Gdańsk Metropolitan Area – A Gem of the North
The exceptional attractiveness of the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area, though stemming from
its convenient location at an intersection of important transport routes, is however the
ultimate function of many other features, e.g. the well educated local labour market, the
robust centres of academic life, science and research, the long list of tourist and cultural
attractions, the unique natural environment, and the excellently organised business infrastructure.
These factors pertain not only to continuity in the economic development
of the metropolis, but most of all to the growing number of new investments.
The Gdańsk Metropolitan Area comprises cities, towns, and communes of eight poviats,
including three poviat cities forming the heart of the metropolis: Gdańsk, Gdynia,
and Sopot. The degree of integration is highest between the cities and communes
working hand in hand as members of the Metropolitan Council of the Bay of Gdańsk

and the Metropolitan Transport Union of the Bay of Gdańsk. The two institutions are in
charge of integration of the transport, investments in the utilities, and many other projects
which, once completed, will substantially improve the local living standards and
add to the advantages of the area from the point of view of the visitors and investors.
Cooperation between the cities and communes of the Gdańsk Metropolitan Area pertains
to their swift social and economic development and enhances the quality of the residents’
living conditions. The effects are largely due to the skilful economic policy which,
alongside the industries traditional for the region, is geared towards the development
of modern branches of economy and tourism, focusing particularly on implementation
of the sustained development principle.
