AREA AND POPULATION
The Bay of Gdańsk Metropolitan Area, with the population of over 1.24 million, occupies
the area of 4858 square kilometres. 60% of the inhabitants live in the kernel cities, where
Gdańsk accounts for almost 37% of the number, Gdynia for 20%, and Sopot for slightly
more than 3%. The average population density for the whole Metropolitan Area is 804
people per square kilometre.
The Gdańsk Metropolitan Area is the quickest developing sub-region of Northern
Poland and a well-established centre of integration processes in the Baltic Sea region.
The Gdańsk Metropolitan Area too, is a major link in the chain of the transport routes
connecting Northern and Western Europe to the central and southern parts of the continent.
It is also a gate to the world for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe forming
the natural hinterland for the two seaports of Gdańsk and Gdynia.
