Sønderborg Municipality stretches
over approx. 50,000 HA (496,57
km 2 ), from Rinkenæs and Gråsten in
the west to South Als and Kegnæs
in the east, and from Nordborg in
the north to Broager in the south.
There are app. 76,000 inhabitants
in the municipality and the local
dialect can be quite a challenge,
even for Danish tourists.
Sønderborg is the region's
largest town with approx. 30,000
inhabitants. The city has much to
offer, with a cosy centre and a

charming harbour front lined with
cafés and restaurants.
Sønderborg Castle and the new,
impressive Alsion, comprising university
facilities, research centre,
concert hall and café, are beautiful
city symbols, underlining the town's
history and reflecting a city that has
big ambitions and is quickly expanding.
Gråsten is known for Gråsten
Castle, used as a summer home for
the royal family. The beautiful castle
garden is open to the public when
royalty is not in residence.
Broagerland and Sundeved provide
beautiful views to Flensborg
Fjord and Als Sound. The German
border, via Highway 8, is just half
an hour away, and Highway 41 connects
to the E45 motorway.
Als, with its 321 km 2 , is Denmark's
7th largest island. It is connected
to the mainland by two bridges in
Sønderborg, Christian X´s Bridge
and the Als Sound Bridge.
On Als lie the towns Augustenborg,
Nordborg and Sønderborg, each
known for its castle.

Via the ferries from the islands Ærø
and Funen (Bøjden-Fynshav) the
journey to Als takes less than an
hour. If you come from the north
and want to cross to Als, you can sail
on the small ferry ”Bitten Clausen”
from Ballebro to Hardeshøj in just
10 minutes.
There are train stations in both
Gråsten and Sønderborg, and it is
easy to go further by bus or taxi. If
you want to have a day's outing, there
are good train connections to Odense
and Copenhagen. There are also quick
connections by bus to Germany.
From the airport in Sønderborg,
there are several daily departures
to Copenhagen. The 40-minute
flight enables you to have a day in
Denmark's capital city and perhaps
see Tivoli, the Little Mermaid and
other sights of interest. If you fly
your own plane, you can land at Pøl
Airfield near Nordborg.
A visit to Flensborg or the historic
town Husum can be undertaken
by BusXpres from Sønderborg,
enabling you to enjoy your day
without worrying about maps and
traffic.
Two bridges connect Als to the mainland

The Sønderborg region is perfect
for an adults’ holiday. The combination
of cosy city atmosphere with
shops, cafés and restaurants, a wide
range of cultural offers, and lots of
opportunities for fresh air and exercise
make it attractive throughout
the seasons, for a short break or a
summer holiday.
Life on or near the water is always
a pleasure. Along the region’s coastline
are many beautiful spots, easily
reached by sailing your own boat
or taking an excursion on the fjord
with one of our tour boats.
Especially for Adults
If you fancy wellness, then Wellness
Centre Marina Fiskenæs in Gråsten
is just right for you. There are many
facilities, from hot and cold baths to
sauna, massage and light therapy,
all in beautiful surroundings right
by the water.
The pretty, small roads and marked
cycling and hiking paths in
the Sønderborg region give you
many possibilities for fresh air and
exercise. Walk the path of the old
gendarmerie along Flensborg Fjord,
and enjoy a good lunch at one of
the restaurants along the way, or fill
a picnic basket with the many specialities
of Southern Jutland.
The Sønderborg region is also
known for its fascinating border history
and for its castles, one of which is
Gråsten Castle, with its beautiful park.
The new sculpture park, Augustiana,
by Augustenborg Castle, is also worth
a visit.
Directly on Als Sound lies Alsion,
which houses one of Northern
Europe’s best concert halls for symphonic
music. This is the home of
the Southern Jutland Symphony

Orchestra. The concert hall hosts
everything from classical concerts to
modern music and theatre performances.
The Sønderborg region is also short
breaks with quality, the so-called Time
for Two. These offers are especially for
adults with time to spend on enjoying
life and each other. Time for Two
includes one or two nights’ accommodation
at a cosy hotel, and a creative
activity with professional instruction.
If you enjoy good food, you can
choose Time for Two Cooking School,
where gastronomy is of foremost
importance. You are invited into
the kitchen of a professional chef
and learn about food culture in
Southern Jutland and our excellent,
fresh produce. The day ends with
wine tasting and the special dinner
which you have participated in
preparing.
Another possibility is Time for Two
Baking School. It’s always best to do
it yourself, and you will learn how in
the cosy stable kitchen at Skærtoft
Mill. You will learn the traditional
French kneading technique that is
perfectly suited to the stone-ground
organic flour produced at the mill.
If you prefer brushes and colours,
the Time for Two Painting Classes
give you the chance to express
yourself on canvas. Our beautiful
surroundings provide unlimited
motifs, and qualified local artists will

Tilting Saturday and Sunday
Tilting-at-the-Ring festivals are a longstanding tradition
in Southern Jutland, and every town has its own tilting
tournament during the summer. Festivities last throuhout
the weekends, when riders compete during the day
and the evening is one long party in the beer tents.
Tilting-at-the-Ring has its roots in the Middle Ages,
when knights fought each other on horseback with lances.
When the sport came to Denmark, the armoured
knights were replaced by a ring hanging in a gallows,
making it an event for the common people.
Today, riders compete for the title of “king”, galloping
through the gallows to spear a ring with a lance. In the
first 24 rounds, the ring has a diameter of 22 mm and
those spearing all 24 rings go on to other rounds and are

eliminated one by one as the rings
diminish in size to just 6 mm in diameter
until only the king remains.
Tilting-at-the-Ring festivities are
also for children and grandparents.
There is entertainment for everyone,
including a funfair and cycle tilting
for the young, a coffee get-together
for seniors and the famous lunches
in the beer tent with up to 1100
enthusiastic diners. A little tip: No
tilting festival is complete without
trying a famous festival sausage.
Try them at the many stands dotted
around the fairground.
The largest tilting tournament
takes place in Sønderborg, with app.
500 riders taking part in an imposing
parade to and from the tilting
grounds. Don’t miss the parade with
its beautiful horses and both local
and international marching bands.
The various bands give concerts
around town during the festivities
and Sønderborg’s tournament
finishes with a wonderful Tattoo and
fireworks.

If you fancy a swim, visit one of our
beautiful beaches.
Our waters are usually calm, as
we are in the lee of Jutland where
westerly winds are prevalent.
Our location between fjord and belt
gives a mild climate, and the
dangerous undertows found along
the west coast seldom occur here.
Child-friendly beaches are
found at Købingsmark, Nygård
in Nørreskoven and Kærneland
near Skovby on Als, as well as at
vemmingbund, Gammelmark,

Kragesand and Alnor Beach Park on
the mainland.
Go on a crab hunt. It´s fun and easy
to catch crabs, and you don´t need
expensive equipment.
Tie one end of a string to a stick and
the other to a clothes peg. Attach
a crushed mussel to the clothe peg
and drop it into the water near
some seaweed.
It won´t be long before the crabs
appear and then the race is on to
see who can catch the most crabs!
Do you want to know more about
life in the sea? At Sønderborg Yacht
Harbour, the “Blue Flag Station” is
open during the summer and a
marine biologist is there to answer
questions about life in the sea. You
can observe crabs, starfish and
other marine life and plants.
Fishing trips are also arranged for
children, and you can borrow nets

Bring your angling gear with you.
Whether you prefer to sit by the

side of a lake and try to entice a
large pike or stand on the coast and
use flies or spinners, you have every
possibility for a wonderful angling
holiday here.

Would you like to go sailing, and
see your holiday destination from a
different angle?
Watch for harbour porpoises on
a guided fjord safari. See the many
birds and the beautiful Danish and
German coastlines. Try your hand
with a minitrawl and catch fish, crabs
and other creatures from the seabed.
On an evening dinner cruise, you
have the possibility to help hoist the
sails and man the ship’s wheel, just

Beautiful Bays and Inlets
If you sail your own boat, visit the harbours and marinas
along our coastline: Marina Fiskenæs on Nybøl Nor near
Gråsten, Marina Minde on Flensborg Fjord, the yacht harbours
in Høruphav, Sønderborg and Augustenborg, Dyvig
and Mjels vig on Als Fjord, and Fynshav on the east coast of
Als. See more on pages 64-65.
If you prefer to lie at anchor, there are many attractive
bays and inlets to choose from. Als Sound and Hørup Hav
are among the most popular.
There are annual sailing races and maritime events in
our waters. Plan your holiday to take part in ” Als Rundt”
or see the tall mast ships at the Rumregatta in Flensborg.
Sønderborg hosts Nordic Cadet Rally 2009. 11-12 naval
ships will be in Sønderborg harbour, and 400 sea cadets

from Denmark, Norway, Sweden
and Finland will compete in various

In every season, our surroundings
are a paradise for all nature lovers.
In spring, winter’s silence is broken
by small bubbling brooks and the
chirping of birds. The forest floor is a
carpet of white anemones, and the
sun peeps through the new, pale
green leaves on the beech trees.
During summer, the leaves will
form a tight, green roof over the
forest. No summer is as green as a
Danish summer in the beech forest,
and no perfume is sweeter than that
of forest, cornfields and the sea.
A Paradise...
When autumn arrives, the forests
change colour, bathed in tones of
red and yellow. The leaves soon fall
to the ground and the silence of
winter spreads across the land.
Enjoy our forests. The paths are well
suited for walking, cycling, driving
and horseback riding (with certain
restrictions for vehicles and riders).
On foot, you can leave the paths
and wander through the woods
wherever you like, and you may
collect fruit, berries, mushrooms
and pinecones for private use.

Nørreskoven (the North Forest)
is one of Denmark’s most beautiful
beech forests, situated right by the
sea. Throughout the forest, many
small paths lead down to the water.
Take a picnic and make use of the
many tables and benches. You can
buy a picnic basket at Sønderborg
Tourist Bureau. See more on page 62.
The forests around Gråsten invite
you to visit large carp dams and
beautiful lakes.

Take time to look for the many birds
that live here. There are more than
30 round and long barrows dotted
around the forests. If you begin your
walk from the P-area on Felstedvej,
you will pass Hjertehøj, the finest
Bronze Age mound in the region.
Dogs are welcome in the forests,
but must be kept on a leash. There
are 5 special forests where dogs
may run freely.
Near Gråsten, these are found at
Sø- and Saltholmen, Over- and
Nederstjernen. Other dog-friendly
forests are Karholm near Nordborg
and Madeskov near Sønderborg on
the edge of Augustenborg Fjord.

On the beaches, dogs must be kept
on a leash from April to the end of
September. They may run loose on
the beach during the rest of the
year, as long as they are kept under
control – it’s best to leash your dog
if other canines come by. Dogs
are forbidden on some beaches
– always check information boards
for local regulations.
The hedgerows along country
roads are filled with life. Lilacs,
laburnum and wild roses bloom
throughout the summer and later,
you can pick sweet blackberries
from the bramble bushes.

In the
Footsteps of the Gendarmerie
Hiking is a sport for everyone.
The following are some of the
many hiking trips that not only give
exercise but also lead you through
beautiful, unspoiled nature. See the
map on page 19. visit one of our
tourist bureaus and ask for detailed
folders or visit our website at

maps and suggestions.
FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HISTORY:
1. The Gendarm path (74 km) is
a unique place to hike in one of
Denmark’s most beautiful areas.
After Reunification in 1920, the
border and shipping routes were
controlled by the border gendarms.
Patrolling was by foot along the
coast and each gendarm had a particular
area under his jurisdiction.
The path begins in Høruphav
on South Als and goes via
Sønderskoven (The South Forest)
and Sønderborg to the mainland,
past Dybbøl, Broagerland, Gråsten,
and Kollund to the German border.
Most of the path follows the coastline
and leads through a changing
landscape of forests, marshes and
fields. After your hike, you can take a
bus back to your starting point. See

2. The Brickworks path goes alongside
the water where the remains
of 8 old brick factories can be seen.
The length of the hike is app. 3 km.
The parking area by Cathrinesminde
Brickworks Museum is a good starting
point for your hike.
3. The trail at Stensigmose
(3.5 km) starts at Spar Es Camping
and leads along the top of the bluff,
where there is a lovely view across

to vemmingbund and Dybbøl Banke.
There is a beach further along the track
and along Stensigmose Bluff, you can
hunt for fossils.
4. On Dybbøl Banke, a network of
paths leads you through a beautiful
area around the historic entrenchments
from the 1864 war.
5. The Nydam path (7 km) starts at
Sottrup Storskov (forest). You can follow
a route along the water, leading
past the place where Prussian soldiers
embarked in rowboats to capture Als
in 1864, and past Sandbjerg Manor,
used as Prussian headquarters during
the war. Continue past Denmark’s
famous bog, Nydam Mose, where two
boats dating from app. 310 AD were
excavated in 1863.
FOR THOSE WHO LOVE NATURE:
6. The Gråsten Forests offer a wellmarked
hiking route of app. 6 km, but
also give you the chance to plan your
own route.
6a. The Gråsten path is a 9 km
route. Along the way, you walk by
the castle lake, through Dyrehaven

across the town square.
7. The Fiskbæk Trail lies between
Adsbøl and Gråsten. There are 2
routes, both starting at Gråsten
Agricultural School. The yellow route
is the longest, app. 4 km, and leads
you past Fiskbæk Manor and across
the manor dike to Roden Forest,
where foxes and deer can often be
seen. There is a vantage point with a
fine view over Nybøl Nor.
8. The Heart path leads you on a 5.1
km route through Sønderborg. There

Past Hedgerows and Woods
is an alternative route of 5.4 km
where there are no stairs to climb.
9. Arnkilsøre has a 4 km hiking route
around the lovely area between
Alssund and Augustenborg Fjord and
through Arnkil Fredskov (forest).
10. Sønderskoven (forest) has
many hiking possibilities. On warm
evenings in May and June, you can
hear the small, green leaf frogs croaking
in the ponds.
11. The Kegnæs path comprises 3
routes of 10, 7 and 6 km which you
can also combine into 1 walk. Rich
bird life and beautiful nature await
on this enticing peninsula.
12. The Tandslet Trail lies approx.
1 km north of Tandslet village. The
4.5 km hike goes though Tandsholm
Skov (forest) along paths, past
hedgerows and woods to a vantage
point with a view over the South Als
landscape to the fjord and Germany.
13. The Augustenborg path (7 km)
leads through the park by the castle,
along the water by the harbour, and
along Lillehav (the little sea) with its
many birds. Continue along Krumom
via the old road to Bro, under the
dual carriageway and across the golf
course along beautiful Mjang Dam.
14. Nørreskoven (forest) offers 3
marked routes of 2 km each, one of
them suitable for wheelchair users.
There are many possibilities to plan
your own hike through the woods.
15. The Stevning Nor path is quite
varied, with stretches through beautiful
woods, past fields and on the
beach at the water’s edge. The route
is approx. 5.5 km.

16. The path at Havnbjerg Church
is approx. 2.8 km long. Park your car
by the church. The hike is varied, with
both nature areas, historical places
and a wonderful view from one of Als’
highest hills, 49 m above the sea.
17. The hike around Nordborg Lake
follows along the water’s edge part
of the way, and continues over a
hilltop where there is a lovely view
across the lake and the Little Belt.
The route is approx. 7.5 km and there
are many possibilities to birdwatch
and enjoy the beautiful surroundings
along the path.

18. Oldenor is a reinstated lake at
Dyvig on North Als. Established in
1993, it has become an eldorado for
birds. Everyone can enjoy the lake
and surroundings from the vantage
point on Færgevej.
19. Mjels Lake is the latest reinstated
lake on North Als. A hiking
route of 4.5 km runs along the north
side of the lake.
20. The Als path (approx. 64 km)
is the latest addition to trails
for nature lovers. It leads from
Hardeshøj on North Als, across the

island via Nørreskoven (forest) to
Fynshav and along the east coast
to Mommark. Along the way, you
will see some of the most beautiful
areas in the region.
FOR THE YOUNGEST:
17a.The Fairytale path by
Nordborg Lake is an interesting 1.5
km route. Along the path from the
castle to the bridge over Fægteborg
Stream, you and your children can
follow a story about the elves Alf
and Alfine.

Als is ideal for a tour of approx. 25
km. The route is mainly along smaller
roads.

In our beautiful forests, you can
choose between many small roads
and paths, leading you past ancient
burial mounds and long barrows
in the forests Nørreskoven and
Sønderskoven, or the Gråsten forests.
It is not possible to cycle the entire
Gendarm Path, but there are maps
showing alternate routes around
stretches of the Path suitable only
for hiking. The route leads along the
water through a beautiful, changing
landscape of hills, marshes and fields.
On Als, you will find interesting
roads called ”hulveje”, where you
may think that you are cycling
through a tunnel, but the road actually
runs between hedgerows. Such
roads are found on Hopsøhøjstien
near Nordborg, also Kanalvej and
Storemarksvej near Hundslev.
Hedgerows are everywhere, and
you will see something extra special
when the lilacs and laburnum bloom.

For a longer tour, use the ferry between
Hardeshøj and Ballebro connecting
the island Als to the mainland
- your bicycle travels free of
charge. On both sides of Als Sound,
you will find small, quiet roads in
beautiful surroundings. For local
colour, stop at one of the cosy inns,
or visit some of the small galleries,
museums and collections dotted
along the route.

Golf on Beautiful Courses
We have 3 excellent golf courses
– Alssund and Nordborg
Golf Clubs on the island of Als,
and Benniksgaard Golf Center in
Rinkenæs near Gråsten. All 3 courses
have 18 holes and are located in
lovely surroundings that might even
threaten your concentration on the
game.
There’s lots of room on our golf
courses, with no waiting to tee off.
Matches are a relaxing experience,
and you can forget everyday cares
and stress, and just enjoy yourself in
beautiful surroundings.
The grass is always greener on the
other side of the fence – or so the
saying goes. In our region, it really
IS greener than most other places in
Denmark, due to our mild winters.
Our climate nurtures the grass, and
it is no April Fool’s joke when we say
that here, you can usually get out
on a perfect green from April 1st.
Alssund Golf Course is centrally
located near Augustenborg. The
gently rolling terrain, with old
hedges and meadows gives a
changing series of approaches to
the holes. From the course, you
have a wonderful view across the
landscape at Mjang Dam.
Nordborg Golf Course is speckled
with the region’s native trees and
bushes. This beautiful area has a difference
throughout the terrain of 20
meters. From the highest point, you
can enjoy a beautiful view over the
Little Belt to Funen. The course presents
challenges for both elite and
bogey players, especially when the
wind blows over the highest slopes.
Benniksgaard Golf Center with
its rolling landscape, many small

lakes and a wonderful view over
Flensborg Fjord is one of Denmark’s
most beautiful golf courses. After a
relaxing game, you can enjoy a cup
of coffee and a delicious bagel in
the coffee bar 'Kaffariet'.

Along our coastline, you will find
a varying ocean floor, where many
stones provide hiding places for
the beautiful sea trout. In the deep
waters of lakes, large pike wait in
the protection of plants and reeds. If
you need angling equipment or the
right wobblers, see pages 28 and 63.

must have a current fishing license
to angle from the coast or on the
sea. Licenses can be purchased at

At Dybbøl Banke Battlefield Centre
during the summer, you can learn
what a soldier’s life was like during the
war of 1864. Take part in moving the
heavy wooden bridge over the trench

and shoot a canon. You can make your
own ammunition and try on a soldier’s
uniform.
Winter on Dybbøl opens Dybbøl
Banke Battlefield Centre outside its
normal season. Fighting on Dybbøl
Banke continued despite bad weather,
and hearing about the hard lives of the
soldiers takes on new meaning on a
bitter cold Saturday.
Every child is born with an artist
inside. This is the focus oft he Children’s
Art Festival. A professional artist guides
children during a free workshop, which
is followed by an exhibition during the

Find inspiration for creative activities
in classes at the Paper Museum
Town in Gråsten and Stolbroladen in
Svenstrup. As the activities take place

(the North Forest) is in the southern
part of the forest. If you drive
into the forest from the south, turn
right at Skovkroen inn and follow
Havvejen down to the water and

The Region's Capital
Sønderborg is the region’s main
city, with a large number of shops
and restaurants. The city grew under
the protection of the castle “Søndre
Borg” (south fort), now Sønderborg
Castle.
The castle, built in the 1160s as a
defence against the Wends, lies
at the south end of Als Sound.
The Danish King Christian II was
imprisoned here for 17 years.
Legend says that he paced restlessly
around a table, making a ridge in its
top with his thumb. visit the castle
museum to learn the truth.
Take lots of time on your visit, as
the castle is a museum which, apart
from special exhibitions, houses the
entire history of Southern Jutland
from the Middle Ages to the present.
The royal chapel in the north wing
of Sønderborg Castle was commissioned
(1568-70) by Dowager Queen
Dorothea.
This unique, beautiful chapel
is Denmark’s oldest Protestant
ducal sanctuary and the oldest
Renaissance church in Northern
Europe.

Dybbøl Banke by Dybbøl Mill was
the scene of some of the most dramatic
events in Denmark’s history.
On this battlefield, the Danes were
defeated by the Prussian army in
1864, after which Southern Jutland
came under German rule until 1920.

Dybbøl Banke Battlefield Centre
illustrates battle conditions during
the 1864 war, and we suggest a visit
to the Centre before you wander
around the nearby entrenchments.
The Centre has a soldiers’ encampment
where you can make bullets
and coins, and see what life was like
during the war.
Outside, you can explore the
entrenchment remains, and enjoy
the beautiful surroundings and
views over the water to Sønderborg
and Broagerland.
Deutsches Museum Nordschleswig
in Sønderborg illustrates the life of
the German minority population
from the 19th century to the present.

There are several possibilities for
walks around Sønderborg. Fodslaw
Hikers have developed a 10 km
route leading through both the old
and new parts of the city. The route
can be extended by 4 km, past
Dybbøl Banke. Start at OK Petrol
station at Dybbølgade 43 where, for
a fee, you can buy a detailed route
description. At the tourist bureau,
Sønderborg Castle
you can find folders illustrating walks
around the city.
Guided walks in Sønderborg are
offered during July in Danish and
German. Ask for information at the
tourist bureau or see more on

Royal Summer Residence
Gråsten lies near Nybøl Nor,
ringed by beautiful forests.
Gråsten Castle's park and church
are main attractions. A fairytale
atmosphere awaits you at one of
the royal family's summer residences,
with beautiful gardens filled
with rhododendrons and roses,
planned by the late Queen Ingrid.
Enjoy a guided tour around the
garden - see page 54. Order group
tours at Sønderborg Tourist Bureau.
A sense of devotion is felt upon
entering the church, the only part of
the castle to survive a massive fire in
1757. It appears almost as it did when
consecrated in 1699. Twelve marbelized
Corinthian pillars bear galleries
on each side of the nave, decorated
with religious paintings above and
below. Paintings also adorn the beautiful
stucco ceiling and walls.
A guidebook (in Danish) can
be purchased at Gråsten Tourist
Bureau. The church is open for
Sunday services, also Wednesday,
Saturday and Sunday during the
summer from 2-4 pm unless the
royal family is in residence.
parades and changing the guard
always occur when royalty is at the
castle. Every morning at 11.30, the
parade begins at "Det gule Palæ" (the
Yellow Palace) and goes through town
to the castle yard where the changing
of the guard takes place. On Fridays, a
short concert follows in the courtyard.
A ride in a horse-drawn wagon to the
Gråsten Forests is a wonderful way
to experience nature. See the beautiful
lakes named after Queen Ingrid
and her three daughters, as well as
Denmark's largest carp ponds. Read

The paper Museum Town is found
in Alnor, a treasure trove for those
with creative interests. You can be
inspired to work with paper and can
experiment with cutouts, origami,
greeting cards, etc. See page 60.
Rinkenæs Old Church is one of
the oldest churches in Denmark, a
Romanesque building from 1158. It
originally stood in the middle of a
village which disappeared around
the year 1300. Now, the church
stands by itself approx. 4 km from
Rinkenæs.
Kværs Heath is an old wandering
sand dune, halted by organized
planting. The area is rich in heather
and evergreens, interesting flora,
birds of prey, squirrels, foxes and
frogs. Approach the heath from the
gravel road leading from the main
road between Kværs and Søgård.
The small church in Kværs has no
steeple. The Romanesque choir and
Gråsten - beautiful throughout the year
nave were later extended with a
porch and burial vault and, finally,
a free-standing bell tower in 1815.
The churchyard is one of the few in
Denmark maintaining the tradition
of burying parishioners on the side
of the church facing toward their
homes.

The northern part of Als displays
definite signs of Ice Age glaciers
which shaped the earth into hills and
valleys.
Nordborg Castle is situated in beautiful
surroundings by Nordborg Lake.
The original castle was built around
1150 by King Svend as protection
against the Wends from Rügen, and
is thought to be the first fortress on
Als. It was known as Alsborg until the
construction of Sønderborg Castle.
Following a fire in 1665, the castle
was rebuilt on the old battlements
and was completed in 1678. It is now
Hills and Dales
a boarding school, but visitors are
welcome in the surrounding park.
Nordborg Church dates from the
1200s, but has undergone several
renovations and extensions. It was
originally called Tontoft Church,
after the small village surrounding
it. On the wall of the north chapel
hangs an altarpiece from the former
chapel at Nordborg Castle. Behind
the altar is a door to the crypt where
Nordborg's ducal family were buried
from 1700. The coffins can be seen
through a grill. The church is open
Monday to Friday 8 am - 4 pm.

The experience park Danfoss
Universe is located by the highway
south of Havnbjerg.
The park is open year round and is
always worth a visit, whether you
want to try out the more than 200
activities, experience the Segway
Track, visit Explorama where you
can test your intelligence, see the
exciting physics shows or enjoy the
beautiful gardens. In Bitland, you

can explore the digital world in a
relaxed, relevant and hands-on way.

Egen Church near Guderup is the
largest village church on Als. See
Denmark's most beautiful and best
preserved church stables here. The
34 stalls with room for 68 horses
are 150-200 years old. At the tourist
bureaus, you can purchase a brochure
describing all the churches in
our region.
Northern Europe's highest sundial
is found south of Egen Church on
the opposite side of the highway. It
is 12 metres high and stands on a
platform 28 metres in diameter. The
sundial is extremely accurate,
showing the time +/- 1 minute, as
opposed to the normal 30 minutes.
Østerholm Castle ruin is found
on Strelbjergvej in the little village

Augustenborg has many old houses
originally built for the castle’s servants.
Be sure to examine the beautifully
carved doors.
Augustenborg Castle is one of
Denmark’s most beautiful and historic
castles. Sit in the lovely park under
Hans Christian Andersen’s favourite
linden tree and enjoy the view over
the water. It may have been here that
he first thought of writing his fairytale
”The Little Match Girl”.
For more than 75 years, most of
the castle has functioned as a psy-

chiatric hospital. The small Psychiatric
Museum in the old porter’s lodge
illustrates progress in the treatment
of psychiatric patients. In the Mini-
Museum by the bell tower, you can
learn about the history of the ducal
families who lived at the castle. See
opening hours on page 95.
During July, you can join tours of
the church, the garden room and
the Duke’s study. Groups can book
tours at Sønderborg Tourist Bureau.
Augustenborg Castle Church is an
unusual example of a ducal chapel,
with a wide, chequered marble floor
and almost overwhelming stucco
decorations and flowered, gilded
woodcarvings. It was consecrated
in 1775, and especially designed to
accommodate the huge crinolines
worn by noble lades of that period.
The beautiful Carrara marble christening
font was a gift from Tsar
Alexander. Notice the unusual placement
of the altar, pulpit and organ,
one above the other. The church is
open Monday to Friday 8 am – 3 pm.
One of Denmark’s largest
sculpture parks can be found in

Augustenborg. Experience the
interaction of beautiful sculptures
with lovely trees and bushes in the
north part of the castle park, which
is always open to visitors. Read more
about the new Augustiana Sculpture
park and Art Centre on page 56.
Ketting Nor lies by the small road
between Sebbelev and Egen. Duke
Hans the Younger commanded
the building of the dam out to the
fjord in an effort to obtain more
arable land. It was not possible to
sufficiently dry out the earth, but
he created a very beautiful natural
area. The Nor has a rich bird life, and
you can follow the little path on the
south side out to a bird reserve with
a sighting tower. Remember your
rubber boots!
Ketting Church can be dated to
about 1200-1250. The church has a
characteristic fort tower. The altarpiece
dates from 1743 with a slightly
later crucifiction painting. A painting
on the south wall is likely the
original alterpiece painting. The oak
christening font is from 1772 and
the Neo-gothic crucifix in the choir
arch is dated 1300.

Some of the region’s best beaches
are found at Kegnæs and by Drejet.
When you drive towards Kegnæs,
there is a sign with "Badestrand"
(beach) to the left - just before the
campsite by Drejet. Follow the gravel
road down to Kærneland beach.
Discover the rich bird life on South
Als and experience the area's beautiful
natural surroundings.
On a quiet day, enjoy the beautiful
view from Mintebjerg over the fields
and Hørup Hav and see the Kegnæs
peninsula reflected in the still water.
The best Beaches
The bird sanctuary ”Trillen” is a
beautiful area near Høruphav. Park
by the forest and follow the shoreline
to the trees where you can
watch the birds from the viewing
tower. Continue along the shore
and through the forest back to the
car park.
Vibæk Watermill is the last watermill
on the island Als. It is situated
in idyllic surroundings on the road
between Høruphav and Skovby.

the mill during the summer - see
more on page 56.
Kegnæs Lighthouse dominates
the skyline by the dam leading
to the Kegnæs peninsula and is
open during the summer. Climb
to the top and enjoy the view to
Broager, Germany and the islands
Ærø and Langeland. From the lighthouse,
you can follow the Kegnæs
Path along the west coast, with a
view to Broagerland and Kegnæs
Ende, where you can see across to
Høruphav.
Kegnæs church dates from 1615.
According to popular belief, Duke
Hans the Younger of Sønderborg

commissioned its construction in
penance for having wrongfully executed
7 peasants suspected of stealing
meat from his kitchen.
During a thaw, the meat was discovered
in the castle moat. It had rotted
and had been discarded by the
Duke's cook, who was too afraid of
his master to own up to what he had
done.
You can wander along the Als Path
from Drejet along the east coast, via
Mommark, Fynshav and Nordborg
to Hardeshøj on the west coast.
Along the way, you will find several
forests, including Nørreskoven and
Blommeskobbel.
Northern Europe's largest collection
of stone dolmens is found
in the small forest Blommeskobbel
on the east coast of Als, a wonderful
place for a walk with a special destination.
Park at the edge of the forest, walk
down the path about 500 metres
and you will find a long barrow to
your right, as well as the dolmens.
Notice the large cover stone on
Sandy beach on South Als
the first long dolmen – it weighs
approx. 20 tons. How was it placed
there?

Broager lies on a peninsula -
edged by the Gendarm Path and
with a beautiful view over Flensborg
Fjord.
The majestic twin spires of Broager
Church, formerly used as a navigation
marker, dominate the town's
skyline.
The white-chalked church was built
of monks' bricks in the 1200s with a
Romanesque apse, choir and nave,
and extended in the 1400s with a
Late Gothic vestry, cross-vaulted
cruciform chapels, and twin spires.
Fertile Landscapes
It is one of Denmark's oldest and largest
village churches and is known
for its rich fresco decoration and the
country's largest bellframe.
The view from Smøl vold is fantastic.
The embankment lies 46 meters
above sea level and from here, you
can see Nybøl Nor, parts of Flensborg
Fjord and Broager Church.
Learn about the history of tile and
brick-making at Cathrinesminde
Brickworks Museum. The fully restored
factory dates from 1732 and
produced until 1969. The museum
is located on a beautiful site directly
on Flensborg Fjord.
Follow the Brickworks path along
the water and see the remains of no
less than eight brick factories.
The walk is approx. 3 km. The
parking area by Cathrinesminde
Brickworks Museum is a good starting
point for your walk.
Skelde Burial Mound comprises 3
graves. The oldest part is from the
Peasant Stone Age approx. 3500 B.C.
It was later reused and extended

approx. 1400 and 1200 B.C., leaving
some excellent stone pitchings.
Egernsund Church dates from
1907-09. The local brickworks owners
donated money, materials and workmen
for its construction. The building
had chapel status until 1959,
when King Frederik IX permitted the
town of Egernsund to have its own
church.
Sundeved is more than tales of
war and national symbolism. It is
fertile countryside, a varied coast,
hedgerows and green forests.
Sandbjerg Manor is one of
Southern Jutland's most beautiful
stately homes. Built in 1788, it was
used as a Prussian headquarters and
field hospital during the war of 1864.
At 2 am on 29th June 1864, the bell
in the manor's clocktower signalled
the departure of troops crossing the
Sound to capture Als. The building
is now owned by Aarhus University
and used as a seminar centre.
The Nydam path's route leads along
the water past Sandbjerg Manor
and Nydam Bog. A walk on this 7 km
patch is highly recommended.

Park at Sottrup Skov (forest) or
Nydam Bog.
Weapons found in Nydam Bog
bear witness to ancient battles.
When cutting peat, workers uncovered
ancient planks, and excavation
in 1863 revealed many arrow- and
spearheads, as well as two ships
from approx. 310 AD. One ship
was lost during the war of 1864.
The other, the Nydam Boat, is
displayed across the border at
Gottorp Castle in Schleswig. Today,
the bog appears as it was before
excavation.

a break at the Marina Fiskenæs
Wellness Centre in Gråsten.
Attractive holiday cottage areas
are spread along our coasts. You
can find both small, cosy houses
for 4-6 persons and large, luxurious
ones for 8-24 persons. Main
cottage areas on the Jutland side
are around vemmingbund and
Rendbjerg. On Als, the largest areas
Sweet Dreams
are found in Skovmose, Mommark
and on Kegnæs on South Als, also
Købingsmark on North Als. Smaller
areas are near Nr. Kettingskov,
Lambjerg and Lavensby.
If you prefer a camping holiday,
there are many possibilities. We
have nearly 20 campsites in our
region, and you can choose from
1- to 4-star classifications.
Many of our campsites have both
caravans and cabins for hire. Most
have good facilities for children with
well-equipped playgrounds.
If you are holidaying in a mobile
home, you MUST check in to a
campsite. Camping in open natural
surroundings or on parking areas is
not allowed in Denmark.
You can also rough it if you wish.
We have many so-called "primitive"
tenting places and shelters in our
area.
The National Forestry Commission
has chosen the forests at Blommeskobbel
on Als and Bøffelkobbel near
Dybbøl as test spots for "tenting for
quiet forest hikers".

‘shop till you drop’ in our region. We have a wide range
of shops, from specialist boutiques to larger shopping
centres.
Shops are normally open 9.30 am - 5.30 pm on weekdays,
as well as Saturday morning. In larger cities, the shops
are open to 1 pm on Saturdays and in Sønderborg, the

shops are open to 3 pm on the first
Saturday of the month. Many supermarkets
are also open on Sundays.

South Jutland Symphony Orchestra is a fulltime
professional symphony orchestra based
in Sønderborg.
The orchestra plays approx. 150 concerts a

Augustiana is a destination for the whole family. You can

This restored mill farm from the 1750s, with
watermill, pond and windmill, is idyllically
situated by vibæk, the holy brook on South
Als. On activity days, daily life and use of
implements from the old days is demonstrated.
There are activities for children, and changing
exhibitions in the watermill.
Groups received year round by appointment.
All children are welcome on 6th, 7th and 8th
April, when there are workshops at the library
in Sønderborg.
The grand finale is the opening of an
exhibition of your artwork in the beautiful
Knights‘Hall at Sønderborg Castle on Good
Friday, 10th April.

German internment camp for members of
the Danish Resistance. A total of some

camp during its nine months of existence.
