THIRTEENTH JAN HANSSON SYMPOSIUM
on
CHEMICAL PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH THE STABILITY OF EXPLOSIVES

The conference series “International Symposium on Chemical Problems Connected with the
Stability of Explosives” started in 1967. Under the leadership of Dr Jan Hansson and the
Swedish Section for Detonics and Combustion, the conference series turned out to be an
internationally esteemed and exclusive forum for presenting recent R&D results and for
discussing all kinds of stability-related issues. Shortly before the 12 th symposium, Dr Hansson
died at the age of 81.
We are very happy to announce the continuation of the conferences, now organised by the
Competence Centre for Energetic Materials (KCEM) in co-operation with the Swedish Section
for Detonics and Combustion. KCEM is a non-profit organisation for promoting the knowledge
of energetic materials. More information is available at www.kcem.se.
The Thirteenth Symposium will, like all the preceding symposia, deal with different themes
connected with the chemical properties of all types of energetic materials:
Chemical reactivity of energetic materials - reaction mechanisms, reaction rates,
activation energy, thermochemistry, and influence of isomers, impurities, phase
transitions, fractoemission of electrons, etc.:
Stability tests - the use of different chromatographic, spectrometric and thermal
methods, e.g. microcalorimetry, DSC, chemiluminescence, etc.:
Evaluation of test results - interpretation of the results, foundation of true
stability criteria, standardisation of tests, estimation of stable shelf life, evaluation
of test methods.
Papers on the following subject will also be most welcome:
Stability of new energetic materials – stability testing, shelf life assessment, etc.
concerning LOVA propellants and insensitive munitions.
The reason for arranging these symposia has always been to bring scientists together for the
exchange of ideas and information. One session will – as was the case at the last symposium -
be dedicated to a round table discussion on a subject of your choice. There will also be
adequate time for informal discussions with your colleagues from other countries after
scheduled sessions.
Symposium dates
6-10 June 2004, starting with a buffet at 18:00 – 21:00 hours on Sunday evening and ending
with breakfast on Thursday morning.
Location
Bäckaskog Castle is located in southern Sweden east of Kristianstad, the nearby city.
The castle originates from 1250 when a monastery was built. The province of Scania, in which
Bäckaskog is situated, belonged at that time to Denmark. In 1584 it was turned into a fortress.
Later, in the 1800s the Swedish King Karl XV made Bäckaskog Castle his favourite country
retreat. More information is available at www.backaskogslott.se. The closest international

airport is Kastrup at Copenhagen. From this airport there are frequent train connections to
Kristianstad (about 90 minutes) crossing the Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the
“Öresund Bridge”. From there you can take a taxi to Bäckaskog (20 minutes). By car you will
reach Bäckaskog on road E 22 about 10 km east of Kristianstad. Further information will be
included in the next circular.
Preliminary registration
Preliminary registrations are welcome as soon as possible. The number of participants is, as
usual, limited. The registration fee is SEK 5000 (excl. VAT), SEK 6250 (incl VAT). A second
circular will be sent to all preliminary registrants together with an invoice.
Further information
Further information will be available in the second circular. Abstracts and the symposium
programme will be sent out to all registrants before the conference. A spouses´ programme will
be arranged.
Lectures
Participants are invited to present lectures of about 20 minutes length. Abstracts should be
submitted no later than March 31, 2004, so that they can be printed and sent out before the
conference. Special information on manuscripts will be distributed to the authors of accepted
papers.
Languages
The conference language will be English.
Accommodation
Block reservations have been made at Bäckaskog Castle. All rooms have bathroom,
telephone, and TV.
Single room SEK 7215 (VAT incl.) or SEK 6130 (VAT excl.)
Double room SEK 6310 (VAT incl.) per person or SEK 5320 (VAT excl.)
The lodging (including VAT) is paid directly to the hotel when leaving. Any possible VAT
relief has to be handled with the customs officials when leaving Europe, and not with the hotel.
All participants will stay at Bäckaskog Castle. Accompanying family members pay SEK 2770
(VAT incl.).
