of 

Commerce) could not get the residents to agree. That changed when 

the surrounding cities began to annex areas in San Dimas’ “sphere-ofinfluence”. 

The citizens became sufficiently alarmed to vote in favor of 

incorporation in 1960. 

In the early 1970s, the “Western Village” concept for the downtown 

core area was developed. Now, with about 35,000 residents, our 

community stretches from Interstate 10 Freeway in the south to the 

foothills of the San Gabriel mountains in the north. 

San Dimas . . . 

The Legend 

Behind the Name 

For many years, it was commonly 

accepted that Don Ignacio 

Palomares gave the name “San 

Dimas” to the canyon because 

of the practice of horse thieves 

hiding their booty there. It was 

said that, in exasperation, the Don 

made reference to St. Dismas, 

the crucified, repentant thief on 

the Cross, and wished that the 

horse thieves would also repent 

and stop the depredations of his 

livestock. However, in researching 

his book, San Dimas, Preserving 

the Western Spirit, Dr. Nicholas 

Polos discovered that Don Ignacio 

Palomares had come from the little 

town of San Dimas in northern 

Mexico. Although it is not as 

romantic a legend, local historians 

now feel that the probability is 

that the Don named his new home 

after his old one in Mexico. 

The canyon, now called 

Horsethief Canyon, lies to the 

west of San Dimas Canyon and 

was formerly known as Sycamore 

Canyon for the multitude of 

sycamore trees growing there. 

The name Horsethief Canyon has 

no historical basis except for the 

Palomares legend. 

Beginning in the fall of 1998, 

the new Horsethief Canyon Park 

became the permanent home for 

the annual San Dimas Rodeo, held 

as a part of Western Days in early 

October.

San Dimas Festival of Arts 

The San Dimas Festival of Arts began in 1977 as a 

Chamber of Commerce venture under the guidance of 

John Walgren, the Executive Director at the time. This 

non-profit organization was first known as the Festival 

of Western Arts and held it’s first Annual Western Art 

Exhibition & Sale in April 1977. The aim as part of the 

Mission Statement was to preserve the history and 

cultural heritage of our American West. As the exhibition 

draws artists from across the nation, it is now known 

as the National Western Art Exhibition & Sale. The 

33rd Exhibition was held in April of 2009. Hundreds of 

volunteers throughout the years have made this a success, 

making it possible to bring a second show to the city of 

San Dimas, the Wildlife Art Show. This show is held every 

October and celebrates its 14th year in 2010. 

In keeping with its Mission Statement to “enrich life 

in the community through enjoyment and appreciation of the 

fine and applied arts”, the Festival is now known as the Festival of Arts. In its effort to bring credit and 

distinction to the city of San Dimas, the Festival has sponsored six public art projects: a bronze statue, 

“A Welcome Sight”, a 40-foot stone mural, “Between the Sun and the Moon”; a small sculpture, “Catching 

Frogs”, a bronze, “Cornerstones of Freedom”; the “Angel of San Dimas”, and a life-sized four-figured 

bronze, “Our Neighborhood Sheriff ’s Station”. The close involvement of the Festival with the City of San 

Dimas in the planning and execution of the Walker House renovation has included the procurement 

of a federal grant and numerous money raising events. The completion of the restoration of this 

historical grand old mansion is an event of pride the whole community of San Dimas can share. 

The Festival is now sponsoring rotating art shows in the 2nd Story Gallery in the Walker House. 

These exhibits are held the 2nd and 3rd Friday and Saturday of every month from 5 – 9 pm. The 

rotation shows are of different types of art executed by professionals and students. Encouragement 

of student artists has long been a priority of the Festival. Student art has been included in both the 

Western and Wildlife Art shows. Professional artists judge the student work and offer their advice 

and encouragement. All art shows are offered to the public as cultural and entertaining events with 

no fee for attendance.

San Dimas Historical Society 

The Society was established in 1965 with Mrs. Harry Walker’s extensive personal collection of photographs, 

scrapbooks and notebooks as the foundation of the ever-growing collection. The Society’s purpose is to 

preserve the past and record the continuing history of San Dimas to share with future generations. 

Local historical sites are recognized with bronze plaques and the Society offers two dinner meetings each 

year, a local “Antiques from Your Home” show and an Ice Cream Social. The San Dimas Historical Society 

also takes part in the annual Western Days celebration with displays and offers an extensive line of San Dimas 

souvenirs for sale. The souvenirs are also available at the Society’s gift shop located on the second floor of the 

Walker House. 

Displays are maintained in the foyer of San Dimas City Hall and at the Society’s museum located on the 

second floor of the historic Walker House. The museum is opened the first and third Saturday of each month 

from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. 

Docent led tours of the historic Walker House are available the second Saturday of each month. Tours will 

meet on the front veranda of the Walker House and groups of approximately 15 people will be guided through 

the house at 10 minute intervals starting at 10:00 am – with the last tour group leaving the veranda at 10:50 

am. There is no charge for the tour. Space is limited. If you would like further information or reservations, 

please call (909) 592-1190. 

A walking tour of the historic part of San Dimas is conducted on the third Saturday in February, May, 

August and November. People interested in the tours should meet on the veranda of the historic Walker 

House at 9:00 am. The cost is $5 per person and everyone attending will receive a walking tour booklet. If it 

is raining at 8:00 am, the tour will be cancelled. 

Membership in the society is open to everyone interested in preserving or learning about the local history.

Pacific Railroad Museum 

Housed in the former AT&SF train depot in old town San Dimas, the Pacific 

Railroad Society operates the Pacific Railroad Museum. The depot has been 

restored by the Society to represent a working railroad station with displays 

of authentic artifacts and exhibits of railroading. The museum also houses an 

extensive research library containing books, documents, maps, and photographs 

dating back to the 1930’s. 

Admission to the Museum is free. The Museum is open Saturdays from 

10 AM to 4 PM and Wednesdays from 1 PM to 5 PM. The San Dimas Pacific 

Railroad Museum, staffed by volunteers, is located at 210 West Bonita Avenue 

between Cataract and Monte Vista Avenues next to the railroad tracks.

Government Structure 

San Dimas is a city council / city manager form of 

government. The city council consists of four elected 

council members and a publicly elected mayor. The city 

manager oversees a staff of four internal departments: 

Planning, Public Works, Parks & Recreation and 

Administration. Police support is provided through 

a contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s 

Department and the Los Angeles County Fire 

Department provides fire protection. 

Transportation 

Arrive in San Dimas by plane, train or automobile. We’re easily accessible from the 10, 210 and 57 

freeways. Amtrak offers service through its Pomona station and Metrolink provides commuter service 

from stations in Pomona and Covina. Light rail commuter service is planned to stop in San Dimas 

sometime after 2010. Foothill Transit provides local and regional bus and commuter service from many 

street bus stops and two commuter parking lots. Commercial air, both passenger and freight, are available 

from nearby Ontario International Airport and local private air access is available from Brackett Field in 

nearby La Verne. 

Shopping in San Dimas 

Most of your shopping needs can be satisfied at one of our local 

shopping areas and, when you need a rest, you can enjoy a nice meal 

at one of over fifty eating establishments. 

The Historic Downtown on Bonita Avenue features family owned 

restaurants, antique stores, numerous service providers, one of the 

region’s premier model railroad suppliers and our historic hardware 

store. The Target shopping center features Target, many national 

clothing stores, a pet supply store, an office supply store, small 

specialty stores and several local restaurants. 

San Dimas Station on Arrow Highway has several local merchants, 

local and national restaurants and Southern California’s premier 

western night spot, Montana’s. Lowe’s Home Improvement Store is 

at Bonita Avenue and Arrow Highway along with a furniture store, 

two restaurants and lots of fast food. 

The Costco shopping center, opened in early 2008. In the future, it 

will feature many retail stores and restaurants, as well as Costco.

Education 

San Dimas is served by two public school districts. The Bonita 

Unified School District is the prominent public school provider 

with four traditional elementary schools, one middle school and 

one high school. The district also provides an alternate K-12 

school and a continuation high school. A small portion of 

San Dimas students attend a second middle school and a high 

school in La Verne which also are a part of the Bonita Unified 

District. Some students in 

Via Verde and the western portion 

of San Dimas attend schools in 

the Covina / Charter Oak School 

District, which serves primarily the 

City of Covina. 

Several private day care centers and private K–12 schools operate 

in the city. Additionally, Damien High School, a Catholic boys high 

school in La Verne, serves students in San Dimas. 

Two institutions of higher learning, Life Pacific College and ITT Technical Institute, are in the City 

of San Dimas. Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, the state’s largest community college, includes 

San Dimas in its district. Citrus Community College and Azusa Pacific University are in nearby 

Azusa. The University of La Verne and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona are just next 

door. The seven colleges that make up the prestigious 

Claremont Colleges are just a few miles away.

Things To Do in San Dimas 

If you are looking for things to do in San Dimas, you 

needn’t look far. A variety of community events take 

place throughout the year. In January the Chamber of 

Commerce hosts the Citizen of the Year Banquet to 

honor residents for outstanding contributions to the 

city. The Parks & Recreation Department conducts 

Easter egg hunts and Easter coloring contests along with 

the annual Family Festival and the Spring Recital for the 

performing arts programs. The Festival of Arts puts on 

the nationally recognized Western Art Show in April and 

the Wild Life Art Show in October. From April through 

September, you can enjoy the San Dimas Farmers’ 

Market every Wednesday evening. 

During the summer, Music In The Park provides 

entertainment for the whole family. San Dimas High 

School offers some of the best in high school sports. 

The first Friday in August, the Chamber of 

Commerce helps the City celebrate its birthday 

with a community BBQ. With deep-pit barbequed 

beef, all the fixings, ice cream and birthday cake, the 

celebration has the feel of an old-fashioned picnic. 

Free rides and activities for the children, and lively 

music for listening and dancing, provide a great 

evening of family fun. 

A citywide western spirit prevails during Western Days weekend, held the first weekend in 

October. Western Days, hosted by the San Dimas Chamber of Commerce, includes a parade 

and band competition, lots of craft and food vendors, 

a Native American Pow Wow, cowboy reenactments 

complete with shootouts and the Little Miss San 

Dimas contest. The San Dimas Rodeo conducts their 

PRCA sanctioned Rodeo the same weekend. 

Year’s-end is signaled by the arrival of the City’s 

Halloween Carnival and the HolidayFest, which includes 

a real mountain of snow for the kids to sled on and a 

traditional Christmas Tree Lighting with Santa. 

These events make San Dimas a wonderful place to 

live, work & play.

Recreation 

Recreation opportunities abound in San Dimas. The City 

operates seven parks including the Swim and Racquet Club, an 

equestrian arena, a skateboard park and a dog park. 

The San Dimas Parks and Recreation Department has extensive 

year-round programs for all ages and one of the most active 

senior centers in the area. There are three commercial 

equestrian centers, two golf courses (one public and one 

private), a bowling alley, lots of hiking and equestrian trails, and 

two museums. 

Two county parks are in the City including Bonelli Park with its 

boating and swimming lake, an adjacent public golf course, an 

equestrian center and broad expanses of open area for picnics 

and recreation. Fairplex, home of the L.A. County Fair, is just 

down the street and it is only a short drive to Disneyland, 

Knott’s Berry Farm, the San Gabriel Mountains for hiking and 

camping, the San Bernardino Mountains for hiking, camping and 

skiing, and the many beaches of Southern California for fun in 

the sun. And, Raging Waters, the finest water park in California 

is right here in San Dimas.
