AREA AND POPULATION<br />

The Bay of Gdańsk Metropolitan Area, with the population of over 1.24 million, occupies<br />

the area of 4858 square kilometres. 60% of the <strong>in</strong>habitants live <strong>in</strong> the kernel cities, where<br />

Gdańsk accounts for almost 37% of the number, Gdynia for 20%, <strong>and</strong> Sopot for slightly<br />

more than 3%. The average population density for the whole Metropolitan Area is 804<br />

people per square kilometre.<br />

The Gdańsk Metropolitan Area is the quickest develop<strong>in</strong>g sub-region of Northern<br />

Pol<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> a well-established centre of <strong>in</strong>tegration processes <strong>in</strong> the Baltic Sea region.<br />

The Gdańsk Metropolitan Area too, is a major l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> the cha<strong>in</strong> of the transport routes<br />

connect<strong>in</strong>g Northern <strong>and</strong> Western Europe to the central <strong>and</strong> southern parts of the cont<strong>in</strong>ent.<br />

It is also a gate to the world for the countries of Central <strong>and</strong> Eastern Europe form<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the natural h<strong>in</strong>terl<strong>and</strong> for the two seaports of Gdańsk <strong>and</strong> Gdynia.<br />
